Louise Pettit

COLUMBIA — Memorial service for Lillian Louise Ridgeway Pettit, 89, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Shandon Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to the church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

Mrs. Pettit, wife of the late Basil Green Lee Pettit, died Thursday, February 24, 2005. Born in Wilmington, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Arthur Rudolphus and Alice Lucille Tuten Ridgeway. A local artist and art instructor, Mrs. Pettit was a registered copyist at the National Gallery of Art in Washington , D.C. She was a longtime resident of Columbia, and a member of Shandon Baptist Church.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law Louise P. and William W. Willis of Tucson, Ariz; sons Chuck Pettit of Columbia, and Nick and his wife Diane Pettit of Raleigh, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

Frances Roton

LEXINGTON — Services for Frances Sligh Roton, 80, will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2005, with interment to follow in St. Stephens’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. Officating will be Rev. Patrick Riddell and Rev. Dennis Bolton. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, February 25, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Memorials may be made to St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, 119 North Church St., Lexington, SC 29072.

Mrs. Roton widow of Clarence E. Roton died Wednesday, February 23, 2005. Born in Jalapa, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Albert A. and Mary Cromer Sligh. She was a member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Joyce and Eddie Newton of Columbia, Jean and Tommy Williamson of Leesville; granddaughter, Stephanie Newton of Columbia; grandsons and wives, Troy and Jaime Newton of Lexington, Perry and Alynda Williamson of Leesville; great-grandsons, Jacob Newton, William Williamson; and sister, Mary Elizabeth Snelgrove.

She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Vivian; brother, James A. Sligh; sisters, Sara Long and Ruth Stroud.

The family wishes to thank caregivers, Merlee Reese, Dean Brunson, and Nola Fields for their love and care.

Estelle Pringle

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Ms. Estelle “Essie” Pringle are 3 p.m. Saturday (viewing at 2 p.m.) at Red Hill Baptist Church, Gadsden with burial in the church cemetery. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Lower Richland Chapel is in charge. Surviving are her son, David Pringle, Jr.; daughters, Leola (Clayton) Harris and Gladys (Lionel) Barnes; brothers, Charles Minder and Stewart Minder; sister, Luvenia Minder; 8 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren.

JoAnn Osteen

SUMTER — Services for JoAnn Copeland Osteen, 65, 2:30 p.m. Sunday: Alice Drive Baptist Church. Burial: Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation: 4-6 p.m. Saturday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium. Born in Sumter to John Copeland and Esther Brunson Copeland Marshall, she died Feb. 23, 2005. Surviving: children, Ricky, Johnny Osteen, Sonja Curry, Ann Atkins; others.

James Powell

COLUMBIA — Services for Mr. James Powell are 3 p.m. Saturday (viewing at 2 p.m.) at The Greater St. Luke Baptist Church with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Wake services will be held 7 p.m. this evening at Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel. Surviving are his daughter, Deidre (William) Robinson; son, Attorney Johan (Kelly) Powell; mother, Mozelle Powell; sisters, Doris Howell and Alberta Ellis; brothers, Herbert (Jessie) Powell, Herman (Mariah) Powell and Roscoe Powell; grandchildren, William, Jr. and Christopher.

Lydia Warr

CONWAY — Lydia Gil Warr, widow of Tallie A. Warr, beloved mother and inspiration to family and friends, died February 23, 2005, after battling lung cancer.

Mrs. Warr received national commendations for her civil service to the United States Air Force.

She is survived by her son, Tommie Warr and wife, Becky, of Charlotte, N.C.; her daughter, Jennifer Warr Doyle and husband, Jack, of Conway, S.C.; four grandchildren, Shannon Doyle Williams, Kelly Warr, Ryan Doyle and Christopher Warr; her sister, Zenaida Gragasin and her brother, Resurrection Gil, both of Phillipine Island.

Funeral services will be noon Friday, February 25, 2005, at St. Anthony Catholic Church on Hoffmeyer Road, Florence, S.C., with visitation and blessing of the body following at Waters-Powell Funeral Home, 400 S. Dargan St., Florence. Committal service will follow in Florence National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Respite Cove, St. Joseph’s Church, 3512 Devine St., Columbia, SC 29205.
Ed Northcutt

MCBEE — Funeral services for Paul Edward “Ed” Northcutt, 84, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, February 25, 2005, at Union United Methodist Church. The Rev. Roger Dodds will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Union United Methodist Church, 4374 Union Church Road, McBee, SC 29101, or to the charity of one’s choice.

Mr. Northcutt died Wednesday, February 23, 2005. Born in Chesterfield Co., SC, he was a son of the late Lincoln Moody and Pearl Fields Northcutt. He was a member of Union United Methodist Church, served his country in the U.S. Army twice during his lifetime, and was retired from farming. He will be greatly missed by his brother who was at his side for 81 years as his faithful friend and companion. He will also be missed by his dog, Baby.

Surviving are his sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Allen Roberts of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; brother, Bishop Northcutt of McBee, SC; sister-in-law, Betty Northcutt; one nephew; 4 nieces. He was preceded in death by his brothers Ray, Babe, and Wofford Northcutt.

Ralph McFadden

SUMTER — Services for Ralph “Red” McFadden, 64, 12:30 p.m. Saturday: St. Paul UMC. Job’s Mortuary is in charge. Born in Elliott to Blossom Franklin, grandson of Ralph and Carrie Bell McFadden, he died Feb. 22, 2005. He was a good baseball player, a caring and loving person and while attending Morris College, he became interested in the ministry. Surviving: 5 sisters, including his twin, 9 brothers, aunts, uncles, etc.

Virginia Moody

HOPKINS — Funeral Services for Mrs. Virginia Evelyn Moody, 74, of Hopkins, SC, will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, February 26, 2005, at Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be sent to Ascension Hospice, P.O. Box 3077, West Columbia, SC 29171 and/or The Alzheimer’s Association, Palmetto Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202. Greenlawn Funeral Home is in charge.

Mrs. Moody died Tuesday, February 22, 2005. Born in Hampton, SC, she was the daughter of the late J.L. Padgett and Katie Winn. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church and she retired from K-Mart Department Stores.

Surviving is her husband of 58 years, Charles M. Moody, Sr. of the home; daughters, Robin Lane and her husband Larry of Hopkins, SC; sons, Charles “Chuck” Moody, Jr. and his wife Connie and David “Alan” Moody and his wife Karen both of Hopkins, SC; sisters, Lula High of Columbia, SC, and Carol Branton of Beaufort, SC; brothers, John Padgett of Varnville, SC, and Jimmy Padgett of Columbia, SC; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Alex Lundy

LEXINGTON — Mr. Alex Lundy, 34, of South Lake Drive, entered into rest Wednesday, February 23, 2005, at his residence.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 26, 2005, in the chapel of Rowland Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the memorial service.

Mr. Lundy was a native of Augusta, GA, and had lived in Lexington for the past ten years. He was a produce distributor.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Veronica and John Messmer of Columbia, SC; his father and stepmother, Chuck and Faye Lundy of Blythe, GA; two brothers, Wesley Lundy of Augusta, GA, and Eliott Gordon of Columbia, SC; three sisters, Tonya Marchese of Alpharetta, GA, Eileen Seals of Spartanburg, SC, and Joy Lundy of Blythe, GA; a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Rowland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Almeda Lofton

ALLENDALE — Services for Almeda S. Lofton, 69, widow of Norman Lofton Jr., 11 a.m. Saturday: Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness, East Barnwell. Burial: Old Bentley Cemetery, Appleton. Visitation: 6-9 tonight at M.F. Riley’s Funeral Home, Fairfax. Born in Allendale Co. to J.P. and Waterine Owens Smoak, she died Feb. 21, 2005. Surviving: brothers; children, Kathrene Lofton-Johnson Norman, Carmen Lofton.

Shellie Leroy Prophet

NORWAY — Services for Shellie Leroy Prophet, 57: 2 p.m. (viewing 1 p.m.) Saturday at Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Knotts Funeral Home, Swansea, in charge. Born in Norway to James & Viola Prophet, he died Feb. 15, 2005, in New York. Surviving: wife, Mary Prophet; children, Shronda, Simore, Tyrone; 4 grandchildren; siblings, Mary Ann, Joyce, Peggy, Loretta, Larry, James; stepmother, Bernice; 2 stepsiblings.

Dr. Harry Irwin Jr.

GREENWOOD — Dr. Harry Penrose Irwin, Jr., 83, husband of Evelyn Simpson Irwin, died February 22, 2005.

Born February 21, 1922, in Coatesville, Pennsylvania , he was a son of the late Harry Penrose Sr. and Ruth Ballentine Irwin. He received a B.A. Degree from the University of Delaware and M.Ed. and Ed.D. Degrees from Duke University. He was a retired U.S. Marine Corps veteran of WWII, earning the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

In 1962, Dr. Irwin joined the faculty of Lander College as a Department Head of Education and Director of Student Teaching. He also established the first soccer program at Lander and served as the first coach of the team.

Dr. Irwin was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and was one of the founding members and former Chairman of the South Carolina United Methodist Foundation.

Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a son, Harry Robert Irwin of Aylett, VA, three grandchildren, David Walter Irwin of Ashland, VA, James Robert Irwin of Aylett, VA, and Rebecca Lynn Irwin of Lynchburg, VA.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Main Street United Methodist Church.

Entombment will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends at the Blyth Funeral Home from 7:00 to 9:00 Friday evening.

Memorials may be made to the Dr. Harry P. Irwin Scholarship Fund, c/o Lander University Foundation, 320 Stanley Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29649, Main Street United Methodist Church, 211 N.
