Stanley Ward

HAMPTON — Mr. Stanley Gordon “Punkin” Ward, 51, of Hampton, died Monday evening in the Allendale County Hospital after an extended illness.

Born Feb. 15, 1953, in Hampton County, he was the son of Franklin Ward of Hampton and the late Marilyn Altman Ward. He was a painter and member of Sandy Run Baptist Church near Hampton.

Surviving besides his father are his wife, Ethel Beach Ward of Hampton; two sons, Toby Dwayne Beach of Hampton and Jason Ward of Nixville; three brothers, James Edward Freeman of Hampton, Gerald Lee Freeman of Charleston and Johnny Ray Freeman of Ravenel; two sisters, Mary Jean Thomas of Fairfax and Sandra Marie Dyches of Hampton.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton, conducted by Rev. Paul Reid. Burial will follow in Sandy Run Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home in Hampton from 6 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday evening and until the hour of services on Thursday.

The family will be at the home of his sister, Mary Jean Thomas, 530 North Charleston Avenue, Fairfax, SC 29827.

Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, 300 Mulberry St., Hampton, SC, is in charge of arrangements.

Roland Wilson

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Roland H. Wilson, 81, of West Columbia, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, February 4, 2005, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, officiated by Rev. George T. Head and Rev. Pat Griffin. Burial will follow in Woodridge Memorial Park, Lexington. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Gathering Room at the church. Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington is handling arrangements. Memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1715 Broad River Rd., Columbia, SC 29210.

Mr. Wilson, widower of Ruth G. Wilson, died Monday, January 31, 2005. Born in Haddonfield, NJ, he was the son of the late Roland C. and Myrtle Marie Haddon Wilson. Mr. Wilson served in the United States Army Air Corps as a pilot during World War II. He had been a local resident since 1973 and was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Mr. Wilson was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and had retired as vice-president of a local cable manufacturing company.

Surviving are his daughter, Linda Wilson of West Columbia; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Martha Wilson of Lexington; brother, Robert Wilson of Brielle, NJ; grandchildren, Chris Wilson and Michelle Wilson of Lexington.

Linda Westmoreland

BATESBURG-LEESVILLE — Linda Westmoreland, 57, of Batesburg-Leesville, died Tuesday, February 1, 2005. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, February 3, 2005, at Milton Shealy Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Roselawn Cemetery with Rev. Dennis Lear officiating. Pallbearers will be Jason Maroney, Harold White, Jr., Marty Shealy, Shawn Tanner, Adam Maroney and Robert Hunt.

Mrs. Westmoreland was born in Monetta, SC, to the late John William and Cloda Myrtle Edwards Bagwell. She was a member of Worship Fellowship Church of God. She was a cashier with Kwik Karry II.

Surviving are her husband, Steve Westmoreland; daughters, Karen Bagwell of Orangeburg; Cheryl Hunt of Batesburg; Tammie Hutto of Batesburg; brother, Virgil Bagwell of Winnsboro; sisters, Betty White of Orangeburg; Thelma Maroney of Leesville; 6 grandchildren; preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Bagwell.

Family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 2, 2005, at Milton Shealy Funeral Home, other times at her residence.

Edith Coleman

GILBERT, Ariz. — Edith Stetson Coleman, born July 29, 1933, in Macon, Georgia, died on January 28, 2005, after a 6 ½ year battle with cancer. “Etee” as she was affectionately known, had resided in Gilbert, AZ, for 1 ½ years. She was the daughter of Elizabeth Heath Coleman of Columbia, SC, and Samuel Taylor Coleman, Jr., of Macon, GA. Her grandparents were Elizabeth Tennent and Moses Chappelle Heath of Columbia and Edith Stetson and Samuel T. Coleman, Sr., of Macon.

She is survived by two daughters, Susan Wiggins Rosencrantz and son-in-law, Noah L. Rosencrantz of Higley, AZ, and daughter, nee Elizabeth Heath Wiggins of Seattle, WA.

She also leaves behind a beloved cousin, Simpson J. Zimmerman, Jr. of Columbia and dearest friend, Tracy Hanna-Foye of Pawleys Island, SC; devoted nephew and wife, Coleman and Kim Hatcher of Fountain Inn, SC; niece, Holly DeShields of Taylors, SC, and two devoted cousins, Eugenia Wasden Bailey of Franklin, TN, and Edith Wasden Schwartz of Macon, GA.

Besides her family and friends, there remains her constant companions, Gigi, a deeply loved Golden Retriever and Noelle, a Springer Spaniel.

Etee was a survivor and she fought her last battle with cancer as she had fought and overcome many obstacles in her life. Her faith was strong. She will be missed by those who knew and loved her.

At her request there will be no service and she also asked that no donations be made. A note or card to the family would be appreciated. Cremation will be handled by National Cremation Society, Phoenix, AZ.

Ok Cha Birge

COLUMBIA — Ok Cha “Sandy” Birge was born in Seoul, South Korea, May 29, 1941, and died in the Republic of Panama, January 5, 2005.

Funeral services were held in Columbia, February 8, 2005, in Crescent Hill Memorial Garden.

Mrs. Birge is survived by her husband, Mike C. Birge; her son, Tony Zillmer and his wife; three stepchildren and two grandchildren.

Thomas Derrick

LEESVILLE — Services for Thomas Hampton Derrick, 75, will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday from Barr-Price Funeral Home Historic B-L Chapel. Burial will follow in Beulah UMC Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Derrick died Monday, January 31, 2005. Born in Lexington County, he was a son of the late Brady Cecil and Idee Price Derrick. He was a member of Beulah UMC and a retired mechanic at Bouknight Pontiac, Dick Flynt Pontiac and Aull Service Station.

Surviving are his wife, Polly Harmon Derrick; sons, Cecil R. and James E. Derrick of Leesville; daughters, Mary Jane McCarty of Leesville; Patricia Ann Hamilton of Bateburg; sister, Vina Mae Hallman of Leesville; 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

William Langley

SCRANTON — Mr. William Lamar Langley, 88, died Monday, January 31, 2005, in a Florence hospital after an illness.

Mr. Langley was born in Scranton, a son of the late Luther Van Langley, Sr. and Ruth Daniels Langley. He was a graduate of Scranton High School and was the owner and operator of Langley’s Grocery in Andrews for 26 years. After leaving Andrews, he was the manager of Rich’s Supermarket in Murfreesboro, N.C., for 10 years. He was an active member of Scranton United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir and chairman of the Administrative Board. He was a member of the Andrew’s Lions Club and was a volunteer with Boy Scouts of America and the American Red Cross. He was a former member of the Andrews United Methodist Church where he served as a steward in the church. He started the “Christmas Cheer” Program in Andrews. While in North Carolina, he received the North Carolina High School ICT “Employer of the Year” for three years.

Survivors include: his wife, Vendella Allen Langley of Scranton; one daughter, Miriam L. (Bill) Kendall of Fernandina Beach, Florida; two granddaughters, Sheryl K. (Grant) Arrington of Greensboro, N.C., and Angela Kendall of Orlando, Florida; one great-grandson, Phillip Arrington of Greensboro, N.C., and one great-granddaughter, Jordan Arrington of Greensboro, N.C. He was predeceased by one sister and three brothers.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 3, 2005, at the Scranton United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to: McLeod Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves Street, Florence, SC 29506, or Scranton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 159, Scranton, SC 29591.

The family will have visitation Thursday, February 3, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. at the Scranton United Methodist Church.

Ellen Fishburne

STATESVILLE, N.C. — Mrs. Ellen Osborne Murr Fishburne, 71, of 906 Restmore Lane, Statesville, N.C., died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, surrounded by her family, in the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C. Mrs. Fishburne suffered a cerebral hemorrhage at her home on Monday, Jan. 24, 2005.

She was born December 2, 1933, in Hickory, N.C., and was the daughter of the late Morris Neal (Red) Murr and Doris Shell Murr. She was a graduate of Hickory High School and Lenoir Rhyne College. On August 11, 1956, she was married to Loring Lee Fishburne, Sr., who survives.

For a number of years, she was a school teacher for the Statesville City Schools and the Iredel-Statesville School System, having taught at Northview, Pressly Elementary, Harmony and Celeste Henkel Elementary Schools.

Mrs. Fishburne was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church where she had taught pre-school and kindergarten and had been a member of the Alt Guild for over 25 years. Ellen was devoted to her family and friends. She was an avid gardener and also enjoyed bird watching, art, and time spent at the beach.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a baby brother, Morris Neal Murr, Jr.

Surviving family members are her husband, Loring Lee Fishburne, Sr., three daughters, Ellen F. Cartee of Columbia, S.C., who lost her husband, Larry Cartee, October of 2004, Margaret F. Goldston and husband, Bryan, of Goldston, N.C., Carol F. Pitts and husband, Steve, of Kingsport, TN, one son, Loring Lee Fishburne, Jr., of Carrboro, N.C., three grandchildren, Susannah Goldston, Raleigh, N.C., Emily Goldston, Southern Pines, N.C., and Brett Seats, Columbia, S.C. She is also survived by one brother, David L. Murr and wife, Jacqui, of Durham, N.C., two aunts, Virginia S. Lineberger, Hickory, N.C, and Katherine M. Nibbelink, West Chester, N.Y., along with a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. Brad Mullis officiating. Interment will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Danny Lippard, Brian Niblock, Ben Levenson, Dick Griggs, Matthew Poole, and Bill Balaton.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, for the flower fund or building fund, c/o P.O. Box 1103, Statesville, NC 28687, or to Hospice of Catawba County, 3975 Robinson Rd., Newton, NC 28658.
