J. Michael Smoak

HOLLY HILL — Mr. J. Michael “Mike” Smoak, 63, of 2207 Branchdale Hwy., Holly Hill, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at Trident Medical Center in Charleston.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Target United Methodist Church with Rev. Barry Brinson and Rev. David Simpson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.

Mr. Smoak was born in Eutawville, a son of the late Isaac D. Smoak and Rosa Russell Smoak. He was a 1959 graduate of Holly Hill High School, a Navy veteran, and retired from Holcim Cement Corporation. He was a member of Target United Methodist Church, Vance Masonic Lodge, and Fishers of Men.

Surviving are his wife, Dianne Dyches Osborne Smoak of the home; daughter, Suzette S. Herndon of Holly Hill; son, George Michael Smoak of Holly Hill; sister, Mrs. Sylvia Simpson of Mount Airy, MD; brothers, I. Dykes Smoak of Holly Hill and Rev. Jimmy Smoak of Orangeburg; and four grandchildren.

Friends may call at Avinger Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. this (Thursday) evening. Memorials may be made to the Target UMC Cemetery Fund, PO Box 1303, Holly Hill, SC 29059.

Katie Carter

LEESVILLE — Katie Robinson Carter of Chesterfield Court, Leesville, died February 6, 2005, at her residence. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, February 11, 2005, at Shady Grove Baptist Church with burial in the church Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Walter Hill, II.

A daughter of the late Charlie and Rebbie Crafton Robinson, she was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Carter. She was a faithful member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. She was employed with Lexington Medical Extended Care as a CNA for many years.

Surviving are: one son, Kari Carter, of the home; one daughter, Viola Bacote, Columbia; one stepdaughter, Mary E. Jones, Batesburg; one brother, James Robinson, Washington , D.C.; four sisters-in-law, Mary Robinson, Washington , D.C., Lillie B. Carter and Arlee Carter, both of Batesburg, and Alberta Lewis, Columbia; two brothers-in-law, Claude Carter and Jefferson Carter, both of Batesburg; three grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and sixteen great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Fred Perry

LAKE CITY — Mr. Fredona “Fred” Perry, 94, widower of Corine Eubanks Perry, died February 8, 2005, after an illness.

Mr. Perry was born in Columbia, South Carolina, a son of the late Daniel Dalton V. and Eula Hammonds Perry. He was the owner and operator of Perry Motors. Mr. Perry was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, member of the Men’s Bible Class and a Deacon Emeritus. He was a Shriner for over fifty years and a veteran of the United States Navy, having served in World War II.

Survivors include: six grandchildren, Wayne (Leigh) Carter, Jeff (Trish) Carter, Stephanie (Harold) Rumph, Kim (Tom) VanderHeiden, Diane (Bill) Gardner; twelve great-grandchildren, Chad Carter, Christin Carter, Clay Carter, Tony Carter, Ellen Woodbridge, Joshua VanderHeiden, Kassaundra VanderHeiden, Zachary VanderHeiden, Jesse Gardner, Ty Gardner, Halle Gardner and Erika Perry; two great-great-grandchildren, Trevor Carter and Payton Carter and one son-in-law, Robert A. Carter of Dallas, TX. He was blessed with a special nephew, Donald E. (Angela) Perry, Sr. of Surfside Beach; two nieces, Barbara P. (Marion) Benton of Murrells Inlet and Shannon P. (Glenn) Arnette of Flagher Beach, Florida. He was predeceased by his wife, Corine Eubanks Perry; one son, John D. Perry; and one daughter, Nancy P. Carter; one grandson, Freddie T. Perry; two brothers, Vincent Perry of Mobile, Alabama, Carl Perry of Myrtle Beach; four sisters, Erma P. Miller of Oregon, Beulah P. Shull of Lexington, SC, Marian P. Nelson of Lexington, SC, and Winona P. Butler of Jackson, TN.

Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 12, 2005, at Calvary Baptist Church with burial at 3:00 p.m. in Celestial Memorial Gardens, West Columbia, SC.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1147, Lake City, SC 29560.

The family will have visitation from 6:30-8:30 Friday evening at the funeral home.

Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge.

Gwendylon Hancock

GREENWOOD — Gwendylon Spires “Gwen” Hancock, 72, resident of 168 Orchard Park Drive, wife of SMS Gene Porter Hancock, died February 8, 2005, at Self Regional Medical Center.

She was a graduate of Ninety Six High School and the York County Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Hancock retired from the office of Dr. Casper E. Wiggins.

A member of Woodfields Baptist Church and the Canasta Club, she was an avid Gamecock Fan and was a member of the Gamecock Club. She was a former member of the Greenwood Woman’s Club.

Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are a daughter, Tara and husband Tommy Stoddard of Greenwood and a son, Rhett and wife Allyson Hancock of Greenville; a brother, Ansel and wife Elizabeth “Lib” Spires of Greenwood; grandchildren, Katie Stoddard, Thomas Stoddard, Kristin Hancock and Matthew Hancock. A lifelong friend, Marcene D. Little of Rock Hill.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Woodfields Baptist Church with Rev. Roger Kinion, Dr. Robert Miller and Dr. Tony Hopkins officiating.

Burial will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park.

The body is at the home of Tara and Tommy Stoddard, 307 Forest Lane, and will receive friends at Blyth Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday evening.

Barbara Brooker

LONE TREE, Colo. — Barbara Lynn Helmer Brooker, 54, of Lone Tree, CO died Sunday, February 6, 2005. She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Lucius C. Brooker; daughter, Lauren Brooker and son, Ben Brooker. She is also survived by her sister, Kathleen Helmer (Frank) Boggs of Duluth, GA and brother, Albert James (Stephanie) Helmer, Jr. of Corydon, IN.

Born in Sheboygan, WI, she was the daughter of the late Albert James Helmer, Sr. and Adela Theresa Galousek Helmer.

Barbara began her career as an art teacher in Kentucky, South Carolina and Colorado. She worked for Merrill Lynch and was currently employed as an analyst at Jackson National Life.

Visitation is Wednesday, February 9, 5-6 P.M. with funeral service Thursday, February 10, at 10 A.M., both at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary, 6601 S. Colorado Blvd., Littleton, CO 80121. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to American Heart Association, 1280 S. Parker Rd., Denver, CO 80231.

Julia Burgess

FLORENCE — Funeral services for Mrs. Julia Guiles Burgess will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, February 10, 2005, at Mill Branch A.M.E. Church, Pamplico. Burial will follow in Florence National Cemetery. She died Thursday, February 3, 2005, in a Columbia hospital. She was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Rev. William Samuel Guiles and Areta Green Guiles. Mrs. Burgess was a graduate of Wilson High School Class of 1940, Allen University Class of 1944 and the University of South Carolina. She served as the church organist of Mill Branch A.M.E. Church for many years. She was a retired schoolteacher, member of GAMMA NU Chapter AKA Sorority, Order of Eastern Star, Zoe Club, Women’s Missionary Society and a member of Columbia Chapter of the GAAU. Survivors are: two sons, Walter L. Burgess, Jr., Oakland, CA and David Burgess, Columbia, SC; three daughters, Angela Burgess, Oakland, CA, Sheila Cacho, Columbia, SC, and Norma ( Eddie) Wider, Charlotte, NC; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Alexander Guiles, Florence, SC; two sisters, Mary (Horace) Thomas, Berlin, CT and Kay Bertha Davis, New Britain, CT; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. AKA and Eastern Star rites will be held Wednesday night from 7-8 p.m. in the Chapel of Ideal Funeral Parlor. Family will receive friends other times at 1562 Frye Road Columbia. SUMTER — Services for Agnes Irene M. Brunson, 83, are 2 p.m. Friday at Beulah AME Church. Burial: Walker Cemetery. Job’s Mortuary is in charge. Born in Sumter to Walter and Lucille Johnson McKeiver, she died Feb. 5, 2005. Surviving: spouse: David; children, Deloris Black, David Jr., Tyrone, Darlene Brunson; grand reared in the home, Monique Primus; grandson, David Brunson III; other grandchildren; siblings.

William Cantey

GREELEYVILLE — William Corneilous “Billy” Cantey Jr., 66, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at his residence. Mr. Cantey was born Feb. 23, 1938, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late William C. Cantey Sr. and Mrs. Daisy Baylor Cantey. He was a farmer and member of McDowell Presbyterian Church. Mr. Cantey was a former member of the S.C. National Guard and a former quail hunting guide. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra M. Cantey, and a sister, Janie C. Barnes.

Surviving: 2 daughters, Teri C. (Chris) Ward and Patti C. Patrick, both of Greeleyville; son, Neil (Jade) Cantey of Cades; 8 grandchildren: McKenzie Ann Ward, Lajoe M. Ward, Drake S. Patrick, Billie Ann Patrick, Bill Cantey, Doty R. Cantey, Madison Blake Cantey and Nathan Brock Cantey; 2 sisters, Elizabeth C. Perry of Columbia and Nina C. Bradley of Palm Harbor, FL.

Kathryn Williams

EDGEFIELD — Services with burial for Miss Kathryn Rebecca Williams, 88, are 11 a.m. Friday at Gilgal Baptist Church. Visitation is 6-7:30 tonight at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home. She died February 9, 2005, in Trinity Mission Health and Rehab Center. Surviving: siblings, Clifton Williams, Ida Locklair; sister-in-law, Lunette Williams; nieces; nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Joe, Bland and Lanham Williams.

William Turbeville Jr.

AUSTIN, Texas — Mr. William J. “Jack” Turbeville, Jr., age 89, of Austin, loving son of Jasper and Lucille Turbeville, died Monday, February 7, 2005.

Mr. Turbeville began his distinguished career in the field of international trade and the fertilizer industry in 1936 when he joined American Agriculture Chemical Company (Agrico) as a trainee salesman. By 1963, when Agrico was acquired by the Continental Oil Company (Conoco), Mr. Turbeville had advanced to become Agrico’s President and Chairman of the Board. From 1963, Mr. Turbeville was Vice President and General Manager, Plant Foods of Conoco as well as President and Chairman of Agrico. In 1966, he was also appointed as Chairman of Amalgamated Chemicals, an Australian conglomerate of 42 separate companies owned by Conoco.

In 1972, when Agrico was acquired by the Williams Company, he served for a brief period as Vice Chairman of the Williams Board, and later that same year was appointed as Chairman and CEO of the Board of the Phosphate Rock Export Association, the marketing organization representing virtually all the major companies in the U.S. phosphate industry. He served in that position with distinction until 1984.

In addition to other industry activity, Mr. Turbeville has served as Chairman of the Board of the Fertilizer Institute, President of the International Super Phosphate Association headquartered in Paris—the only American elected to that position, and Vice Chairman of the Fertilizer Advisory Committee of the Food and Agriculture Organization headquartered in Rome.

Mr. Turbeville is past Chairman of the Tampa Committee of 100, past trustee of the Florida Council of 100, and was honored as the Florida International Business Person of the Year in 1979, and Tampa Maritime Man of the Year 1982-83. He was an overseer of Old Sturbridge Village.

Mr. Turbeville has served on the Board of Directors of various corporations including TECO Energy Company, First National Bank of Lakeland, Second National Bank of Tampa, First Florida Bank of Tampa, and ConAgra Fertilizer Company of Knoxville, Tennessee.

Mr. Turbeville was a native of Turbeville, South Carolina, degreed graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan College, later receiving a Ph.D. During WW II, he served in the European Theatre and rose from Private to Major in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Turbeville was a 60 year member of Masonic Lodge, Highland Lodge #38, Hillsboro, Ohio and a member of Palma Ceia United Methodist Church in Tampa, Florida. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Ruth; and sons, Dan and Larry; grandson, Raskal Jack; two sisters, Rebecca and Polly; and one brother, Bill.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February, 11, 2005 at Pinegrove Cemetery in Turbeville, South Carolina.
