Funeral services for Robert Carroll Newsome, 86, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 2, 2006 at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The family will deliver a eulogy with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 1, 2006 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Newsome died Sunday, January 29, 2006. Born in Darlington County, SC, he was a son of the late Dutt and Penny Kervin Newsome. He was a member of Heights Baptist Church, Beech Island, SC. He was a Veteran of WWII, serving in the United States Navy. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, and was retired from DuPont. Surviving are his wife, Marie Moody Newsome of Beech Island, SC; son and daughter-in-law, Richard Leon and Katherine Newsome of Jackson, SC; sister, Hattie Newsome Stewart of Beech Island, SC; brother and sister-in-law, Hugh and Margaret Newsome of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Steven Newsome, Kimberly Mace, Kelly Dobson; 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Rex Newsome, Leslie Newsome, Don Newsome; sister, Penny Newsome Flemming.

Carson Luther

September 2nd, 1905 - January 28th, 2006

Mr. William Carson Luther, Sr. was born September 2, 1905 in Moore County, NC to Alice Dunlap Luther and Thomas Alexander Luther. The family moved to Hartsville, SC where his father was in the lumber business. After graduating from school, Mr. Luther went to work for a local pharmacy. He enjoyed the challenges and responsibilities at the local pharmacy so much that he went back to school and became a registered and licensed pharmacist. Mr. Luther went to work for the Parke-Davis Company as a national retail representative in 1927 and traveled the country introducing the new miracle drugs such as penicillin and polio vaccines to the medical community. Mr. Luther married Ruby Eva Pennington of Hartsville, SC on December 23, 1935. They moved to Atlanta, GA for two years and then settled in Macon, GA where they raised their family. Mr. Luther worked for the Parke-Davis Company for forty-five years and earned his pharmacy licenses in South Carolina and Georgia. After retirement in 1970, he worked as a staff pharmacist at the Middle Georgia Hospital and assisted local pharmacies around town. He regularly attended pharmaceutical meetings and continuing education programs around the state of Georgia and maintained his license to practice pharmacy until the age of 96. Mr. Luther was a member of the First Baptist Church of Christ in Macon, GA, the forty-ninth president of the Baraca Sunday School class and a past deacon of the Church. He was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club, the Macon Touchdown Club, the Macon Middle Georgia Pharmaceutical Association, the Grand Jury Association and did volunteer work at various charities around town. He served every year as a Salvation Army Christmas kettle bell ringer until the age of 98. The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Ancient Free Masons of South Carolina awarded Mr. Luther the title of Sublime Degree of Master Mason for his sixty years of faithful service to Masonry. He also participated in the National Health Institute centenarian study program as a way to help and understand the needs of fellow centenarians. Survivors include: Son, William Carson Luther, Jr. and wife, Louise, of Atlanta, GA; Daughter, Penny Luther Hewett and husband, Ron, of Charlotte, NC; Grandchildren, William Carson Luther III of Atlanta, GA, Ronald Winston Hewett, Jr. and wife Kim, of Nashville, TN, Ashley Hewett Potter and husband Freddy, and Laura Pennington Hewett, all of Charlotte, NC; Great-grandchildren, Carson Elizabeth Hewett, Winston Hewett, Trevey Hewett, all of Nashville, TN, Madison Potter and Grayson Potter, both of Charlotte, NC; Sisters, Marjorie Luther Harley of Columbia, SC, Mary Luther Hudson of Salisbury, NC, Lilly Mae Luther Smith of Sumter, SC, and Kate Luther Funkhouser of Bethesda, MD. He was predeceased by his wife of forty-nine years, Ruby Pennington Luther; brothers, Walton Luther, Charles Luther, Russell Luther, all of Hartsville, SC, and sister, Bessie Rogers of Sumter, SC. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 4, 2006 at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Magnolia Cemetery. Dr. Jennings Ligon Duncan III, Senior Minister of the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, MS and beloved nephew of Mr. Luther will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Renovation Fund at First Baptist Church of Christ, 511 High Place, Macon, GA 31201.

Vadie Blackwell

April 14th, 1918 - January 29th, 2006

Funeral services for Vadie Johnson Blackwell, 87, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at the Clyde Church of God. The Revs. I. J. Strickland and Don Childers will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Monday, January 30, 2006 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Blackwell, widow of William Denny Blackwell, died Sunday, January 29, 2006. Born in Darlington Co., SC, she was a daughter of the late Boyd and Essie Henderson Johnson. She was a member of the Clyde Church of God. Surviving are her sister, Mary Lee Tidwell of Bethune, SC; brother, Rev. Bill Johnson of Hartsville, SC; nephew and spouse, James "Pee Wee" and Diane Johnson of Hartsville, SC. She was predeceased by her sisters, Ella Mae Munn; brothers, J. C. Johnson, Fred Johnson, Mortimon Johnson, Liston Johnson; stepson, Gene Blackwell.

Ella Mae Gladden

June 10th, 1919 - March 25th, 2005

Red Hill, SC. Funeral services for Ella Mae Huggins Gladden, 85, will be held at 4:00 p.m. Monday, March 28, 2005 at Red Hill Baptist Church. The Revs. Buddy Amerson and William Lewis will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Sunday, March 27, 2005 from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Darlington County Rescue Squad Mrs. Gladden, widow of George Heyward Gladden, died Friday, March 25, 2005. Born in Lamar, SC, she was a daughter of the late Rochel and Lucy Brown Huggins. She was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Loran and Judy Gladden of Rembert, SC; daughters, Bonnie McCoy of Hartsville, SC, Geraldine Bransford of Bishopville, SC; sisters, Vivian Gladden of Rembert, SC, Alice Braddock of Hartsville, SC; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, George B. "Tut" Gladden.

Geneva King

February 15th, 1915 - March 24th, 2005

Funeral services for Geneva Boan King, 90, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 27, 2005 at Gum Branch Baptist Church. The Rev. Jeff Gardner will officiate with burial in Union United Methodist Church Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Saturday, March 26, 2005 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Gum Branch Baptist Church, 1504 Clyde Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550. Mrs. King, widow of John C. King, died Friday, March 25, 2005. Born in Chesterfield Co., SC, she was a daughter of the late John W. and Fannie Corbett Boan. She was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church and was retired from Hartsville Manufacturing with 30 years of service. She spent her retirement years teaching Sunday school and helping the shut-ins and the elderly. Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Rita King of Hartsville, SC, Richard King of Hartsville, SC, Thomas and Jean King of Moncks Corner, SC, Audrey King of Hunterville, NC; daughters and son-in-law, Loretta and Charles Overcast of Hazel, KY, Mildred Corley of Redlands, CA; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded by her son, Johnny King, and her daughter, Lula Mae Thompson.

Kenneth Jones

November 9th, 1930 - March 20th, 2005

Graveside services for Kenneth Wilson Jones, 74, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at the Bethune Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Jeff Cockrell will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 22, 2005 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the residence. Mr. Jones died Sunday, March 20, 2005. Born in Bethune, SC, he was a son of the late Carroll and Ethel Munn Jones. He was co-owner and operator of Piggy Wiggly of Bethune. He attended Bethune Baptist Church and served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Surviving are his wife, Judy Anderson Jones of Bethune, SC; sons and daughters-in-law, Kent and Amy Jones of Dublin, CA, Eric and Selena Jones of Bethune, SC, Phil and Callie Jones of Mullins, SC; sister, Irene Bass of Bethune, SC; brother, Delton Jones of Bethune, SC; grandchildren, Erin Jones, Beth Pate, Megan Pate, Paige Jones, Scarlett Jones, Sawyer Jones, Jordan Smith, Emily Grace Jones.

Norah Mathison

March 22nd, 1913 - March 19th, 2005

Mass of Christian Burial for Norah Mary O'Regan Mathison, 91, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at St Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. Father Karl Roesch will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge.

Gene Bass

Born in Darlington Co., SC, he was a son of the late James Edward and Alene Chapman Bass. He was retired from Daniels Construction. Surviving are his wife, Sadie Bass of Hartsville, SC; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald E. and Susan Bass of Hartsville, SC; daughters and sons-in-law, Doris and Butch McKenzie of Lugoff, SC, Ann and David Partin of Burlington, NC; sister, Patsy B. Newsome of Newport, TN; brother, James Edward Bass, Jr. of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Kristi Reynolds, Jennifer Newbold, Dr. Sydney Primis, William Bass, Daniel Bass; 7 great-grandchildren.

Willie Manship

February 21st, 1914 - February 6th, 2005

Mrs. Manship, widow of Harvey Manship, died Sunday, February 6, 2005. Born in Lee Co., SC, she was a daughter of the late Wylie Alton and Edgie Weatherly Mozingo. She was a charter member of West Hartsville Baptist Church and was a member of the Lucile Williams Sunday School class. She was a loving wife of 49 years, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She ministered to friends, neighbors and those in need. Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Bob Whitted, Wanda Gilbert, Nora Lee and Tommy Copeland, Ann and Glenn Traweek, all of Hartsville, SC; a grandson who was like a son and his spouse, Jim and Sue Smith of Hartsville, SC; sister, Mary Ellen Copeland of Charleston, SC; brothers, W. A. Mozingo of Bishopville, SC, Sidney Mozingo of Sumter, SC; grandchildren, Renee Loflin, Rhonda Brown, Christel Copeland, Charles "Chuck" Traweek, Sharon Hudson; 9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Tom Copeland and Joni Hodge. The family appreciates the love and tender care given to their mother during her days of illness.

Rock Truett

January 12th, 1927 - February 4th, 2005

Funeral services for T. E. “Rock” Truett, Jr., 78, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 7, 2005 at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dr. Jeri Parris Perkins will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Sunday, February 6, 2005 from 3-5 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 213 West Home Avenue, Hartsville, SC 29550 or American Heart Association BTC 009, 181 East Evans St. Suite 206, Florence, SC 29506. Mr. Truett died Friday, February 4, 2005. Born in Florence Co., SC, he was a son of the late T. E. Truett, Sr. and the late Mildred Graham Truett Hughes. Following his 1944 graduation from Hartsville High School, he entered the Army. He completed basic training in Florida, was stationed in Germany and France for two years and discharged as a sergeant. Upon his return to the states he attended Wake Forest University and was graduated from Coker College in 1951 with a BS in biology. He was employed by the Coker Pedigreed Seed Company in Hartsville, International Minerals and Chemical Company as plant manager and retired as an employee of the State of South Carolina. Mr. Truett was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir for many years. He was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173 and a lifetime member of the VFW. Surviving are his wife, Jane Woodward Truett of Hartsville, SC; sons and daughters-in-law, T. E. "Stoney" and Valerie Anderson Truett, III of Cayce, SC, Leslie Woodward "Chip" and Jill Reh Truett of Lexington, SC; daughter, Theresa Truett of Hartsville, SC; grandson, Tom Truett of Lexington, SC.

Aurelia Huggins

September 6th, 1914 - February 1st, 2005

Funeral services for Aurelia Gainey Huggins, 90, will be held at 2:00 p.m.. Thursday, February 3, 2005 at the First Baptist Church Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Robert Cline will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5 - 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 East Home Ave., Hartsville SC 29550. Mrs. Huggins, widow of Woodrow Huggins, died Tuesday, February 1, 2005. Born in Darlington County, SC, she was a daughter of the late P. M. and Mattie Webb Gainey. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and was previously involved in the Junior Dept., Morning Missions Circle and the Golden Fellowship. She was retired from Economy Drug and was a member of the American Legion Auxillary. Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Elaine Huggins of Andalusia, AL; Kenneth and Ruth Huggins of Hartsville, SC, grandchildren, Maria McTighe, Tony Huggins, Mandy King, Woody Huggins; six great grandchildren.

Ed Thornton

May 1st, 1933 - January 30th, 2005

Funeral services for Edgar Eugene Thornton, Jr., 71, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 1, 2005 at Wayside Baptist Church. The Revs. Billy Campbell and William Taylor will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Monday, January 31, 2005 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Thornton died Sunday, January 30, 2005. Born in Magnolia, MS, he was a son of the late Edgar Eugene and Rosa Spencer Thornton. He was a member of Wayside Baptist Church. He served in the U. S. Air Force, played the steel guitar with the Country Stallions and was a member of the Moose Lodge. He previously worked for Dan River Mills in Virginia and retired from the Hartsville Police Department as a detective. Surviving are his wife, Grace Hawkins Thornton of Hartsville, SC; brother, Jerry Lee Thornton of Baton Rouge, LA; uncles and aunts, Robert and Frankie Spencer, Jimmy and Linda Spencer, H. P. Dykes, all of Magnolia, MS.
