HEATH SPRINGS — Services for Jeffery Lee “Country” Bowers, 42, are 1 p.m. Tuesday at Fellowship Bible Church, where he was a member, with burial in New Hope Baptist Church. Visitation is 5-7 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home, Lancaster. Born in Lancaster to Herman and Shelvy Bowers, he died Jan. 22, 2005. Surviving are wife, Judy Nunnery Bowers; father; daughter, Michaela Bowers; others.

Lurline Frierson

KINGSTREE — Services with burial for Lurline Pressley Frierson, 76, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Antioch Baptist Church. Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home is in charge. Born to Lawrence and Alice Williams Pressley, she died Jan. 24, 2005. Surviving are husband, Willie Frierson; son, Pernell Frierson; sisters, Mary Gray, Flora Cooper, Louise McFadden; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; others.

Jerry Martin

LEXINGTON — Services for Gerald Leo “Jerry” Martin, 43, of Lexington, will be held at 2pm Tuesday, January 25, 2005, in Red Bank Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Astor L. Jacobs, Jr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Monday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Mr. Martin died Saturday, January 22, 2005. Born in Columbia, he was the son of Betty Polston Mathias and the late Arthur Leo Martin. A lifetime area resident, Mr. Martin attended Red Bank Baptist Church and was a former employee of Nu-Way Industrial Services.

Surviving, in addition to his mother of Lexington, are his wife, Linda Jeffcoat Martin of Lexington; sons, Jeremy E. Martin and Kyle L. Martin, both of the home; sisters, Sissy Rabon of Lexington, Peggy Wooten of Edmund, Lisa Dempsey of Orangeburg; brothers, Dwain Mathias of Lexington, and Tommy Martin of Pelion. He was preceded in death by his father, Carl “Larry” Mathias.

Effie Williams

NEESES — Effie Mae Williams, 82, of Neeses, died Sunday, January 23, 2005.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at Beaver Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Pete Robertson and Rev. Billy Hughes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.

Mrs. Williams was born in Orangeburg County, a daughter of the late William and Cora Baltzegar Chavis. She was a member of Beaver Creek Baptist Church. She was predeceased by a son, Lester J. Williams.

Survivors include her husband, James L. Williams, of the home; six grandchildren, James Williams of Springfield, Lester “Bubba” Williams, Jr. of Charleston, Frances Carr of Columbia, Lynn Williams of Neeses, Wade Williams of Ohio, Glenn Williams of Lakeland, CA; a sister, Ola Curreton of Lexington; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m., Monday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North and other times at the home, 447 Fire Tower Road, Neeses.

Marian Bussey

GRANITEVILLE — Services for Marian Randall Bussey, widow of Henry Bussey, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday (visitation 7-9 tonight) at Napier Funeral Home with burial in Pineview Memorial Gardens, North Augusta. Born to Claude and Allie Franklin Randall, she died Jan. 23, 2005. Surviving are children, Julienne Orr, Janice Howell, Anne Dean, Randall Bussey; brothers, James, Herbert Randall; six grandchildren.

Annie Nunn

EASTOVER — Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Bell Addison Nunn, 84, widow of John G. Nunn, Sr.; of Eastover, SC will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at McLeod United Methodist Church with interment to follow in Eason Memorial Baptist Church in Eastover, SC. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Greenlawn Funeral Home is in charge.

Mrs. Nunn died Saturday, January 22, 2005. Born in Eastover, SC, she was the daughter of the late M.R. Addison, Sr. and Lillie E. Addison. She was co-owner of Nunn’s Grocery Store. Mrs. Nunn was a member of McLeod United Methodist Church. She was predeceased by a son, Harry Jerome Nunn, a sister, Velma Craven and a brother, Jack D. Addison.

Surviving are her daughters, Sandra A. Nunn Thrift and her husband Richard and Norma Spivey and her husband Olin both of Eastover, SC, Frances K. Bonham of Charlotte, NC; sons, John Gregory Nunn Jr. and his wife Madelene and Robert Wayne Nunn both of Eastover, SC, Marion Kirk Nunn and his wife Judy of Houston, TX; sister, Minnie Rye of Eastover, SC; brother, M.R. Addison of Gadsden, SC; 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Mattie Wilson

GREELEYVILLE — Services with burial for Mattie Lou Anderson Wilson, 75, widow of Ernest Wilson, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, where she was a member, missionary and choir member. Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Greeleyville to Alex and Francis Oliver Anderson, she died Jan. 20, 2005. Surviving: sister, Virginia Williams; 8 nieces; 5 nephews; others.

Bridget Dean

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Bridget Ann Dean, 48, of Chattanooga, TN, died Friday, January 21, 2005. Survivors: son, Christopher Dean, daughter, Casey Dean, both of Panama City, FL, parents, Charles M. and Ruth I. Wynn - Columbia, SC, sisters, Carol D. Rhodes - Charlotte, NC, and Laura R. Scudder - Columbia, SC, niece, Hayden R. Scudder - Columbia, SC. Funeral Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Bridget Dean Memorial Fund c/o Turner Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37404.

John Bryant

BEAUFORT — A memorial service for John Philip “Phil” Bryant, 51, avid NASCAR fan, member Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Church, is 10 a.m. today at Anderson Funeral Home. Born in Anderson to Rev. John and Lenora Caldwell Bryant, he died Jan. 21, 2005. Surviving: wife, Jacquelyn Rausch Bryant; daughters, Megan Summers, Kathleen Bryant; brother, Bruce Bryant; sister, Lisa Mason; nieces, nephews.

Lannie Mae Davis

LAMAR — Services for Lannie Mae Davis, 79, widow of Clyde Davis Sr., were Jan. 24, 2005, at Sandy Grove United Methodist Church with burial in Johns Wesley United Methodist Church Cemetery. Hines Funeral Home was in charge. She was born in Timmonsville to Sidney and Estelle Williams. Surviving: children, Marion, Clyde Jr., Charles, Sara, Clarice, Marvis, Alyne; 1 brother; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren.

Annie Duncan

COLUMBIA — Homegoing services with burial for Annie B. Duncan will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, College Place, where she was a member. Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Orangeburg to David and Emma Baxter, she died Jan. 21, 2005. She retired from State Park Health Center. Surviving are son, Stanley Lyles; sister, Jessie Mae Jacobs; nephews and nieces.

Robert Engelke

RUFFIN — Services for Robert Fred Engelke, 46, are 11 a.m. Wednesday at New Life UM Church. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Walterboro. Born in Chicago, Ill., to Norbert and Shirley Nicholson Engelke, he died Jan. 22, 2005. Surviving: wife, Cynthia Boss Engelke; mother; children, Brett, Jessica, Timothy, Scott, Melissa, Nicholas, Alexis, Kelly; sister; 2 grandchildren.

William Clifton Sr.

ALLENDALE — Mr. William Doyle Clifton Sr., husband of Nickie Clifton, died Sunday afternoon. He was 80.

Mr. Clifton was born in Allendale County on October 20, 1924, the son of the late Albert Benjamin “Buck” and Maude Murdaugh Clifton. He was a member and deacon of The First Baptist Church of Allendale. He was a WW II Navy veteran and had served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters and was a member of the Destroyer Escort Sailor’s Association. He retired from DuPont at Savannah River Plant after 33 years of service.

Surviving besides his wife are 1 son: William Doyle Clifton Jr. and wife Doris of Beaufort. 1 daughter: Nancy Clifton Jarrell and husband Billy Jarrell of Hampton. 4 grandsons: Lee Tackett, Bucky and Seth Jarrell, William “Will” Doyle Clifton III and wife Caroline. 1 granddaughter: Tammy Ledford and husband Jeff and 1 great-granddaughter Raegan Grace Ledford.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Allendale, officiated by Rev. Jay Kieve, with burial following in Swallow Savannah cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Allendale. Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Nancy Bates

GREENWOOD — Nancy Gilder Coleman Wallace Bates, 82, resident of 523 East Creswell Avenue, wife of Dr. Phillips L. Bates, died January 23, 2005 at her home.

Born in Greenwood County, February 24, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Leland Abney and Evelyn VeRelle Coleman. She was a graduate of Lander College and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Bates was predeceased by her first husband, Richard Harris Wallace, an infant daughter, Betty Braxton Wallace and a brother, Leland Abney Coleman, Jr.

Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard Harris Wallace, Jr. and Rebecca Wallace of Columbia, Abney Coleman Wallace and Susan Wallace of Greenwood; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Gilder Wallace Cantrell and Joe Cantrell of Greenwood; a sister, Lucie Elizabeth Coleman Lumley of Greenwood; two stepdaughters, Susan Bates Rebillet and Sally Bates McWilliam; eight grandchildren, Richard Harris Wallace, III, Jane Abney Wallace Durham, Susan Wallace Haws, Lee Cantrell Rains, Abney Coleman Wallace, Jr., William Harris Smith, Joseph Brandt Wallace and Andrew Gilder Wallace; five stepgrandchildren, Austin Thornton, Marc Rebillet, Reece McWilliams, Phillips McWilliams and Andrew McWilliams; seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Bethlehem Cemetery, Coronaca with Dr. David Mayo and The Reverend Peter Hawes officiating.

The body is at Blyth Funeral Home.

The family is at the home on East Creswell Avenue.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646.
