Frances Abbott

COLUMBIA — Frances Grant Abbott, 60, died Monday, February 21, 2005, at her home.

Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late John E. Grant and the late Frances McLaurin Grant.

Mrs. Abbott was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Sumter and the League of Women Voters. She served as co-chairman during the formation of the Green House, home for troubled youth. She was a former teacher with Sumter School Districts Seventeen and Two, and Thomas Sumter Academy and was also formerly employed by Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance Company.

Surviving are a son, Dr. William Benjamin Abbott, III of Birmingham, Alabama; a daughter, Susan Abbott Butler and husband Joseph W. Butler of Sumter; two brothers, John E. Grant, Jr. of Columbia and Henry Grant of La Crescenta, California; and a grandchild, Joseph Collin Butler.

Private graveside services will be held in Sumter Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Zane Moore officiating.

Memorials may be made to the United Way, 215 N. Washington Street, Sumter, SC 29150 or to the National Mental Health Association, 2001 N. Beauregard St., 12th Floor, Alexandria, VA 22311.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad Street, Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.

David Cochran

SWANSEA — David W. Cochran, 28, of Swansea died February 19, 2005, in a single car accident in route to work Mr. Cochran was an Associate at Siemens VDO in Blythewood.

He is the son of Barbara (Jones) Parks of Campton, KY and Wright Cochran of Camilla, GA. Also surviving are his two brothers, Robert L. Parks II and Jason W. Cochran, sister, Leah C. Parks and stepfather, Robert L. Parks. Mr. Cochran lived for 9 years in Panama City, FL with his aunt and uncle, Jimmy and Joan Jones. Many other friends and family are not noted above, but all who knew him loved him and he will be deeply missed.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, February 24, 2005, in Blythewood, S.C., at Trinity Methodist Church at 5:30 P.M. Funeral services will be held in Panama City, FL.

Urusha Spigner

COLUMBIA — Services for Urusha Henrietta Spigner, 88, of 1903 McFadden Street, will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Northminster Presbyterian Church, with burial in Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church Cemetery, St. Matthews. Visitation will be 2 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and the family will receive friends at 6 p.m. at the Manigault-Hurley Funeral Home Chapel, 2229 Two Notch Road.

Daughter of the late J. Hemuel and Henrietta B. Spigner, she was born in Orangeburg, and died on February 21, 2005, at Columbia.

She completed high school at S.C. State College, where she received a B.A. degree. She received a Master’s degree from Hampton University, and died postgraduate study at Atlanta University, New York University, and at the University of North Dakota. She taught French and English for forty years at schools in Darlington, Rock Hill, and Columbia. In 1979, she retired from C.A. Johnson High School.

Ms. Spigner was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Adult Sunday School Program, the Tuesday Craft Class, and the Bible Study Program. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and for many years she participated in Japanese embroidery classes and taught French at the Seniors Shepherd Center.

Survivors are: nephews, Lawrence (JoAnn) Spigner, and Bernard T. (Debra) Spigner; grandnephews; grandnieces; great-grandnieces, and a great-grandnephew; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Lounza Suggs

HEMINGWAY — Services with burial for Lounza Suggs, 69, widower of Rosa Nell Lewis Suggs, are 1 p.m. Friday at Jerusalem AME Church. Green’s Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge. Born in Hemingway to Lounza and Metta Suggs, he died February 20, 2005, in Washington , D.C. Surviving: daughter, Nellie Ann Taylor; sister, Carrie Weaver; grandsons, Darrel and Ron; one great-granddaughter.

Clayton Jasak

GILBERT — Services for Deputy Clayton Jasak, 46, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 25, 2005, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church with interment to follow in Woodridge Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Mark Meyer, Jim Falls, Scott Chambliss, Don Wallace, Chuck Banghart, Johnny Goodwin, Henry Trevino and Rich Nolasco. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, February 24, 2005, with wake service at 6 p.m. at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, Attn: Liver Fund, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mr. Jasak died Monday, February 21, 2005. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of Catherine Andzelik Jasak and the late John Jasak. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.

Mr. Jasak graduated from North Allegheny High School in Pittsburgh PA in 1976. He continued his education receiving an associate’s degree from the Community College of Allegheny in 1979 and a B.A. in Criminal Justice from Duquesne University in 1982.

Mr. Jasak then went on to serve his country first in the United States Army as a Military Police Officer with service overseas in Germany from 1984 to 1986, and then as a Detective with the Defense Logistics Agency from 1986 to 1988. He was honorably discharged from the Army and had been awarded the Army Achievement Medal in both 1984 and 1985. Deputy Jasak continued to serve his country beyond military service as a federal law enforcement officer with the United States Marshal Service. He entered service as a Deputy United States Marshal in 1988 and served with honor and distinction to the end. Deputy Jasak’s seventeen years of service to the Marshal Service was highlighted with numerous awards and letters of commendation not only from the Marshals Service, but from many other law enforcement agencies as well.

Mr. Jasak not only served his country, but served his community as well. He was a Lector at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Marianne Hlister Jasak; daughters, Sarah (16) and Katelyn (13) Jasak; son Grant (11) Jasak all of Gilbert; mother, Catherine Jasak of Pittsburgh, PA

Rev. Robert Boyd Sr.

WINNSBORO — Reverend Robert L. Boyd Sr., 85, of 2195 Greenbrier/Mosseydale Road, died February 21, 2005, in Fairfield Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Fairfield County. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 25, 2005, at 3 p.m. at St. Luke Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Roy C. Jeffcoat will officiate. His parents were the late Dennis and Minnie I. Jackson Boyd. He was a veteran and had retired from Richtex Brick.

Survivors: son, Rev. Jerome Boyd, daughters, Darlene Johnson, Patricia George, Yvonne Stephen, brothers, Walter (WL), Rev. Timothy and Leon Boyd.

Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home, Winnsboro, is in charge.

Jerry Arant

LANCASTER — Services for Jerry Franklin Arant, 58, 11 a.m. Friday at Harvesttime Assembly of God Church. Burial: Lancaster Memorial Park. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home. Born in Kershaw to Woodrow and Gladys Arant, he died Feb. 22, 2005. Surviving: wife, Glenda P. Arant; children, Mark Newton, Sharon Lowery; mother; siblings, Charles, Johnny, Frank, Patty Arant, Margie Rollins.

Le’Cene Brannon

GREENVILLE — Le’Cene Corbett Brannon of Greenville, S.C., died Saturday, February 19, 2005.

Born in 1907 in Lee County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Geneva Corbett.

Mrs. Brannon was predeceased by her husband Kershaw Brannon and a daughter Sara Martha “Jo” Poole.

Surviving are a daughter, Jewell Brannon of Dallas, Texas , and two brothers, Jim Corbett and Joseph Corbett of Orangeburg, S.C. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Brannon was a retired nurse, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of Berea Friendship United Methodist Church since 1959. Prior to that date she was a member of Judson United Methodist Church.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, February 23, at 2 p.m. at Covenant United Methodist Church Chapel, Old Spartanburg Road, Greer, S.C.

Burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville, S.C.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Caring Fund, Grace Presbyterian Village, 550 E. Ann Arbor, Dallas, TX 75216 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Avenue, Fl.17 Suite 1700, Chicago, IL 60601-7633.

The family is at the home of Larry and Marilyn Boyer in Greenville, S.C.

The Howze Mortuary, Travelers Rest, is in charge of arrangements.

Ervin Bonnett Jr.

CAYCE — Services for Ervin Bonnett Jr., 53, are 2 p.m. Saturday (visitation is 2-8 p.m. Friday) at Pearson’s Funeral Home, Columbia. Burial: Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. Born to Thelma Anderson and Ervin Bonnett Sr., he died Feb. 21, 2005. Surviving are wife, Deborah Moore Bonnett; children, Daja, Kareem Bonnett; siblings, Loretta Kelly, Dorothy Atkins, Chris, Kenny Bonnett; 2 grandchildren.
