BENNETTSVILLE — Services for Lucille Herring Aldrich, 87, widow of Ralph Aldrich Sr., are 2 p.m. today in Sunset Memorial Park. Whitner-Evans Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Marlboro Co. to Lewis Durwood and Ruby Atkins Herring, she died Jan. 30, 2005. Surviving are children, Ralph Eldrich, Mary Bailey; sisters, Elsie Townsend, Sarah Wilcox; grandsons, Ralph III, Michael; great-grandchildren, Mollie, Sarah.

Adelle Box

ORANGEBURG — Adelle Kizer Box, 98, of The Methodist Oaks, Orangeburg, and former resident of Folly Beach died Monday January 31, 2005, in The Regional Medical Center, Orangeburg, after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, February 3, 2005, at Bryant Funeral Home Chapel in St. George with Chaplain Kermit Shrawder of The Methodist Oaks. Burial will follow in St. George Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Hutto, Huey Kizer, Todd Rogers, Steve McMillan, Don Kizer, Jeff Newmann, Bryan Kirby, and David Rumble.

Adelle Whetsell Kizer was born August 2, 1906, in St. George, a daughter of the late John Samuel Kizer and Mary C. Whetsell Kizer. She was a graduate of St. George High School and a former school teacher. A member of Folly Beach United Methodist, she was first married to late Edward Leroy Phillips and the widow of Alvin Box. She was predeceased by a sister, Emma Claire Kizer Garner and brothers, Hugh Franklin Kizer, Rembert Samuel Kizer, Hal Johnston Kizer, Joseph Cullen Kizer, James Henry Kizer and Roger William Kizer.

Surviving are a sister, Mary Frances Kizer Hutto, of Orangeburg, 10 nieces, 7 nephews and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 1599 Clifton Road, NE, Atlanta, GA 30329, or Folly Beach United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1079, Folly Beach, SC 29439.

Mary David

SURFSIDE BEACH — Mary Jane David, age 67, died Tuesday, February 1, 2005, at her home.

Born February 25, 1937, in Olanta, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Joe Wheeler and Lucille Haniford McCutcheon. Mrs. David was a homemaker and mother and was a member of the Red Hat Society. She was preceded in death by her husband John W. David, Sr.

Surviving are sons, John “Jay” Wesley David, Jr. of Surfside Beach and Abraham Bright David of Macon, GA; daughter, Allyson David Kirven of Surfside Beach; grandchildren, Brooke Ashley David and Amanda Nicole Shoemaker both of Surfside Beach; beloved friend, Brenda Roberts of Galivants Ferry; brothers, Luther McCutcheon of Lexington, SC, and James Pate; sisters, Mildred Jones of Americus, GA, Lottie Mae Skeeto and Judy Woods, both of Columbia, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Murrells Inlet, SC.

Memorials may be made to Surfside United Methodist Church Youth Dept., P.O. Box 14386, Surfside Beach, SC 29587 or the charity of one’s choice.

Thelbert Bouknight

IRMO — Funeral service for Thelbert Garnette “Dootsie” Bouknight, 83, will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Shady Grove United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday 7-9 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel. Memorials may be made to Shady Grove United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Mr. Bouknight died Monday, January 31, 2005. Born in Irmo, he was the son of the late Hebron T. and Maude Bouknight.

Mr. Bouknight was a charter member of Virginia Wingard United Methodist Church and currently a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church. He served in the United States Navy and retired as a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service.

Surviving are his wife, Maude Frances Blair Bouknight of Irmo; sons, Blair Bouknight of Irmo, Garnette Bouknight and his wife, Bonnie of Irmo, Lyle Bouknight and his wife, Susan of Laguna Niguel, Calif; daughter, Joan Porter and her husband, Alan of Irmo; brother, Preston Bouknight of Irmo; sisters, Jeanette Harrell of Irmo; Ruth McGee of Charleston, W.Va., and Zelma Prim of Columbia; nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by brothers, Rev. Felder Bauknight and Hermes Bouknight; and sister, Julia Pearl Eleazer.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Eddie Williams and his staff, Doris Fulmer, Home Health and Palmetto Hospice Staff for their love and support.

Willie Ruth Burnett

BATESBURG-LEESVILLE — Willie Ruth Burnett, 85, of Batesburg-Leesville, died Monday, January 31, 2005. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 3, 2005, at Milton Shealy Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Wittenberg Lutheran Church Cemetery with Rev. Dan Bradley officiating. Pallbearers will be Donald Smith, Gary and Greg Shealy, Gregg West, John Gettys and Philip Smith.

Mrs. Burnett was born in Saluda, SC, to the late William Brunson and Alma M. Griffith. She was a member of Leesville United Methodist Church. Her first husband was the late Lawrence M. Smith and her second husband was the late Fred T. Burnett.

She was a homemaker and loving mother.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Lawrence and Becky Smith of Batesburg; Lamar and Liz Smith of Batesburg; grandchildren, Gina McCarty, Marcia Gettys, Philip Smith, Lori West; granddaughter-in-law, Erika Smith; great-grandchildren, Mike Smith, Jr., Sarah E. and Max E. McCarty, Andrew, Marshall and Cooper Gettys; preceded in death by brothers, Andrew M., Willie W. and John E. Griffith; sister, Annie L. Bouknight; grandson, Mike Smith, Sr.

Family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 2, 2005, at Milton Shealy Funeral Home, other times at the homes of each of her sons. Memorials can be made to: Leesville United Methodist Church, c/o Building Fund, 510 E. Columbia Avenue, Leesville, SC 29070 or Faith Lutheran Church, c/o Building Fund, 113 N. Oak Street, Batesburg-Leesville, SC 29006.

Louise Duggans

WEST COLUMBIA — A memorial service for Annie Louise Hayden Duggans, 44, of West Columbia, will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, February 5, 2005, at Landmark Baptist Church with Reverend O’dell Belger officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Shives Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Duggans, widow of Marvin Terrell “Terry” Duggans, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005. Born in Columbia, S.C., she was a daughter of Helen Jackson Hayden and the late Vurdaniel Hayden.

Survivors include her mother, Helen J. Carroll of South Congaree; daughter, Christy Herrera of Lexington; brothers and sisters-in-law, Damon and Peggy Hayden of Edmund, Danny and Kim Hayden of Saluda, John and Patricia Hayden of Gaston, Patrick and Michelle O’Briant of Pelion; a sister and brother-in-law, Cornelia and Victor Sandoval of Lexington; and a sister, Melinda O’Briant of Pelion.

Annie Hicks

UNION — Mrs. Annie Ashford Hicks, age 91, of 200 Highland Drive, Union, widow of Carl E. Hicks Sr., died Sunday. Mrs. Hicks was born in Union on March 16, 1913, a daughter of the late Elliott R. Ashford and Eunice Mae Scott Ashford. Surviving are a son, Carl Errol Hicks Jr. and wife, Sammie, of Irmo; a brother, Jimmy Ashford of Greenville and a sister-in-law, with whom she made her home, Margaret Ashford of Union. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Duncan Acres United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tommy Bailey. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Duncan Acres United Methodist Church, 417 Rice Ave., Union, SC 29379.

Becky Groff

LAKE MURRAY — Mrs. Becky Groff of Lake Murray passed away on January 29, 2005, at her home following a long illness. Born Bessie Louise Evans on January 5, 1933, in Wolf Summit, WV, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Bly Bailey Evans.

She is survived by her husband of fifty-three years, Robert F. Groff, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy L. and Charles Wourms of Beavercreek, OH; sons, David R. Groff and David M. Stewart of Irmo; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Tracy Groff of Lexington; grandchildren, Danielle and Michael Wourms of Beavercreek; sisters, Wilma Jean Hoover of WV, Elizabeth Lee Gilbert of FL, Shirley Ann McIntire of SC, Alfreda Bly Jackson of OH; and brother, Donnie Ray Evans of FL.

She was preceded in death by her son, Gary R. Groff; sisters, Thelma Pearl Tucker, Mary Jean Deal and Edna Ruth Blauch; brothers, Elmer Joe and Alfred Clarence Evans.

She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother by her family and by her many friends and customers who visited at the Groff Jewelry Store. She is and will be greatly missed.

Memorial services will not be conducted here but in Canton, OH. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in her honor may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation, 2711 Middleburg Dr., Ste. 205, Columbia, SC 29204. Ruth McKay

WEST COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Ruth Roland McKay, 86, will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church with burial in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Danny Shealy, Robert Yandle, Buster Yandle, Bud Roland, Billy Freeman and Rodney May. Visitation will be held Thursday 6-8 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mrs. McKay, wife of the late E. L. “Mac” McKay Sr., died Tuesday, February 1, 2005. Born in Steadman, S.C., she was the daughter of the late D. J. Roland, Sr. and Fannie Gregory Roland.

She had retired from Pacific Mills in Olympia and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth McKay of West Columbia; son, E. L. “Pete” McKay, Jr. and his wife, Janice Smith McKay of West Columbia; four grandchildren, Penelope Baker, Russell T. McKay and his wife, Allie, Sheryl Celorier, Kimberly Seawell and her husband, Robbie; eight great-grandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild.

She was predeceased by her husband and an infant daughter; sisters, Eula Mae Yandle-Kaiser, Freda Sullivan, Hildred Shealy and Dorothy May; and a brother, D.J. Roland, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 3228, West Columbia, SC 29171.
