William Turner

COLUMBIA — Memorial services for William Thomas Turner, 56, of Columbia will be held Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at 5:00 p.m. in the chapel at Greenlawn Funeral Home. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior and following the service. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in honor of Holly Turner or to the charity of choice. Greenlawn Funeral Home is in charge.

Mr. Turner died January 17, 2005. He was born September 19, 1948, in Lexington, KY. He was the son of the late George T. and Mary Tolin Turner and the husband of Terry Francis Turner. Bill served in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam. He was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel in 1967 by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He also was a 19 year employee with the VA Hospital in Lexington and Columbia. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Surviving to honor and cherish his memory are his wife of 22 years, Terry, daughter, Holly of Lexington, KY, sister-in-law, Judy S. Turner; granddaughter, Abbie V. Turner; nieces, Beth Ann Dutton and Megan Robinson; nephews, Clay Turner and Craig Francis; his dogs of many years, Scarlet and Shadow; predeceasing was his brother, Terry Wayne Turner.

Patricia Trueheart

FT. WASHINGTON, Md. — Services for Patricia Weeks Trueheart are noon today (visitation 11 a.m. prior) at Ft. Foote Baptist Church with burial in Lincoln Cemetery, Suitland, Md. Bell Funeral Home, Temple Hills, Md., is in charge. Mrs. Trueheart died January 12, 2005. Surviving: husband, Jeremiah Trueheart Sr.; son, Jeremiah Trueheart Jr.; brothers, Malcolm and James Weeks; nieces, nephews; other relatives.

Elizabeth Hasting

SALUDA — Elizabeth Burnett Hasting, 93, of 3004 Old Edgefield Road, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005, in Saluda Nursing Center.

Born in Saluda County, and a daughter of the late Butler and Carrie Leopard Burnett, she was the wife of the late Jacie Lee Hasting. Mrs. Hasting had retired from Greenwood Mills - Ninety Six Plant and was a member of Friendship Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at Ramey Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, January 20, 2005, at Friendship Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Boyd Arnold officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Friendship Pentecostal Holiness Church, 9602 Hwy. 178 S., Saluda, SC 29138.

Ramey Funeral Home is in charge.

Louise Palmer

SUMTER — Services in Mayesville for Louise Marshall Palmer, 87, widow of Henry Palmer, 2 p.m. (viewing 1 p.m.) Thursday: Ebenezer AME Church, burial: Mayesville Cemetery. Job’s Mortuary is in charge. Born in Sumter to Willie Sr. and Mary Marshall, she died Jan. 15, 2005. Surviving: daughter, Margie Richardson; adopted daughter, Delores Davis; stepchildren; brother; grands, great, great-great-grandchildren.

Gene Mack

MANNING — Services with burial for Gene Oliver Mack, 54, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Green Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Visitation is 6-7 tonight at Dyson’s Home for Funerals. Born in Clarendon Co. to Ashby and Sarah Jones Mack, he died Jan. 16, 2005. Surviving: companion, Katie Mae Baxter; children, Donnie Mack, Regina Pompey; siblings, James, Arthur Mack, Barbara Thames; grandchildren; others.

John Peebles

SUMTER — Services for John Eldridge Peebles, 80, U.S. Army (Ret.) 2 p.m. Thursday (visitation 6-8 tonight) at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home, burial in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors. Born in Gable to Mason Sr. and Alice Newman Peebles, he died Jan. 18, 2005. Surviving: wife, Joan Norton Peebles; children, John Peebles, Deborah Walsh; 2 grandchildren; brother; 3 sisters.

George Williams Jr.

SUMTER — Services with burial for George “Bobby” Williams Jr., 65, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday (viewing 3 p.m.) at Unionville AME Church, St. Charles. Williams Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Bishopville to Josephine A. Toney and George Anderson, he died January 14, 2005, in Jersey City, N.J. Surviving: mother; two brothers; six sisters; two stepsisters; three stepbrothers; two uncles.

Reggie Storey Sr.

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. — Funeral services for Retired U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Reggie L. Storey, Sr., 54, of Leavenworth, KS, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, January 21, 2005, at Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel with full military honors following. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends at Greenlawn Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Mr. Storey died Saturday, January 15, 2005, at his residence. Born in Columbia, SC, on July 1, 1950, he was the son of the late George Goff and Frances Jackson, and was raised by his adopted parents, James W. Storey and Edna Storey Davis. Mr. Storey graduated from Lower Richland High School in 1968, and then served in the U.S. Army from July 23, 1968 until July 31, 1988. Following his retirement from the military, he owned and operated the Paradise Lounge. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and of the American Legion.

Surviving Mr. Storey are his wife, Glenna Jean Babbitt Storey of Leavenworth, KS; two daughters, Tonja Troyan and her husband Frank of Summerville, SC, and Marlene Wall and her husband Larry of Hampton, VA; two sons, Reggie Storey, Jr. and his wife Marlissa of Asheville, NC, and Greg Babbitt of Huntington Beach, CA; one sister, Nancy Shirey and her husband Robert of Gaston, SC; one brother, Ronnie Storey of Jacksonville, FL; and seven grandchildren, Frankie and Zachary Troyan, of Summerville, SC, Courtney, Caitlyn and Chelsea Wall of Hampton, VA, and Christian and Michael Storey of Asheville, NC.

Samuel Barrett

GREENWOOD — Services for Samuel Eugene “Sam” Barrett, 89, will be noon Thursday (visitation 11 a.m.-noon) at Blyth Funeral Home with burial in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Born in Rome, Ga., to John and Lela Walters Barrett, he died Jan. 18, 2005. Surviving: wife, Katherine Battles Barrett; daughter, Jo Anne Smith; sisters, Effie Griffin, Clara Warren, Irene Marbut; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Archie Beattie

BISHOPVILLE — Archie Beattie, age 91, of Bishopville, died Monday, January 17, 2005, after an extended illness.

He is survived by his wife, Ann McCutchen McDonald Beattie; two daughters, Harvie Beattie Abney and Caroline Beattie Bowen; five stepchildren, George Gregg Cooper, Marsha Ann Cooper Gentry, Thomas English Cooper, John Michael McDonald, and Robert Norman McDonald; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Judge Beattie was born on February 22, 1913, in Kershaw County. He was educated at the University of South Carolina, and received his law degree there in 1935. He practiced with the law firm Bennett, Shand, and McGowan in Columbia until he entered the U.S. Air Force in 1943. He served in the Pacific Theatre.

After the war he lived in Lee County for the remainder of his life. Judge Beattie served as Master in Equity, Probate Judge, Family Court Judge, and farmed extensively in Wisacky.

Judge Beattie was a long time member of the Bishopville Presbyterian Church and served as an elder there.

Memorial contributions may be made to James House Memorial Garden, P.O. Box 684, Bishopville, SC 29010 or Bishopville Presbyterian Church, 2155 S. Main St., Bishopville, SC 29010.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 20, 2005, at the Bishopville Presbyterian Church.

Burial will be in the Bishopville Presbyterian Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at 110 S. Heyward St., Bishopville.

Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

Gilbert Elkins Sr.

WALTERBORO — Mr. Gilbert Gordon Elkins, Sr., 68, of 1836 Hiers Corner Road, Walterboro, died Monday, January 17, 2005, in Colleton Medical Center.

Mr. Elkins was born April 26, 1936, in Richland County, a son of the late Olympia Preston Elkins and Mary Love Gordon Elkins. He was a retired Sergeant First Class from the South Carolina National Guard, having been the supervisor over the maintenance motor pool department. He served his country in Turkey with combined NATO forces. National Guard Units where he served were: Union, Mt. Pleasant, Summerville, and Walterboro, SC. He was the former owner and operator of Elkins Firecracker Stand. He was a member of Unity #55 Masonic Lodge, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, Lodge #1988. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, Past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge, was a Shriner, and was a member of the Scottish Rites. He loved animals and loved to cook, and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are: his wife, Faye Spires Elkins; sons, Gilbert G. Elkins, Jr., CPO III, stationed in Iraq, and John W. Elkins of Columbia; daughters, Gail Elkins of Gaffney, and Wanda Elkins of Gilbert; sister, Hennie Maxwell of Lexington; 6 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to: The Shriners Hospitals for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, Florida 33607-1460.

Family and friends may call Thursday evening from 6 until 9 p.m., with a Masonic Service at 8 p.m., at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Walterboro Chapel, 1193 Bells Highway, Walterboro.
