Claude White

UNION — A graveside service for Claude Theodore White, 89, widower of Eula Russell White and Ethel Beaty White, is 2 p.m. Thursday in Union Memorial Gardens. S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Union to Grover and Lelia Callahan White, he died Jan. 17, 2005. Surviving are son, W.W. White; sister, Pearl Rebenaker; grandsons, Billy, Kenneth, Donald White; great-grandchildren.

Sadie Williams

CHARLOTTE — Services for Sadie Forman Williams, 56, will be held at 3 p.m. today at Chapel of Remembrance Brown’s Funeral Home, Camden, S.C., with burial in Canty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Born in Cassatt, S.C., to Jessie James and Lacey Charles Forman, she died January 15, 2005. Surviving are her daughter, Anita Boykin; son, Sammie Forman; 7 sisters; 6 brothers; 5 grandchildren.

Viola Woods

ALLENDALE — Services for Viola S. Woods, 78, daughter of James and Lucy Capers Smart, widow of Marion Woods, are 1:30 p.m. today at Simpson UMC with burial in Bentley Cemetery, Appleton. She died Jan. 13, 2005. Surviving: children, Mary Williamson, Gloria Miller, Ambrice Conners, Marion Jr., Frederick Woods; 6 sisters; 3 brothers; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Anne Yates

COLUMBIA — Annie Rosamond Horne “Anne” Yates, 91, of 5225 Clemson Avenue died January 17, 2005. Born in Jacksonville, North Carolina in 1913, she was the daughter of William Hill Horne and Ruth Jennings Murrell Horne. After graduating from East Carolina University, she wed Mason Farquhar Yates in 1940 and shortly thereafter made her home in Columbia.

As a social studies teacher at Hand Junior High School for 22 years, she touched the lives of many of her young students by sharing her love of our earth’s people and places. An avid bridge player, she attained Life Master status while introducing many Columbians to the game in the city’s first duplicate bridge center.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her three children, Emily Yates Jordan, Jennings Yates Howard, and John Mason Yates and his wife Sandy. Her beloved grandchildren include Jenny Jordan Latour, James Allen Jordan, Claudia Ainsley Howard, John Mason Yates, Jr., Kathryn Yates Poe and husband Kelley, Emily Brooks Howard and Andrew Gray Howard. She is also survived by sister, Ruth Horne Ranier of Elizabeth City, N.C.

A visitation will be held on Friday, January 21, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. A memorial service celebrating her life will be on Saturday, January 22 at 11:00 a.m. Both gatherings will take place at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Hospice, PO Box 7275, Columbia, SC 29202 or to The American Red Cross.

Mrs. Yates’ immediate family wishes to express sincere gratitude to her “extended family,” the staff at Life Care Center of Columbia, for their constant love, care and support.

Ashton Bozard

MANNING — Ashton Plowden Bozard, 94, widow of Dr. Asbury Cecil Bozard, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at her home in Manning.

Born April 24, 1910, she was a daughter of the late Hugh Ashton and Lizzie Oliver Plowden. She was a secretary-bookkeeper for D.W. Alderman & Sons Lumber Company and Alcolu Railroad Company, and also kept the books for her husband’s medical practice. She attended Draughon’s Business College in Columbia. She was married in 1936 for 42 years until her husband’s death in 1978. Mrs. Bozard was a member of The Presbyterian Church at Manning where she participated in various activities in church work, and enjoyed playing bridge and gardening.

Surviving are two sons, Dr. Asbury Cecil Bozard, Jr. and wife, Barrie, of Edisto, Dr. Henry Plowden (Mutt) Bozard and wife, Lynne, of Manning; a sister, Mary Miller (Maley) Hudson and husband, Dr. W.C., of Wilmington, NC; grandchildren, Henry Plowden (Bo) Bozard, Jr. of Manning, Ashton Ellis Bozard of Columbia, Laura B. Richardson and husband, Trey, of Atlanta, and A. Cecil Bozard, III of Charleston; two great grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and caregivers, Dennis Reynolds, Betty Welch, Shirley Jackson, Gwen Tisdale and Maxine Cook.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Irene Thomas, Helen Dickson, Winnie Green and Isabelle DuBose; a brother, Hugh Ashton Plowden, Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, January 20, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Debra Quilling and the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating. Burial will follow in Manning Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and at other times at the residence of Mutt and Lynne Bozard, 1270 Hickory Ridge, Manning.

Memorials may be made to the Manning Chapter, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun Street, Sumter, SC 29150 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

Sis Hughes

GREENWOOD — Services for Elsie Anderson “Sis” Hughes, 84, widow of Richard Hughes, will be held at 2 p.m. today (visitation 1-2 p.m.) at Harley Funeral Home with private burial. Born in Greenwood to Joe and Lessie Hinton Anderson, she died January 17, 2005. Surviving: daughter, Linda Phillips; son, Larry Hughes; sister, Vivian Edwards; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Janie Kirkland

LUGOFF — Funeral services for Janie Perry Kirkland, 95, will be held on Thursday, January 20, 2005, at 3 p.m. at Concord Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Tom Schoonmaker and Rev. Bryant Spivey will officiate. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 19, 2005, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home Lugoff-Elgin Chapel. Memorials may be made to Concord Baptist Church Building Fund, 2211 Porters Crossroads, Lugoff, SC 29078.

Mrs. Kirkland, widow of Arthur Ernest Kirkland, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Mosby and Lizzie Brown Perry. Mrs. Kirkland was a member of Concord Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for 70 years, was Concord Baptist “Mother of the Year,” church pianist for a number of years and had a classroom named in her honor. She will be forever remembered, cherished, and loved by her family.

Surviving are children, Helen Belle Motley and her husband, Claude, of Elgin, Marion E. Kirkland and his wife, Mary, of Lugoff, 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Louise L. Kirkland and Jackie Kirkland; sister, Valdora Rose of Elgin. She was predeceased by sons, Powell Kirkland and Perry Kirkland, sisters, Eunice Perry and Liddie Perry Goff, brothers, Jesse Perry and Sumter Perry. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers and great grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family would like to thank the staff of Springdale Health Care for their kindness to our Mother and family.

Lavern Ledford

DARLINGTON — Services for Lavern N. Ledford, 73, will be 3 p.m. today at Central Baptist Church with burial in Darlington Memory Gardens. Belk Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Langley to Esper and Ruby Ferrell Ledford, he died Jan 17, 2005. Surviving: daughters, Debbie Galloway, Tina Owens, Teri Culick, Laura Avery; 11 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; siblings, Sandra DeBerry, Sara Owens, Johnny Ledford.

Jennie Gary

CHERAW — Services for Jennie Lou Gary, 68, will be at 2 p.m. today at Pee Dee Union Baptist Church with burial in McCall Family Cemetery. Reid’s Funeral Home is in charge. Mrs. Gary died January 14, 2005, in Chesterfield General Hospital.

Wayne Moore

GREENWOOD — Services for Wayne Oscar Moore, 66, USAF veteran, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday (visitation 7-9 tonight) at Harley Funeral Home, burial, with military rites, is in Elmwood Cemetery. Born in Ninety Six to Roy and Geneva Fortner Moore, he died January 17, 2005. Surviving are his children, Melody Mack, Kim King, Pat, Greg and Howard Moore; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

John Richardson

HILTON HEAD ISLAND — John Maxwell Richardson of Port Royal Plantation has passed away. He was born in Aiken, SC, on December 24, 1913, the son of Maj. John M. Richardson, Sr. (USA-Ret.) and Emma Steele Richardson. He was the youngest of five children. He is survived, in marriage, by his wife, Vivienne Batten Bostick Richardson, formerly of Estill; two sons, Phillip C. Richardson of Harrodsburg, KY, and John (Skip) Richardson of Kernersville, NC; four grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; two stepsons, Joe M. Bostick, III and Robert B. Bostick and five stepgrandchildren and devoted friend, Thomas Madison.

Mr. Richardson was an engineer during World War II working on major projects such as radar for ship and aircraft detection and various communications projects in the defense industry. He worked on the development of magnetic wire recording and established the Brookfield Wire Company in Brookfield, MA, in 1948 to produce extremely fine wires for U.S. military communication equipment. Mr. Richardson sold the wire company and purchased several other manufacturing companies over the next few years. He retired as chairman of the board of RSC industries of Opa Locka, FL, in 1985. Mr. Richardson was an accomplished private pilot who owned and flew many different aircraft for business and pleasure for over 50 years.

He owned and lived for many years on Gravel Hill Plantation in Garnett, SC, until fully retiring to Hilton Head in 1988.

Private services were held. Graveside services will be held Thursday, January 20, at 2 p.m. in Lawtonville Cemetery, Estill.

The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Island Hospice, 300 New River Parkway, Suite 300, Hardeeville, SC 29927.

Clyde Ross

ROCK HILL — Services for Clyde Ray Ross, 82, Army, Navy and Merchant Marine veteran, 1 p.m. today: West End Baptist Church, burial in Laurelwood Cemetery. Greene Funeral Home, NW, is in charge. Born in Danville, Va., to Hattie Ross Robinson, he died Jan. 16, 2005. Surviving: wife, Doris H. Ross; daughters, Donna Lewis, Cathy Raniszewski; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; siblings, Louise Steel, Lee Ross.
