AIKEN, SC – William Charles “Bill” Rogers, 80. of Alpine Drive, beloved husband of Mary Ruth Taylor Rogers, died Wednesday, September 7, 2005 at his residence.

A native of Detroit, MI, Mr. Rogers was a son of the late James Robert and Mildred Olive Irish Rogers. He had lived in Aiken since 1952 and was a retired operator at E. I. DuPont, Savannah River Plant. He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Aiken Masonic Lodge # 156 A&FM, Aiken County Shrine Club and Woodmen of the World. Mr. Rogers proudly served in the navy during World War II.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Dan and Bernice Churnetski Rogers of Aiken, Michael Joe and Cindy Rogers of Walterboro, SC, four grandchildren, William Edward Rogers, Alexander Martin Rogers, Tibbie Alison Mathis and George Robert Mathis IV and a great-granddaughter, Sara Happy Vereen.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home with The Rev.’s Dr. George K. Howle and M. Eugene Mullikin officiating. Interment with Masonic Rites will follow in Aiken Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Joe Messick, Dan Cherry, travis Miller, James Stamey, Bob Sharpe and Roy Starnes.

Memorial contributions may be directed to St. John’s United Methodist Church’s Building Fund or the Aiken County Shrine Club.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Friday at the funeral home.

Geneva Marshall Sayers, 87, Aiken, died September 9, 2005 at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.

Mrs. Sayers was born in Laurels Fork, VA to the late John and Lilly Branscome Marshall and had lived in Aiken since 1983, having moved from Radford, VA. She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Kate Williams Sunday School Class. She was the widow of Thomas J. Sayers, Sr.

Survivors include her son, Jack (Carol) Sayers, Aiken; two grandchildren, Michelle Ellis and Melinda Clark; and four great-grandchildren, Christopher and Danielle Ellis and Briton and Peyton Clark.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2005 at St. John’s United Methodist Church. The Rev.’s Dr. George K. Howle and M. Eugene Mullikin will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Interment will be in Sunset Cemetery, Christianburg, VA.

AIKEN, SC – MRS. ALICE R. WRIGHT, 76, of Water Oak Dr., died Friday, September 9, 2005 at her residence. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 AM from the graveside in Montmorenci First Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native of Binghampton, NY, Mrs. Wright was a daughter of the late Thomas Vincent and Helen Campbell. She moved to Aiken County 15 years ago from Atlantic City, NJ. She was a retired nurse.

Survivors include two daughters, Wendy Wright, New York, NY, Laurie Sherwood, Atlantic City, two sons, Kenneth Wright, Absencan, NJ and Carl Wright, Windsor, two sisters, Ruth Wingate, Aiken, Cathleen Buckley, Homestead, FL, two brothers, James Campbell, Windsor and Thomas Campbell, Helena, MT, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Monday at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home, 715 East Pine Log Rd., Aiken, SC.

AIKEN – Mr. Lewie Clair Asbill, 84, died Monday, September 12, 2005 in the Trinity Lutheran Home, Aiken.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday in Aiken Memorial Gardens. Reverend David Cozad will officiate.

Mr. Asbill was born in Leesville, SC to the late St. Clair and Pauline Timmerman Asbill. He moved to Aiken in 1957, and retired from E.I. DuPont at the Savannah River Plant after 30 years of service as a supervisor in Health Physics. He had attended Clemson University, and was a pilot in the Black Cat Squadron of the US Navy during WWII. He was a member of the American Legion and was a Mason. He was also a member of Ridge Spring Baptist Church.

Survivors include his daughter, Cathie (Joseph C. ‘Skip”) Brown, Aiken; two grandsons, Joseph C. “Jay” Brown, IV and Andrew Lawrence Brown; and a sister, Frances Slover, Batesburg, SC.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Spradley Asbill.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Ridge Spring Baptist Church, 108 Church Circle, Ridge Spring, SC 29129, the Ridge Spring Cemetery Fund, or the charity of one’s choice.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM this evening at the funeral home on Hayne Ave.

AIKEN, SC – MRS. ESTHER JOHNSON RICHARDSON, 89, of Day Rd., widow of Wade R. Richardson, Sr., died Sunday, September 25, 2005 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
Born in Screvin County, GA, Mrs. Richardson was a daughter of the late Elyet and Lula Bryant Johnson. She lived in Aiken all her life and was a homemaker. She was a member of Redds Branch Baptist Church and the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a very kind and generous lady, who will be missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include a son, Wade (Rosalind) Richardson, Jr., Aiken, a daughter, Esther (David) Nickerson, Jonesboro, GA, five grandchildren, Leigh Richardson Field, Evans, GA, David Nickerson, Jr., Athens, GA, Tanya Beyler, Ackworth, GA, Marcus (Michele) Nickerson, Bethlehem, GA and Toney (Bryce) Willis, Aiken, four great-grandchildren, Sloan and Cori Field and Alyssa and Andrew Beyler. She is also survived by three step-grandchildren, Allison Frierson, Aiken, Tracy Waller, Olar, SC and Ken Waller, Aiken. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Richardson was preceded in death by a grandson-in-law, Chuck Field.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 AM at Redds Branch Baptist Church with The Rev.’s Dr. Henry L. Chennault and Mark Watford officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tom Tyler, Travis Tyler, Vincent Richardson, Sonny Johnson, Charles Day and Ray Day.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Redds Branch Baptist Church’s Cemetery Fund.

Aiken, SC- Joan Beverly Hawkes Marine, 68, died Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at her residence.

Joan was born and lived in San Diego, California, prior to moving to South Carolina in 1972. She was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority at San Diego State University. She had been an active member of the Amaranth Society. In 1970, the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Diego honored Joan as "Mrs. Clairemont" in San Diego for her community service efforts. This was a prestigious award recognized by the entire community. Joan was always a "room mother" when her children were in school. She was elected the President of San Diego’s Tolar Elementary School’s PTA. Her favorite project was setting up the school's first library.

Joan joined her first General Federated Woman's Club, the Clairemont Junior Woman's Club, in San Diego and continued federated service in the Aiken Junior Woman’s Club and was a founding member of the Aiken Woman’s Club. She was awarded the first "Lifetime Membership" to Aiken Junior Woman’s Club.

In Aiken Woman’s Club, she has been an extremely active member at the local and state level. She has held almost every office and chairmanship and had been president several times in her local club. Joan’s special efforts and projects included: Chairman of the Relay for Life project, a joint project for the three GFWC clubs in Aiken. The three clubs host a booth at the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life fund raising event; Chairman of the Very Special Arts Festival. This festival offers a hands-on arts experience to hundreds of special citizens in conjunction with the Special Olympics; Chairman of the club project "Adopt-a-Hydrant" that allowed people to "adopt" a fire hydrant for a small fee. The money was used to buy blue street markers to mark the location of hydrants in the city.

She was a Boy Scout Den Mother and Brownie and Girl Scout Troop Leader. Her son went on to become an Eagle Scout, and she was active with the organization throughout his participation. She was also involved in YMCA Indian Guides.

She was active with her husband at the Aiken Community Playhouse over the past 30 years. She volunteered in the gift shop in the Aiken County Historical Museum. Joan was active in her church Circle at St. John's United Methodist Church.

She and her husband supported the City of Aiken's efforts to become an All American City by traveling with the contingent and participating in the City's presentation. She belonged to Aiken Town and Country Club as well as Aiken Newcomers Club. She was an active tennis player, avid lifelong bridge player, and enjoyed many cruises and travels with her husband and family.

Survivors include her husband, Gail H. Marine, Aiken; three children, Jeffrey E. (Lisa) Marine, Melbourne, FL, Linda (Deno) Karapatakis, Aiken and Nancy Marine, Columbia; a sister, Bonnie Mackey, El Cajon, CA; a brother, Philip Hawkes, Salem, OR and three grandchildren, Katelyn Marine, Tyler Marine and Sophie Karapatakis.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday at St. John’s United Methodist Church with The Rev. Dr. George L. Howle officiating. Burial will be private.

Friends may call at the residence, 718 Powderhouse Rd. Aiken, SC 29801.

Mr. Carroll was born in Pauls Valley, OK, he was employed with Bellsouth. He was a member of Williston Church of Christ, Telephone Pioneers, Communication Workers of America, and the Williston Masonic Lodge. He was a loving, gentle man who touched many people’s hearts and taught everyone around him the capacity to love. Mr. Carroll was preceded in death by his mother, Billie Jo Turner Carroll.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM. Tuesday at the Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Southlawn Cemetery.
