AIKEN – Mr. Leonard Mitchell Quattlebaum, 51, of Northwood Dr., Aiken, died Saturday, April 2, 2005 at University Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday at Millbrook Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Tommy Pillow will officiate. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Quattlebaum, a lifelong resident of Aiken, was a CPA and the Chief Financial Officer for Tucker Oil. He was a member of the Aiken Rotary Club, a former board member of the Aiken County Habitat for Humanity, and a member of Millbrook Baptist Church.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Wanda Canipe Quattlebaum; two sons, Joshua Brandon and Matthew Garrett Quattlebaum of Columbia; and a brother, James Homer Quattlebaum, Boise, ID.

Pallbearers will be Greg Ryberg, David Tucker, Larry Goodman, Tim Dangerfield, Bob Wade and Jim Vickers.

Memorials may be directed to the Millbrook Baptist Church Building Fund, 176 East Pine Log Rd., Aiken, SC 29803

The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

EVANS – Mrs. Nellie Roe Redd, 85, of Evans, GA, died Monday, April 4, in the Univeristy Hospital Extended Care, Westwood Division, Evans.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, in the Montmorenci Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Michael Dyer will officiate.

Mrs. Redd was born in Newberry, SC to the late Samuel and Gertrude Wheeler Roe. She was a lifelong resident of Aiken, a homemaker, and a member of South Aiken Baptist Church.

Survivors include her beloved husband, Roland A. Redd; her daughter, Susan (Rev. Ken) Carvalho; Evans, two grandchildren, Jennifer (Matt) Carson and Kevin Carvalho; and two great grandchildren, Caleb Carson and Austin Greene.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Traci Greene.

MR. ALAN HOWARD MITCHELL, 70, of Club Dr., Aiken, SC, beloved husband of Janet Haviland Morris Mitchell, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. A memorial service will be held Monday at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church with The Rev. Dr. Fred W. Andrea III officiating. A native of Worcester, MA, Mr. Mitchell was a son of the late James Gordon and Dorothy Simpson Mitchell. He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a B.S. in electrical engineering. He retired from Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, CT in 1992. In 1993 he and his wife moved to Hilton Head Island, where they lived until moving to Aiken 8 weeks ago. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Douglas Gordon Mitchell, Edmonds, WA and Jonathon Edward Mitchell, Hebron, CT, a daughter, Eleanor Haviland Ouellette, Buena Vista, VA, six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Dr. Eugene F. McManus, Sr. entered into rest on April 14, 2005 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. A Christian wake and Prayer Service will be celebrated Sunday at 5:00 PM at Shellhouse Funeral Home. Friends are invited to remain after the service as the family will receive until 8:00. The mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Help of Christian Catholic Church with The Reverend C. Alexander McDonald celebrant. Final prayers and commendations will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

"Dr. Mac", as he was known by his patients, was a native of Charleston, South Carolina. Aiken soon became his home. He was the son of Joseph Cornelius and Mary Cecilia McGrane McManus.

He attended Porter Military School. He received his undergraduate degree from the College of Charleston, and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of South Carolina. After interning in St. Louis, Missouri he completed his pediatric residency at the Medical College Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina. He served in the Public Health Service in New Orleans, Louisiana and began his practice of pediatrics in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina then Winfield, Kansas before settling into his thirty-four year pediatric career in Aiken.

He was a member of the Aiken County Medical Society, the South Carolina Medical Association, the South Carolina Pediatric Society, and the South Carolina chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

In 1989 he was honored as Physician of the Year by the Aiken County Medical Association. Also in 1989 he was awarded the Volunteer Physician of the Year by the Lower Savannah Health District. This award was given to a physician who worked with the local health department over the years to provide medical service to the medically indigent. He was most proud of this award because he was able to give back to the community so much that had been given to him.

He was a parishioner of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Aiken, and a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus.

His first love was the children he treated and their parents. All who came in contact with him knew that he cared deeply for his patients and would go to great lengths to make sure they received the best of care.

He is survived by his beloved wife Margaret Hemstreet McManus; son, Eugene F. McManus, Jr., of Augusta; daughters Margaret McManus, of North Augusta and Catherine Bedenbaugh, of North Augusta; daughter-in-law, Ann Marie McManus, of Augusta; son-in-law, Stuart Bedenbaugh, of North Augusta; grandchildren Maureen, Mac, Caroline, Catherine, and Cecilia McManus, of Augusta ; and Thomas and Colleen Bedenbaugh of North Augusta; a brother, Joseph C. McManus, Jr., Mt. Pleasant.

MRS. BETTY JO “B. JAY” CHRISTOPHER, 54, of 1000 Water Oak Dr., widow of Ronald W. Christopher, died Saturday, April 16, 2005 at her residence. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 4:00 PM at Millbrook Baptist Church with The Rev. Dr. Eddie Leopard officiating. A native of Goldsboro, NC, Mrs. Christopher was a daughter of Sara Rose Strength and the late Thomas Lathel Rose. She had lived in Aiken since 1967 and was an administrative assistant for High Level Nuclear Waste Regulatory Services at WSMS, a division of The Washington Group. She was a member of Millbrook Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer Christopher Clark and her husband Richard, Jessica Christopher Cunning and her husband Brian, all of Aiken, her mother and step-father, Sara Rose and Robert Strength of Tallassee, AL, a sister, Peggy Rose Price and her husband Harman of Gilbert, two grandchildren, Emily Rose Webb and Deanna Paige Webb, a nephew, Jacob N. Smith III and a niece, Sherry Smith Wright. Honorary pallbearers will be Brian Cunning, Richard Clark, Sid Melcher, James Webb, Jacob N. Smith III and Paul Wright. AIKEN – Mrs. Edna Craig Braclay, 99, of 102 Crepe Myrtle Drive, died Wednesday, May 4, 2005 in Aiken.

Funeral services will be held in the North Apollo Presbyterian Church, North Apollo, PA. Rev. John Helgeson will officiate. Interment will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, New Kensington, PA.

The daughter of Martin Burton and Margaret Myrtilla Craig, she was born April 27, 1906 in Parkwood, Indiana County, PA. She was the oldest of eleven children.

Mrs. Barclay was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Aiken for the last 5 years. Prior to this she was a member of the Apollo United Presbyterian Church for 60 plus years, where she served on various women’s committees that support the activities of the church.

She was also a life member of the Apollo-Spring Church Sportmans Women’s Auxiliary and served as a 4H leader for a number of years.

Her husband and her operated gene and Edna’s diner for eithteen years prior to his death in 1983.

She graduated from Indian High School and attended one year of college prior to teaching grade school at a local school.

Survivors include her son, Richard E. (Eleanor M.) Barclay, Aiken; three grandchildren, Mark (Anne) Barclay, Herminie, PA, Pamela (Nelson) Johnson, Fairfax, VA, Douglas (Shirleen) Barclay, Aiken; seven great grandchildren, Mitchell Barclay, Bridgette Barclay, Rebecca Johnson, Natalie Johnson, Stephen Johnson, Matthew Barclay and Lauren Barclay; two sisters, Hazel Rhea, Punxsatawnay, PA and Ruth Redinger, Indiana, PA; and a brother, Samuel W. Craig, Tecumseh, MI.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Merle, Leroy, Preston, William, Paul, Art and Glen.

AIKEN - Mr. Joseph Benjamin Barsh, 93, of Aiken, died Monday, May 23, 2005 in the Mattie C. Hall Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday in the Shellhouse Funeral Home Chapel, Hayne Ave. Rev. Jack Hasty will officiate. Interment will follow in Bethany Cemetery.

Born in Darlington, SC to the late John Edward and Theodosia Blackmon Barsh, Mr. Barsh had been a lifelong resident of Aiken. He owned and operated Barsh Electric from 1927-1986, and retired at the age of 74. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World, and First Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of over 53 years, Dorothy Walker Barsh.

Survivors include his daughter, Carol B. (JK.) Lepp, Aiken; two sons, Fred (Janet) Pierce, Augusta, Joey (Laura) Barsh, Jr., Aiken; six grandchildren, Heather Lepp Cogdell, Ted Lepp, Terri Clark, Jimmy Pierce, Courtney Roark and Kathy Griffith; seven great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 3157, Aiken, SC 29802, or the St. John's United Methodist Church Building Fund, 104 Newberry Street, Aiken, SC 29801.

Pallbearers will be Henry P. Moseley, Dan Magness, Ed Holsenback, Bill Bentley, John Heaton and Earl Hite.
