Jasper Wilburn

UNION — Services and burial for Jasper Meador Wilburn, 90, WWII veteran, widow of Mildred Wilburn, 3 p.m. today: Lower Fairforest Baptist Church. S.R. Holcombe F.H. is in charge. Born in Union to C.T.S. Sr. and Mary Meador Wilburn, he died Feb. 24, 2005. Surviving: children, Carolyn Pennington, Patsy Payne, Laura Paterek, Randy Wilburn; sisters, Juanita Wilburn, Ruth Windell, Belle Kinard; grand, great-grandchildren.

William Stallworth

EFFINGHAM — William E. Stallworth, 85, of Effingham, died on February 24, 2005. He was a native of York, Alabama, and a graduate of Marion Military Institute in Marion, Alabama, from which he entered the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant in June 1941, and served in combat duty in the European Theatre as a rifle company commander. He trained and led a combat company of 197 men and 7 other officers in the invasion of Southern France and Germany until he was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge on April 1, 1945. He retired with the rank of Captain and was awarded the Silver Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart with Cluster, and Bronze Star for Valor. After the war, he became the Boy Scout Executive for the Pee Dee Area Council, BSA in Florence, serving as Chief Administrative Officer for an eleven county area. Thereafter, he was general agent for the Investment Life and Trust Company of Mullins, followed by his appointment as Military Representative for United Mutual of Omaha at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers office in Belgium. While living in Brussels, he met and married his wife Claudine, who survives. He is also survived by his son, William E. Stallworth, Jr., and his wife Vada and four grandchildren, William, III, Joanna, Rena, and Chilson, and one great-grandchild, Nina, all of Atlanta. His first wife, Margaret, predeceased him.

When he returned from Brussels, he became a financial consultant and fundraiser for such projects as the South Carolina Governor’s Mansion Foundation, and Finance Director for the campaign of Henry D. McMaster for the office of United States Senator from South Carolina. He was active in the Florence community and served as campaign chairman for three years for the United Fund of Greater Florence and later served as president for two years. He was a long time member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board on which he served as chairman for two years. He was chairman of the organizational fund campaign to establish the Boys Club of Florence and was a former board member of the Florence Family YMCA. He was a Moderator for the Florence County Council for Aging and attended the White House Forum on Aging. He served on the Mayor’s Community Relations Committee for a number of years and was a former Deacon and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Florence and later joined the Effingham Presbyterian Church. Mr. Stallworth was presented the Order of the Palmetto by Governor David Beasley in recognition for outstanding service to the State of South Carolina.

He and Claudine returned from Europe in 1980 and established their home at Domaine de Claudine, 5106 Stagecoach Road, Effingham, South Carolina, where they were renowned hosts.

Funeral services will be held in Florence National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 28, 2005, with Military Rites. The Family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the residence.

Memorials may be made to Tara Hall For Boys in Georgetown, South Carolina, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bryan Stone

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Dayton Bryan Stone, Jr., 82, of West Columbia, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 27, 2005, in State Street Baptist Church, Cayce, officiated by Rev. Dr. Pete Cassidy. Burial will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be the grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be the Fellowship Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the burial. Memorials may be made to State Street Baptist Church, Cayce or to Gideons International, 5106-B Two Notch Road, Columbia, SC 29204.

Mr. Stone died Wednesday, February 23, 2005. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Dayton Bryan Stone, Sr. and Jessie Harriett Pack Stone. Mr. Stone was a member of State Street Baptist Church, Cayce, where he was a Deacon, a Sunday School teacher, sang in the choir and men’s ensemble. He was a member of the Civitans, Gideons, American Legion Post 130, a Southern Baptist Associate Missionary to Peru, and volunteered at God’s Helping Hands. Mr. Stone served as a Naval Aviator during World War II, was a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, and a member of the National Oceanic Atmosphere Association (NOAA).

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Doris Mae Lonnegren Stone; daughters and sons-in-law, Lonne Johanna Stone and John Heath, Mary Martha Stone and Charlie Lucas; sons, Dayton Bryan and Brenda Stone, III, Randall McDuffie and Ann Stone, David Jesse and Cynthia Stone, Robert Edward and Karen Stone; sister, Joanne S. Colvin; brother, J. Wade Stone; granddaughters, Courtney Kibler, Eva Daniel, Katie Stone, Rachael Stone, Dori Lucas, Johanna Stone; grandsons, Bryan Stone, Richie Kibler, Stoney Kibler, Duffie Stone, Patrick Stone, Jesse Stone, Kyle Lucas, Pack Lucas, Chase Lucas, Rhee Stone; and great-grandchildren, Noah Hatcher, Isaac Hatcher, Walker Daniel, Emma Stone, Ian Stone and Carrie Daniel.

Mr. Stone was predeceased by brothers, Raymond C. Stone and Bruce H. Stone.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the nurses and staff at NHC for their care, and to special caregiver and pal-Teejay Logan.

Emmie Smith

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Emmie Richardson Smith will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at Cherry Grove Baptist Church. The burial will follow in the Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc., of Hartsville. Rev. E.B. Burroughs, the pastor of Cherry Grove, will officiate the service.

Mrs. Smith was born December 7, 1913, in Darlington County, South Carolina, a daughter of the late Barney and Maude Boseman Richardson. She was educated in the public schools of the county and graduated from the Hartsville Training School in 1930. She was married to the late Frank A. Smith, Sr. This union was blessed with one son, Frank A. Smith, Jr. She was a lifelong member of Cherry Grove Baptist Church.

Mrs. Smith was the owner and operator of several businesses in the Hartsville area. She and her brother operated Richardson’s Cafe during the 1940s. She also operated a nursery school in the area. Smitty’s Grill was also one of her other very successful business ventures. Mrs. Smith was a political pioneer in Hartsville and worked with the local Democratic Party registering voters during the 1950s and was an officer at Hartsville Precinct #6.

Surviving to cherish and remember the loving memories of Emmie R. Smith include her son, Frank (Laura) Smith of Charleston, SC; one sister, Carrie Johnson of Teaneck, NJ, three brothers, Burree (Caroline) Richardson of Columbia, MD, Carroll (Ester) Richardson of Ayden, NC, and Barney Richardson of Rosell, NH; her granddaughters Karen Vien and Valerie (Craig) Davis both of Charleston, SC; great grandchildren, Jonathan and Donovan; her sisters-in-law, Francena Richardson and Dorothy Richardson both of Hartsville, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and very dear friends.

Juanita Morgan

MARION — Mrs. Juanita A. Morgan, 80, died Thursday, February 24, 2005, at her residence after an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at Richardson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Goodland Swamp Cemetery, Springfield, SC, at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

Born in Richland County, Mrs. Morgan was a daughter of the late John J. Adams and Minnie Ellis Adams. She was a member of Pee Dee Southern Methodist Church. She was predeceased by a daughter, Joan Morgan Oliver.

Survivors are her husband, Rev. R. Hamilton Morgan of the home; four sons, Larry H. (Carolyn) Morgan of Orangeburg, Kenneth R. Morgan of Ladson, Rev. Robert L. (Adele) Morgan of Carthage, MD, and Rodney J. (Susan) Morgan of Lexington; one brother, Edgar Adams of Travelers Rest; one sister, Minnie A. Greene of Zazalla, TX; twenty-two grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Pee Dee Southern Methodist Church, c/o Shirley Hucks, 3215 Austin Rd., Marion, SC 29571; McLeod Hospice, 555 E. Cheves, Florence, SC 29506 or the charity of one’s choice.

Eloise Dawsey

AYNOR — Eloise Dudley Dawsey, age 86, wife of the late Edward Hiram Dawsey, died Friday, February 25, 2005, at her residence following an illness.

Surviving are two daughters, Rachel Dawsey of Aynor, Flora Mae Lawrimore and her husband, Roland of Trinity, N.C.; four sons, Sheldon Dawsey and his wife, Mary, Steve Dawsey and his wife, Beth and Derrick Dawsey and his wife, Cindy, all of Aynor, and Stan Dawsey and his wife, Sue of Lexington, S.C.; eleven grandchildren, Barry Lawrimore, Angela Lawrimore Baliff, Wendy Lawrimore Payne; Greg Dawsey, Missy Dawsey Lewis, Katy Dawsey Hucks, Brad, Ginger, Jason, Nathan and Mark Dawsey; eleven great-grandchildren; one sister, Willie Lou Bellamy and her husband, Clifton of Ellenwood, GA.

Funeral services will be held 2 P.M. Sunday from Aynor United Methodist Church.

Penny Durham

LEXINGTON — Services for Penny Stroud Durham, 67, of Lexington, will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday in Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Jeff Kersey. Burial will follow at Southland Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church or Commun-I-Care, PO Box 186, Columbia, SC 29202. Pallbearers will be Steve Ellisor, Coy Durham, Clay Poss, Reed Bennett, Ted O. McGee, III, and Robert “Tim” Campbell. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington.

Mrs. Durham died Thursday, February 24, 2005. Born in Hemmingway, SC, she was the daughter of the late Frazier C. Stroud and Alphia McKenzie Stroud Poston. She was a member of Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church. Mrs. Durham was a retired Real Estate Professional and Financial Advisor. She enjoyed cake decorating, catering, event planning, and gardening, but she mostly loved her family and friends.

Surviving are her husband, Carl M. Durham of Lexington; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra A. and Benjamin Peloso, III, of West Columbia, Susan A. and William “Ricky” R. Raines of Lexington; step-daughter, Bonnie D. Robinson of Lexington; step-son, Mac Durham of Columbia; sister, Adlaide S. Cribb of Leesville; brother, Harold K. Stroud of Alexandria, VA; four grandchildren, Benjamin “Benji” Peloso, IV, Britt Gordon Peloso, Brinklea Anne-Marie Raines, McKenzie Laura Raines; and one great-grandson, Andon William Peloso.

Sarah Mack

CAYCE — Services for Sarah Mack, 74, of Cayce, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, conducted by Rev. Bruce Garner. Burial will follow at Celestial Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mack, widow of Joseph A. Mack, died Thursday, February 24, 2005. Born in Anderson, SC, she was the daughter of the late Roy S. and Florence Prince Hamblin, and the late John Stasney.

She was a member of West Side Baptist Church, and a member of Artist Guild of Columbia.

Surviving are her daughters, Carrie Noriene Mack of West Columbia, Leta Sheppard of Gaston, and Neda Lee of Cayce; sons, George A. Mack of Cayce and Robert E. Mack of West Columbia; ten grandchildren, Jimmy, Keith, Derek, Wayne, Anthony, Stephanie, Mandy, Craig, Kimberly, and Chris; and nine great-grandchildren, Brooke, Brandon, Mitchell, Marcie, Justin, Adam, Samantha, Steven, and Auston.

Mary Jane Scherman

COLUMBIA — Services for Mary Jane Kline Scherman, 85, will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be Saturday 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Society, the American Diabetes Association, or the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Scherman, wife of the late Leo Joseph Scherman, died Thursday, February 24, 2005. Born in Dayton, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Earl and Grace Rebecca Wogoman Kline.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law Rick and Roxanne Scherman of West Columbia; a daughter and son-in-law Patricia and Tony Ivie of Gastonia, N.C.; a brother and sister-in-law Gerald and Barbara Kline of Windsor, Conn.; a sister Dorothy Janek of Chicago, Ill; and four grandchildren Stacy Jae Scherman, Carl Joseph Scherman, Lena Rebecca Ivie, and Sara Katherine Ivie.

Oragon White Sr.

ESTILL — Services for Oragon White Sr., DuPont retiree, Fairview Lodge #393 member, 2 p.m. Sunday: Mt. Pleasant AMEC, where he was a Trustee. Family hour: 7-8 tonight at Garvin-Garvin Funeral Home. Born in Hampton Co. to James and Maggie White, he died Feb. 22, 2005. Surviving: wife, Lubertha; children, Debra, Oragon Jr., William, Maurice, Michelle, Earl, Robert White, Gloria Housey; grandchildren.
