Mary Jackson

ORANGEBURG — Services for Mary L. Dinkins Jackson, 56, 11 a.m. Thursday (visitation 11 a.m.-9 tonight) at Simmons Funeral Home with burial in Belleville Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Born in Millen, Ga., to Ernest and Donie Chance Dinkins, she died Jan. 15, 2005. Surviving: grandsons, Ronheme Dinkins, Rakim Jones; siblings, Suzette Burgess, Carey Wright, Edward, Melvin, Crawford Dinkins; more.

Ray Moseley Jr.

COLUMBIA — Services for Ray Virginius Moseley, Jr., will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel with interment to follow in Woodridge Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be his grandsons. The family will receive friends from 12-1:30 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Northeast Presbyterian Church, 601 Polo Road, Columbia, SC 29223 or S.C. Comprehensive Breast Center/S.C. Colorectal Fund, 9 Richland Medical Park, Ste. 600, Columbia, SC 29203.

Mr. Moseley died Monday, January 17, 2005. He was born November 20, 1921, in Memphis, Tennessee, a son of the late Annie Halbach and Ray V. Moseley, Sr.

Mr. Moseley was a political science major at Memphis State University and received his LLB Degree from the University of Mississippi. He served in the USNR as Lt. Jg in the South Pacific from 1942-1946. Mr. Moseley served in the Tennessee State Legislature from 1948-1950. He retired as Executive Vice President and CEO of Florida Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company. He had a 33 year career with Farm Bureau including claims manager in Arkansas, and CEO of Georgia and South Carolina Farm Bureau. After his retirement from Florida Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company, he opened Moseley and Associates Consulting Firm in Columbia. He many times shared how he enjoyed all the challenges and friends he made in his career.

Mr. Moseley served as a member of the board of directors of a number of local companies and committees. Among them are Junior Achievement of Greater Columbia, Inc., First National Bank of SC, SC Windstorm and Hail Underwriting Association, Board of Governors of the SC Reinsurance Facility, Operating Committee, Legal Committee, and Appeals Panel of SC Reinsurance Facility, Board of Directors of SC Medical Malpractice Liability Insurance, SC Insurance Guaranty Association and Advisory Committee of SC Insurance Services. Ray Moseley was instrumental in the organization of the SC Insurance News Service. He was appointed to serve on the Governor’s Task Force on Arson. As Mr. Moseley served on these boards and committees, he held several positions as Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Treasurer of these sometimes new and instrumental organizations that have led the way for positive direction for insurance industry.

Besides being a leader in the insurance industry, Ray Moseley was a dedicated husband and father. He had a tremendous faith in God and inspired all of those around him. He was a member of Northeast Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mercedes Scully Moseley; son, Ray V. Moseley, III and wife, Janine of Lexington; daughters, Anna Webb and husband, Stacey of Augusta, GA, Dianne Ravenel and husband Steve of Clearwater, FL, Joanne Rabon and husband Terry of Conway, SC, and Suzanne Flowers and husband Kent of Lexington, SC; brother, Robert Moseley of Dacula, GA; sister, Dorothy Caldwell of Memphis, TN; cousin, Virginia Lee Mahan of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Ray V. Moseley, IV, Michael Webb, R. Boyd Webb, Trey Ravenel, Michelle Rabon, Cecile Rabon, Melinda Flowers, Westin Flowers, D.J. Fuller, Carol Webb, and Jennifer Maddux; great-grandchildren, Taylor Webb, Hailie Moseley, Mackenzie Webb, Grace Webb, and Robert B. Webb, Jr., Lauren Maddux; and dog, Jeb.

Jean Oliver

COLUMBIA — Graveside service for Jean Legette Oliver, 96, will be held Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to Shandon United Methodist Church, Columbia, S.C., or the Lowman Home, White Rock, S.C.

Miss Oliver died Monday, January 17, 2005, in Columbia. Born on October 20, 1908, in Lake City, S.C., she was a daughter of the late David Haskell Oliver and Marion McNeill Thomas Oliver. A graduate of Hemingway High School and Winthrop College, Class of 1930, she retired as a teacher, having taught at Cottageville, Georgetown, Hemingway and Dentsville. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, President of the Wade Hampton Literary Society, member of Shandon United Methodist Church, former member and teacher of Good Will Sunday School Class, member of the official Board of WSCS, and a member of the Education Society.

Miss Oliver is survived by nieces, Mary Oliver Quattlebaum of Jacksonville, Fla., and Carol Oliver Davis of Southaven, Miss., nephews, Robert H. Oliver of N. Augusta, S.C, and Richard T. Oliver of Columbia; grandnieces, Megan Drennon, Virginia and Katherine Oliver; grandnephew, Alexander Quattlebaum; and great-grandniece, Olivia Drennon.

She was predeceased by her sister, Marion Barbara Oliver of Columbia; brothers, David M. Oliver of Calhoun City, Miss., and Thomas A. Oliver of Columbia; and great-grandniece, Lydia Drennon.

Burtte Powers

COLUMBIA — Services for Burtte Kempson Powers, 84, will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with entombment in Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society SPCA.

Mrs. Powers, wife of sixty years to the late M.R. Powers, passed away Monday evening, January 17, 2005. She was born and reared in Charlotte, N.C., one of three children of B.A. and Bessie Kempson. She met her future husband, M.R. Powers, in Charlotte, and they were married in 1943 while he was stationed in Kentucky. She attended secretarial college, and, when her husband was stationed overseas during World War II, she worked in Savannah, Georgia, for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. After the war, she was a homemaker until she and M.R. began the Columbia Farm Equipment Company and the Palmetto Equipment Company where she worked until her retirement.

Surviving are her son, Randy Powers, and his wife, Pam, of Lexington; and two grandsons, Zac and Trent Powers.

Clara Palmer

ANDREWS — Services with burial for Clara Edyth Beverly Palmer, 86, widow of Rev. Primas Palmer Sr., daughter of Spencer and Hanna Frazier Beasley, are 1 p.m. Thursday at Charity Baptist Church. Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, Kingstree, is in charge. She died Jan. 15, 2005. Surviving: children, Windell, Bobby, Steven, Howard Palmer, Sarah Bradshaw; grandchildren great-grandchildren; more.

Donald Riley

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Services for Mr. Donald “Monk” Riley, 24, are 2 p.m. Thursday (viewing at 1 p.m.) at Second Nazareth Baptist Church with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Wake services will be held 7 this evening at Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel. Surviving are his daughter, Ayanti Riley; mother, Doris Brown; father, Donald Morant; guardian, Larry Sanders Sr.; sisters; brothers; grandparents.

Annie Slater

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Annie Louise Slater, 85, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Manning Cemetery, Manning, S.C., at 3:30 p.m. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church.

Miss Slater died Tuesday, January 18, 2005. Born in Manning, S.C., she was the daughter of the late George Henry Slater and Edna Brockinton Slater. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a nephew, Robert E. “Bob” Lee, Jr. and his wife, Cathy, and their son Robby of Atlanta; and her dog, Twinkles.

Waid Toy

COLUMBIA — Services for Waid S. Toy, 85, will be held Thursday January 20th at 3 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, White Rock, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, January 19th at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel. Memorials may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 367, White Rock, SC 29177.

Mr. Toy died Monday, January 17, 2005. Born in Adrian, Pa., he was the son of the late Curtis and Mary Hooks Toy. He was a graduate of Kittanning High School, was a 1947 graduate of Pennsylvania State University, and later attended the University of South Carolina for graduate studies. He was a life member of PENN State alumni association.

Serving South Carolina for over 50 years, Mr. Toy retired as Chief of Rural Manpower with the South Carolina Employment Security Commission. For his loyal service to the state of South Carolina, he was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by Governor Carroll Campbell and presented with a Legislative Proclamation honoring his lifetime of service.

Mr. Toy was a WW II Army veteran and a former Prisoner of War, captured at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a life member of the 106th Infantry Division Association and served on its national board of directors. He was a life member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War, a member of its Palmetto Chapter, and a member of the Battle of the Bulge Organization. For many years, Mr. Toy and his wife served as annual reunion hosts for the 106th Infantry Division for veterans in North and South Carolina.

A longtime member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Mr. Toy served in many capacities, including 26 years as church treasurer, Sunday School teacher, council member and call committee member. Mr. Toy was also an honorary life member and officer of Lutheran Men in Mission and the Committee of One Hundred.

Mr. Toy was a life member and past Master and Treasurer of Boyleston Lodge #123, A.F.M. In Addition, Mr. Toy was a member of the York Rite Masonic Order.

Surviving are his wife, Vannie Meetze Toy; son, Waid Douglas Toy and his wife, Cylvia of Centreville, Va.; two grandchildren, Allison Toy-Lee and her husband, L. Wayne Lee, Jr. of Gilbert and Ashley Kathryn Toy of Philadelphia, Pa.; stepgranddaughter, Leah Elizabeth Lemon of Centreville, Va.; and two special friends, G.O. Bone and Ken Corbett. Mr. Toy was the last surviving member of his immediate family, he was predeceased by five brothers and three sisters.

The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Carroll Pinner, III, the members of Richland County EMS staff and the staff of the Lexington Medical Center’s emergency and third floor intensive care staff for their exceptional quality of care.

Henry Simon

COLUMBIA — Services for Mr. Henry Lee Simon will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at True Vine Outreach Ministries, Eastover, with burial in Daughter of Zion Church Cemetery. Wake services will be held 6 this evening at Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel. Surviving are his son, Calvin Simon; 2 brothers; 5 sisters; companion, Chestenie Shell; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

W. Carl Smyre

COLUMBIA — Services for W. Carl Smyre, 89, will be held at the graveside in Sumter Cemetery in Sumter at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 20. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mr. Smyre died Sunday, January 16, 2005. Born in Charleston, he was the son of the late Herbert Hillary and Mathilda Gerken Smyre. He retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company in 1981 with 45 years of service. He graduated from Charleston High School and attended Clemson College. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation, Telephone Pioneers of America, Pythagorean Lodge #21, AFM and Omar Shrine Temple in Charleston.

Surviving are his widow, Annie Mae Jones Smyre; son, William C. Smyre, Jr. and daughter-in-law Barbara of Marietta, Ga.; and two granddaughters, Bonnie and Holly Smyre. He is also survived by brothers, Luther H. of Mount Pleasant, Harold R. of Sunnyvale, Calif. and Randolph H. and sister-in-law, Jane of Charleston; and nieces and nephews.

The family suggest that those desiring may make a memorial to the charity of one’s choice.

Henry Wessinger

COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Henry Richard “Red” Wessinger, 79, of Columbia, will be held at 11 o’clock Thursday afternoon, January 20, 2005, at Christ’s Lutheran Church. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o’clock this (Wednesday) at Shives Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ’s Lutheran Church, 1323 Winyah Drive, Columbia SC 29203 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Mr. Wessinger died Monday, January 17, 2005. Born in Columbia on October 7, 1925, he was the son of the late James W. and Virginia Taylor Wessinger. Mr. Wessinger was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran of WWII. He was employed as an auto mechanic at Hampton Pontiac for 36 years and was an auto technician at the Department of Mental Health from which he retired. Mr. Wessinger was a member of the American Bowling League; he was an avid fisherman and bowler. He was a member of Christ’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include: his wife of 57 years, Madalynn M. Wessinger of Columbia; sons, Richard and Michael Wessinger of Swansea; daughter, Barbara W. Johnson of West Columbia; 6 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson; a brother, Reverend John W. Wessinger of Chapin; sister, Ann Ray of Lexington; a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Wessinger was preceded in death by brothers, Ira, George, Brooks, Milton and Harold; sisters, Margaret Bradwell, Lois Taylor and Leola Meetze.
