Nelson Driggers

MCCOLL — Nelson Driggers, 68, died February 14, 2005. Service is 1 p.m. Feb. 17, 2005, at Berea United Methodist Church with burial in Adams Cemetery, Adamsville Sec. Family will receive friends at Rogers Funeral Home Wednesday night from 6 to 8 p.m. Born in Marlboro County, S.C., he was a son of Callie Locklear Driggers and the late Maston Driggers. He was a past captain of the McColl Rescue Squad, a Mason, chairman of Administrative Council at Berea Church and he retired from J.P. Stevens after 25 years.

Survivors: mother, Callie L. Driggers, McColl; wife, Gayle T. Driggers, McColl; sons, Don Allen Driggers (Lynne), McColl, Charlie Driggers (Gidget), Laurinburg, N.C.; brothers, Duane W. Driggers, McColl, Griffin Driggers, Bennettsville; sister, Hilda D. Hill, McColl; four grandchildren. Arrangements by Rogers Funeral Home.

Joseph Sweetman

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — Joseph David Sweetman, 84, of Indian Trail, N.C., died Friday, February 11, 2005, in Carolinas Medical Center in Pineville. A family graveside service will be held Wednesday, February 16, 2005, in the National Cemetery in Florence, S.C.

Mr. Sweetman was born on August 20, 1920, in Jersey City, New Jersey, son of the late George and Grace Walsh Sweetman. Mr. Sweetman retired from the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant E-8 with over 20 years of service. During his distinguished military career, he served in the Pacific Theater during WWII and earned the Bronze Star. He also served in the Korean War.

He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Don, and his wife, Alice Timmerman Sweetman. He is survived by his children, David (Donna) of Dyer, Nevada; Patty Peck (Kenny) of Winter Springs, Florida; Maureen Luke (Charlie) of Indian Trail, North Carolina; Robert (Joyce) of Liberty, South Carolina; Mark (Karen) of Sumter, South Carolina; and Karen of Travelers Rest, South Carolina. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Memorials may be sent to your American Red Cross local disaster fund.

J.D. Benson

COLUMBIA — Services for J.D. Benson, 70, of Columbia, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, officiated by Rev. David Covington. Burial will follow in Olympia Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Campbell, Freddie Campbell, Chris Rodgers, Christopher Whetstone, Dale “Possum” Brown, and Christopher Hart. Memorials may be made to Pine Bluff Baptist Church or to Carolina Children’s Home.

Mr. Benson died Sunday, February 13, 2005. Born in Horry County, he was the son of the late Charlie H. and Florie Skipper Benson. He attended Christian Outreach Center and Pine Bluff Baptist Church. Mr. Benson had retired from Campbell’s Farms.

Surviving are his wife, Ina J. Benson of Columbia; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia Ann and Donald Boulware of Lexington, Elizabeth Diane and William Stabler of Columbia, Sandy Marie Chavis and Todd Cook of West Columbia; sisters and brother-in-law, Lucille B. and Harvey Campbell of Columbia, Betty B. Rodgers of Saluda; brother and sister-in-law, Aubry and Reba Benson of Aynor; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Mr. Benson was preceded in death by his sister, Hattie Bernice Churchwell; and his brother, Jimmy R. Benson.

Harvey Wilson

COLUMBIA — Services for Harvey Lee Wilson will be held at 1 p.m. (viewing noon) Tuesday at New Hope Baptist Church with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel. He died Feb. 9, 2005. Surviving are wife, Elaine Wilson; sons, Harvey Wright, Whitney Wilson; daughters, Adrian Miller, Saron Wilson; sisters, Mary Holloway, Margaret Lyons.

W. Odell Venters

JOHNSONVILLE — Mr. W. Odell Venters, 87, The Honorable Retired State House Representative, Husband of Dorothy G. Venters, died Sunday.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Hemingway, S.C. With burial following at the Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery. His family will receive friends form 6:00-8:00 Monday at the Morris Funeral Home.

Mr. Venters was born in Johnsonville, a son of Willie David and Lizzie Abrams Venters. He was a member of Johnsonville United Methodist Church and was the retired owner of Venters’ Department Store and Venters’ Real Estate. He served in the South Carolina House of Representatives District #65 for 18 years, Johnsonville City Council from 1950-55, and Mayor of Johnsonville Masonic Lodge #365.

Survivors include his wife of home, Dorothy G. Venters, his daughter Nella Ray Stone, his granddaughters: Donnell (Brad) Mace, Robin Morris, both of Johnsonville, and Ninita Powell of Hemingway. Step daughters, Linda Calcutt of Johnsonville, and Joyce (Jerry) Snider of La Fayette Georgia and niece, Margaret Cantey of Lake City. Great Grandchildren: Annsley O’Dell Mace, Boone Mace, Shayla Morris all of Johnsonville, Chad Powell and Jon Curtis Powell of Hemingway.

Memorials may be made to Johnsonville Rescue Squad, 213 East Broadway Johnsonville, S.C. 29555.

Ellis White Sr.

LYNCHBURG — Services with burial for Ellis White Sr. will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. John UMC. Viewing Monday at Samuel's and Richardson Funeral Home, Lake City. Martin Funeral Home, Estill, is in charge. Born in Lynchburg to Ivory and Liza Scott White, he died Feb. 10, 2005. Surviving are wife, Robell Wilson White; children, Ellis White Jr., Tonya Burgess; three grandchildren; two siblings; others.

Leroy Talley

UNION — Services with burial for Leroy “Buck Shot” Talley, 62, are 3 p.m. (viewing 2 p.m.) Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Union Co. to Saul and Mandania Talley, he died Feb. 11, 2005. Surviving: wife, Ida Talley; children, Danan, Lateefah Talley, Ernest Jeffries, Anthony Woodson, Nicole Brandon, Tara Dean, Brenda Foster; 11 siblings; 11 grandchildren.

Hoyt Morris

NORWAY — Hoyt E. Morris, 89, of 498 Judyville Road, Norway, SC, widower of Margaret Bowers Morris, died Saturday, February 12, 2005 at the Bamberg Hospital.

Mr. Morris was born on August 7, 1915 in Newberry, a son of the late B. Joe and Mary Cotney Morris. He was a retired employee of Joanna Mills and a member of Colony Lutheran Church.

Mr. Morris is survived by a daughter, Betty Jean Brunson of Norway; two sons Max E. Morris of Myrtle Beach and James R. Morris of Leavenworth, KS; a sister, Azilee Smith of Newberry; a brother, Joe E. Morris of Columbia; thirteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Jerry Trantham. Interment will be in Colony Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P. M. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Memorials may be to Colony Lutheran Church, 48 Colony Church Road, Newberry, SC 29108.

Robert Templin

GREENWOOD — Robert LeRoy Templin, 86, resident of 229 Autumn Trace, husband of Lalla Green Templin, died February 13, 2005 at the Anderson Area Medical Center. Born in Muncie, Indiana, March 23, 1918, he was a son of the late LeRoy Edgar and Sarah Davisson Templin.

Mr. Templin was educated in the Muncie public schools and attended Ball State Teacher’s College. He proudly served his country and was wounded in action in September of 1944 at Mont Toulon, France while serving as a captain in the 80th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. He was an insurance agent for many years after becoming a resident of Camden and later became general manager of the Camden Y.M.C.A.

Mr. Templin served his community and church in numerous capacities throughout the majority of his adult life in Camden and later in Columbia and Greenwood. While in Camden he served as President of the Camden Jaycees and as Chairman of the Camden Civil Defense Council. He was also a member and served on the Board of Directors of the Camden Kiwanis Club and also served on the Board of Directors of the Camden Y.M.C.A. He was a member of Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School teacher, Chairman of the Permanent Building Committee and as Vice Chairman of the Board of Stewards. After becoming a resident of Columbia he was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church where he continued to teach in the Sunday school department. After moving to Greenwood in 2000, he became a member of Greenwood First Presbyterian Church.

Surviving in addition to his beloved wife are a daughter, Mary Anne T. Wilson and son-in-law, Richard W. Wilson of Greenwood; a son, Robert Davisson Templin and daughter-in-law, Harriett W. Templin of Westminster; four grandchildren, Dr. Ben T. Rigby and wife Jennifer Rigby, Betsey Blimline and husband, Richard Blimline, Dave Templin and Meg Templin and several nieces and nephews who were very dear to him and his honorary adopted children, Frank and Dorothy Heckendorn.

Cryptside services will be conducted at Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Columbia at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. George Wilson officiating.

Pallbearers will be Dave Watson, Frank Heckendorn, Robert Davisson Templin, Jr., Ben Rigby, Richard W. Wilson, Jr. and Richard Blimline.

The body is at Blyth Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Monday evening.

The family is at the home of Mary Anne and Richard Wilson, 226 Deer Run Lane in Lodge Grounds.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to a Y.M.C.A. of one’s choice.

Virginia Stooksberry

BEAUFORT — A graveside service for Virginia Marie Stooksberry, 69, is 4 p.m. today in Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah. Anderson Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Flushing, Queens, N.Y. to Henry and Mary Lombardi Stroh, she died Feb. 12, 2005. Surviving are husband, Walter Stooksberry; children, Brian, Bruce, Brad Wolff, John, Stephen Wollwerth, Philip Stooksberry, Robin McKenna; 14 grandchildren.
