Margaret Lawson

SPARTANBURG — Margaret Frances Furse Lawson, 76, of 111 Neely Avenue, died Friday, February 4, 2005, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born June 8, 1928, in Florence, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Leon Charles Furse, Sr. and Fannie Curry Cornwell Furse and the wife of the late William J. Lawson, Sr. She was of the Presbyterian faith.

Survivors include two sons, William J. Lawson, Jr. and John T. Lawson, both of Spartanburg; a sister, Juanita F. Calhoun of Myrtle Beach; and two brothers, Leon C. Furse, Jr. of Winter Haven, FL, and Thomas R. Furse of Columbia.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 6, 2005, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Joe Dempsey. The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.

The family is at the home.

Mary McAlhany

BEAUFORT — Mary Ola Murdaugh McAlhany, 65, widow of Roy Heyward McAlhany, died February 4, 2005, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Family will receive friends on Sunday, February 6, from 4-6 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 7, at 11 a.m. at The Baptist Church of Beaufort with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Mrs. McAlhany was born on October 9, 1939, in Smoaks, SC, a daughter of the late Curtis H. “Jack” Murdaugh and Eleanor Maxey Murdaugh.

She was a homemaker and a member of Riverview Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons, Roy H. McAlhany, Jr., (Cindy) of Beaufort, Joseph McAlhany (Georgeane) of Albany, OR, two daughters, Darlene Smith of Hilton Head, Amy Duncan (Brett) of Beaufort, a brother, Marshall Murdaugh of St. George, SC, two sisters, Myrtle Bentley of Walterboro, Judy Axson of Columbia, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, 1941 Savage Rd., Suite 200A, Charleston, SC 29407.

Anderson Funeral Home is serving the family.

Donald James

CAMDEN — Graveside services for Donald Russell James, 85, of Camden, will be held at 4:00 PM Monday, February 7, 2005 in Quaker Cemetery. Reverend Bruce Hancock and Reverend Carl Witt will officiate. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29129 or the Hospice of Kershaw County, 2001 W. DeKalb Street, Camden, SC 29020. Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is in charge.

Mr. James died Friday, February 4, 2005. Born in Findlay, Illinois, he was the son of the late Edward Russell and Pansy Belle Park James. Mr. James was a retired home builder. He was a graduate of Milliken College and a member of First Baptist Church of Camden. A retired Senior Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, he was World War II veteran having served in the Pacific Theatre.

Surviving are daughter, Kim Gill and her husband, Edward, of Camden; son, Kary James and his wife, Kimberly, of Hobe Sound, Florida; grandchildren, Ryan, Cameron and Taylor Gill; Tyler and Clay James; sister, Ruby Moore of California and niece, Cheryl Riley of California.

James Wright

COLUMBIA — Services for James Lee Wright will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the Greater St. Luke Baptist Church with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel is in charge. Surviving are his daughters, Jacqueline Ross, Carolyn Parker, and Sandra Butler; brothers, Willie Wright, Sr., Joe Cornish, James Jones, Roy Jones, George Jones, Ezell Starks, Freddie Starks; sister, Inez Cale.

Rock Truett

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for T. E. “Rock” Truett, Jr., 78, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 7, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dr. Jeri Parris Perkins will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Sunday, February 6, 2005, from 3-5 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 213 West Home Avenue, Hartsville, SC 29550 or American Heart Association BTC 009, 181 East Evans St. Suite 206, Florence, SC 29506.

Mr. Truett died Friday, February 4, 2005. Born in Florence Co., SC, he was a son of the late T. E. Truett, Sr. and the late Mildred Graham Truett Hughes. Following his 1944 graduation from Hartsville High School, he entered the Army. He completed basic training in Florida, was stationed in Germany and France for two years and discharged as a sergeant. Upon his return to the states he attended Wake Forest University and was graduated from Coker College in 1951 with a BS in biology. He was employed by the Coker Pedigreed Seed Company in Hartsville, International Minerals and Chemical Company as plant manager and retired as an employee of the State of South Carolina.

Mr. Truett was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir for many years. He was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173 and a lifetime member of the VFW.

Surviving are his wife, Jane Woodward Truett of Hartsville, SC; sons and daughters-in-law, T. E. “Stoney” and Valerie Anderson Truett, III of Cayce, SC, Leslie Woodward “Chip” and Jill Reh Truett of Lexington, SC; daughter, Theresa Truett of Hartsville, SC; grandson, Tom Truett of Lexington, SC.

Hazel Sherrill

GASTON — Services for Hazel Amerson Sherrill, 66, will be held Monday, February 07, 2005 at 2:00 PM at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, with interment to follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday, February 06, 2005 from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Foundation.

Mrs. Sherrill died Saturday, February 05, 2005. Born in Hartsville, SC, she was the daughter of the late John James and Lillian Myrtle Cook Amerson. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.

Surviving are her sons, Robert Dubose of Lexington and Steve Dubose of West Columbia; brothers, James Amerson of Lexington; Charles Amerson of Columbia; Wayne Amerson of West Columbia; Ronnie Amerson of Gaston and Curtis Amerson of Lexington; a sister, Dianne Ward of Lexington; 3 grandchildren and many friends and family who loved her.

Harold Peters Jr.

COLUMBIA — Memorial services for Harold Leon Peters, Jr., 59, will be held Sunday, February 06, 2005 at 2:00 PM at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oliver Gospel Mission, PO Box 7791, Columbia, SC 29202.

Mr. Peters died Friday, January 18, 2005. He was the son of Vickie Brusseau Peters and the late Harold L. Peters, Sr.

He is survived by his daughter, Shannon Lee Peters of Spartanburg, SC; grandchildren, Todd Slater, Brett Slater and Justin Slater; sisters, Agnes Mary Ryan and Leigh Peters Harlin of Lexington; brother, Rick Peters of Conway, SC.

Glenn Cottle

ISANTI, Minn. — Glenn David Cottle, 43, of Isanti, Minn., died Jan. 22. He was an engineer for Pacific Railway Co. He is predceased by his wife Patricia Cottle.

He is survived by his mother, Anita Cottle Palumbo of Camden; and three stepsons , Jason Manis of Monticello, Karl Cottle of California, Scott Manis of St. Frances, Minn., and three step grandchildren Kristin, B.J. and Tricia. No local services are planned. Memorials may be made to St. Timothy’s Luthern Church, 1301 Mill St., Camden, S.C. 29020.

Lola Cowans

COLUMBIA — Services for Lola Alice Cowans will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Jones Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church with burial in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel, is in charge.

Surviving are her daughter, Monique Cowans; mother, Dorothy Grant; grandson, Rasheed Rucker; sisters, Cynthia Grant, Melvenia Jones, Wallis Ann Grant, Andrena Kelly, Doretha Taylor, and Linda Nelson; brother, Ricky (Stephanie) Nelson; son-in-law, Rasheed R. Rucker.

Tencie Gifford

ESTILL — On February 4, 2005, Mrs. Tencie Frye Gifford, the widow of Robert Smart “Perry” Gifford, passed away after an extended illness.

She was a daughter of the late B. Frank Frye and Naomi Gore Frye. She is survived by one daughter; Ellen Naomi Gifford of Beaufort; two sons, Neil Odell Gifford and wife, Amy and Robert Smart “Bobma” Gifford and wife, Elaine, both of Estill; grandchildren, Lindsay, Branham, Perry and Jesse Gifford. She is also survived by one sister, Dorothy Frye Wise of Aynor, SC and one brother, Joseph Howard Frye of Spartanburg, SC as well as a special niece, Cathie Phillips of Atlanta, GA.

Mrs. Gifford has been a resident of Estill since 1951 and was affectionately known as “Aunt Tencie.” She was a graduate of Coker College and did graduate work at the University of South Carolina. She taught in Hampton County District 2 schools, Allendale County schools and Patrick Henry Academy. She served as Director of Math and Science in Hampton County School District 2. Mrs. Gifford owned and operated the first kindergarten in Estill.

She was an active member of the Estill United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women and was a certified lay speaker in The United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Gifford was an active member of many organizations, including the Music Club, Young at Heart Organization, Bridge Clubs and the American Legion Auxiliary, where she worked with the Girls State Organization for many year.

Services will be held at the Estill United Methodist Church at 2 PM, Sunday, February 6, 2005, with interment following at Lawtonville Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Dr. Jamie Norris and Rev. Mike Written.

Friends may call at the Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, Estill Chapel, 330 Clarke Avenue, Estill, SC 29918 from 6:30 until 8:30 on Saturday evening and before 1 PM on Sunday when the casket will be placed in the church prior to services.

Memorials may be made to Estill United Methodist Church, PO Box 70, Estill, SC 29918 or to Carolina Hospice, PO Box 4579, Beaufort, SC 29902.
