Cecile Shank

GREENVILLE — Cecile Johnson Shank, widow of Samuel E. Shank, died Sunday, February 20, 2005, in St. Francis Women’s Hospital.

Born in Mullins, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Frank and Sallie Moody Johnson.

Mrs. Shank was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and was employed by the Liberty Corporation.

She was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church for 40 years.

Surviving are her son, David Stuart Shank of Greenville, S.C., and sisters, Frances Lovett of Winston Salem, N.C., Margaret Miller of Columbia, S.C., Marilyn Campbell of Marion, S.C., Reba Register of Jacksonville, FL, and Marie Shank of Georgetown, S.C.

Preceding her in death, including her husband, were a sister, Janice Beauchamp and a brother, Frank Monroe Johnson, Jr.

A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday, February 23, 2005, at 2 P.M. in Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion, S.C., with the Rev. John Brearley officiating.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5 until 7 P.M. at The Mackey Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, National Chapter, 2711 Middleburg Dr., Suite 105, Columbia, SC 29205

Michael Whetstone Sr.

CHAPIN — Services for Mr. Michael Knotts Whetstone, Sr., 78, of Chapin, will be held on Wednesday, February 23rd, at 11 a.m. at Clinton Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Minister Mike Hollis will be officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, February, 22nd, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Blizzard Funeral Home, 153 Main Street, South, Wagener (803) 564-5333 is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Whetstone died on February 20th, 2005. Born in the Hollow Creek Community of Aiken County, S.C., he was the son of the late Owens Alderman and Alice Knotts Whetstone. Mr. Whetstone was a graduate of Wagener Centralized High School and a 1946 graduate of The Citadel with a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering. He was owner of Commodity Engineering Company and Mike Whetstone and Associates. He was also a real estate broker. He was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, the Friendship Class, Gamecock Club, and Brigadier Club.

Mr. Whetstone is survived by sons, Michael K. Whetstone, Jr. and Ronald O. Whetstone; daughters, Patricia W. Carter, Gayle W. Hagins, and Cynthia W. Tobin, 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; a brother, Benjamin H. Whetstone; and special friend Dorothy Whitman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Fogle Whetstone, a brother, Owens Alderman Whetstone, Jr., and a sister Celeste W. White.

Joe Springs

ROCK HILL — Services for Joe Springs, 51, brick mason, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Boyd Hill Baptist Church, where he was a member, with burial in Barber Memorial Cemetery. Visitation is 6-7 tonight at Parker Funeral Home. Born in York Co. to Connie Springs, he died Feb. 18, 2005. Surviving: children, Tomika, Antwain Patterson; siblings, Eddie Young, Robbie Hinton; 7 grandchildren.

Dixon Walters Sr.

LEESVILLE — Services for SFC Dixon Lee Walters, Sr., U.S. Army (Ret.), 68, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Beulah United Methodist Church with the Rev. Patricia Parrish officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Gene Berry, Joe Brissy, Gary Harbie, Ronnie Copley, Otis Cato and Roe Young. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Barr-Price Funeral Home, Historic B-L Chapel. Memorials may be made to Beulah United Methodist Church, 161 Beulah Church Rd., Gilbert, SC 29054.

SFC Walters (Ret.) died Sunday. Born in Erwin, NC, a son of the late William James and Eva Bruton Walters. He was member of Beulah United Methodist Church and retired from the U.S. Army as Sergeant First Class. Surviving his wife Sue Rowe Walters; son Keith Walters of Germany; daughters Jennifer Batts of NC and Connie Young of Leesville; brother, Bill Walters of VA; 7 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son Capt. Dixon L. Walters, Jr. The family would like to express its thanks to Hospice, S.C. Oncology Associates, Lexington Medical Center and their Nursing Staff.

Hugh Smith Jr.

AIKEN — Mr. Hugh E. Smith, Jr., 53, of Woodbridge Dr., husband of Kim O’Quinn Smith, died Sunday, February 20, 2005, in Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home. A native of Charleston, S.C., Mr. Smith was a son of Dr. and Mrs. Hugh E. Smith, Sr. He moved to Aiken 15 years ago from Columbia. Mr. Smith worked as a paramedic with the Orangeburg Fire Department from 1975 to 1981, and during that time received over six awards for heroism including State Fireman of the Year and the 1978 and 1980 National Heroism and Community Service Award by Firehouse Magazine for lifesaving actions and outstanding performance on duty. He was also a former Deputy Coroner with the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office. Hugh was employed as a photographer at the Savannah River Site. Survivors, in addition to his wife, are his parents of Beaufort, S.C., two daughters and sons-in-law, Misty and Jeff Goldiner, Columbia, S.C., Kimberly and Tom Patterson, Mt. Pleasant, S.C., a sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Dan Raney, Lake Lure, N.C., two brothers, Jefferson H. Smith, Columbia and Brian B. Smith, Atlanta, two grandchildren, Heyden Goldiner and Reese Patterson, and an uncle, Samuel H. Meares, Fayetteville, N.C. Memorial contributions may be directed to The American Cancer Society. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service. Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home, 715 East Pine Log Rd., Aiken, SC.

Carrie Sanders

NEWBERRY — Services and burial for Carrie A. Sanders, widow of James Sanders, are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Fairview Baptist Church. F.B. Pratt & Son Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Newberry Co. to Northern and Alice C. Reid, she died Feb. 18, 2005. Surviving: daughters, Felesa, Kathy, Jacqueline Sanders; siblings, Wilhemina Rountree, Elvira McArthur, Margaret Lyles, Ellen Brooks, Northern Reid Jr.; 6 grandchildren; others.

Erlene Avant

HAMPTON — Mrs. Erlene Terry Avant, 75, of 415 Hoover St. in Hampton, died Sunday afternoon in the Hampton Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.

Born Nov. 26, 1929, in Hampton County, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Ernest Terry and Virginia Freeman Terry. She had retired as a librarian and teacher’s aide with the Hampton School District 1 and was a member of the St. Paul Primitive Baptist Church in Hampton.

She is survived by her husband: Berry H. Avant of the home; one son: Ernie W. Avant and wife Helen of Estill; one daughter: Dawn A. Winn and husband Wilber of Brunson; one sister: Lois T. Cope of Hampton; four grandchildren: Jacob M. Winn and Meredith L. Winn, both of Brunson and Jordan A. Avant and Abby Avant, both of Estill.

Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Rivers Cemetery, conducted by Elder Robert Dobson and Elder Terrell Harvey and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton.

Friends may call at the chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton from 6 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday and until the hour of services on Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to: Rivers Cemetery, 1890 Pond Town Rd., Brunson, SC 29911.

Rose Dryden

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Rose Marie Dryden, 75, of Harbor Watch Drive passed away Friday, February 18, 2005, in Chesapeake.

Born in Martins Ferry, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Adam and Agnes Steklasa Kovalski. She was the widow of Cmdr. William T. Dryden, USN, and was also predeceased by her brother, Edward Kovalski. Before residing in Chesapeake, Rose and William lived throughout the world including Africa, Hawaii and the Philippines.

Survivors include her daughter, Colette R. Dryden and husband Jim Fenner of Columbia, South Carolina, and her two sons, Tom Dryden and wife Kimberly of Chesapeake and Stephen Dryden and wife Ursula also of Columbia; a sister, Lillian Haber of Highland Park, Indiana, and six grandchildren, Nicole, TJ, Bryce, Alex, Skylar and Colin.

Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

William Lofton

ALLENDALE — Services for William “Frog” Lofton, 40, of 138 Gill Road, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cave Funeral Services, Allendale, with burial in Doe Pond Cemetery. Born to Elijah and Lula Mae White Lofton, he died Feb. 16, 2005. Surviving are brothers, Richard Lofton Jr. and Gerald Lofton.

Jack Leach

HOPKINS — A graveside service for Jack Lee Leach, 78, is 11 a.m. Thursday in Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Greenlawn Funeral Home, Columbia. He died Feb. 20, 2005. He retired from the U.S. Army and Civil Service. Surviving: wife, Luciana C. Leach; children, Charles Leach, Judith Kaylor, Deborah Seeds; sister, Jo Ann Long; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren.

Vernell Johnson Sr.

ESTILL — Services with burial for Vernell Johnson Sr., 94, are 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Thankful Baptist Church. Visitation is 7-8 tonight at Garvin-Garvin Funeral Home. He died Feb. 18, 2005. Surviving are children, Dorothy Roberts, Rosezena Stafford, Corine Platts, Helen Maxwell, Vernell Jr., Herbert, Robert, James, Willie, Harry Johnson; four sisters; 45 grandchildren; 78 great and 23 great-great-grandchildren.

Helen McCausland

ROCK HILL — Mrs. Helen Gray Moss McCausland, 94, of Rock Hill died Sunday Feb. 20, 2005, at her home.

Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in York, SC, with Dr. Charles Foss officiating. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery in York.

Born in 1911 in York, SC. Mrs. McCausland was an honor graduate of Winthrop College, served for many years as assistant librarian at Rock Hill High School and a loyal Episcopalian, she was preceded in death by her husband William Ross McCausland and the sister of the late Joseph R. Moss-former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of SC.

Survivors include 2 daughters-Lucetta McCausland of Charlotte, NC, Jane McCausland of Columbia, SC, 2 grandsons.

In Lieu of flowers Memorials may be made to Hospice and Community Care, 325 S Oakland Ave Rock Hill SC 29730.

Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home is serving the McCausland family.
