WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Tegjula “Teggy” Cooper will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home with burial in Serenity Memorial Gardens. Viewing is 10 a.m.-7 tonight at the funeral home. Born in Jacksonville, Fla., to Eugene and Sandra Y. Cooper, she died Jan. 19, 2005. Surviving: fiance, Andre’ Williams; children, Darius, Samuel and Alizey’a; siblings, Willie, Tasha, Jamr and Shaylay.

Epsie Matthews

LEXINGTON — Services for Epsie C. Matthews, 85, of Lexington, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, conducted by Rev. Daniel A. Graves. Burial will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Perry Baptist Church Cemetery in Perry. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, 430 17th St. NW, Washington , DC, 20006. The family will receive friends from Noon till 1 p.m. Saturday prior to the service.

Mrs. Matthews died Thursday, January 20, 2005. Born in Aiken County, SC, she was the daughter of the late Lodrick and Annie L. Collum. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church in North, SC.

Surviving are her husband, Robert Matthews of Lexington; daughter, Beverly Yarborough of Lexington; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Linda Matthews of Lancaster; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Louis Murray

BELVEDERE — Services for Louis L. Murray, 73, 2 p.m. Monday: Pineview Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, visitation 5-7 p.m. Sunday: Rowland F.H., North Augusta. Born in Harriman, Tenn., he died Jan. 21, 2005. He had retired from retail sales, was a member of First Christian Church of Belvedere and a Korean Conflict Air Force veteran. Surviving: wife, Glenda Ervin Murray; brother, Richard Murry.

Nell Sharpe

COLUMBIA — Service for Nell Cain Sharpe, 63, will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Boyce Chapel, with burial in Blackville Cemetery, Blackville, at 2 p.m. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 1306 Hampton St., Columbia, S.C. 29202. Visitation will be Sunday 5-7 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo.

Mrs. Sharpe died Thursday, January 20, 2005. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Gordon S. and Marian Keel Cain. She attended Anderson Junior College and was a member of First Baptist Church and Bible Survey Sunday School Class.

Surviving are her husband, Robert R. Sharpe; mother-in-law, Hazel E. Sharpe of Columbia; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Tamberly Sharpe of Villa Rica, Ga., and Barry and Leslie Sharpe of Jonesborough, Tenn.; daughters, Lynn Sharpe of Florence and Kathryn Johnson and her husband, Rick, of Columbia; brother and sister-in-law, William G. and Rose Cain of Greenville; sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor C. and Dan Logan of Columbia; and grandchildren, Curtis Sharpe, Ashlyn Sharpe, Brooke Sharpe, Coleman Johnson and Clay Johnson.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to the nurses and staff of 8th Floor, Lexington Medical Center and doctors and staff of S.C. Oncology Associates.

Ann Tyler

ELGIN — Service for Ann Elizabeth Kerley Tyler, 39, will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Shandon Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Samaritan’s Purse. Visitation will be Saturday 5-7 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mrs. Tyler died Thursday, January 20, 2005. Born in Nashville, Tenn., she was a daughter of Sidney Earp Kerley and the late Horace Kerley. An honor graduate of Richland Northeast High School, she graduated summa cum laude from the USC School of Nursing. She was employed as a registered nurse at the William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute.

Mrs. Tyler was a member of Shandon Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Charles Patrick Tyler; son, Kyle Andrew Tyler, and daughters, Kirsten Elizabeth Tyler and Morgan Sweet Tyler of the home; brother and sister-in-law, the Reverend Daniel Paul and Lesa Kerley of Eustice, Fla.; sister and brother-in-law, Janet Kerley and Michael Shelley of Columbia; nephews, Joshua Kerley and Reid Kerley, and a niece, Grace Ann Shelley.

Lewis Mathis Sr.

MANNING — Services for Lewis Herbert Mathis Sr., 74, USAF veteran, retired merchant, 11 a.m. Monday (visitation 3-5 p.m. Sunday) at Stephens Funeral Home. Burial: Fellowship Cemetery. Born in Wedgefield to Lewis and Maggie Holladay Mathis, he died Jan. 20, 2005. Surviving: son, Lewis Jr.; siblings, William Mathis, Evelyn Altman, Carrie Baker, Mary Wilson; grandchildren, Wyatt, Lewis III Mathis, Danielle Bochette.

Tom Shuler

ORANGEBURG — Services for Tom Shuler, 78, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Bowman, with burial in Belleville Memorial Gardens. Glover’s Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Orangeburg Co. to Harry and Mattie Shuler, he died Jan. 17, 2005. Surviving are wife, Bernadean Berry Shuler; children, Sylvia Ratcliff, Dr. Caroletta, Antonio Shuler; grandchild, great-grandchildren; siblings.

Thomas Wells Jr.

GREENWOOD — Services for Thomas Nicholls Wells Jr., 75, are 4 p.m. Sunday (visitation 3 p.m.) at Blyth Funeral Home, burial in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Born in Greenwood Co. to Thomas Sr. and Gertrude Harper Wells, he died Jan. 20, 2005. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. Surviving: wife, Harriet G. Wells; daughter, Lisa Harrison; grandchild, Elizabeth.

Faye Rinehart

BATESBURG — Faye Morris Rinehart, 66, of 1538 Mt. Willing Road, died Friday, January 21, 2005, in Lexington Medical Center.

Born in Newberry County, and a daughter of the late Howard and Sarah Williams Morris, she was the wife of the late Kenneth Leon “Popeye” Rinehart. Mrs. Rinehart was formerly a seamstress with Old School Manufacturing of Prosperity and Knight Industries in Saluda and later was employed with Little River “Big Mans” Marina. She was a member of Nazareth United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathy R. Hutto and Sheila Price both of Batesburg, four grandchildren, Kristi Proctor, Luke Hutto, Patrick Hutto and Nichole Stone, two great-grandchildren, Drew Proctor and Zachary Proctor, a sister, Brenda Black of Prosperity.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. Sunday, January 23, 2005, at Ramey Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Monday, January 24, 2005, at Nazareth United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joyce Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Nazareth United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2943 Columbia Highway, Leesville, SC 29070.

Curtis Shell

COLUMBIA — Services for Mr. Curtis Shell, 52, will be held 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Apostolic Holiness Outreach Ministry Church with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel is in charge. Surviving are his wife, Glen Shell; daughters, Toinetta Norris, Tina (Gene) LaPointe, Carolyn Norris, April Shell, Erica Glover, and Martina (Shannon) Gidron; son, Curtis “Jr.” Glover; mother, Frances Shell; sisters, Sarah Williams, Johnnie Mae (Andrew) McFowler, Georgia Taylor, and Louise Arnold; brother, Casper (Frances) Shell and Rufus Shell; 9 grandchildren; nieces; nephews.

Mary Carnes

COLUMBIA — Mary C. Carnes, 94, died January 21, 2005, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Born December 4, 1910, in Columbia, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Thomas A. Cobb and Mary Victoria Hiller, residents of Calhoun Street in Columbia. She grew up in Columbia, attended Columbia High School, and graduated from the University of South Carolina. She was married to the late Walter Cecil Carnes, a prominent physician in Lancaster, S.C. Mrs. Carnes established and taught one of the first Special Education classes for children with disabilities in South Carolina and continued to serve as a teacher for over 16 years. Survivors include a son, W.C. (Pete) Carnes of Las Vegas, Nevada, and his wife, Paula; a daughter, Tee Carnes, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and her husband, Jack; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at Westside Cemetery in Lancaster, S.C. on Thursday, January 27 at 1 p.m. with Hartley Funeral Home handling the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the South Carolina Association of Retarded Citizens (The ARC of South Carolina, P.O. Box 8707, Columbia, S.C.).

Jerry Whitehead

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Jerry Franklin Whitehead, 62, of West Columbia, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 23, 2005, at Holland Avenue Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Charles M. Wilson. Burial, with Masonic Rites, will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Chris Ruff, Lavern Norris, Jimmy Watford, Kirk Whitehead, Ben Whitehead, Donnie Driggers, Charlie Taylor, Mark Whitehead and Scott Waters. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Holland Avenue Baptist Church Building Fund.

Mr. Whitehead died Friday, January 21, 2005. Born in Russellville, AL, he was a son of the late John Franklin and Ila Mae McCluskey Whitehead. Mr. Whitehead was a member of Holland Avenue Baptist Church and the Sinclair Masonic Lodge. He had retired as an electrician for the University of South Carolina, and was a loyal Gamecock fan. Mr. Whitehead was an avid Cubs baseball fan and enjoyed collecting baseball cards. But his greatest pleasure was in collecting and listening to his Elvis music collection and memorabilia.

Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Katherine Whitehead of Burbank, CA, Mark and Stacey Whitehead of West Columbia; brothers, Bobby Whitehead of Lexington, Don Whitehead of Blythewood; and granddaughter, Rachel Whitehead.

Mr. Whitehead was predeceased by his stepmother, Nell Korda; grandparents, Albert and Lelia McCluskey, and Thomas and Annie Whitehead.

Mr. Whitehead was a terrific father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who were honored to know him.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Carla and the staff at Heartland of Lexington Nursing & Rehab, as well as to the staff at Portsbridge Hospice.
