BLACKVILLE — Services for Ronia “Ron” Mays, 44, 2 p.m. Saturday at Sunshine Baptist Church with burial in Sunshine Cemetery. Visitation is 7-8 p.m. Friday at Guinyard & Son’s Funeral Home. Born in Blackville to Mary Butler and the late George Washington Mays, he died Feb. 7, 2005. Surviving: loving wife, Daisey; daughters, Taisha Wright, Obsession Mays; stepson, Brandon Reed; mother; siblings.

Marjorie McCaskill

BISHOPVILLE — Funeral services for Marjorie Barnes McCaskill, age 92, widow of Willie Duncan McCaskill will be held Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at 4:00 from St. Matthews United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Directed by Norton Funeral Home, Bishopville Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday 5 to 7pm at the funeral home.

Mrs. McCaskill was born in Lee County the daughter of the late William Duncan and Mary Jane Smith Barnes. She was a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law: Mary Ann and Billy Tomlinson, Lynchburg; 2 grandchildren: Meredith Tomlinson, Rock Hill. Zan (Mary Adele) Tomlinson, Lynchburg. Memorials may be made to the St. Matthews United Methodist Church, c/o Celeste Outlaw, 2314 Bethune Highway, Bishopville, SC, 29010, or McLeod Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 East Cheves Street, Florence, SC, 29506.

Buddy Blackwood

BARNWELL — Maner Pearl “Buddy” Blackwood Jr., 69, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at his residence.

Mr. Blackwood was born in Barnwell County, the son of the late Maner P. and Elizabeth Ashley Blackwood. He was a former employee of The City of Barnwell Street Department.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Allen’s Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Farrell Ray and Rev. Alfred Still officiating. Burial will follow in Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery (Airport). Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Sunday evening at Mole Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Elizabeth Grubbs Blackwood of Barnwell, S.C.; daughters, Angela B. Jennings and Frances B. Still of Barnwell, S.C., Connie B. Rowell and Dosha B. Morris of Allendale, S.C.; sons, Maner Pearl Blackwood III of Allendale, S.C., Lawrence E. Blackwood of Williston, S.C., John A. Blackwood of New Ellenton, S.C., Michael K. Blackwood and Mark T. Blackwood of Barnwell, S.C.; brothers, Jack T. Blackwood of Moncks Corner, S.C., Rubin F. Blackwood of Barnwell, S.C.; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Janice Jeanette Williams Blackwood; sister, Mary Frances B. David and brothers, James R. Blackwood and Lawrence E. Blackwood.

Donnie Brazell

GASTON — Funeral service for Mr. Donnie L. Brazell, 54, of Gaston, will be held 2 o’clock today, February 13, 2005, at Parkway Baptist Church. Officiating will be The Reverend Dennis R. Letts. Interment will follow in Old Macedonia Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, SC Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202. Shives Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Brazell died Friday, February 11, 2005. Born in Columbia, he was a son of Effie Brazell Tucker and the late John Wesley Brazell and the stepson of Vern Tucker. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict where he was with the Green Beret. Mr. Brazell was the owner/operator of Donnie Brazell & Son Construction Company until his retirement. He was a former Scout Master of Troop #357 working with them for many years.

Survivors include: his mother, his wife, Marlene Kifer Brazell, son, Randall Brazell, daughter, Diana Brazell Sightler, stepdaughter, Ellie Mae Kifer, grandson, Seth Sightler, brother, Jack Brazell, sisters, Libby Fisher, Sandi Brazell, Terri Marshall, Ellen Hoffman, Kelly Cowell, Beth Herman and 36 nieces and nephews loved ones and friends.

Rev. Effie Davis

BROOKLYN — Services for Rev. Effie Lou Gibson Davis, 92, will be held at 11 p.m. Monday at Mt. Olive AME Church with burial in Swansea Cemetery, both in Swansea, S.C. The casket will be placed in the church at noon. Visitation is 4-7 tonight at W.B. Crumel Funeral Home, North, S.C. Rev. Davis died February 7, 2005. Friends may call at 904 Harper St., Orangeburg, S.C.

Leon Dailey

COLUMBIA — Services, with full military rites, for Leon Elliott Dailey, 66, of Columbia, will be held at 2 pm Tuesday, February 15, 2005, in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, officiated by the Navy Chaplain and Rev. Justin Smith. Entombment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 7-9 pm Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 55.

Mr. Dailey died Friday, February 11, 2005. Born May 10, 1938, in Columbia, he was the only son of the late Walter H. and Ethel Coleman Dailey. Mr. Dailey had retired from the U.S. Navy after more than twenty years of service. He spent three years in Greece, three years in Morocco, Africa, two years in Okinawa, one year in Yokosuka, Japan, three months in Vietnam, three years each in Portsmouth, VA, and Mobile, AL, four years on sea duty aboard two ships, and two years in Columbia before retiring. Mr. Dailey was also retired from Dorns VA Hospital after twenty years in the food service supply section. He was a post commander of American Legion Post 55, past adjutant, past 1st vice commander historian and service officer. At the time of his death, Mr. Dailey was the active correspondent with the 40 + 8 Vorture 1025, a branch of the Elite American Legion. His education included two Associate Degrees in Business and Accounting from Midlands Tech, and he graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1957.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Yoneko Dailey of Columbia; sons, Lorin Dailey (Jocelyn) of Jersey City, NJ, Lloyd Dailey of Columbia; daughters, Karina Bellinger (Kevin), Darlene LeBlanc (Gene) all of Metairie, LA; sisters, Betty David of Mexico, MO, Nancy Rabon of Cayce, Edith Jacobs, and Oveta Holloway, both of Lexington; and six grandchildren.

Mr. Dailey was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Wilson.

Roger Davis Sr.

HARTSVILLE — Services for Roger Davis, Sr., 60, will be 7 p.m. Monday at Norton Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation is 2 hours prior to service. Surviving: wife, Cheryl Davis, children, Patricia Alexander, Roger Davis, Jr., brother, Major Davis, loved as a brother and sister, Lavan and Pat Hewitt, stepsons, Eric, Kevin, Christopher Jennings, Bryan Sanders, 2 grandchildren, 14 stepgrandchildren.

Wendell Duffey

BARNWELL — Services for Wendell Tracy Duffey, 68, will be held at four p.m. Sunday, February 13, 2005, at Folk Funeral Home Chapel, Williston. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Mr. Duffey died Friday. Survivors include his wife, Lena Abney Duffey; children, Derek, Kerry and Darin Duffey, Wanda and Chuck Owens; sister, Shirley Bearden Davis; brother, Chris Duffey; 11 grandchildren.

Maj. Gordon Holscher

COLUMBIA — Service with military honors for Major Gordon Harold Holscher, U.S. Army (Ret.), 85, will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ the King Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 9161, Columbia, S.C. 29290-9161 or to Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, S.C. 29605. Visitation will be Monday 5-7 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Major Holscher, husband of the late Jemima Parker Holscher, died Friday, February 11, 2005. Born in Robinsdale, Minn., he was the son of the late John Leo and Ella Swanson Holscher. Retired after twenty-eight years in the U.S. Army, he was awarded the Purple Heart, having served during WW II and the Korean War.

Major Holscher was a fifty-year member of Ft. Jackson Masonic Lodge #374, Jamil Shrine Temple and Scottish Rite. A recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, he was a Boy Scout leader and coached Little League Baseball. He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church and a coin collector.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Gordon H., II and Patricia Holscher of Columbia; granddaughters and their husbands, Jill and Jamey Stancell of Lexington and Jacqueline and Derek Snipes of Dillon; and great-grandchildren, Eryn Snipes, Jeremy Snipes and Katie Stancell; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by son, Timothy Parker Holscher.

Major Holscher loved people and was a friend to everyone.

Charles Hurlburt Jr.

COLUMBIA — A memorial service for Charles Edward Hurlburt, Jr., 62, will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Visitation will be Monday 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Hurlburt died Saturday, February 12, 2005. Born in Manchester, Conn., he was the son of the late Charles Edward, Sr. and Elisabeth Agnes Usher Hurlburt. A graduate of the University of Connecticut and veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he was employed by Kamatsu America International Co. of Newberry. He was a former member of Palmetto Golf Club, Woodside Plantation, and Houndslake Country Club, all of Aiken.

Surviving are his wife Ellie Hurlburt; sons and daughters-in-law, Karl and Heather Hurlburt of Wake Forest, N.C., Kurt and Melissa Hurlburt of Clinton, N.C. and Eric and Bree Maynard of Summerville; sister, Judi Hurlburt of Tulsa, Okla.; and grandchildren, Kinly, Matthew, K.J., Evie, Payden and Maddie.

The family would like to thank Dr. Tripp Jones and staff at S.C. Oncology and the 8th Floor Oncology staff at Lexington Medical Center for their many acts of kindness.

Weat Mattis

LUGOFF — Services for Weat Carl “Matty” Mattis, 85, will be held Tuesday, February 15, 2005, at 4 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church with committal to follow in Grace Episcopal Church Columbarium. The Reverend Harry Lawhon will officiate. Flowers accepted, donations preferred to Grace Episcopal Church, 1315 Lyttleton Street, Camden, SC 29020.

Mr. Mattis died Saturday, February 12, 2005. Born in Plains, Pa., he was the son of the late Julian Matukaitis and Victoria Pariulis Matukaitis. Mr. Mattis had retired from the DuPont Company and was a graduate of Bucknell University. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, having served in World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Dale McCoy Mattis; sons, W.A. Cannon and Jack E. Cannon, both of Columbia, Chester M. Cannon of Camden, Weat Carl Mattis Jr. of Charlotte, and John R. Mattis of Lugoff; daughters, Carlotta Daniels of Columbia, Melodie Moshure of St. Louis, MO, and Victoria Corona of Houston, TX; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
