Charles Perry Powell
AIKEN, SC -- Charles Perry Powell passed away October 5, 2005 after a hard-fought battle against heart disease. He was two days short of his 69th birthday.

Charles or “Perry” (as known to his family) was born in Ayer Massachusetts and was the middle son to Harriett and Myron Powell. The early part of Perry’s life was spent traveling with his military family to far off destinations like Panama, where he caught parakeets with his brother, played with his pet spider monkey and ate exotic fruit from trees in his yard.

Perry spent the rest of his early life living with his family in Reedsville, Georgia. His high school years were spent in Massachusetts where Perry was an avid swimmer and played football for Ayer High School. After his father died at an early age, Perry became the man of the family taking care of his Mother, Brother and Sister.

After graduation, “Perry” enlisted in the Air force where he traveled the world. While stationed in Wurtsmith AFB in Oscoda, Michigan, Perry met his future wife Shirley. After marriage “Chuck” (as known by friends) and Shirley moved to Ann Arbor Michigan where they had their only son Kelly.

In Ann Arbor, Chuck worked as an electrical engineer in the space industry on projects such as the Viking and Apollo spacecraft. Chuck spent his free time with his family teaching his son his knowledge of automobiles and landscaping. Chuck spent the rest of his career working in the power industry as a controls system engineer and retired from Bechtel Corp. at the Savannah River Plant.

In his retirement Chuck spent his free time designing birdhouses, and unique gadgets. The rest of his time was spent with his wife, and friends.

Charles Powell was a loving husband, devoted father and great provider. Everyone who touched him immediately fell in love with him. Chuck is survived by his wife Shirley, a son Kelly of San Diego, CA, a brother Myron of Ayer, MA, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Barbara Schneider of Saginaw, MI, and nieces and nephews.

He was former exalted ruler of the Ann Arbor Elks Club, and active in the Ann Arbor Masonic Lodge. He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church and the Aiken Masonic Lodge # 156. He was also active with the Mended Hearts at USC-Aiken.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 3:00 PM at St. John’s United Methodist Church with The Rev.’s Dr. George K. Howle and Samuel E. Marcengill officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in Ward Hall.

AIKEN-Mary Helen Whittle Plunkett, 79, of Aiken, died October 6. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Central Baptist Church with the Reverends Louie Anderson and Jerry Tendell officiating. Interment will follow in Central Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Plunkett was a lifelong resident of Aiken, born to Crosson and Ola Garvin Whittle. She was a member of Central Baptist Church, very active with the Women Missions Union and taught Sunday School for many years.
Survivors include her loving daughter, Ann Plunkett Bisbee, Aiken; daughter-in-law, Pamela Payton Plunkett, Aiken; four grandchildren, Kimberly Fralick, Keila Johnson, Clay Plunkett, Brandi Deas; thirteen great grandchildren; one great grandchild; three sisters, Grethen Griggs, Aiken; Betty Smalley, Lexington, SC; Barbara Bentley, Aiken; two brothers, Charles Whittle, Blufton, SC; Bennie Whittle, Aiken. She was preceded in death by her husband,David Plunkett and her son, Leonard Plunkett.
Pallbearers will be, Jerry Whittle, Jerry Tindall, Douglas Whittle, Dean Whittle, Robert Clark and Harry Nix. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Ladies Adult Sunday School Class.
Memorials may be directed to Central Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 1652 Wire Rd., Aiken, SC 29805.

Kathleen Carol Stanley Phillips, 43, of Aiken, died Oct. 8, 2005, at home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Richard Swift officiating. Interment will follow at Aiken Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Phillips was born in Upper Darby, Penn., to the late Charles Dorsey Stanley and Readell Williamson Clark of Aiken. She moved to Aiken in 1965.

She is survived by two loving sons, Stanton Jay Phillips and Joseph Alan Phillips of Aiken. Other survivors include a grandchild, Nina Isabel Phillips; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Davis of Athens, Ga., and Jeanette Stanley Clark of Aiken; two brothers, Charles Quincy Stanley and Joseph Richard Osbon II of Aiken; and stepfather Joseph Richard Osbon, Sr.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Creek Church, 3001 Banks Mill Road, Aiken, 29803. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home, 715 East Pine Log Road, Aiken.

AIKEN – Mr. Claude Winston “Barney” Barnett, 85, or Westmont Drive, died Wednesday, October 12 in the Pepper Hill Nursing Facility.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday in Memorial Baptist Church. The Reverend Jim Kirk will officiate. Interment will follow in Aiken Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Barnett was born in Leighton, AL to the late Claude W. and Beulah Stone Barnett. He moved to Aiken in 1969, and worked at Ft. Gordon with the U.S. Civil Service. He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, the Harlem Masonic Lodge, and served in the US Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include his daughters, Claudia Jean B. Campion, Riverview, FL, Jeannine B. Ingram, LaFayette, GA; his son, Thomas W. Barnett, Norcross, GA; and two grandchildren, Lauren Michell Barnett and Sean Winston Barnett.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Hudnall Barnett.

AIKEN – Reverend James Thomas “Mitch” Mitchell, Sr., 70, of Mayfield Road, Aiken, died Sunday, October 16, 2005 in Aiken Regional Medical Centers.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 Am Wednesday in the Shellhouse Funeral Home Chapel, Hayne Ave. Rev. Lloyd Prince, Rev. Coile Scarborough and Rev. Mike Mitchell will officiate. Interment will be private.

Rev. Mitchell was born in Union, SC. His parents were the late Arthur Mitchell and Elsie Holland. He moved to Aiken in 1957, was a television repairman for 40 years along with working as an electronic specialist for Aiken Regional Medical Centers for 24 years before retiring. He served with the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict, served with Aiken Public Safety for three years, was a member of the American Legion Post 26, and an active member and deacon of Cornerstone Baptist Church. He presided over services each Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Home and Cumberland on the Hill. He served on the state level of the S.C. Baptist Convention as a member of the nominating committee, the executive committee for 8 years and the scholarship committee of North Greenville College. He was a faithful friend and confidant to pastors throughout the world and contributed to world missions through their endeavors

Survivors include his beloved wife of 50 years, Peggy McCall Mitchell; a daughter, Robin Leigh Mitchell (Brian Chavis), Aiken; two sons, James Thomas “Tom” (Kelly) Mitchell, Jr., Aiken and Rev. Michael Lee (Jessie) Mitchell, Lexington; his step father, Von Q. Holland, Union; three grandchildren, Christina Marie Ray, Thomas Cameron Mitchell, Leighton Ryder “Bo” Mitchell, Rebecah McManus; two great grandchildren, McKenna and Laynie Ray; three sisters, Mary Del Eubanks, Union, SC, Peggy Ann (Glenn) Willingham, Atlanta, Betty Jo (Glenn) Curtell, Greenville, NC; and two brothers, Robert A. (Joann) Mitchell, Mt. Pleasant, SC and John Wiley (Barbara) Mitchell, Elberton, GA; sisters in law, Brenda (Bill) Brown, Pat Gregory; and his brother in law and best friend, Ronald P. Gregory; and numerous nieces and nephews.

AIKEN, SC -- William (Bill) Marshall Pickett, Jr., 81, of 144 Sweetgum Lane, Aiken, S.C. , died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005, at his residence.

He was born in Canton, OH, but spent his childhood in Nashville and Madison, TN. He was predeceased by his wife, Irene DeBlasi, and by his eldest son, Stephen, who received a posthumous Bronze Star for service in the Vietnam conflict. He was the son of the late Gladys I. Pickett and the late William Marshall Pickett, Sr. of Madison, TN. He is survived by three children; Douglas Pickett, of Doylestown, PA, Christopher Pickett, of Boston, MA, and Victoria Pickett Miano, of the Bronx, NY; his brother, John. B. Picket and his sister-in-law, Carol M. Jantzen, of Aiken; 6 grandchildren; and his niece, Margaret Pickett O’Neill, of Atlanta, GA.

He grew up at his grandparent’s house and his parent’s homes in Madison, TN, and graduated from Issac Litton High School in Inglewood, TN in 1942. After joining the U.S. Air Force, he qualified as a gunnery sergeant and then received his fighter pilot “Wings” in 1945. After training in Texas and North Dakota, he mustered out in N. Y. C., and married Irene DeBlasi. He spent a year at Vanderbilt Un., Nashville TN, on the G.I. bill; but the extengencies of marriage and fatherhood caused him to join his father-in-law’s plumbing company in Jackson Heights, NY. He became a Master Plumber, and a Master Welder, and was a member of the Rockland County, NY, Plumber’s Union, Local 373. He helped construct the trans-Alaska oil pipeline in the 1950’s, and worked in constructing many new nuclear power plants in New York and New England. He lived in Miami FL., for a few years, and after returning to New York in 1960, he founded his own plumbing and construction firm. He lived and worked in greater New York City and Congers, NY, until 1989. After retirement in 1989, he moved to Aiken, SC., and built a home in Woodside Plantation, where he enjoyed golf at Woodside and other local golf courses. His was probably the only house in Woodside where the owner himself had installed all of the plumbing and heating. He was very fond of roller coasters, and had ridden all of the newest, tallest, and largest coasters on the east coast.

In 2000, at the age of 76, he returned to his first love, flying, and joined the “Trenton Flyers”, Trenton, SC, flying an “ultralight” airplane. He flew whenever weather permitted, sometimes as far as mid - Florida. The day before his untimely death, he had flown from Trenton to Augusta, GA, to attend the “Broshears Skyfest” at Daniel Field. He will be sorely missed by his family; his friends from New York, Nancy Hughes, and her children, Greg and Nancine, and Marti Feldi; Magda Newland and other Woodside neighbors, and his flying companions.

The family will receive friends at the Shellhouse Funeral Home, Hayne Ave., Aiken, from 2 PM to 4 PM, on Saturday, Oct. 22.

David was born in Clinton, TN to the late Effie Jane Lowe. He had been a lifelong resident of Aiken, and worked as a carpenter.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, Oct. 25 in Bethany Cemetery. The Reverend Jack Hasty will officiate.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Aiken to the late John and Iva Redd Taylor. She was a lifelong resident of Aiken and was a registered nurse with the National Institutes of Health. She was a member of Shaws Fork Baptist Church.

She is survived by her sisters, Mary T. Watson, Aiken, Elizabeth T. Fox, Aiken and Catherine A. Hutson, Myrtle Beach; a brother, Willis Arthur, Camden, SC; several neices and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Johnson.
