Lucy Galvan

COLUMBIA — A Memorial Mass for Lucy Maria Galvan, 72, will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge. Memorials may be made to St. John Neumann Catholic School, 721 Polo Road, Columbia, SC 29223.

Mrs. Galvan, wife of the late Louis Anthony Galvan, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005. Born in Caguas, Puerto Rico, she was the daughter of the late Juan and Gloria Fernandez. Mrs. Galvan was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Valerie Bellini and her husband, Ralph, of Columbia; sons, Louis Anthony Galvan and Gregory Galvan, both of California; sisters, Anna J. Herzog of Poughkeepsie, New York, and Iris V. Solis of Ontario, California; and five grandchildren, Gina and Lisa Bellini, and Tony, Sean, and Kenneth Galvan.

Lucy resided with her daughter Valerie and son-in-law Ralph and granddaughters Gina and Lisa for the past twelve years. She was very involved in her granddaughters’ activities, volunteering at their school functions, and was their biggest gymnastics fan. Everyone will miss her friendly, cheerful smile, and now we will celebrate her life.

Special thanks to all her angels at Life Care Center of Columbia. “MaMa Lou” and the Bellini family could not have made it through without you.

Elijah Greene Jr.

YEMASSEE — Services for Elijah Chester Greene Jr., 55, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives from 7-8 tonight, Thursday, in the chapel of Young Funeral Home. He died Saturday, February 5, 2005, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Doris McDonald

DILLON — Services for Mrs. Doris H. McDonald will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday at Dillon Pentecostal Holiness Church with entombment in Evergreen Cemetery Mausoleum. Visitation will be held 7-9 P.M. Thursday in Cooper Funeral Home.

Mrs. McDonald, 79, died Monday, February 7, 2005 in the McLeod Medical Center in Dillon.

Born November 23, 1925, in Darlington County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late John Franklin Height and Ressie Lee Evans Height. She was a member of the Dillon Pentecostal Holiness Church, was a former Sunday School teacher at the Socastee and Dillon churches, and was a charter member of the Woodmen of the World Ladies’ Lodge. She was married, first to the late Nollie C. Mew and then to the late Joe Wade McDonald, Sr. Doris and her first husband Nollie actively sang in church at Socastee and on the radio. She was a retired sales clerk.

Survivors include her daughters, Beverly M. (Charles) Berry of Latta, Kimberly M. (Mike) Fryer of Dillon and Ann M. (Chris) Ingels of Cincinnati, Ohio; sons, Joe Wade (Hope) McDonald, Jr. of Dillon and John Edens McDonald of Indianapolis, Indiana; sisters, Odessa H. Mew of Myrtle Beach, Lillie H. (Pete) Vallette of Whitesboro, NY, Betty H. Hasty of Shallotte, NC and Vicky H. (Elliott) Turner of Dillon; 14 beloved grandchildren and 3 beloved great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased in death by her daughter, Brenda M. Linett; brothers, Farrell Height, J.A. Height and John Franklin Height, Jr. and a sister, Peggy Ann Height.

Lewis Hickerson

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Lewis Lee Hickerson, 64, will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at the First Church of the Living God, West Columbia, with interment to follow in Gibson Cemetery, West Columbia. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to the First Church of the Living God, 2818 Windham Drive, West Columbia, SC 29170.

Mr. Hickerson, husband of Gracie Corder Hickerson, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late Alfred and Minnie Lee Pullings Hickerson. Mr. Hickerson had retired from Owens Steel.

Surviving are his wife; a daughter Elizabeth Roberts and her husband John Walter, of Cayce; a brother Alfred Joe Hickerson, of Gaston; a sister Lillie Lee, of Columbia; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Hickerson was predeceased by a sister Edna Broome.

The family would like to thank Lexington Medical Center, Portsbridge Hospice, and Capital City Ambulance for their caring assistance.

William Hill

ST. GEORGE — William G. “Buddy” Hill, 60, of St. George, died suddenly Wednesday. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Bryant Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the St. George Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bryant Funeral Home. Born in Sneeds Ferry, N.C., he was a son of the late William G. and Susie Norton Hill. He was predeceased by a son, William George Hill, Jr. Surviving; wife, Linda Wright Hill; two daughters, Mary Anne (Paul) Walton, and their sons, Paul Jr. and Edward of Grover, Tina H. Felder and her daughters, Stephanie and Haley Felder, of St. George; brother, Gene W. (Mary Lou) Hill, Homer, LA; sisters, Greta (Bert) Burriss, Sunnydale, CA and Brenda Brewer, Kansas.

Sarah James

PAWLEYS ISLAND — Sarah E. James of Lakes of Litchfield died Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Born January 8, 1914, in Buffalo Junction, VA, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Corrin and Pattie Ray Chandler Elam. Mrs. James was a graduate of Longwood College and received her Masters degree in Library Science. She taught at South Boston, VA, where she was a longtime resident and at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, VA. Mrs. James moved to Cheraw in 1980 where she was a member of First Baptist Church of Cheraw and then moved to the Lakes at Litchfield in 1999. She was a member of the South Boston O.E.S. Mrs. James was preceded in death by her husband, Harry T. James in 1990.

Surviving are son, H. Thomas James and wife, Sarah Jane of Murrells Inlet; grandchildren, Thomas Bennett James and wife, Beth, Mark Edward James and wife, Heather and Lara Lyn Yarborough and husband, Eddie and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 11 Friday in Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Boston, VA. Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Belin UMC Endowment Fund, P.O. Box 528, Murrells Inlet, SC 29567.

Christine Jones

CHESTER — Services for Christine A. Jones, 79, widow of Lonnie Jones, 11 a.m. Friday (10 a.m. visitation at Barron Funeral Home): Purity Presbyterian Church. Burial: Chester Memorial Gardens. Born in Chester to Henry and Nancy White Robinson Ashley, she died Feb. 9, 2005. Surviving: daughters, Robbie Clark, Carol Mankey, Vickie Phillips; siblings, Henry, William Ashley, Harriett Bishop, Helen Hyatt.

L.T. Kirk

ABBEVILLE — L.T. Kirk, 90, of Hwy. 72, Abbeville, husband of Claire Brooks Kirk, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at his residence. He was born in Bremen, Ga., to the late J.E. and Maude Barber Kirk. Mr. Kirk was an active member of the Congregational Holiness Church, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. After many years he retired from the Seaboard Coastline Railroad.

Surviving Mr. Kirk is his wife of the home; a son, Kenneth Kirk and his wife, Barbara, of Greenwood; two daughters, Carolyn Seagle and her husband, Scott, of Abbeville, and Betty Hughes and her husband, Joe, of Abbeville; a brother, Farlan Kirk of Atlanta, Ga.; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, February 10, 2005, at Harris Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, February 11, 2005, at the Congregational Holiness Church, conducted by the Rev. Tye Sorrow. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be grandsons, John Dansby, Ken Kirk, Steven Hughes, Joey Hughes and great-grandsons, Kasey Johnson and Jay Hughes.

The family is at the home.

Rose Jones

SUMTER — Services for Rose H. Jones, 71, widow of John Jones, 1 p.m. Friday in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory. Born in Waynesboro, Ga., to Henry and Clyde Clifton Herrington, she died Feb. 8, 2005. Surviving: children, John Jones III, Harriet Barrineau; brother, Carol Herrington; daughter-in-law, Kathy Jones; grandchildren.

Hershel Koon

IRMO — Services for Hershel Bryan Koon, 67, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 11, 2005, at St. Thomas Lutheran Church with entombment to follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, February 10, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Thomas Lutheran Church, 215 St. Thomas Church Rd., Chapin, SC 29036.

Mr. Koon died Tuesday, February 8, 2005. He was the son of the late Luther B. and Sarah Derrick Koon. He was a member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Chapin, LMM, Thursday Breakfast Club, Tuesday night Bible Study, Adult Sunday School, Evangelism Committee, and faithful supporter of the Southern Gospel Memory Singers. He had retired from the Dal-Tile Company of Columbia.

He is survived by his sisters, Betty Koon of West Columbia, Shelby Mann (Ron) of Chapin; brothers, Dean Koon (Ruth) of Lexington, Glen (Sal) Koon of Chapin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Koon.

Ethel Lee

SUMTER — Ethel Marie Simpson Lee, 68, widow of Rufus Edward Lee, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at a local nursing center.

Born in Richland County, she was the daughter of the late Horace T. Simpson and the late Onieda Campbell Simpson.

Mrs. Lee was a member of Calvary Church of the Nazarene and retired from Campbell Soup Company.

Surviving are three sons, Frederick Marion Lee and wife Terry of Sumter, H. Preston Lee and wife Kathy of Florence and Richard Edward Lee of Sumter; three brothers, Jack Ervin Simpson of Lexington, Wayne Andrew Simpson of Smyrna, Georgia and Gary Lee Simpson of Sumter; three sisters, Sarah Louise Brookshire, Margaret Avins and Dorothy Huggins all of Sumter; 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Red, Robert, Edward and Albert, and one sister, Abbie.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Friday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Williams and Rev. G. W. Harrell officiating.

Burial will follow in the Calvary Church of the Nazarene Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 3775 Lorene Drive.

Memorials may be made to the Calvary Church of the Nazarene Building Fund, 4235 Nazarene Church Rd., Sumter, SC 29154.
