Greene Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel, Rock Hill, S.C., is in charge. Born in York, she died Feb. 4, 2005. Surviving are three children; 6 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren.

Burwell Manning

COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Burwell Deas Manning, Jr., 74, of 4801 Kilbourne Road, Columbia, will be held at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, at 3:00 pm Sunday. Following the service interment will take place at the Brown Chapel AME Church cemetery in Arturtown, which is adjacent to Mr. Manning’s farm. The funeral cortege will make a brief tour of the farm before the interment. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mr. Manning was the husband of Bee Kalmbach Manning. He died at his home on February 4, 2005 of a heart attack.

Mr. Manning was born February 6, 1930 in Columbia, South Carolina, the son of Burwell Deas Manning and Katharine Heath Manning Perry. He was graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia in 1947 where he was head monitor, middle weight Golden Gloves boxer and a varsity pole vaulter. After a year’s enrollment at Texas A&M University, he returned to Columbia and began farming in the Bluff Road area south of Columbia.

Beginning in the late 1960s, Mr. Manning built a levy system for his property between Bluff Road and the Congaree River, allowing him to put marginally productive pasture lands into full agricultural production. His farm specialized seed corn and soybeans seed and was a principal Associate Grower and Processor for Coker Pedigreed Seed Company from the 1960s though the 1980s. At peak, Mr. Manning farmed 10,000 acres of land, including more than 5,000 acres in the Bluff Road area, as well as tracts in the Congaree Creek, Eastover and Wateree River areas.

Mr. Manning donated to Heathwood Hall Episcopal School the land on which the school now stands, his mother having donated the original family home, Heathwood Hall, for the establishment of the school.

Mr. Manning was a friend, mentor and father-figure to generations of Columbians who were attracted to him by his generosity, optimism, determination, independence, and especially by the passion with which he lived his life. His humor and sense of fun were legendary. For over 30 years, Mr. Manning employed high school aged sons of friends and neighbors on his farm, working as many as 50 teenagers at a time during the most labor intensive parts of the summer. Many leaders of the Columbia community now in their forties and fifties had their first experience with work on Mr. Manning’s farm. Many Columbia parents thanked Mr. Manning nightly when their sons returned home from work too exhausted to do more than shower and fall asleep.

He believed deeply in the value of hard work, no matter how menial, as the key to building character. He taught young men to stand up for what they believed, to be uncompromising in their honesty and to be unwavering in their commitments. He disliked all pretense, indecision, disloyalty, and waffling.

His loyalty to his friends and his tenacity in defending his property were legendary. His vision for his farm, which is within two miles of the State House in Columbia, was that it eventually be developed as residential and commercial community with green spaces and protected wetlands and wildlife habitat.

Mr. Manning was an avid outdoorsman. His passion for hunting doves and ducks matured in his later years into a passion for hosting shoots for his friends. His fall dove hunts, which were held in the fields surrounding Heathwood Hall, were his great love.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Burwell Deas Manning, III; Katharine Manning Zeigler, Meredith Manning Stepp; Lucy Manning Barwick; Lynn Manning Cooper, and William Tennent Manning, and his brother Chappell Heath Manning, all of Columbia, and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Lelia Manning Cart.

Pallbearers will be Alec Chaplin, William C. Boyd, Jr., Arthur Gudmundson, Kirkman Finlay, III, Deas Manning, IV, McLain Manning, Townsend Zeigler, Jr., and Sanford Zeigler.

Many who knew him said he broke the mold, but those who knew him best believed no mold was ever involved.

Memorials may be made to the perpetual care fund of the Brown Chapel AME Church, Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, Sandhills Academy or Trinity Cathedral.
