Leslie Timmons

YEMASSEE — Leslie “Bud” Claire Timmons, 37, died Thursday, October 28, 2004 in the Allendale County Hospital, Allendale, SC as the result of an accident. He was born in Hampton, SC on October 1, 1967, a son of Linda Rankin Timmons and the late Jim Timmons.

He was employed by Collum Lumber Company of Allendale, SC, a member of the Coosawhachie Baptist Church and Captain of the Coosawhachie Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy P. Timmons of Coosawhachie, SC; his mother, Linda Rankin Timmons of Coosawhachie, SC; one son, Danny Timmons of Coosawhachie,, SC; one daughter, Nicky Timmons of Coosawhachie, SC; one brother, Lynn J. Timmons of Hinesville, GA and several aunts, uncles and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 31, 2004 in the Coosawhachie Baptist Church with burial in the Floyd Cemetery, Tillman, SC. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the church prior to the service. Memorials may be sent to the Coosawhachie Baptist Church, Building Fund, P.O. Box 479, Ridgeland, SC 29936 or the Coosawhachie Fire Department, 6429 W. Frontage Road, Coosawhachie, SC 29936.

Edith White

CLOVER — Edith Virginia Smith White, 75, of 110 Catawba St., Clover, S.C. died Friday October 29, 2004 at her home. She was formerly of 310 N. Pine St., Seneca, S.C. She was born in Seneca, S.C., the daughter of the late, Ben Ransom and Virginia Olive Smith and the wife of the late Charles Knox White. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd and Clarence Smith and one sister, Lois Rogers. She is survived by one daughter, Ruth W. Reeves of Clover, S.C., two sons, Charles R. White of Knoxville, Tenn. and Billy S. White of Gilbert, S.C., two brothers, Ben Smith and Randall Smith, both of Seneca, S.C., two sisters, Nellie Wilson and Dorothy Smith, both of Seneca, S.C., six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, November 1, 2004 at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Leo Kuykendall officiating at the Brown-Oglesby Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Oconee Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday from 12:30 to 2:00 PM prior to the service at the Brown-Oglesby Funeral Home of Seneca, S.C.

Harley Boltz

KERSHAW — Funeral services for Harley Thomas Boltz, 87, will be held Monday, November 1, 2004 at 3 pm from Midway Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Midway Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Randall Runion will officiate.

Born in Knox City, Missouri, Mr. Boltz died Friday, October 29, 2004 at his home. He was the son of the late Melvin Joshua and Mary Killen Boltz, and married to Erline Jewett Boltz. Mr. Boltz was a World War II veteran, serving his country with the Second Armored division. He was active in the North African Campaign, moving on to Sicily, and England. He was involved in the D-Day invasion to Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and invaded Germany when they surrendered. Mr. Boltz was a member of American Legion, Post #358, Knox City, Missouri and American Legion Post #31, Lancaster, SC, a long distance truck driver for many years, a truck driver for Sealtest Dairy Products in Lancaster, and a member of Midway Baptist Church.

He survived by his wife, of Kershaw, a son, Larry Boltz, and his wife, Janice, of Lancaster, a nephew, Bobby Carmean and his wife Betty, of Stronghurst, Illinois, a niece, Marilyn Powell and her husband Bill, of Oswego, Illinois. He was predeceased by a daughter Kay Boltz and a sister Leta Bell Pulse.

The family will receive friends, Sunday, October 31, 2004 from 2 to 3 pm at Baker Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Boltz’s memory may be made to the American Legion, Post #358, Knox City, Missouri, 63446 or American Legion Post #31, c/o Ernest Stroud, 8518 Flat Creek Road, Kershaw, S.C. 29067.

LADY'S ISLAND — Services for Annie L. “Jean” Allen DeVeaux, 60, are 11 a.m. Monday at New Hope Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Burton; burial in Beaufort National Cemetery. Marshel's Wright-Donaldson Home for Funerals, Beaufort, is in charge. Born in Beaufort Co. to Woodrow Sr. and Margie Allen. Surviving: husband, James DeVeaux; son, Larry Kerrin; 2 stepdaughters; 3 sisters; others.

Raymond Heider

AIKEN — Services for Raymond Adam Heider, 79, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday (visitation 6-8 tonight) at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Aiken Memorial Gardens. Born in Erie, Pa. to Joseph and Hazel Struchen Heider, he died October 29, 2004. Surviving are wife, Delores Volk Heider; sons, Robert, Thomas Heider; daughters, Connie Shade, Eileen Byrne, Marilyn Jolley; eight grandchildren.

Guynell Moore

LAKE CITY — A graveside service for Guynell Baker Moore, 84, widow of Jack Moore, is 4 this afternoon in Hebron UMC Cemetery. Brockington Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Kingstree to Major and Susan DuBose Baker, she died Oct. 29, 2004. She was a homemaker and member of Lake City UMC. Surviving are son, Randal Moore; sisters, Grace Baker, Fonza Orvin; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Terry Pitts Jr.

MYRTLE BEACH — Terry S. Pitts, Jr., 53, of Myrtle Beach, passed away on Saturday, October 30, 2004.

A private service will be held in Charleston on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lutheran Hospice, 900 Johnnie Dodds Blvd., Suite 200, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.

Mr. Pitts was born on September 13, 1951 in Columbia, SC and worked for 28 years as an optometrist in the Columbia and Myrtle Beach areas. He is survived by his father, Terry S. Pitts, Sr., a brother, Timothy Pitts, and three sisters, Rebecca P. Huggins, Patrice P. Matthews, and Cynthia P. Thompkins.

Carolyn Buck

AIKEN — Services for Carolyn Sue Whalen Buck, 59, are 3 p.m. today at Millbrook Baptist Church, where she was a member, with burial in Southlawn Cemetery. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home. Born in Harriman, Tenn. to William and Virginia Evans Whalen, she died Oct. 29, 2004. Surviving: father; husband, Eddie Buck; son, Gary Buck; grandchildren, Hannah, Naomi, Jacob Buck.

Mya Wright

DILLON — Services for Mya J. Wright, nine months, will be held at 3 this afternoon at United Pentecostal Church with burial in Rest Haven Cemetery. House of Thomas Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Dillon to Jeremiah Hughes and Laquita Wright, she died October 27, 2004. Surviving are parents; grandmother, Geneva Wright; grandparents, Michael, Tina Boatwright; great-grandparents.

Rev. Bill Corley Sr.

GREENWOOD — Services and burial for Rev. William Marion “Bill” Corley Sr., 86, are 3 p.m. Monday at First Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, where he was a member. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Blyth Funeral Home. Born in Greenwood Co. to Leonard and Carrie DeVore Corley, he died Oct. 30, 2004. Surviving: wife, Lillian Gantt Corley; children, Jimmy, William Corley, Nellie Griffin; six grands; nine great-grandchildren.

Mary Yon

NORTH — Services and burial for Mary Alice Yon, 74, widow of George Yon Sr., 11 a.m. Monday at Church of God By Faith. Visitation: 4-8 p.m. today at W.B. Crumel Funeral Home. Born to Cary and Mary Wright, she died Oct. 26, 2004. Surviving: children, Mary Saylor, Nancy Pauling, Gracie, Latissa Holloway, Deloris Keitt, Evelyn Moseley, Sara Singleton, Betty, J.D., George Jr., Ishun Yon; two sisters.

Larry Bladen

WEST COLUMBIA — A memorial service for James Laurence “Larry” Bladen, 80, will be held Sunday at 12:45 at Christ Unity Church, Columbia. Private burial will be in Peoples Cemetery, Chatham, Mass. Dunbar Funeral Home, Columbia, assisted the family.

Mr. Bladen died Tuesday, October 26, 2004. Born in Chatham, Mass., he was a son of the late R. Kenneth and Edith Van Ness Bladen. A 1942 graduate of Chatham Schools, he was an Army Air Corps veteran of WW II. He worked in the food service industry all of his life, working from Maine to Florida. He was employed by Suray Promotions of Cherry Hill, N.J. hiring and supervising in-store demonstrators for the BI-LO stores.

A resident of the Columbia area since 1978, Mr. Bladen was a founding member of Christ Unity Church of Columbia.

Surviving are nephew, Paul Bladen of Richmond, Va. and other nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to PALLS of Columbia or to a charity of one's choice.

Gertrude Cantey

COLUMBIA — Services for Gertrude English Cantey are 1 p.m. (viewing noon) Monday at Ladson Presbyterian Church with burial in Memorial Gardens of Columbia. Leevy's Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel is in charge. She died October 27, 2004. Surviving are children, Willie, Robert Cantey, James, Essie Jenkins; sisters, Bertha Blakely, Carrie Reese; brother, John English; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Judge Bratton Davis

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for The Honorable J. Bratton Davis will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral with burial in Elmwood Memorial Gardens. Serving as pallbearers will be Michael M. Beal, John B. Butler III, George B. Cauthen, Todd R. Ellis, Robert C. Kelly, R. Geoffrey Levy, William Bratton Riley, and W. Keenan Stephenson. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Judge Davis died Friday, October 29, 2004. Born in Hartsville on October 27, 1917, he was the elder son of the late John Bratton Davis and Sarah Causey “Dee” Davis. A 1938 graduate of the University of South Carolina and 1940 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law, he continued graduate study at Harvard Law School in 1941. He was commissioned as a line officer in the United States Navy serving during WW II principally in the South Pacific Theater of Operations.

From WW II until 1969, Judge Davis practiced law with the firm of Graydon, Davis and Suber. He was admitted to practice in all of the South Carolina courts, all of the federal courts and the High Court of American Samoa.

In 1948, the Junior Chamber of Commerce named Judge Davis “Columbia's Young Man of the Year.” He has served as: U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the District of South Carolina(1969-2000); Chief Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of S.C. (1986-2000); Chairman, State of South Carolina Development Board; Columbia Board of Directors of the South Carolina National Bank; Board of Directors of Security Federal Savings and Loan Association; President of the Columbia Museum of Art; Vestryman, Trinity Cathedral; member of the Judicial Conference of the Circuit Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit; member of the Security and Facilities Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States; member of the Board of Directors of the University of South Carolina Educational Foundation; member of the Board of Directors of the University of South Carolina Law School Partnership Board; member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia and Donald S. Russell Symposium Committee; member of the Board of Governors of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges; President of the Columbia Kiwanis Club; member of the Board of Directors of the Columbia Chapter of the American Red Cross; member of the Board of Directors of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis; Chairman of the Donald Russell Gubernatorial Inauguration Committee; member of the Board of Directors of the Byrnes Foundation; and member of the Board of Directors of the James F. Bynes Centennial Committee.

In 2000, Judge Davis was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, the highest honor conferred by the State of South Carolina.

The J. Bratton Davis U.S Bankruptcy Courthouse was so named in his honor upon his retirement from the bench in 2000.

He held memberships in: Forest Lake Club; Palmetto Club; Centurion Society; South Caroliniana Society; Kappa Alpha Order; Omicron Delta Phi; The Columbia Ball; and South Carolina Historical Society.

Judge Davis is survived by his wife, Margaret Smyth McKissick Davis; sons, Sherwood McKissick Cleveland and his wife, Kathleen of Camden, and William Choice Cleveland and his wife, Anne of Charleston; daughter, Jean Davis Bruton and her husband, John C. Bruton, Jr. of Columbia; brother, John Thorne Davis of Charleston; and grandchildren, Sherwood McKissick Cleveland Jr., Samuel Henry Edmunds Cleveland, John Connor Cleveland, Braden Cleveland Bergan, Margaret Cleveland Pitts, William Choice Cleveland IV, Margaret McKissick Bruton and John Calvin Bruton III.
