Frank Pope

AIKEN — Services with burial for Frank Pope will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday (viewing 1 p.m.) at Union Baptist Church. R.O. Levy Home for Funerals, Batesburg-Leesville, is in charge. Born in Aiken to Walter and Annie Mae Pope, he died January 5, 2005. Surviving are his wife, Trenice Pope; son, Corey; siblings, Willie Pope, Edna Johnson, Frances Johnson; granddaughter, Taquana Pope.

Katherine Nichols

CHESTER — Services with burial for Katherine Elanor Grant Nichols, 81, widow of William Nichols, are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Uriel Presbyterian Church. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Barron Funeral Home. Born in Chester to Amos and Alice Roberts Grant, she died Jan. 9, 2005. Surviving: daughters, Martha Miller, Katherine Wilson; 5 grandchildren; 4 great-grands; siblings, Thomas, Bobby Grant, Margaret Yarbrough.

Jerry Johnson

UNION — Mr. Jerry Servern Johnson, age 68, of 109 State St., High Shoals, N.C., formerly of Lockhart, died at his residence Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005.

Mr. Johnson was born in Lockhart on Jan. 5, 1937, a son of the late Julius Marion Johnson and Mable Harris Johnson. He was a Baptist. Mr. Johnson attended Lockhart High School, had retired from the U.S. Navy and was a lifetime member at large of the Fleet Reserve Association.

Surviving are a daughter: Monica Sue J. Crowe of Cumberland, RI; a son: Jerry Steven Johnson of Oakley, California; two sisters: June J. Parrott of Midland, N.C., and Carol J. Shockley of Chester; a brother: James M. Johnson of Myrtle Beach; five grandchildren: Jessica Crowe, John Paul Silva, Christopher Shallies, Jessica Nicole Johnson and Jerry S. Johnson, Jr.; and 6 great-grandchildren. Mr. Johnson was predeceased by a sister: Helen J. Helms.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Lockhart First Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Ben Hill, Rev. Calvin Smith and Rev. Robert E. Harris. Burial will be in the Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors.

Active pallbearers will be John Paul Silva, Jerry S. Johnson, Jr., Jerry Greenwood, Scott Parrott, and Joe Shockley.

The body will be placed in church at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday where the family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:45 p.m.

The family is at the home of his sister, Carol Shockley, 620 McDowell Drive, Chester, S.C.

Memorials may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering of Lockhart First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 190, Lockhart, SC 29364.

Lt. Col. Hazel Honeycutt

COLUMBIA — A Celebration of Life Service for Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Hazel Virginia Honeycutt, 89, of Columbia, will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 12, 2005, in the Chapel of Greenlawn Funeral Home, with the U.S. Army Chaplain officiating. Interment, with full military honors, will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be the U.S. Army. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.

Lt. Col. Honeycutt died January 8, 2005, after an extended illness. Born on July 31, 1915, in Belmont, NC, she was the daughter of the late William Alfred and Lillie Bost Honeycutt. After graduating from Belmont High School, she completed nurses training at James Walker Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, NC. Her Army Nurses Corps career began in July 1944 at Ft. Rucker, AL, where she retired 26 years later in August 1970. She served in numerous positions including Head Nurse of Intensive Care, Supervisor of Surgical Nursing, Medical Supervisor, and Chief of Nursing Services. Her assignments were worldwide, including France during WWII, Germany during reconstruction, Vietnam at the 36th Evacuation Hospital, and numerous stateside military posts. Her awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star, and the Legion of Merit. Lt. Col. Honeycutt was the consummate professional, always putting the needs of her patients first. She loved to travel, and she met and befriended many special people. She was dedicated to her country, her family, and her friends and neighbors; and in turn, she was loved and respected by all. She was a lifetime member of the Belmont First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Lottie Tish of Tallahassee, FL, and Mrs. Lorene Ballad of Belmont, NC; a brother, William A. Honeycutt, Jr. “Bill” of Kansas City, MO; several nieces and nephews, and dear friends, Cora and Johnny Ashford, and Mary Waters. She was predeceased by her long time friend and companion, Lt. Col. Robert L. Hughes of Columbia; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Hanks of Belmont, NC, and Mrs. Marjorie Crawford of Franklin, NC; and her dog, Pepe.

Sally King

CHERAW — Services for Sally King, 72, were held January 10, 2005, at Pee Dee Union Baptist Church with burial in Foundry Hill Cemetery. Reid’s Funeral Home was in charge. Mrs. King died January 5, 2005, in Chesterfield General Hospital.

Travis Jackson

WINNSBORO — Services for Travis Jackson, 24, are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Morris Creek Baptist Church, with burial in St. John Baptist Church Cemetery. Viewing is 1-9 p.m. today at Glover’s Memorial Chapel. Travis died January 8, 2005. Surviving: mother, Carol Jackson; father, Dan Jackson Sr.; brother, Dan Jackson Jr.; special friend, Teca Foster; other relatives and friends.

Joseph Davis

WINNSBORO — Services for Joseph Nathan Brown Davis, 27, are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Morris Creek Baptist Church with burial in St. John Baptist Church Cemetery. Viewing is 1-9 p.m. today at Glover’s Memorial Chapel. Joseph died Jan. 8, 2005. Surviving: mother, Annperetta Davis; father, Joe Brown Sr.; siblings, Joe Brow Jr., Darrell Hudson, Beautishia, Latishia Robertson, Pamia Brown; other relatives.

Harvey Hefner

ROCK HILL — A memorial service for Harvey Gerald Hefner, 59, 3 p.m. today: Heath Memorial Methodist Church; burial in Lando Cemetery, Greene Funeral Home, Northwest is in charge. Born in Chester to James and Ruth Hefner, he died Jan. 8, 2005. Surviving: wife, Rhonda Hefner; children, Jerry, Matthew Hefner, Alex Feemster, Paula Hinnant, Rondela, Debra Threatt, Leanne Smith, 2 siblings; 11 grandchildren.

Barbara Simpson

SUMTER — A graveside service for Barbara Angle Simpson, 71, widow of Allen Simpson, will be 3 p.m. Thursday in Pinewood Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Bullock Funeral Home. Born in San Branch, W. Va., to James Angle and Mary Niceley, she died Jan. 9, 2005. Surviving: children, Marshall Leach, Patricia Elliott; sisters, Jackie DuBois, Margie Cochran, Kay Angle, five grandchildren.

Charles Stone

EDGEFIELD — Mr. Charles Henry Stone, 79, of Martintown Road, died Sunday, January 9, 2005, in Edgefield County Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Republican Baptist Church with burial in Peace Haven Cemetery.

Mr. Stone had retired from B.E. & K. Construction Co. and was the owner of Charlie Stone’s Country Hams. He was a former State House Representative of South Carolina for two terms. He was an Army veteran of WW II and The Korean War. He was a Mason and a member of the American Legion and a member of Republican Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Edith Hammond Stone; 1 son, Tommy Stone, Johnston; 1 daughter, Deborah S. Prater, Edgefield; 5 grandchildren, Sarah and Elizabeth Stone and Victoria, Nicole, and Nicholas Prater.

The family is at the home of his daughter on Martintown Road and will receive friends Tuesday, January 11, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home.

Willie Williamson

BLAIR — Services with burial for Willie Mack Williamson, 74, will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hassion Hill Baptist Church. Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home, Winnsboro, is in charge. Born in Fairfield County to Frank and Cloddie Crosby Williamson, he died January 7, 2005. Surviving: sons, Willie Jr., Freddie, Michael, Anthony Williamson; daughter, Christine McConnell; brother, MC Williamson.

Richard Turner Jr.

SUMTER — A graveside service for Richard C. Turner Jr., 81, widower of Mildred Turner, 2 p.m. Wednesday in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery; visitation 6-8 tonight at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home. Born in Sellars to Richard Sr. and Lillie S. Turner, he died Jan. 10, 2005. Surviving are children, Jerry Turner, Debbie Smith; brother, Carl Turner; grandchildren, Ricky, Brian Turner, Chad, Jennifer Smith.

Tacoma Youngblood

AIKEN — Services for Tacoma Lamar Youngblood, 31, will be held at 3 p.m. today at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home with burial in Aiken Memorial Gardens. Born in Aiken, he died Jan. 9, 2005. Surviving: parents, Sidney Schifferli, Lester and Jennifer Youngblood; siblings, Jemie, Joshua, Jeremy Youngblood, Abby, Ricky Lowe, John Jr., Ann Schifferli; grandparents.

William Matthews

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for William N. Matthews, 89, of West Columbia, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 12, 2005 in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, officiated by Dr. Phil Steyne, with burial at Southland Memorial Gardens. Viewing will take place at 12 noon before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, P.O. Box 1178, Greenwood, SC 29648.

Mr. Matthews, husband of Ruth Matthews, died Monday, January 10, 2005. Born in Lexington, he was a son of the late Doll Lewis and Florence Gertrude Malone Matthews. For over 60 years, Mr. Matthews was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbia. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1934 and served as a member of the US Army during WW II. Following 43 years of service, Mr. Matthews was retired from Southern Railway Company.

Surviving, besides his wife, are daughter, Barbara Matthews of Temecula, CA; son and his wife, William and Linda Matthews, Jr. of Charlotte, NC; sister, Ann Lever of Easley; brother, Bob Matthews of Lexington; and grandson, Chad Matthews.

Mr. Matthews was predeceased by a sister, Alice Florence Williamson and a brother, Charles O. Matthews.
