Walter Edmunds

RIDGEWAY — Walter James Edmunds was born in Ridgeway, South Carolina on June 24, 1916 to Alonzo and Allie Moore Edmunds.

Walter served in the armed service during World War II. He joined the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church at an early age and served on the Trustee Board and was the church treasurer. For 56 years he has been a Mason in the Purity Lodge #42 of Ridgeway, South Carolina.

Precious memories remain with those who loved Walter and the many, many lives he touched. He leaves a loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Aileen Adams Edmunds of the home; sons, Thomas Edmunds (Margarite), Ridgeway, SC, James Adams, Amarillo, TX, Oscar Edmunds (Geneva), Columbia, SC, Douglas Edmunds (Pondorieus), Columbia, SC, Sidney Edmunds, Camden, SC, and Stanley Edmunds, Greenville, SC: adopted son, Sylvester Tucker (Ozelia), Ridgeway, SC; daughters, Kathleen Edmunds, Greenwich, CT, Shirley Edmunds, Ridgeway, SC; 16 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Lollage DeHart

NEWBERRY — Services for Lollage W. DeHart will be at 3 PM Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6:30 - 8:30 PM at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church Building Fund, 2496 S.C. Highway 773, Pomaria, 29126.

Mrs. DeHart, 84, widow William DeHart, died January 8, 2005. Born in Pomaria, Mrs. DeHart was a daughter of the late George and Alberta Wicker Wicker. She was a homemaker and a life long member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Ladies Bible Class.

She is survived by daughters; Nancy (Carroll) Clem and Carolyn (Melvin) Mooney, both of Greenwood; grandchildren, Pace Clem of Rock Hill, Valerie Bassett and her husband Kevin of Summerville, and Stuart Hawkins and his wife Angie of Greenville; and a great-granddaughter, Marley Ann Bassett.

Effie Whetstone

COPE — A graveside service for Effie H. Whetstone, 91, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Memorial Park Cemetery, Orangeburg. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Thompson Funeral Home, Orangeburg. She died January 9, 2005.

Alberta Kenndly

COLUMBIA — Services for Alberta L. Kenndly will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Baptist Church with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel is in charge. Surviving are her sister, Lillie Thompson; sisters-in-law, Doretha Wilson, Martha Montgomery.

James Powell

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for James Floyd Powell, 53, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. Pat Orr and the Rev. Doug Mathis will officiate with burial in Williams Hill Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Hemingway, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Monday, January 10, 2005 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Powell died Saturday, January 8, 2005. Born in Georgetown Co., SC, he was a son of the late William Bemon and Kathleen Williams Powell. He was owner and operator of Cinema Wholesale. He was a loving and hard worker and loved to fish.

Surviving are his wife, Deborah Tolson Powell of Hartsville, SC; son, Chris Powell of Mt. Vernon, OH; daughter, LeGay Powell of Florence, SC; brother and sister-in-law, William and Dorothy Powell of Hemingway, SC; stepson, Billy Cross of Society Hill, SC; stepdaughter, Edie Cross of Poplar Bluff, MO. He was preceded in death by his sister Janette Scurry, and his brother Larry Powell.

Chris Seeling

WEST COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Christopher “Chris” Glenn Seeling, 28, of West Columbia, will be held 11 o’clock, Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at First Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. Neal Mathias. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 until 8 at Shives Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 1420 Lady St., Columbia, SC 29201. Graveside service will be held Friday, January 14, 2005, at 11 o’clock in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne, Indiana, directed by D. O. McComb & Sons Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Avenue, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46805.

Mr. Seeling died Thursday, January 6, 2005. Born in Fort Wayne Indiana, he was the son of Stephen M. Seeling and Rebecca Jane Fortmeyer. He had been a resident of the Columbia area since 1996 and was a conductor/engineer for Norfolk Southern Railroad. Mr. Seeling was a graduate of B. S. N. F. Railroad Academy at Johnson County Community College. He was the Secretary/Treasurer of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers & Trainmen and a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his father and step-mother, Patty, of Lenexa Kansas; mother and step-father, Ed Schmidt of Morehead City, NC; sisters, Carolyn (Joshua) Tomlinson of Elkhart, IN; Rebecca (Brad) Kapsner of Melrose, MN, Naomi (Troy) Knafla of Sauk Rapids, MN, Theresa Schmidt of Morehead City, NC; brothers, Joseph (Shawana) Schmidt of Milaca, MN, Edward “Eddie” Schmidt of Morehead City, NC; grandfathers, Wayne F. Fortmeyer and Donald J. Malson; uncle, Steven (Helga) Fortmeyer; aunts, Carol Meithke, Linda Gaye (Dave) Finlayson; nephews, Mason, Taylor, and Daniel; nieces, Amber, Abigail, and Genevieve; cousins, Scott, Fred, Heather, and Lisa; his extended family, Joe & Kaye Teague of Columbia; and his beloved Black Labrador, Beauregard.

Ralph Smart

COTTAGEVILLE — Services for Ralph Smart, 73, U.S. Army veteran, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Round O, where he was a member, with burial in Burr Hill Cemetery. Hamilton’s Funeral Home, Walterboro, is in charge. Born in Colleton Co. to Archie and Victoria Smart, he died Jan. 5, 2005. Surviving are wife, Louise G. Smart; six daughters; four sons; one brother; one sister.

Alexander Gilchrist

COLUMBIA — Alexander MacGregor (Sandy) Gilchrist of Columbia, SC, formerly of Charleston, died Saturday, January 8 in a hospital after a long illness in Charleston, SC. He was born in Charleston August 7, 1931 son of the late Jane Ball Foster Gilchrist and Gilbert Alexander Gilchrist. He was educated in the public schools in Charleston, received his undergraduate degree in classical studies from the University of South Carolina and his masters degree in Library Science from the University of Kentucky. He taught Latin at Lexington School in Lexington Kentucky, was a member of the faculty of the University of Kentucky as a librarian. In 1981 he accepted a position with the University of South Carolina Library and remained there until his death.

He is survived by his granddaughter Elizabeth Ann Holt, seven nieces and nephews, John E. Gilchrist, Jr., Kathryn Gilchrist Stonaker, Barbara Gilchrist Schlenker all of Charleston, Gilbert F. Gilchrist, Jr., Nashville, TN, Rudolph A. Gilchrist of Fairview, TN., Eleanor Gilchrist of Sewanee, TN., Mary Rose G. Greenhill of Charleston, a sister-in-law Barbara B. Gilchrist of Charleston and 14 great nieces and nephews.

He was a member of Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Columbia, SC. Friends and family are invited to attend his funeral on Tuesday, January 11 at 11:30 AM at St. Andrew’s Parish Episcopal Church, 2604 Ashley River Road, Charleston. Officiating will be Fr. James Fraser Lyon IV, Rector of Church of the Good Shepherd, Columbia; Fr. Ralph C. Robinson, Parochial Vicar, St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Columbia, and Fr. George J. Tompkins, III Rector, St. Andrew's Church. Interment will follow in the family plot at Strawberry Chapel, Berkeley County. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the funeral service in the church guild room.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: Church of the Good Shepherd, 1512 Blanding Street, Columbia, SC 29201. Strawberry Chapel ,729 Creekside Drive, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464, or the Preservation Fund at St. Andrew's Parish Church, 2604 Ashley River Road, Charleston, SC 29414.

LANCASTER — Services for Charlie Butler Broughton, 87, widower of Edith Broughton, are 2 p.m. Tuesday (visitation 6-8 tonight) at Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw Chapel; burial: Kershaw City Cemetery with military honors. Born in Kershaw to Charlie and Gussie Broughton, he died Jan. 8, 2005. Surviving: children, Jerry, Margaret Broughton; one sister; grands; great-grands; great-great-grandchild.

Magaline Barrineau

GEORGETOWN — Services for Magaline M. Barrineau, 86, widow of Luther Barrineau Sr., are 11 a.m. Tuesday (visitation 6-8 tonight) at Graham Funeral Home with burial in Elmwood Cemetery Annex. Born in Greeleyville to Sylvester and Nancy Braxton Mitchum, she died Jan. 8, 2005. Surviving are companion, Frank Heyward; two sons; six daughters; two sisters; 19 grands; 36 great-grands; one great-great-grandchild.

Jo Dargan

DARLINGTON — Services for Jo Ann Davis Dargan, 46, are noon Tuesday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Timmonsville; burial in Florence National Cemetery. Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Darlington Co. to Frank and Josephine Davis, she died Jan. 6, 2005. Surviving: parents; husband, Calvin Darlington; sons, Bernardo, Anthony Dargan; sisters, Judy Baskett, Mae Sims; one grandson; others.

Myra Keith

TRAVELERS REST — Services for Myra Marie Dill Keith, 49, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday (visitation 7-9 tonight) at The Howze Mortuary with burial in Mt. Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Born in Greenville Co. to Theron Dill and Dorothy Redd, she died Jan. 8, 2005. Surviving are mother; husband, Dale Keith; daughters, Catina Keith, Victoria Dill; son, Dale Dill; brothers, Steven, Mike, Keith, Tim Dill; five grandchildren.

Green Jackson

WATERTOWN, N.Y. — Services with burial for Green Morris Jackson, 40, will be held at 2 p.m. (viewing 1 p.m.) Tuesday at Hall Hill Baptist Church, Swansea, S.C. Visitation 6-8 tonight at J.H. Robinson Funeral Home, Wagener, S.C. Born in Stamford, Conn. to John and Lena Jackson, he died Jan. 4, 2005. Gladys Smith

BATESBURG — Gladys Smith, 87, of Batesburg, died Sunday, January 9, 2005. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at Bethlehem Baptist Church with interment in Gunter Cemetery with Rev. Richard Ryals and Rev. Johnny Muller officiating.

Pallbearers will be grandsons: John, Stuart, David, Tracy and Marc Smith, Greg Rikard, Wayne and Dana Fulmer. Honorary pallbearers will be Earl Stone Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Smith was born in Monetta to the late V. Horace and Effie Hartley Rankins. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, WMU, Homemaker Club and the Senior Club. She was married to the late Barney Brooklyn Smith. She had a love for flowers and gardening.

Surviving is her sons and daughters-in-law, Ervin “Smitty” and Melva Smith of Pelion; Buford and Pauline Smith; Linwood and Shirley Smith, all of Batesburg; Randall and Rita Smith of Irmo; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Vearl Rikard of Leesville; Maggie and Charles Fulmer of Gilbert; brothers, Curtis and W.H. Rankins, both of Monetta; sister, Juanita Jones of Monetta; 18 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren.

Family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, January 10, 2005, at Milton Shealy Funeral Home, other times at the home of her son, Linwood Smith, 326 Denmark Court, Batesburg.
