Marie Farano

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Marie Sparkman Farano, 86, will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ben Gafford will officiate with burial in Mount Tabor Cemetery, Rocky Ridge, Md. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to Kalmia Gardens, 1624 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Farano died Monday, February 28, 2005. Born in Defeated Creek, Ky., she was a daughter of the late John D. and Isabelle Frazier Sparkman. She attended St. Luke United Methodist Church. She served in the Women’s Air Corps during World War II. Most of her life was spent in Rocky Ridge, Md., and Bergen County, N.J., working as a home health care nurse.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Vern Myers of Hartsville, S.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Peg Farano of Colorado; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeanette and Jack Rippion, Nadine Morgan, Georgette Main: brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry and Olga Sparkman, Wayland and Audrey Sparkman, Carroll and Laura Sparkman, James and Barbarann Sparkman, Hughie and Mary Sparkman, Patricia Sparkman; former husband, Mario Farano of Hartsville, S.C.; grandchildren and spouses, Michelle Wrona, Angela and Derek Strickler, Betsy Myers, Chris and Stacy Myers. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Bruce Sparkman, Curtis Sparkman, Delmar Sparkman; sister, Edna Willoughby.

Edna Flynn

LANCASTER — Services with burial for Edna Elizabeth R. Flynn, 85, retired L.P.N., widow of Henry Flynn, are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Unity ARP Church, where she was a member. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home. Born in Lancaster to Cezer and Ada Steele Robinson, she died Feb. 27, 2005. Surviving: children, Grady Flynn, Margle Richburg, Nancy Watterson; brother, Sam Robinson; grand, great-grandchildren.

Fern Farley

SPRINGDALE — Services for Fern Flanary Farley, 79, will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2005, in Woodridge Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 1, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, National Parkinson’s Foundation, Inc., 1501 Northwest 9th Ave., Miami, FL 33136.

Mrs. Farley, widow of Robert G. Farley died Sunday, February 26, 2005. Born in Pikeville, KY, she was the daughter of the late Burley H. and Hazel Mathey Flanary.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Robert Shealy; son, Greg Farley; grandson and wife, Jamie and Tabitha Smith; and sister, Loraine Baker.

The family would like to give special thanks to the Providence Hospital ICU Staff for their care and compassion.

Robert Richards

COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Robert G. Richards, 86, of Columbia will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Seven Oaks Presbyterian Church with burial to follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Franklin Fant will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel is in charge.

Mr. Richards had been in declining health for several months and died Sunday morning, February 27, 2005, at the home of his daughter, Barbara Covington, where he resided for over a year.

Born in Manhattan, Ill., he was one of seven children of the late Richard and Maude Laraway Richards. After graduating from Joliet Township High School he worked as a heavy equipment operator in highway construction until the outbreak of World War II. He joined the Navy and was a member of the Seabees, putting his talents to work building roads and air strips on islands in the Pacific Theatre until the end of the war.

Following his military service he moved to Atlanta, Ga., and subsequently joined Allis-Chalmers Equipment Corporation embarking on a sales and sales management career that took him to Virginia, New York, Wisconsin and California, where he was President of California Tractor Company in Oakland California. He returned to Atlanta in 1967 and in 1969 moved to Columbia. He joined the Prudential Insurance Company of America here and worked with them almost twenty years until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Shaw Richards of Columbia; daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Stephen Brennan of Columbia; daughter, Barbara Covington of Columbia; grandson, Sean S. Brennan of Columbia; brother, Richard Richards of Norfolk, Va. Mr. Richards was predeceased by his brothers, Gordon, Frederick and Donald Richards and sisters, Helen Tea and Margaret Schoop.

The family would like to express their appreciation and deep gratitude to the caring staff at Lutheran Hospice for the support they provided during the past several months. Memorials may be made to the Seven Oaks Presbyterian Church or to Lutheran Hospice.

Mary Harris

HOPKINS — Services for Mrs. Mary Rose Harris are 2:30 p.m. Wednesday (viewing at 1:30 p.m.) at Jerusalem Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel is in charge. Surviving are her husband, Isaac Harris Jr.; daughter, Pauline Harris; son, Isaac Harris III; mother, Elizabeth Rivers; brothers, Willie Rivers, Leon Rivers, David Rivers and Timothy (Hattie) Rivers, Earnest Hopkins; grandchildren, Joshua, Brandon and Jarvis Harris.

Vina Mae Hallman

LEESVILLE — Services for Vina Mae Hallman, 77, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Beulah United Methodist Church. Mrs. Hallman will be placed in the church thirty minutes prior to service. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Memorials may be made to Beulah United Methodist Church, or Tri-County Hospice, 166 Stonebridge Dr., Ste 100, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mrs. Hallman died Sunday, February 27, 2005. Born in Gilbert, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Brady Cecil and Idee Price Derrick. She was a member of Beulah United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Louis Ray Hallman; daughters, Betty Ann Hobbs of Lexington, Linda Joyce Heywood of the home; sons, Roger Heywood (Karen) of Gilbert, Marvin Heywood (Jane Ellen) of Leesville, David Heywood of Leesville; fourteen grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.

Sandra Maloney

COLUMBIA — Service for Sandra Brown Maloney, 66, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058 or to Family Connection of South Carolina, 2712 Middleburg Drive, Ste. 103-B, Columbia, SC 29204.

Mrs. Maloney died Monday, February 28, 2005. Born in Asheville N.C., she was the daughter of Lawrence Wilder Brown, Sr. and Ruth Ballard Brown. A graduate of Central High School, Charlotte, N.C., she attended Coker College. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

A devoted mother and grandmother, she is survived by children and spouses, Kelley Maloney and Randolph K. Liggitt of Columbia, James Matthew, Jr. and Laurie W. Maloney of Greenville, N.C., and Melanie Marie Maloney of Greensboro, N.C.; brothers and sister-in-law, Lawrence Wilder Brown and Philip Randolph and Paulette Brown, all of Charlotte, N.C.; and grandchildren, Randolph Kent Liggitt, Jr. and Kathryn Ann Liggitt.

Special recognition and thanks is extended to Mrs. Maloney’s devoted caregivers, Clevert Graham and Barbara Martin.

Jewell Jones

AIKEN — Entered into rest on Sunday, Mrs. Jewell Gunter Jones, of 194 Willow Run Road. Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her sister, Mrs. Josephine Kilgore.

Surviving are her husband, Nathan Jones, and a son, Burley B. Jones, both of Aiken, S.C.; a daughter, Barbara Ann Lightsey of Bath, S.C., one sister, Marie Gantt of Leesville, S.C.

Mrs. Jones was born in Batesburg, S.C., to the late Joseph and Lillie Mills Gunter. She retired from Graniteville Company’s Hickman Division.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Hatcher Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call at the residence of Burley Jones, 190-A Willow Run Road, Aiken, S.C., or on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hatcher Funeral Home, U.S. Hwy. No. 1, Langley, S.C.

Mary Simmons

COLUMBIA — Services for St. Mary Quarles Simmons, 74, are 8 p.m. Wednesday (viewing at 7) at United House of Prayer for All People, Winnsboro, burial: Hamden Plains Cemetery, Hamden, Conn. Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home, Winnsboro, is in charge. Born in Abbeville Co. to Joe and Mary Quarles, she died Feb. 25, 2005. Surviving: children, Gideon, Thelma, Sherry, Corinthia, William, Mary; others.

Michael Pulliam

COLUMBIA — Michael Ard Pulliam died Sunday, February 27, 2005. A memorial service will be held at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, on Wednesday, March 2, at 3:30 p.m. The Rev. Canon Michael Sullivan will officiate.

Mr. Pulliam was born on March 17, 1943, in Macon, Georgia, to Louise Young Pulliam and the late Clarence Ard Pulliam. Mr. Pulliam grew up in Gray, Georgia, and was a member of Gray Baptist Church. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1965 and from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1968. He was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1968 and served as Chief Counsel for the Minority on the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on federal administrative procedures from 1969-1971. In 1971 he became Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of South Carolina and served in that position until 1975. Thereafter he served as Deputy Solicitor for the fifth Judicial Circuit (Richland and Kershaw Counties) from 1975-1976. He later joined the Columbia law firm of Richardson, Plowden, Grier, and Howser, P.A. (n/k/a Richardson, Plowden, Carpenter, and Robinson, P.A.) where he practiced law until his retirement in 1997. He remained “of counsel” with the firm until his death. Mike was also a member of the: Richland County Bar Association, SC Bar Association, American Bar Association, and the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association. Mike’s interests included flying, boating and his annual trips to St. Barth with his family.

In addition to his mother, Louise Pulliam Kelley, Mr. Pulliam is survived by his two sons, Michael Ard Pulliam, Jr. and wife, Tomlyn Vadset Pulliam of Beaufort, SC, and Charles Craig Pulliam and wife, Caroline Cousin Pulliam of Columbia, SC; sister, Jan Pulliam Jones and husband, William Reeves Jones; two granddaughters, Justice Louise Pulliam and Eleanor McClain Pulliam. He was pre-deceased by a grandson, Lucius Gregory Pulliam.

The family will receive friends following the service at Kawana Place, 701 Kawana Road. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Lewis Walker

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Services for Mr. Lewis “Tom” Walker will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Surviving are his cousin, Betty Dunlap, Jeanette Myers, Olivette Sims, Vernell Thompson, Louise Sims, James Gaddy, Joan Dixon, and Gail Gaddy; aunt, Elizabeth Walker.
