Julius Gibbs

HOPKINS — Services for Julius Theodore Gibbs are 1 p.m. (noon viewing) Saturday at Capital City Baptist Church with burial in Werts Cemetery. Wilson Funeral Home, Newberry, is in charge. Born in Newberry to William and Ruby Miller Gibbs, he died Jan. 10, 2005. Surviving: wife, Mamie Thomas Gibbs; children, ’Natara, Julius Jr., Shawn, Terence Gibbs; grandchildren; sisters; brother; aunt, nieces, nephews.

Willie Mae Coleman

SALUDA — Services with burial for Willie Mae Coleman, 83, homemaker, will be 2 p.m. (viewing 1 p.m.) Friday at Mt. Enon Baptist Church. Butler & Sons Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Saluda Co. to Tollie and Pauline Lott Norris, she died Jan. 10, 2005. Surviving: husband, Henry Coleman; daughter, Carolyn Dean; sister, Ora Martin; 9 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren.

William Floyd

TURBEVILLE — Services for William Willard Floyd, 44, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday (visitation 7-9 tonight) at Floyd Funeral Home, Olanta. Born in Clarendon County to William and Eliza Levenia Nettles Floyd, he died January 12, 2005. He was a graduate of East Clarendon High School and employed in the Public Works Dept. of Clarendon County. Surviving: brother, Joseph Floyd.

Genevieve Tilley

COLUMBIA — Genevieve Long Tilley, 88, passed away January 12, 2005, in Heartland of Columbia Retirement Home where she had lived for many years.

Mrs. Tilley was the youngest of thirteen siblings, whose parents were the late John T. and Donna McCarley Long of Anderson. Her father was a prominent Anderson banker and farmer in the 1920s. Her grandfather was the late Rev. Ezekiel Long of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Anderson. Long family relatives came to the upper part of S.C. from Scotland, whose records date to the mid 1700s.

She was raised in the Brushy Creek area of Anderson County on her family’s large farm known as Hickory Flat. They later moved to their Calhoun Street home in Anderson where the family flourished.

First married to Francis Hill Smith. To that union two daughters, Mrs. Donna Smith Thweatt Broglia, Colorado Springs, Co., and the late Martha “Mott” Smith Lee, Tarzana, Ca.

Four surviving grandchildren include William F. Thweatt, Houston, Tx., Ronald W. Thweatt, Colorado Springs, Co., L. Gwen Lee, Modesto, Ca., Nolan S. Lee, Tarzana, Ca., and preceded in death by grandson “Chip” Frank F. Thweatt, Jr., Columbia.

Other relatives include Mrs. Louis M. “Nancy” Long, Thomas M. Long, Everette B. Long, Mr. and Mrs. Stephen T. Draffin, all of Columbia, Mr. and Mrs. Don Waguespack, Atlanta, Ga., Mr. and Mrs. Louis H. Farmer, Jr., Upper St. Claire, Pa., and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cox, Belton, with many other nieces, nephews, and great grandchildren.

In 1950, she married Franklin Caldwell “Pete” Tilley. On his death in 1974, she returned to Columbia, culminating her career with Davidson’s-Macy’s Department Store. Mrs. Tilley later lived at Christopher Towers in the Five Points area.

Mrs. Tilley was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and a member of Rose Hill Presbyterian Church, Columbia.

Funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m., Saturday, January 15 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel, Columbia, with inurnment on Monday, January 17 in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Anderson, S.C.

Daisy Thompson

MANNING — Daisy Brunson Thompson, 94, widow of Lester Cain Thompson, Sr., died Tuesday, January 11, 2005, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born April 16, 1910, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Hampton and Sally Brunson. She was married in 1933 to Lester Cain Thompson, who predeceased her in 1987. She was a life long member of Jordan United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, Lester Thompson, Jr. (Shirley) of Manning, a daughter, Rose Chewning of Union; a sister, Sybil Asaro of Charleston; three grandchildren, Tommy Thompson (Kathy) of Manning, Cathy Thompson of Columbia and Kenneth Chewning of Augusta, GA; two great-grandchildren, Les Thompson of Manning and Brandi Thompson of Clemson.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Reggie Chewning; a son-in-law, Reginald Chewning; four brothers, Roy, Joe, Scott and Lester Brunson; and three sisters, Sara Johnson, Alice Brunson and Mattie Thompson.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 13, 2005, at the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Burial will follow in Brewington Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Thursday at Stephens Funeral Home prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to Manning First Baptist Church, 49 W. Boyce St., Manning, SC 29102, or to Meals On Wheels, P.O. Box 522, Manning, SC 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

Eullar Forsyth

DENMARK — Services with burial for Eullar Forsyth, 84, widow of Allen Forsyth Sr., are 1 p.m. Friday (noon viewing) at Honey Ford Baptist Church, visitation to follow. Carroll Mortuary is in charge. Born in Bamberg Co. to Lemuel and Lizzie N. Bennett, she died Jan. 5, 2005. Surviving: sons, Allen Jr., Alfred Forsyth; sisters, Eugenia Middleton, Flora Joyner, Mattie Stephens, Celia Miller; 4 grands; 2 great-grandchildren.

Rochertee Tyler

AIKEN — Services with burial for Rochertee Tyler, 88, Orangeburg Co. native, daughter of Abraham and Rozena Thomas Tyler, 2 p.m. Saturday at Oakey Spring Baptist Church, Salley. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Friday. Tobin Funeral Home, Salley, is in charge. Surviving: son, Phillip; grandchildren, Timothy, Brenda, Murray, Maryland, Modoc, Reuben, Blaine Tyler, Pamela Williams, Mae Tobin, Maxine Martin, Eugene Williams.

Esther Green

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.— A graveside service for Esther W. Green, 77, retired nurse assistant, is noon Saturday in Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery. Wilds’ Daughter Home for Funerals, Georgetown, SC is in charge. Born in Georgetown to Samuel Neal and Lelia Green Neal Parker, she died Jan. 6, 2005. Surviving: children, Samuel, Jean, Sandra, Lucinda Green, Lorraine Hooks, Sherry Umeugo, Sharon Scott.

Benny Prevette

GASTON — Services for Winfred DeLane “Benny” Prevette, 66, of Gaston, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, January 14, 2005, at the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, officiated by Pastor Jack W. Smith, with burial in Southland Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mr. Prevette passed on Monday, January 10, 2005. Born in Reesville, NC, he was the son of the late James Wilburn and Lillie Mae Gilley Prevette. Mr. Prevette was the proprietor of Benny’s Upholstery and Tack Shop.

Surviving are his wife, Sylvia of Gaston, daughters, Catherine M. Clark (Clyde) of Johnstown, OH, Rita Stewart (Mark) of West Columbia, Mary D. Lagatore of Garden City, Robin Prevette of Wagener, Velvet L. Glover (Dale) of Gaston, Merlene Vance of Hartsgrove, OH; sons, Gary L. Prevette of Gaston, James Moore of Swansea, William E. Moore of Gaston; sisters, Doris M. Bowlin of Columbia, Evon Prevette of Hopkins; 25 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

Mr. Prevette was predeceased by wives, Mary E. Westmoreland Prevette and Wanda Moore Prevette.

Anna Hipkins

GASTON — A memorial service for Mrs. Anna Elizabeth Bromley Hipkins will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 15, 2005, at Christian Life Assembly, 2700 Bush River Rd., Columbia, SC. Mrs. Hipkins, 82, of Gaston, SC, and formerly of Columbia, SC, died Tuesday morning, January 11, 2005.

Born in Boothwyn, PA, she was a daughter of the late James W. and Helen Webber Bromley. Mrs. Hipkins was a homemaker and was a member of the Christian Life Assembly, Columbia, SC.

She is survived by her husband of sixty-three years, Elmer W. Hipkins, sons, Richard “Rick” Hipkins, Columbia, SC, and Paul J. Hipkins, Chadds Ford, PA; and eight grandchildren. In addition to her parents, sons, David W. and Joel M. Hipkins preceded her in death.

Memorials may be made to the Christian Life Assembly, 2700 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29210.

Sam Taylor

WINNSBORO — Funeral Services for George Samuel Taylor will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 15 at Pope Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Paulette Crandall. Interment will be in Royal Pines Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Pope Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Mr. Taylor, 78, died Tuesday, January 11, 2005.

Born in Winnsboro, Fairfield County, he was the son of the late John Thomas Taylor and Fannie Rabon Taylor.

Mr. Taylor, widower of Gladys Usher Taylor, was a member of Stephen Greene Baptist Church, a U.S. Navy veteran and a retired painter.

Surviving: a son, Michael Taylor (wife Ruth), Rockaway, N.J., a daughter, Frances Taylor Lackey (husband Fred), South River, N.J., two sisters, Essie Taylor Bell, Winnsboro, Ida Taylor Bell, Union, S.C., four grandchildren, Michael Joseph Taylor, Fred Lackey Jr., Michael John Lackey and Tracy Lackey, and a number of nieces and nephews; caregiver, Lisa Achkar.

He was predeceased by brothers Ezell Taylor, Tyrene Taylor and Willie E. Taylor.
