Vera Mears

BLACKVILLE — Services for Vera Estelle Fickling Mears will be held three p.m. Friday, February 18, 2005, at the Blackville First Baptist Church with burial in the Blackville Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Folk Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, 803-266-3434. Memorials may be made to the Blackville Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 365, Blackville SC 29817 or the Blackville First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 217, in Blackville.

Mrs. Mears, 87, widow of Lansing Gregg Mears, died Tuesday. Born in Bamberg, she was the daughter of the late James Harrison Fickling, Sr. and Vera Estelle Jordan Fickling. She graduated from Lodge High School as valedictorian of her class. Mrs. Mears was a member of the Blackville First Baptist Church, Ruth Sunday School Class and the Mission Action Group.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Emily M. and Emmett S. Patterson of Wadesboro, N.C., Judith M. and Butch Spell of Denmark; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, James Gregg Mears and brother, James Harrison Fickling, Jr.

Robert Simmons Sr.

COLUMBIA — Services for Robert Simmons Sr., 111, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Clement Road Church of God with burial in Serenity Memorial Gardens. Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Columbia in 1890 to Jessie Bell Simmons, he died February 13, 2005. Surviving are son, Robert Simmons Jr.; grandchildren; nephews and nieces.

Alice Hendrix

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Alice Boatwright Hendrix, 83, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 18, 2005, at the First Church of the Nazarene. The Rev. Darryl Bogatay will officiate, with burial in Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Thursday, February 17, 2005, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hendrix, widow of Franklin Wallace Hendrix, died Tuesday, February 15, 2005. Born in Chesterfield, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Frank Hunley and Nancy Davis Boatwright. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, taught Sunday School for many years, and helped provide meals for families in need. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell L. and Henrietta Hendrix of Hartsville, S.C., Larry E. and Eva Hendrix of Cheraw, S.C.; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and William L. Jeffords of Darlington, S.C., Gail “Susie” and Dean Sellers of Hartsville, S.C., Joyce Lovato of Charleston, S.C.; sister, Ophelia Simpson of Patrick, S.C.; brother, James Olin Boatwright of Patrick, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.

Luther Peavy

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Luther Peavy, age 77, who died Feb. 16 will be held Friday at 4 from the First Church of The Nazarene. Revs. Darryl Bogatay, John Griggs, Gregg Griffin and Jimmy Peavy will officiate. Burial will be in New Market Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be Thursday 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Peavy was born in Richmond Co., N.C., a son of the late Kenneth and Elizabeth Roscoe Peavy. He was a member of The First Church of The Nazarene, owned and operated Peavy’s Piano Service for over 40 years and had retired from Sara Lee Hoisery. Surviving are his wife: Juanita Lane Peavy, daughter: Daphine Peavy, Sons: Jimmy (Renee) Peavy, Steve (Deborah L.) Peavy, Gene (Deborah) Peavy, all of Hartsville; grandsons: Jay, Matthew, Will, Joey, Brandon, Devin, Nicholas, Macray Peavy and Chuck and Michael Beasley, all who will serve as pallbearers, 2 great-grandchildren; special niece: Carla Davis Benton, Hartsville; He was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 2 sisters: Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506 or First Church of the Nazarene, 1909 West BoBo Newsom Hwy, Hartsville, SC 29550.

Brodie Hall

NEW HOLLAND — Mr. Brodie Hall, 83, entered into rest Tuesday, February 15th, 2005.

Mr. Hall was born in Aiken County. He was the son of the late Henry and Lizzie Hutto Hall and was also preceded in death by grandson Brodie Scott Reynolds. Mr. Hall was a member of Wagener United Methodist Church where he actively served on many committees. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. Mr.Hall was a carpenter and taught in Aiken County Public Schools for twenty years.

Mr. Hall is survived by his wife, Margie Gantt Hall, twin daughters, Linda H. Brazell and Brenda H. Reynolds, both of Lexington and daughter, Sue H. Whisenant, grandchildren, Ronnie Brazell, Mike Brazell, Steve Lucas, Eddie Brazell, Brent Reynolds, Michael Whisenant, Jr. and Ashley Whisenant, great-grandsons, Cameron, Hunter and Braxton Brazell, Ren Lucas and great-daughter, Lauren Lucas on the way.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 18th at 3 p.m. at the Wagener United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kristen Richardson-Frick officiating. Active pallbearers will be the grandsons and great grandson. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. John Bradley, Dr. Bill Gallman, Warren Whitson, Andy Reeves, Jim Frazier and Lyndon Carey. Mr. Hall will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Wagener Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, February 17th, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wagener Chapel of Blizzard Funeral Home, 163 Main St., South (803) 564-5333. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to the Wagener United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 265, Wagener, SC 29164.

Ric Norton

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Richard “Ric” Ravenel Norton, Sr., 53, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 18, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Milton Frazier will officiate, with burial in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, February 17, 2005, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Norton died Tuesday, February 15, 2005. Born in Hartsville, S.C., he was a son of Carolyn Johnson Norton and the late Robert L. Norton. He was a resident of Fuquay Varina, N.C., and had retired from the Wake County GSA.

Surviving are his wife, Sandy Mayfield Norton of Fuquay Varina, N.C.; son, Richard R. Norton, Jr. of Tampa, FL; daughter, Carol N. Beard of Inman, S.C.; mother of Hartsville, S.C.; sister, Bobi C. Norton of N. Myrtle Beach, S.C.; grandsons, Shuler Bentley and Jake Bentley, both of Inman, S.C.; nephew, Colt Norton of N. Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two miniature Dobermans, Samson and Delilah; many loving relatives and friends.

Roger Goodman

ATLANTA — Services for Roger D. Goodman, 45, are noon Friday (viewing 11 a.m.) at Asbury UMC with burial in Goodman Cemetery. Job’s Mortuary, Sumter, S.C., is in charge. Born in Florence Co., S.C., to H. Ree McCray and Raymond Goodman Sr., adopted son of Thomas and Thelma Goodman, he died Feb. 13, 2005. Surviving: mother, H. Ree Edwards; stepmother, Hattie Goodman; 2 brothers; 2 sisters.

Flossie Hicks

LEESVILLE — Services for Flossie Woody Hicks, 86, of 176 McNeary Ferry Road, formerly of Coalwood, W.Va., will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday from Barr-Price Funeral Home, Historic B-L Chapel, with the Rev. Frank Mims officiating. Burial will follow at Ridge Crest Memorial Park. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mrs. Hicks died Tuesday. Born in Premere, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Harrison and Annie Underwood Woody. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church, a homemaker and devoted wife and mother. She was predeceased by her husband, Lonnie Hicks and daughters, Maxine Hicks, Phyllis and Barbara Randall.

Surviving are a son, Harley P. Hicks of Leesville; daughters and sons-in-law, Lois (Kenneth) Boyd of North Augusta, Violet Smith, Freda (Ott) Lester, Deborah (Kerry) Mundy, all of Leesville; loving sisters, Loretta Collins of Brimfield, Ind., Myrtle Mitchell of Lincholton, N.C., and Pauline Hortsell of Mt. Holly, N.C.; 23 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great-grandchildren.

Mary Key

BEECH ISLAND — Entered into rest Tuesday, February 15, 2005, Ms. Mary Taylor Key of Beech Island, S.C., wife of the late James W. Key and daughter of the late James J. Taylor and Mattie McManus Taylor. She is survived by a son, James “Rudy” Key of Beech Island, S.C., two daughters, Sarah Ann Livingston of Florence, S.C., and Mary Key Rye of Irmo, S.C., two sisters, Myrtle Carpenter of Graniteville, S.C., and Mildred Davis of North Augusta, S.C., seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a special friend, Clyde Lowder. She was born in Edgefield County, S.C., but had been a resident of Aiken County for many years. She had retired from Graniteville Company and was of the Baptist faith. A graveside service will be conducted Friday, February 18, 2005, at 3 p.m. in the Graniteville Cemetery with Rev. Gene Wilson officiating. The pallbearers will be Jimmy Carpenter, Earl Davis, Joe Taylor, Michael D. Livingston, Kenneth G. Rye and Robby G. Livingston. The family will receive friends at the son, Rudy’s, residence at 105 Miller Street in Beech Island, S.C., or tonight, Thursday, February 17, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Napier Funeral Home, 315 Main Street, Graniteville, S.C.

E. Gaynelle Sipes

SUMTER — Eddie Gaynelle Sipes, born February 29, 1924, died February 16, 2005, in Tuomey Hospital. She was the proud daughter of Edward Daniel and Exa Maurine Greene.

Devoted wife of 57 years to CMSgt. Richard M. Sipes (USAF Ret.), beloved mother of Suanne, Daphne, and Dolly; grandmother of Tony, Tish, Chase, Jonathan and Stephen, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, mother-in-law to her wonderful son-in-law, Tony, she was a friend to many folks and animals.

Known by her childhood friends and Texas buddies as “Tooey,” Gaynelle was quick-witted, an adventuress, storyteller extraordinaire, and self-taught artist. Gaynelle and Richard raised their family and entertained other family and friends at their second home “Oleo Acres, the Cheaper Spread” at Santee where they enjoyed the fishing, picking plums, and nature of Lake Marion.

She cherished her her Irish heritage, Texas roots, and career with the South Pacific railroad.

She was predeceased by: one grandchild, Dana Blackmon, and all her siblings, Exa, Daphne, Joanne, and Dan.

This yellow rose of Texas with a fabulous sense of humor whose gifted letter writing kept her friends and family anxiously awaiting the arrival of the letters will be deeply missed.

She is also survived by her niece, Tish Fiztsimmons, and her husband, Jim, of Glenwood, Iowa; Eddie Hite and his wife, Dina, and their daughter Kristina, of Corpus Christi, Texas ; and Bill Hite and his wife, Mitzi, and their children, Andrea and Aaron, of Highlands Ranch, Colorado.

The family requests donations in lieu of flowers to The Tuomey Hospital Foundation, 115 N. Sumter Street, Suite 120, Sumter, SC 29150-4983 or to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 4261, Pittsfield, MA 01202.

The family thanks the wonderful nursing, technical, and transport staff of 3 Surgical West at Tuomey for their loving care.

A private graveside service will be held on Friday, February 18, 2005.

The family will receive friends on Friday, February 18, 2005, from 11-1 p.m. at Bullock Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Irmo, S.C., on Saturday, February 19, 2005, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Chip Watson officiating.

Betty Strother

SEVERNA PARK, Md. — Elizabeth Anne “Betty” Kennedy Strother, 79, resident of 203 Oak Avenue, widow of John C. Strother, died February 5, 2005, in Severna Park.

Born in Sally, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Dr. George L. and Libby Tennent Kennedy. Her family later moved to Ninety Six where Dr. Kennedy was the town’s physician. Mrs. Strother attended Ninety Six High School and was a 1946 graduate of Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C.

In 1961, the family, including sons, John Jr. and Russell, relocated to Broadway, VA, where they remained until 1990. Mrs. Strother taught form 28 years at Broadway High School and served as head of the school’s business curriculum. She was active in Broadway Presbyterian Church and was an avid bridge player.

Surviving are her two sons, John Coleman Strother, Jr. of Hilton Head Island, S.C., and Navy Captain Russell T. Strother and his wife, Beth of Severna Park, Maryland, and their children, Laura, Dylan and Mark; a sister, Becky and husband, William A. “Bill” McDaniel of Ninety Six; a brother, Dr. Edward Kennedy and wife, Maureen of Anderson, S.C.; also a sister-in-law, Mrs. George L. “Lizelle” Kennedy, Jr. of Ninety Six, S.C.

Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 19, 2005, at the Ninety Six First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Rodney Foster officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends in the church social hall immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ninety Six First Presbyterian Church, 120 Cambridge Street N., Ninety Six, SC 29666.

Joyce Cribb

COLUMBIA — Joyce Wolfe Cribb passed away on Wednesday, February 16, 2005, at Lexington Medical Center. Born in Florence, South Carolina April 5, 1936, to the late Thomas E. and Ruth Odom Wolfe. She was a graduate of McClenaghan High School, earned a BS degree at Columbia College, a Master’s degree from the University of South Carolina and had completed all work on her Doctorate, except for her thesis, when she became ill.

She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and a dedicated teacher at Brookland Cayce High School for 32 years. She was twice named Teacher of the Year; was a recipient of the Faculty/Student Service Award; and was inducted into the Brookland Cayce High School Educator Hall of Fame on February 1, of this year.

She served as the school’s representative on the Lexington District II Superintendent’s Council; a State Department of Education consultant on book selections; as advisor for the Future Business Leaders of America organization; coordinated the Student Work Program; and was longtime business manager of the student yearbook, The Bearcat. She was also a member of the national and South Carolina Education Associations and a member of the Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International, an honorary teacher society.

She is survived by her husband of forty-seven years, R.L. “Larry” Cribb; daughters, Sharon Cribb and Laura Brewer; granddaughters, Rachael Ehlenbach, Courtney and Allison Clemmer, all of Columbia. She is also survived by her brother, Thomas Wolfe of Garden City; sisters, Shirley Cockfield of Camden and Ann Ayres of Florence. She was predeceased by brother, Robert Wolfe.

A memorial service will be held at Virginia Wingard United Methodist Memorial Church. 1500 Broad River Road, on Sunday, February 20, 2005, at 2 p.m. A visitation will be held at the church following the service. The Reverend Robert Borom will officiate. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the church, the B.C High School Foundation, P.O. Box 2482, West Columbia, SC 29171 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Gatsie Williams

SYCAMORE — Mrs. Gatsie Lee Williams, wife of the late Hugh D. Williams, died Tuesday morning. She was 81.

Mrs. Williams was born February 26, 1923, the daughter of the late Horace Mack Bowers and Sara Artelia Terry Bowers. She had retired from the Carolina Commercial Bank and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Surviving are 2 sisters, Maxine Avant of Islandton and Doris Bishop of Ehrhardt; 1 brother, Henry Bowers of Barnwell; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home with burial following in Bethel Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 6-8 at the funeral home. Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
