Robert Howe

LYNCHBURG — Robert M. “Bobby” Howe, 63, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at Carriage House in Sumter.

Born in Washington , D.C., he was a son of Eleanor Tallon Howe and the late James E. Howe Sr.

He was a member of Lynchburg Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his mother of Lynchburg include a brother, James E. Howe Jr. of Aster, FL; two sisters, Judith Brown of Lynchburg and Betty Baer of Charlotte, N.C.; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Florence National Cemetery with Rev. Theron Tomlimson and Rev. Timothy Coker officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at the home, 37 Timmons St., Lynchburg.

Memorials may be made to Lynchburg Baptist Church, 288 Church St., Lynchburg, SC 29080.

Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

CHERAW — Services with burial for Alex James “A.J.” Wilks, 75, Korean veteran, Sonoco Ind. retiree, 3 p.m. today: Wilkes Chapel UMC, where he was a member. Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield, is in charge. Born in Chesterfield Co. to Alex and Bertha Brown Wilks, he died Feb. 7, 2005. Surviving: wife, Clarice Freeman Wilks; siblings, Ida Belle Stevens, Dewey, Peter, Eugene Wilks, Louise Gainey.

Joseph Voelker

LEXINGTON — Services for Joseph Louis Voelker, 61, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 10, 2005, with interment to follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 9, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Memorials may be made to American Heart Association, 520 Gervais St., Columbia, SC 29201.

Mr. Voelker died Sunday, February 6, 2005. Born in Washington , D.C., and raised in Silver Spring, MD, he was the son of the late Dr. Joseph W. and Lola Mae Patton Voelker. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. Voelker is survived by his wife, Sandra Voelker of Lexington; son, David Rhoades of Martinez, GA; daughter, Tamara Shaw of Clover, SC; son, Joey Voelker of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Connie Henderson, Wade Dial, Cory and Tara Rhoades; sister, Janet Culver of Annapolis, MD.

Fred Rebar

HARTSVILLE — A memorial service for Frederick Anthony Rebar, 46, 3 p.m. Sunday at Middendorf Baptist Church. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Born in New Orleans, La, to Nathalie Ann Ruiz-Pullens and the late Frederick Anthony Rebar II, he died February 6, 2005. Surviving: his daughters, Brandy Rebar, Leslie Tolson; grandson, Ace Tolson; foster parents, Major and Eloise Bullard.

Evelyn Inabinet

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Evelyn Harley Inabinet 85, died February 6, 2005. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Brogden Inabinet; parents, William & Corine Fulmer Harley; siblings: Auburn, Madie & Clinton Harley, Azilee H. Rish, Marie H. Rogers, Panzie H. Danby. Surviving: sons & daughters-in-law, The Reverend Edward & Sherry Inabinet, Bill & Blanche Inabinet, Cary and Macre Inabinet; daughter & son-in-law, Selina & King Duncan; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.

Ralph Morrow

SUMTER — Services for Ralph Dean Morrow, 80, USAF WWII veteran, graduate of Furman Univ. and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 11 a.m. Thursday in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Laurens Co. to Maurice Sr. and Elizabeth Davis Morrow, he died Feb. 7, 2005. Surviving: siblings, Rev. Dr. D.B. Morrow Jr., Margaret Albergotti.

Linda Johnson

WILLISTON — Services for Linda Dodson Johnson, 58, will be held 4:00 P.M. Thursday, February 10, 2005, at the Folk Funeral Home Chapel in Williston with burial in the Williston Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Rex and Candi Brown, 190 Janet Street, in Williston and Folk Funeral Home 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, 9 Richland Medical Park Drive, Suite 600, Columbia, SC 29203.

Mrs. Johnson died Tuesday. Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late William Allen Dodson and Mary Gallagher Dodson, a 1965 graduate of AC Flora High School in Columbia, a 1989 graduate of Orangeburg Technical College with a major in respiratory therapy, a member of the Williston United Methodist Church, Ivy Garden Club, Ladies Night Out Dinner Club, former member of the Williston Rescue Squad and past chairman of the Wonderful Williston Weekend. She was an avid pageant grandmother and seamstress by trade. She was the former owner of the Daisy Pot Florist. Linda formerly worked for the Ducane Company, Aiken Regional Medical Center and Providence Hospital as a respiratory therapist.

Survivors include her husband, Evans H. Johnson, Jr.; children, Rex and Candi Johnson, Tommy and Kim Trantham, William E. (Bill) and Jessica Johnson and Precious Johnson; grandchildren, Courtney Carlisle Brown, Bradley Allen Welch, Marshall O. (Trey) Welch, Brittany Lynn Welch, Paisley Danielle Trantham, Gwen and Jillien Johnson, Belle and Ritzy Brown, Brandy, Abe, Chinaqepin, Cinnamon Trantham.

Eloise Matthews

WINNSBORO — Funeral services for Eloise Cork Matthews will be held 1 p.m. Friday, February 11, 2005, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, conducted by Rev. Preston Huntley and Rev. Ken Weldon. Burial will follow in Bethel ARP Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Pope Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Charlotte, 1420 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 29204 or to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 301 West Liberty Street, Winnsboro, SC 29180.

Mrs. Matthews, 88, widow of John Palmer Matthews, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005.

Born December 29, 1916, in Darlington, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Travis Coleman Cork and Harriett Ruff Cork.

Mrs. Matthews had retired as a bookkeeper for UniRoyal, Inc., and was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and a graduate of Florida State College.

Surviving are a son, John P. Matthews Jr. and wife, Terri, of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter, Travis M. Weldon and husband, Eddie, of Fort Mill; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Annie Edwards

COLUMBIA — Services for Mrs. Annie Bell Swygert, 99, of 4520 Monticello Road, Apt. 15-D, will be 3 p.m. Friday at Community C.M.E. Church, with burial in Palmetto Cemetery.

A daughter of the late Jackson Stonewall Swygert and Annie Bell Swygert, she was born in Columbia, and died on Sunday, February 6, 2005, at her residence.

She was the widow of George Edwards. She was predeceased by a daughter, Helen Bellinger Kimble.

She received her early education at Allen Preparatory School, now Allen University, and was a member of Emanuel A.M.E. Church and Community C.M.E. Church, where she was named the “Mother” of the church and served on the Missionary Society.

Visitation will be 2 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. today at the Manigault-Hurley Funeral Home Chapel, 2229 Two Notch Road.

She retired from the Veterans Hospital, Chicago, IL after forty years in the Dietary Department.

Survivors are: nieces, Diane M. Hill, of Chicago, Billie E. Woodard, of Eastover; nephews, Johnny Edwards, West Orange, NJ, Kenneth Thomas, and Ronald Thomas, of Chicago, IL; ten grand nieces; nine grand nephews; other relatives and many loving friends.

Dr. Russell Mellette Jr.

MOUNT PLEASANT — Russell Ramsey Mellette, Jr., M.D., 77, of Mt. Pleasant, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at his residence. He was born December 11, 1927, in Orangeburg, S.C., a son of the late Russell Ramsey, Sr. and Lucille Gunter Mellette. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly McClain Mellette and a son, Jeffrey Allen Mellette. Ramsey was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during the Korean War, and of the U.S. Army. He was a graduate of Clemson Univ. 1944-1946, The Medical College of South Carolina 1946-1950, and University of Colorado, Graduate School 1976-1977. He was the first Board Certified Child Psychiatrist in South Carolina, and was certified by the American Board of Psychiatry as a diplomat in General Psychiatry and in Child Psychiatry. He was Past Dean, Division of Continuing Education, MUSC, 1979-1984, Professor of Pediatrics and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, MUSC, 1982-1986, Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, MUSC, 1986-present, Associate Dean, College of Medicine, MUSC, 1982-1986, and Medical Director, South Carolina Consortium of Community Teaching Hospitals, MUSC, 1983-1986. He was Board Examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in General Psychiatry from 1979 to present and in Child Psychiatry from 1980 to present. He had earned the South Carolina Mental Health Assoc., Distinguished Service Award in 1966, Distinguished Alumni, Clemson Univ., 1986, and South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians’ President’s Award in 1988. The good doctor was Chairman of Charleston County Dept. of Social Service Child Protective Advisory Board from 1974-1980, was an internationally recognized “expert” in Low Country folk and root medicine from 1962 to present, and Associate Teacher: Men’s Sunday School Class, First Baptist Church, Charleston from 1970 to present. He is survived by his sons, Russell Ramsey Mellette, III and Robert Steven Mellette; daughters and a son-in-law, Cynthia Ann Thompson and Denise Marie and William Taylor; a sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Richard Thomas; grandchildren, Cortie, Matthew, and Nathan Thompson, and Justin Taylor. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, Dr. Mellette’s family asks that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Rd., Suite 504, Bank of America Bldg., North Charleston, SC 29406 or Hospice of Charleston, 3870 Leeds Ave., Suite 101, North Charleston, SC 29405. The Palmetto Cremation Society, Charleston, is care of arrangements.

Mike Middleton

PELION — Services will be Saturday, Feb. 22, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Darian Baptist Church, Pelion, with burial in the church cemetery (viewing 1 p.m.). Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday at J.H. Robinson Funeral Home, Wagener. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Essie Middleton. Mr. Middleton died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at the Lexington Medical Center, W. Columbia. He was a member of Darian Baptist Church.

Surviving are his soul mate, Geraldine B. Mays; son, Curtis Jones; brothers, Billy Middleton and Rev. Stanley Haitiwanger; sisters, Alice and Robin Middleton and Linda Williams; stepdaughter, Clarissa Jackson; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.
