Mary Hegler

KERSHAW — Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth Sowell Hegler, 86, will be held Saturday, February 26, 2005, at 11 a.m. from the First Baptist Church. Rev. Bryant D. Fersner will officiate. Burial will follow in the Kershaw City Cemetery.

Mrs. Hegler, born in Kershaw, was the daughter of the late Jesse Horton and Sudie Ogburn Sowell. She died Wednesday, February 23, 2005. She was married to the late Theron Carter Hegler.

Mrs. Hegler taught in the public school system for 30 years, touching many lives of the children she taught. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she served as a deacon. She also served on the pulpit search committee and decorating committee. Mrs. Hegler was a Sunday School teacher, member of the WMU, the special projects committee, an officer in the Young at Heart Group, and was very active in many capacities. She also volunteered for the literacy program. She was a member of the King Alfred Garden Club and was a graduate of Winthrop College.

Surviving are three sons, Theron C. Hegler, Jr., and his wife Dale, of Isle of Palms, S.C., Rev. Jesse William Hegler, and his wife Denise, of Kershaw, and Dr. Robert Sowell Hegler, and his wife Pat, of Kershaw; six grandchildren, William Theron Hegler, and his wife Larkin, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Mary Virginia Hegler Carson, and her husband Edmund of Charleston, S.C., Anna Hegler Blackmon, and her husband, Second Lt. Justin, USMC, San Diego, Calif., Adam Jesse Hegler of Clemson, S.C., Robert Sowell Hegler, Jr., of Conway, S.C., and Carol Marie Hegler of Clemson, S.C., and a great-granddaughter, Amelia Marie Carson of Charleston, S.C. She was predeceased by a brother and a sister.

The family will receive friends, Friday, February 25, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home, 210 E. Hilton St., Kershaw.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Building Fund, Post Office Box 67, Kershaw, S.C. 29067.

Nancy Hilliard

CHERAW — A graveside service for Nancy Burr Hilliard, 85, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Old St. David's Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield. Born in Mt. Croghan to Anderson and Lena Oliver Burr, she died February 23, 2005. Surviving are children, Dewitt Hilliard, Georgia Robinson; two grandchildren; sisters, Lucy McCurry, Alma Womble.

Louise Johnson

GREELEYVILLE — Services for Louise R. Johnson, 84, widow of Hiwatha Johnson, are 2 p.m. Monday at Wilson United Methodist Church with burial in Big Spring Cemetery. Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, Kingstree, is in charge. Born to Lee and Lorine Joe, she died Feb. 22, 2005. Surviving are daughters, Wilhelmenia Sabb, Irene Johnson; 4 sisters; 5 brothers; 10 grandchildren; 24 great and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

Cassie Weathersbee

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Cassie Hendrix Weathersbee, 86, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, February 26, 2005, at Hebron United Methodist Church. The Rev. DeVere Williams will officiate with burial in the church Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday, February 25, 2005, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Weathersbee, widow of William Archie Weathersbee, died Wednesday, February 23, 2005. Born in Lee County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Julian Vanburen and Fannie Mozingo Hendrix. She was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Susan Weathersbee of Hartsville, S.C.; great-nieces, Becky Woodham of Stokes Bridge, S.C., Charlene Craven of Stokes Bridge, S.C., Darlene Watkins of Stokes Bridge, S.C. She was preceded in death by her brother, Roscoe Hendrix; sisters, Evelyn Woodham, Hannah Hendrix.

Betty Wilson

SPARTANBURG — Elizabeth Scott West Wilson (“Nana”), 81, of 213 Anita Drive, died Wednesday, February 23, 2005, at her home. She was the daughter of the late Charles Faber West, Sr. and Emma Scott West.

Survivors include her husband, James Allen Wilson, Sr. of the home; a son, James Allen Wilson, Jr. of Spartanburg; and two daughters, Sally W. Hiers of Hampton, and Libby W. Huskey of Inman.

Visitation will be 1-1:45 p.m. Friday, February 25, 2005, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to White Stone United Methodist Church Building Fund, 3306 Southport Road, Spartanburg, SC 29302.

Lynnette Saltmarsh

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Mildred Lynette Durham Saltmarsh, 85, wife of Col. Richard E. Saltmarsh, died on Wednesday, February 23, 2005, in St. Francis Nursing Center.

Lynn was an excellent student in Chester, SC. In high school she was involved in many extra curricular activities and wrote several outstanding poems. Thank to the Clark’s generosity, Lynn graduated from Winthrop College with a B.A. in English. During her college career, she was president of the Writers Club, president of the Student Council, named a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), voted most attractive and chosen May Queen for both her beauty and popularity.

She was the fifth child of Charles Anderson Durham and Carrie Belle Wooten Durham of Greenville, SC. Although her parents died when she was very young, Lynn and her sister, Lois, were blessed to be raised by Annabelle and Mathew R. Clark.

Upon graduation from college, she began teaching in Columbia, SC, where she met her future husband, Lt. Richard E. Saltmarsh. They were married at Ft. Jackson, SC, on Dec. 31, 1943. She loved children. She taught much of her married life in Boulder and Aurora, CO, as well as Midwest City, OK.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Lonis D. Smith, Vera Durham and Lois Durham Jackson and her brothers, Wideman E. Durham and Charles Truman Durham. Along with her husband, she is survived by daughter, Lois Ann Saltmarsh Shwayder and her husband, Dr. Robert Shwayder of Newport News; her granddaughter, Rebecca Lynne Shwayder of Falls Church; her sister-in-law, Ruenette Durham Truman of Columbia, SC, and brother-in-law William J. Derragish of El Paso, TX, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Weymouth Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be conducted on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Jerome Catholic Church by Rev. Joseph Majewski. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.

Rev. L.C. Sanders

COLUMBIA — Services for Reverend L.C. Sanders of Union, S.C., will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Sims Junior High School, 200 Sims Drive, Union, S.C., with burial in Memorial Union Gardens. Visitation will be held 4 p.m. Friday at Union Community Funeral Home. Palmer Memorial Chapel is in charge.

Reverend Sanders died Monday, February 21, 2005. Born in Union County, he was the son of the late John and Eliza Pruitt Sanders. He received his B.A. degree from Benedict College, where he later completed his Master of Divinity degree. He did further studies at the Union Theological Seminary in N.Y.C. He was the founder of the School of Methods of Tumbling Shoals Association, Laurens County and the Pocolet River Association, Union County, where he served as clerk (40years) and Dean of Christian Education. He served as instructor in the Congress of Christian Education of the S.C. Missionary and Baptist Convention as well as dean of Christian Education. He culminated and was the announcer of the Ministers Variety Radio Hour, WBCU. He served as pastor of Wyatt Chapel Baptist Church and St. Paul Baptist Church (18 years), Union County, Mt. Zion Baptist Church and ended his pastorate at the Springfield Baptist Church, Laurens, S.C. (34 years). He was a retired educator as well as a principal in the Union and Laurens County Schools.

Surviving are his children, John Sullivan (Marjorie), Leslie Stanley, Carolyn Loretta (Pastor O.R.) Cleveland and Pastor Reba Lee (Todd) Williams; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Edward Ginn Sr.

VARNVILLE — Mr. Edward A. (Eddie) Ginn, Sr. of 1859 Walterboro Highway in Varnville died Wednesday morning in the Hampton Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.

Born Oct. 11, 1927, in Hampton County, he was the son of the late Tompsey Ginn and Jennie Louise Ginn. He had retired after 42 years as the Chief Mechanic at Westinghouse Corporation in Hampton and was a member of Varnville First Baptist Church. He was married to the late Debbie Bennett Ginn.

He is survived by two sons: Tommy Ginn of Savannah, GA, and Eddie Ginn of Varnville; one daughter: Patricia Williams of Varnville; three brothers: Heyward Ginn and LaVon Ginn, both of Nixville and Whitney Ginn of Grays. There are three grandchildren: Jason Joshua and Jacob Ginn.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Varnville First Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Tommy Kelly and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton. Burial will follow in the Hampton Cemetery.

Friends may call at the chapel in Hampton prior to 1 p.m. on Friday when the casket will be placed in the church.

Agnes Raborn

BATESBURG — Agnes S. Raborn, 96, of Batesburg, died Wednesday, February 23, 2005.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, February 26, 2005, at Bethlehem Baptist Church with interment at Christ of Good Shepherd Mausoleum in Ridge Crest Memorial Park with Rev. Richard Ryals officiating. Pallbearers will be Eddie Berry, Wayne Buzhardt, Ashley Buzhardt, Donnie Stone, Sonny Clamp and Earl Stone. Honorary pallbearers will be Senior Adult Sunday School Class of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Mrs. Raborn was born in Batesburg, S.C., to the late Muller and Harriet Collum Sawyer. She was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class, Golden Agers and WMU all of Bethlehem Baptist Church. She loved gardening and flowers. The family extends a special thanks to 3rd floor of Lexington Medical Center, Lexington Extended Care (Camellia Court) and Heartland Hospice in West Columbia.

Surviving is her son and daughter-in-law, Rudy and Karen Raborn; daughter and son-in-law, Doretha R. and Lester Leaphart, all of Batesburg; sisters, Sallie M. Clamp of Leesville; Myrlee S. Stone of Batesburg; grandchildren, Phyllis Berry; Karen Buzhardt both of Batesburg; Jeffrey Leaphart of West Columbia; stepgrandsons, Jamie Culbreth of Delaware; Danny Culbreth of West Columbia; 5 great-grandchildren; 2 stepgreat-grandsons; 12 great-great-grandchildren; preceded in death by a sister, Eula S. Wheeler; brothers, Thomas S. and Marvin Sawyer; stepgrandson, Bryan Culbreth; great-great-granddaughter, Eli Buzhardt.

Family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, February 25, 2005, at Milton Shealy Funeral Home, other times at the home of her daughter. Memorials can be made to Bethlehem Baptist Church, c/o Building Fund, 607 Bethlehem Road, Batesburg, SC 29006.
