Fred Matthews

HANAHAN — Fred James Matthews of Hanahan, died 6:02 a.m. Saturday, February 12, 2005, at a local hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, February 14th, 2005 in Highland Park Baptist Church - 6211 Murray Dr., Hanahan, SC 29406. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. Friends are invited to visit with the family between 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. on Monday at the church.

Fred James Matthews was born in Effingham, South Carolina, January 7, 1922, son of Ervin Luther Matthews and Annie Filyaw Matthews. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Virginia Amerson Matthews from Hanahan, South Carolina; two children, one daughter, Amanda Gail Matthews from Hanahan, South Carolina, and one son, Dr. Fred J. Matthews, Jr. (Martha Christian, wife) from Clarksville, Tennessee, one granddaughter, Victoria Christian Matthews from Clarksville, Tennessee; two brothers, Luther Ervin Matthews (Mattie Mae, wife) from Timmonsville, South Carolina, and Don Matthews (Sylvia, wife) from Warner Robbins, Georgia, and three sisters, Gladys Singletary (Charlie, husband), Doris Timmons (John, husband), both from Timmonsville, South Carolina, and Annie Jo Skipper (Fred, husband) from Wilmington, North Carolina.

Mr. Matthews was a heavy equipment mechanic/foreman at Charleston Naval Shipyard and the Army Depot, retiring from the shipyard in October 1980 after which he continued restoring cars and helping neighbors and friends with daily needs. He was an active member of Highland Park Baptist Church for 44 years, The Elks Club (Charleston), and a devoted square dancer with the Harmony Squares.

Flowers are accepted or memorial contributions may be made to: Leukemia-Lymphoma Society - 310 Broad St., Charleston, SC, 29401 in his honor. Arrangements by Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, North Charleston.

Hilda Kelly

COLUMBIA — Graveside service for Mrs. Hilda Daniels Kelly, 57, of Columbia, will be held 1 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, February 15, 2005, at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Officiating will be The Reverend Charles McLendon. The family will receive friends from 10 until 12 o’clock at Shives Funeral Home.

Mrs. Kelly died Wednesday, February 9, 2005. Born in Lake City, SC, she was a daughter of the late Troy C. and Addie Stephens Daniels.

Survivors include: sons, David Kelly and Kurt Kelly, both of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Rachel Kelly, Johnathan Robinson, Jordan and Savannah Kelly; brothers, Marion K. Daniels of Okeechobee, FL, Donald Daniels and Steve Daniels, both of Columbia; sister, Brooksie Bowen of Hartsville; special nieces and nephews, Susan Futrell, Debra Tyner, Ann Crowley and Lyle Brown. Mrs. Kelly was preceded in death by brothers, Ray Daniels and Henry Daniels and sisters, Ruby Millerick and Dorothy Senn.

Wade Johnston Sr.

SALUDA — Wade Frank Johnston, Sr., 69, of 158 Cold Harbor Dr., died Saturday, February 12, 2005, at Palmetto Health Richland.

Born in Richland County and a son of the late Louie E. and Annie Hayes Johnston, he was the husband of Eunice Irene Wheeler. He was a retired Trade Work Supervisor with the South Carolina Department of Mental Health and was a Mason and a Shriner.

Surviving is his wife Eunice Irene Wheeler, one son, Wade Frank Johnston, Jr. of Saluda, five daughters, Kathy Montoya, Laura Montes and Shannon Storey, all of Rock Hill, Karen Johnston and Brandy Johnston, both of Saluda; two brothers, David Allen Johnston of Lugoff and Ross Brazell of Kershaw; three sisters, Louise Herlong of Lexington, Betty Collins of Waxhaw, NC and Cinthia Adams of Columbia and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at Ramey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Eddie Bledsoe officiating. Interment will be at 4:00 PM Wednesday at Olympia Cemetery in Columbia.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 PM Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Charles Croft Jr.

SUMTER — Charles L. Croft, Jr., 71, died Saturday, February 12, 2005 at a local nursing center.

Born in Springhill Community of Lee County, he was a son of the late Charles L. Croft, Sr. and the late Edith Hatfield Croft.

He retired from Schaefer Distributing Co. and was the owner of Big Charlie’s Lawn Care. Mr. Croft served in the U.S. Army, was a Mason and a Shriner.

Survivors include five children, Terri Simmons and her husband, Julian, of Sumter, Cynthia Croft of Sumter, Charles S. “Buddy” Croft and his wife, Sherrie, of Sumter, Robby N. Croft of Columbia and Gene A. Croft and his wife, Michele, of Sumter; three brothers, David Croft and his wife, Annette of Sumter, Tim Croft of Alcolu and Mark Croft and his wife, Debbie, of Sumter; two sisters, Barbara Barwick and her husband, James and Kay Hyatt and her husband, Thomas, all of Sumter; a sister-in-law, Bobbie Croft of Sumter; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a special friend Sharon Robinson.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, James R. Croft and Marion Benjamin Croft.

Memorial services will be held at 2 P.M. Tuesday in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with Rev. Kirk Baker and Rev. Jackie Jenkins officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Monday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at 533 Georgetown Ave.

Memorials may be made to American Lung Association, 61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

Wilson Coker

KINGSTREE — Alvin Wilson Coker, 48, died Saturday in an automobile accident.

Mr. Coker was born in Florence, a son of Marian Wilson Coker, and the late Alvin Willard Coker. He was a graduate of Williamsburg Academy and Florence-Darlington Technical College and was the owner of Coker’s Building Supply in Kingstree. Mr. Coker was a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church and was an avid outdoorsman.

Surviving, in addition to his Mother of Kingstree, his wife, Elisa Evans Coker of Kingstree; children, Wil Coker and Amy Coker, both of Kingstree; sister, Becky C. (John) Plowden of Kingstree; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Elaine and Jimmy McElveen; nephews, Coker and Sam Plowden, and Jamey and Matt McElveen.

Funeral services will be 2 P.M. Monday in Kingstree United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Michael C. Bell. Burial will be in Kingstree Memorial Gardens, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Sunday at the residence. Memorials may be made to Kingstree United Methodist Church.

Carrie Burch

CAMDEN — Services with burial for Carrie Burch, 95, widow of William Burch, will be held at 3 p.m. (2 p.m. viewing) Thursday at Sanders Creek Baptist Church. Cooke Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Camden to Willie Nelson and Carrie Coote, she died February 13, 2005. Surviving: daughters, Gloria Carter, Lorraine Cordova, Marian Johnson; six grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren, 25 great-great-grandchildren.

Jean Walker

LEXINGTON — Memorial services for Jean I. Walker, 68, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 17, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Memorials may be made to Harvest Hope Food Bank, 2220 Shop Road, Columbia, SC 29201 or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 505 N. Parkway, PO Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101.

Ms. Walker died Sunday, February 13, 2005. Born in Evanston, IL, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Emily Treble Tarasiuk.

She is survived by her daughters, Kimberly K. Littrell (Brent) of Midway, KY, Cynthia F. Crow (Kevin) of Lexington; grandsons, Keller and Aaron Littrell; sister, Michele Schell (Don) of Sarasota, FL; niece, Kortney Siegert; nephew, Scott Schell.

She was preceded in death by her son, Michael R. Walker.

Joyce Hartley

MONETTA — Joyce Hartley, 48, of Monetta, died Monday, February 14, 2005. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 17, 2005, at Milton Shealy Funeral Home Chapel with interment at Mt. Ebal Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Bill Paulling officiating. Pallbearers will be Tony and Dale Shealy, Terry and Red Bedenbaugh, Greg Sides, Brian Boatwright, Carol Stone and Tim Duncan. Honorary pallbearers will be Kathleen Miller, Kathy Smith, Sylvia Stone, Carolyn Long, Walter Smith, Ron Chitty, Michael Boatwright, Jeanette Sides and Angel Shealy.

Ms. Hartley was born in Columbia to the late Curran and Evetta Caughman Hartley. She was a member of Mt. Ebal Baptist Church. She was an office manager at an accounting firm.

Surviving are her brothers and sisters-in-law, Chavis and Darlene Hartley of Monetta; Ronald “Runt” Hartley of Monetta; nephew, Brent Hartley; nieces, Rhonda James and Kipp Palmer.

Family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 16, 2005, at Milton Shealy Funeral Home, other times at the home of her brother, Ronald “Runt” Hartley in Monetta. Memorials can be made to Mt. Ebal Baptist Church, c/o Building Fund, 4360 Wire Road, Batesburg, SC 29006.

Jonathan Braddock

FLORENCE — Jonathan Conley Braddock, 25, died Monday, February 14, 2005, in a local hospital.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 16, 2005, in St. Paul United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.

He was born in Florence, SC, a son of Daniel Allen and Celeste Jarrett Braddock. He graduated from West Florence High School and was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Abby Celeste Braddock.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Courtney Sue Braddock of Florence; a brother, Daniel Allen Braddock, Jr. of Charleston; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Laverne Braddock of Hartsville, SC.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1629 W. Palmetto Street, Florence, SC 29501.
