Cindy Dawson

LYNCHBURG — Cindy M. Coleman Anderson Dawson, 40, died Sunday, February 20, 2005.

Born in Timmonsville, she was a daughter of John R. Coleman and Elizabeth Geddings Coleman.

She was employed as a teacher’s aide at Cherryvale Elementary School.

Survivors besides her parents of Lynchburg include two children, Krystle Nichole Anderson and Jay Dawson of the home; two brothers, Lloyd Coleman and his wife, Connie, of Camden and John N. Coleman and his wife, Rhoda, of Turbeville; her companion, Donald Rogers of the home; two nieces; two nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert Griggs and Rev. Donnie Collins officiating.

Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery in Pleasant Grove Community.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of her parents, 2605 Shiloh-Raccoon Road, Lynchburg.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.

Evelyn Allen

SUMTER — Evelyn Coward Allen, 77, wife of Julian B. Allen, died Sunday, February 20, 2005, at her home.

Born in Ware Shoals, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late David Lee Coward and the late Ruth Taylor Coward.

Mrs. Allen was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy and received her master’s degree in Adult Education from the University of South Carolina. She was formerly employed by Sumter School District #17.

Surviving are her husband of Sumter; four daughters, Julie Allen of Sumter; Katie A. Hutchens and husband Dr. Thomas P. Hutchens of Bismarck, North Dakota, Beth A. Edwards of Sumter, and Janie A. Kirkland and husband Steve Kirkland of Chapin; six grandchildren, Lauren Edwards, Allen Edwards, Dan Hutchens, Elizabeth Hutchens, Sarah Talley and Will Talley.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Stephen Taylor officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to the Easter Seal Society, Cerebral Palsy Foundation, P.O. Box 128, Columbia, SC 29202-0128 or to Friends of the Library, in care of the Sumter County Library, 111 N. Harvin Street, Sumter, SC 29150.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad Street, Sumter, is in charge of the arrangements.

James Dabbs

CHAPIN — Memorial services for James A. Dabbs, 80, will be held 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 23, 2005, at Bethel Lutheran Church, White Rock, S.C. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice Care, 166 Stoneridge Dr., Ste. 100, Columbia, SC 29210 or Bethel Lutheran Church, PO Box 367, White Rock, SC 29177. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel is in charge.

Mr. Dabbs died Sunday, February 20, 2005. Born in Union County, S.C., he was the son of the late A.R. and Viola Turner Dabbs. He had retired from the U.S. Postal Service and was a WWII veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Margie McLendon Dabbs of Chapin; son, J. Dennis Dabbs and wife Donna of Blythewood; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Allen; three sisters; one brother; and several nieces and nephews.

Arvilder Singleton

ESTILL — Services for Arvilder Singleton, 58, will be 1 p.m. today at St. John Holy Church with burial in Second Thankful Baptist Cemetery, both in Nixville. Martin Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Hampton Co. to Sidney and Maybelle Russell Singleton, she died February 17, 2005. Surviving: siblings, Betty Best, Thomas, Otis, Rodell, Roosevelt and Jessie Singleton; nieces, nephews; other relatives.

Carol Altman

VARNVILLE — Mr. Carol Altman, 66, of 901 Stanley Loop Road near Varnville, died Sunday morning in the Beaufort Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Altman was born in Hampton County, July 15, 1938, a son of the late Percy and Patty Harriott Altman. He had retired after 20 years of service in the Army, having served in Vietnam and Korea, and received numerous Medals and Citations. After his retirement from the military, he worked as a Private Contractor with Sprint Phone Company in Hampton. He was a member of the Sandy Run Baptist Church.

Surviving are: his wife: Sarah Jane Stanley Altman of Varnville; two sons: Chris and wife Ellen Altman of Hampton, and Sammy Joe Altman of Varnville; one daughter: Sandra Jane Altman Cook of Varnville; three brothers: Joe Mike Altman of Brunson, J.A. Altman of Hampton, and James Altman of Florida; and one sister: LyVan Stemroos of Branchville. There are 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Sandy Run Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Paul Reid, with burial in the Sandy Run Cemetery with full military honors, directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton. Friends may call at the Chapel in Hampton from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and Wednesday until 3 p.m. when the casket will be placed in the church prior to services.

The family suggests that those who wish may send memorials to the Sandy Run Baptist Church, 2100 Sandy Run Road, Hampton, SC 29924 or to the American Cancer Society, Treasurer Hampton County Unit, P.O. Box 158, Hampton, SC 29924.

Lucille Grubbs

FORT MEADE, Fla. — Mrs. Lucille Hall Grubbs, 80, of Fort Meade, Florida, died Thursday, February 17, 2005, in Winter Haven Hospital, Winter Haven, FL, of heart failure. Born December 3, 1924, she lived most of her life in Fort Meade and was a homemaker. She was affiliated with First Baptist Church of Fort Meade. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred J. Hall and stepson, Frank Grubbs.

Survivors: son, Lloyd Hall of Fort Meade, daughter, Mrs. Sharon Bowers of Fort Meade, daughter, Mrs. Deborah Wilkinson of Bartow, FL, stepson, Jimmy Grubbs of Gilbert, S.C., sister, Hazel Price of Winter Haven, sister, Irene Johnson of Winter Haven, 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Sunday, February 20, 2005, at First Baptist Church, 307 East Broadway, Ft. Meade, with Rev. Kenny Slay officiating, and interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Meade.

McLean Funeral Home, Fort Meade, was in charge of arrangements.

Wade Ivey

KERSHAW — Services for Wade Franklin “Bud” Ivey, 69, 2 p.m. at Cauthen Funeral Hom with burial in Lancaster Memorial Park. Born in Lancaster to James and Julie S. Ivey, he died Feb. 21, 2005. Surviving: wife, Ruth Ellis Ivey; children, Clyde, Rickey Sr., Dennis Sr., Patricia, Cathy Ivey, Susie Plyler; stepdaughter, Trudy Ellis; sisters, Ruby Threatt, Lucille Chappel, Bessie Deas, Louise Faile, Mildred Burgess.

Mitchel Carlson

LEXINGTON — Services for Mitchel Thomas Carlson, 52, 3 p.m. Thursday (visitation 6-8 p.m. Wednesday) at Greenlawn Funeral Home with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Columbia. Born to Frank and Florence Carlson, he died Feb. 20, 2005. Surviving are parents; wife, Ida Carlson; children, Jennifer, Jennifer Anne, Jason Shumpert; siblings, Dorothy Livaudais, Albert, Dan, Gary Carlson; grandchildren.

Jenelle Rivers

HARDEEVILLE — Jenelle Brannon Rivers, 84, of Hardeeville, SC died Sunday, February 20, 2005 at Aiken Regional Medical Center, Aiken, SC.

Mrs. Rivers was born November 26, 1920 in Hardeeville, SC to the late George Mills Brannon and Ruth Hubbard Brannon. She was the widow of the late John David Rivers.

Mrs. Rivers was a homemaker, former employee of Holiday Wear Manufacturing Co., a member of the Hardeeville United Methodist Church and a substitute teacher at Thomas Heyward Academy.

She is survived by two sons and daughters in law; John C. Rivers (JoMarie) of Aiken, SC, and Jerry A. Rivers (Lynn) of Pooler, GA. Two sisters; Doris B. Rivers of Jacksonville, FL and Maude Montgomery of Kingstree, SC. Four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at Hardeeville United Methodist Church, Hardeeville, SC. Burial will be in St. Luke’s Cemetery, Okatie, SC. Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 22, 2005 from 6:00 til 8:00 p.m. at Sauls Funeral Home, Ridgeland, SC.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association, Research Foundation, 919 North Michigan Ave., Suite 1000, Chicago, IL 60611-1676.

Sauls Funeral Home of Ridgeland, SC is assisting the family with their arrangements.

James McCants

COLUMBIA — Services for James Brooks McCants will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday (viewing at 1 p.m.) at Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel, is in charge. Surviving are his wife, Deloris McCants; daughter, Nell; sons, Tony, Tyrone, James, Henry, and Patrick; sisters.

William Phillips

LEXINGTON — Funeral service for William Francis Phillips, 85, will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral with inurnment in the columbarium. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to York Place, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral Foundation or a charity of one’s choice. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

Mr. Phillips died Sunday, February 20, 2005. Born in Sumter on November 4, 1919, he was a son of the late Lucius Bellinger Phillips and Honoria Logan Lang “Miss Honor” Phillips. He served with the 10th Mountain Division in Italy during WW II and was awarded the Bronze Star.

Mr. Phillips was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.

Mr. Phillips was predeceased by his first wife, Iva Nell Grooms Phillips; brother, Logan Lang Phillips; and sisters, Mary P. Britton and Elizabeth P. Hair.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Elizabeth Hipp Phillips; daughters, Nancy Phillips Hughes, Frances Phillips Hoffman and Julia Phillips Gardner; sister, Honoria P. Fenstermacher; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Almerta Stewart

LYNCHBURG — Mrs. Almerta Morris Stewart, age 84, died Sunday, February 20, 2005, at her home after an illness.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, February 23, 2005, at the 1st Baptist Church of Lynchburg with burial in Lynchburg Presbyterian Church Cemetery, directed by Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at the funeral home, and at other times at 1494 S.C. Hwy. 341 South, Lynchburg, SC 29080

Mrs. Stewart was born in Clarendon County, S.C., a daughter of the late John E. Morris and Exie Baird Morris. She was a 40 year retired employee from Sonoco Products Co. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lynchburg, the Old Timers Club, the Ladies Adult Sunday School Class of the church. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chalmers Stewart, and a sister, Ruth (Willard) Bell.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara (Jack) McElveen of Lynchburg; a son, Charles “Buddy” (Shelia) Stewart of College Park, Ga.; a brother, James Thompson (Sondra) Morris of Columbia; a granddaughter, Renee (Gee) Crenshaw of Lynchburg; one great-grandson, Jason Crenshaw of Little River; two nieces, a nephew, and a special caregiver of many years, Mrs. Judy Davis.

The family request that memorials be made to the 1st Baptist Church of Lynchburg, P.O. Box 188, Lynchburg, SC 29080 or Southern Care Hospice 217 Dozier Blvd, Suite 201, Florence, SC 29501.

Dennis Robinson

COLUMBIA — Services for Mr. Dennis Robinson, 71, will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday (viewing at 12 noon) at The Greater St. Luke Baptist Church with burial in Bush River Memorial Gardens. Wake services will be held 7 p.m. this evening at Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel. Surviving are his wife, Fannie Robinson; daughter, Shirley; son, Ray; stepson; stepdaughter; sisters; brothers.

James Racine

LEXINGTON — Memorial services for James B. Racine, 36, of Lexington, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 23, 2005, in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, officiated by Rev. Dr. Donald West. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Racine died Monday, February 21, 2005. Born in Lexington, S.C., he was the son of Deborah Christine Harmon and the late James Clemson Racine. A lifetime area resident, he was employed with M.B. Kahn Construction Co., Inc.

Surviving, in addition to his mother of North, are his wife, Susan Westenfeld Racine of Lexington; sons, Shawn Racine of Lexington, Kevin Westenfeld of Leesville; and sister, Tonya Christine Edgell of North.

Douglas Scott

COLUMBIA — Private graveside services for Douglas B. Scott, 45, will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 23, 2005, in Bush River Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mr. Scott died Saturday, February 19, 2005. Born in Dayton, Ohio, he was the son of Preston L. and JoAnn Gaiser Scott. Mr. Scott was employed by Call Tech and was formerly employed by Providence Hospital Emergency Room.

He is survived by his parents; brothers, William P. and Steven C. Scott; nephew, Sean Scott.
