Edmond Cooper

LEESVILLE - Edmond Cooper loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather - age 86, of Leesville, South Carolina died February 7, 2005, after a brief illness. Ed was the son of Andrew Jackson Cooper and Rosie Marie Williams, and was born in Salley, South Carolina on July 30, 1918. He was married to Melba E. Rodgers, daughter of Bersheba Hall and Merso Rodgers, for almost 57 years. He is survived by his wife Melba, his sister Bernice Cooper Rowe, and Edmond and Melba’s family of two children and their spouses, 8 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Edmond served as a Staff Sergeant in Company “B” of the 11th Engineering Combat Battalion during World War II. He participated in the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns, earning several medals including the American Defense Service Medal with One Bronze Service Star, the EAMET Campaign Medal with Two Bronze Service Stars, the American Theatre Campaign Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal. He went on to continue his service as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army from which he retired in 1968, having also earned a National Defense Service Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster).

Edmond and Melba married in 1948. Their son and his wife are Ronald Edmond Cooper and Veva Richter, and their daughter and her husband are Kathryn Faith Cooper and Gregory Hugh Smith. Their grandchildren are Jennifer Cooper, Christopher Cooper, Regina S. and Shane C. Joiner, Christina S. and Daniel B. Winters, Katrina S. and Cory K. Critchley, Adina K. Smith, Gregory H. M. Smith and Benjamin A. L. Smith. Their great-grandchild is Amelia Grace Winters.

Visitation for Edmond will be held at Wagener Chapel of Blizzard Funeral Home on February 9, 2005, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. The funeral home is located at 163 South Main Street, Wagener, South Carolina. On February 10, 2005, there will be a 3:00 P.M. Funeral Service at Convent Baptist Church, located at 787 Convent Church Road, Leesville, South Carolina, 29070 followed by a Burial Service in the family’s plot in the cemetery of Pauline Church of Christ on Route 178 in Fairview, South Carolina. Both will be accompanied by full military honors.

The Reverends Bill Padgett, Jimmy F. Rodgers, and Sam Fulmer will officiate at the Funeral Service. The Love Sunday School Class and Deacons of Convent Baptist Church will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

The family asks that those wishing to make contributions in lieu of flowers contribute to Convent Baptist Church or to The American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, G. A. 30358.

James P. "Pete" Gilbert, Jr.
PELION - A Graveside Service for Mr. James Preston "Pete" Gilbert, Jr., 78, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, February 7th in the Dean's Chapel Cemetery near Saluda.

Mr. Gilbert was born in Anderson County, the son of the late James P. Gilbert, Sr. and Martha Sellars Gilbert. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy,

Mr. Gilbert is survived by sons Terry and Johnny Gilbert of California, sister Pauline Storey, and close friends Gerald and Carolyn Pilot all of Lexington. Special thanks to his care givers at the Brian Center. Arrangements conducted by Blizzard Funeral Home, 153 South Main St, Wagener (803) 564-5333.

Boyce L. Gunter, Sr.

November 20, 1931 - January 6, 2005

SALLEY - Mr. Boyce Lafayette Gunter, Sr., 73, entered into rest Thursday January 6th, 2005.

Mr. Gunter was born in Aiken County. He was the son of the late Willie and Iva Poole Gunter. He was a member of Clinton United Methodist Church and a Veteran of the U. S. Air Force having served his country during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Gunter greatly enjoyed the time he spent selling peanuts for the Children's Miracle Network Charity .

Mr. Gunter is survived by his wife of 51 years, Wanda Harmon Gunter, sons Boyce L. Gunter, Jr. and his wife Ho Suk of Leavenworth, KS, Winford W. and his wife Vanette Gunter of Starkville, MS and Eugene F. and his wife Dorothy Gunter of Lexington, daughter Wanette G. and her husband Eddie Rish of Wagener, 9 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 9th from 6 to 8 p.m., Blizzard Funeral Home, 163 South Main St., Wagener, S.C. (803) 564-5333.

The Funeral Service will be Monday, January 10th at 2:00 p.m., Clinton United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jack Poole officiating. Mr. Gunter will be placed in the church at 1:00 p.m.. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Clinton United Methodist Church at 333 Hollow Creek Road, Salley, S.C. 29137.

Raymond Henderson Wagener

Mr. Raymond Howard Henderson, 70 of 397 Edisto Lake Road, entered into rest Sunday January 2nd, 2005 at his residence after a valiant battle with cancer. Mr. Henderson was born on August 5, 1934 in Columbia, son of the late Jesse R. "Bud" and Bettie Metz Henderson of Columbia. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wagener.

Mr. Henderson was a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Until his retirement in 1991, he worked in Naval Intelligence, focusing on underwater acoustics. His research on nuclear submarines and noise reduction during the Cold War led to the development of new national defense strategies and new Naval systems.

After his 31 year career, Mr. Henderson retired home to South Carolina. He was designated a Master Tree Farmer, with long leaf and loblolly tree farms in Kitchings Mill and Perry. He enjoyed his John Deere tractor and bush hogging.

Mr. Henderson is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Amelia Brodie Henderson, daughters and sons-in-law Ramona and Dennis Brady of Houston, Texas and Andrea and Michael McFadden of Chapin, SC, and two adored granddaughters Elizabeth and Emily McFadden, also of Chapin.

Funeral Services will be conducted at the First Baptist Church of Wagener on Thursday, January 6 at 3:00 p.m. by the Reverend Dave Robinson, with interment to follow at Perry Baptist Church Cemetery, Perry, SC. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, January 5th at the Wagener Chapel of Blizzard Funeral Home, 163 South Main St, Wagener (803) 564-5333 .

Serving as active pallbearers are Martin Brodie of Atlanta, GA, Wade Brodie of Aiken, Michael McFadden of Chapin, John Ricci of Snellville, GA, Charles Lorick and Franklin Shealy of Columbia, Sam Smith of Wagener, and Roy Walker of Gaston. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Archie Blanks and Wayne Edwards of Columbia, Doug Busbee, Jim Ferrara and Herb Terry of Wagener.

Effie Stewart

COLUMBIA — Services for Effie Campbell Stewart, 89, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at 101 Country Club Drive, Columbia following the service. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Columbia, Shandon United Methodist Church, or the Boy Scouts of America Indian Waters Council. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mrs. Stewart, wife of the late Heath M. Stewart, Sr., died Tuesday, January 18, 2005. Born in Patrick, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Thomas Preston and Susan Penn Campbell. She was a legal secretary with Internal Revenue Service and a member of First Baptist Church of Columbia and The Thursday Book Club.

Surviving are her children, Shirley Stewart Townsend and her husband, Scott Townsend of Atlanta, Ga., Pamela A. Stewart of Columbia, and Dr. Heath M. Stewart, Jr. and his wife, Kit Stewart of Columbia; grandchildren, Heather Leigh Townsend of Atlanta, Ga., Heath M. Stewart, III of Columbia, Mary McDonald Stewart of Columbia, and Marcus Campbell Stewart of Columbia; nephews, The Honorable William C. Campbell of Beaufort, and Robert F. Alexander of Albany, N.Y.

Mary Temple

COLUMBIA — A memorial service for Mrs. Mary Ann Rachal Temple mother and homemaker, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m., January 22, 2005, at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, Aiken, SC, with the Father Leon Mozeliak officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, January 20, 2005, from 4 to 7 p.m. at 4816 Shadow Lawn Road, Columbia, SC.

Mrs. Temple, 59, of Columbia, SC, died Tuesday afternoon, January 18, 2005. Born in Charleston, WV, the daughter of the late Ernest Albert and Sula Conn Rachal of Aiken, SC, Mrs. Temple had been a resident of Columbia, SC, for the last thirty years. A mother and homemaker, Mrs. Temple devoted her time to Timmerman School by serving as PTA President and in other capacities. She attended St. John’s Episcopal Church, Congaree, SC and was a member of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, Aiken, SC.

Mrs. Temple is survived by her husband, Ronald Wayne Temple, Sr., a daughter, Ryan Temple Richardson, and a son, Ronald Wayne Temple, Jr., all of Columbia, SC; brother, Butch Rachal and sister-in-law, Lynne Rachal of Washington , DC; and her special attending-friend, Christeen Hagood of Columbia, S.C.

Memorials may be made to Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Linnie Wise

COATS, N.C. — Mrs. Linnie Smith Wise, age 99, of 246 Skeet Range Road, died Wednesday in Britthaven of Harnett. Memorial services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday January 22, 2005, at Washington Street United Methodist Church Christ Chapel in Columbia, SC. Officiating will be Rev. Mike Alexander.

Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Franklin Smith and the late Elizabeth Spearman Smith. She was a member of Washington Street United Methodist Church in Columbia, S.C., for many years. She had served as a leader of the United Methodist Woman and the William Capers Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Lake Murray Boating and Sports Club and a member of The Woman’s Club of Columbia where she had served as president and chairman of the board of trustees. Also, she was a member of the Columbia Metro Lioness Club and Sasanqua Garden Club.

Surviving are one son, Tom Wise of Coats, NC; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Washington Street United Methodist Church 1401 Washington Street, Columbia, SC 29201 or to The Carolina Children’s Home in Columbia, SC.

Lois All

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Lois Sharp All, 86, died January 14, 2005, in Jacksonville, FL. Her husband, Frank E. All, M.D., and daughter, Kathleen Sinclair preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughters, Fran Calhoun, Nancy Jane Urban, and MaryPat Deeb, 8 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. She grew up in Allendale, S.C., attended Columbia College in Columbia, S.C., and moved to Tallahassee with her family following WWII. Mrs. All was a past-president of the Capital Medical Auxiliary, and a member of the Tallahassee Garden Club and Trinity Methodist Church. She will be remembered for her love of flowers, birds and family.

A memorial service will be held in Tallahassee in the spring.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Tallahassee Garden Club, 507 N. Calhoun Street, Tallahassee, FL 32301.
