St. Julian Rivers

RIDGELAND — Services for St. Julian Guess Rivers, 86, former editor and publisher of the Jasper County News, widow of D.N. Rivers Sr., are 2 p.m. today at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church; burial: Varnville Cemetery, Varnville. Sauls Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Allendale to Julian and Maude Walker Guess, she died October 30, 2004. Surviving: children, Delmar Rivers Jr., Josie Hurt; four grandchildren.

Mavis Johnson

CAMDEN — Graveside services for Mavis “Polly” Wallace Johnson, 70, of Camden will be held Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at 2:00 PM in Sandy Grove United Methodist Church. Rev. Larry Brown will officiate. The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 2, 2004 from 6:00-7:30 PM in Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made to Sandy Grove United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 275, Bethune, SC 29009.

Mrs. Johnson died Monday, November 1, 2004. Born in Jefferson, SC, she was the daughter of the late Ben and Nellie Wallace Stogner. She was a member and former secretary of Sandy Grove United Methodist Church. Mrs. Johnson was a former Director at Pinedale Residential Center.

Surviving are a daughter, Jan A. Haynes of Lugoff; a son, Fain Johnson of Camden, 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Isabelle McKnight

KINGSTREE — Services for Isabelle McKnight, 89, widow of Buster McKnight, are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Old Mt. Zion AME Church; burial in Kingstree Cemetery. Dimery & Rogers Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Williamsburg Co. to Bill and Jannie Singletary, she died Oct. 31, 2004. Surviving: sisters, Emma Williams, Lizzie Thompson; nephew, Randy; nieces, Pauline, Willie Ann, Ernestine; grandnieces & nephews.

David White

GREENPOND — Services for David White, 75, noon Wednesday at Grover Memorial Baptist Church, Hendersonville; burial: Zola Cemetery, Whitehall; viewing 1-8 p.m. today at Young Funeral Home, Yemassee. Born in Colleton Co. to Jerry & Della Murray- Washington , he died Oct. 28, 2004. Surviving: wife, Hattie Admore-White; children, Andrew, Kenneth, Nell, Margaret, Rose, Barbara, Katherine.

Harry McAllister

GREAT FALLS — Services for Harry Alexander McAllister, 81, widower of Dorothy McElveen McAllister, 2 p.m. Thursday (visitation 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday) at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home; military honors burial: Greenlawn Cemetery. Born in Providence, N.C., to Joseph and Mary McAllister, he died Oct. 31, 2004. Surviving: daughter, Sue Morris; grands; greats, great-great-grand; sister, Rev. Jettie Helms.

Daniel Seay

LEXINGTON — Services for Daniel Wilbur Seay, 74, will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Barr-Price Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Burial will follow in Pisgah Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Memorials to one’s choice.

Mr. Seay died Monday November 1, 2004.

Born in Lexington County a son of the late Wilbur Thomas and Eva Corley Seay. He was a retired carpenter. He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Surviving are sons, Leon Seay of Columbia, Darr Seay of Gaston; daughters, Harriet (Beth) Gunter, Julie Senn and Jane Crowell all of Leesville; sisters, Ella-Beth Richardson of Lexington; grandchildren, Jennifer and Benjamin Crowell and Noel Seay. 10 step grandchildren and several step-great grandchildren. Two special cousins Annie Frick Richardson and Leon Frick. Special thanks to Ports Bridge Hospice.

Effie Sistare

LANCASTER — Services for Effie T. Sistare, 82, widow of Ned Sistare, 2 p.m. Thursday at Bethlehem Baptist Church; visitation 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Mahaffey Funeral Home. Born in Hartsville to Charlie and Byrdanna Thompson, she died Nov. 1, 2004. Surviving: children, Kenneth Sistare, Lavilla Faulkenberry, Judy Willis; siblings, Helen Hughes, Arthur, Harold, Lawrence Thompson, James Funderburk.

Bennie Tuten Sr.

EFFINGHAM — Mr. Bennie Hugh Tuten, Sr., 55, of 2209 East Effingham Hwy., died Sunday evening at his residence after a brief illness.

Born Dec. 19, 1948 in Hampton County, SC, he was the son of the late James Tuten and Stacia Wilson Tuten. He had retired as an agent with the Bankers Life Insurance Company.

He is survived by his wife: Bonnie Anderson Tuten; one son: Bennie Hugh Tuten, Jr. of Florence; 2 daughters: Nancy Lynn Carter of Florence and Brandy Smith of Statesboro, GA; 1 step daughter: Candy Stastny of Statesboro, GA. There are 2 grandchildren and 2 step grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 PM in the chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton. Burial will follow in the Hickory Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call at the chapel in Hampton on Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 PM and until the hour of services on Wednesday.

Thelma Taylor

MT. CROGHAN — Services for Thelma Summerford Taylor, 88, widow of Harley Taylor, 4 p.m. today at Center Grove Baptist Church; visitation 2:30-4 p.m. prior at the church. Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield, is in charge. Born in Mt. Croghan to Kember and Julia Summerford, she died Nov. 1, 2004. Surviving: children, Jerry, H.L. Taylor, Kay Gulledge, June Bailey; 11 grands; 16 great-grandchildren.

Henry Young

LAURENS — Services with burial for Henry “Good Buddy” Young, 69, will be held at 3 p.m. today at Mt. Vernon AME Church, where he was a member. The family is at 212 Caroline St., Laurens. Goins Funeral Home is in charge. Mr. Young died October 29, 2004. Surviving: aunt, Evelyn Rogers; uncle, Willie Hunter; great aunt, Alberta McGraey. He was the last survivor of his immediate family.

Carolyn Sawyer

COLUMBIA — Service for Carolyn Geneva Ard Sawyer, 65, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at The First Church of the Nazarene with burial in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens. Mrs. Sawyer will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Memorials may be made to The First Church of the Nazarene, 3120 Kay St., Columbia, S.C. 29210. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mrs. Sawyer died Sunday, October 31, 2004. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Troy D. and Opal Collins Ard. Formerly employed with Capitol City Manufacturing Company and Kut Rate Fashions, she retired from Ole Towne Antique Mall.

Mrs. Sawyer was a member of The First Church of the Nazarene where she worked in the nursery.

Surviving are her husband, Frank D. Sawyer; sons, Tony Collins and Terry Collins, both of Lexington; sons and daughters-in-law, Ray and Jan Sawyer of Raynham, Mass. and Roger and Mary Beth Sawyer of Columbia; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Diane Ard of Scranton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Louise A. and Bob Frey of Anaheim, Calif., Gertie A. and Jerry Barnhill of Marion and Dottie A. and Dale Collins of Mullins; and grandchildren, Joshua Collins, Andy Collins and Karen Collins. She was predeceased by brothers, Joseph D. Ard and Jake K. Ard and sister, Sue A. Creel.

Donna Poole

TRAVELERS REST — Services for Donna Marie Coggins Poole, 43, 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at The Howze Mortuary with burial in Grand View Memorial Gardens. Born in Greenville Co. to Jessie and Georgia Darnell Coggins, she died Oct. 30, 2004. Surviving are husband, John; sons, James, Justin, Jeremy Gosnell; siblings, Barbara Banks, Clarence, Jonathan Williams, Michael Coggins; stepsons, Joseph, Jacob Poole.

William Turner Sr.

AIKEN — Memorial service for William Maybin Turner Sr., WWII veteran, widower of Laura Cook Turner, 2 p.m. Thursday (visitation 7-9 p.m. Wednesday) at Hatcher Funeral Home, Langley. Born in Spartanburg to Otis and Willie Lee Turner, he died Oct. 25, 2004. Surviving are children, Laura Hodges, Linda Logan, Kim Cagle, Ross, William Jr. Turner; brothers, Gerald, Joe; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Clark Mixson

VARNVILLE — Mr. Leroy Clark Mixson, 82, the husband of Mary Etta Tuten Mixson, and formerly of Varnville, died early Sunday morning in the Bayview Nursing Center in Beaufort.

Born June 23, 1922, in Hampton County, he was the son of the late Roy Mixson and Tabitha Mixson. He was a veteran of World War II, having received the Purple Heart, was a member of the American Legion Post 108 and had retired from the Civil Service at Paris Island Marine Depot. He was President of the Resident Council at Bayview Nursing Home and was a member of Sand Hill Baptist Church.

He is survived by 2 sons: Russell Mixson and wife Carol of Hampton, SC, Don Mixson and wife Lorraine of Brunson, SC; 3 daughters: Connie Stevenson and husband Don of Apollo Beach, FL, Sharon Platts of Brunson, SC and Terri Skinner and husband Donald of Rincon, GA. There are nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by 3 brothers: Ellis, J.W. and Ben.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 AM in the Sand Hill Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Glen Samples and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton. Burial will follow in the Sand Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 until 8 PM this evening and prior to 10 AM on Tuesday when the casket will be placed in the church.

Memorials may be made to: Sand Hill Baptist Church or Sand Hill Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 15480 Pocotaligo Rd., Varnville, SC 29944.

Carolyn Sayers

COLUMBIA. — Graveside service for Elizabeth Carolyn Sayers, 84, will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mrs. Sayers, wife of the late John G. Sayers, Jr., died Saturday, October 30, 2004. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late William Thomas Sloan and Lula Brooks Johnston. She retired from the federal government.

Mrs. Sayers was known for her love of the Lord. She loved music and the theater and for years volunteered at the Town Theater.

Surviving are daughter, Dr. Marta Carolyn Sayers of Roanoke; son, Rob T. Sayers of Spartanburg; and two granddaugthers. She was predeceased by son, Johnny G. Sayers III and sister, Pat Eastman.

James Marshall

RICHMOND, Va. — Services for James Walter Marshall, WWII veteran, retired from Sonoco Products Co., noon Wednesday at Bliley Funeral Home; burial with military honors: Virginia Veterans Cemetery. He died Oct. 31, 2004. He was a member of Hartsville Masonic Lodge and attended USC. Surviving: wife, Mary; daughter, Kay; dog, Nikki; nieces, Kathy, Debbie, Beth, Cindy; nephews, Dr. Chris, Miller Marshall.
