Harvey Budkie Jr.

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. — Harvey Edward Budkie, Jr., age 78, of 241 Spirit Mountain Trail, died Sunday February 27, 2005, in Haywood Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of the late Harvey E. Budkie, Sr. and Irene Blattner Budkie. He was also preceded in death by a son, Joey Budkie, who died in 1991. He was a retired Sgt. Major with the United States Army and had served during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He also had tours of duty in Austria and Germany and retired at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Following his retirement he was a ROTC instructor at Camden High School in Camden, S.C., for fourteen years. He had resided in Haywood County since 1990.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Myong Yu Budkie; one daughter, Barbara Coleman of Columbia, S.C.; two stepdaughters, Kellie Williamson of Irmo, S.C., and Bambi Davis of Columbia, S.C.; two sons, Eric Budkie and Geoffrey Budkie both of Columbia, S.C.; one sister, Carolyn Sylvia Cassel of Cincinnati, Ohio, and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m., Tuesday, March 1, 2005, in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with the Reverend Eddie Dietz officiating. Burial will follow in the veteran’s section of Green Hill Cemetery with military graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 3-4 p.m. Tuesday prior to the services at the funeral home.

Pinkney Summers

COLUMBIA — Services for Pinkney “Nutsie” Summers, 73, will be noon Wednesday at Glover’s Funeral Home, Orangeburg. Born in Cope to Charlie and Mary Summers, he died Feb. 25, 2005. Surviving: wife, Elizabeth Washington Summers; children, Gordon, Kenneth, Jerome, Debra, Tonya Summers, Doneath Porter; siblings, Earline Grant, Queen Williams, Mary McDonald, Gland, Eli, Walter, H.B. Summers.

Milton Gordon

COLUMBIA — Services with full military honors for Master Sgt. Milton Gordon of Columbia will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home with burial to follow in the family plot of Robinson Memorial Gardens. Family visitation is this evening from 6-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, 2930 Colonial Drive, is in charge of the service.

Mr. Gordon died Feb. 23, 2005. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Johnnie S. and Carmilla Price Gordon. Milton was educated in the public schools of Richland County. Upon graduating, he served his country in the United States Army, and retired after more than (20) twenty years of dedicated service. Mr. Gordon was a member of St. Luke Baptist Church, a member of the VFW, the Sheriffs Association, the American Legion and the Disabled Veterans Association.

Surviving are his wife, Gloria Moore Gordon; sons, Donald (Geraldine), Anthony (Sylvia) and Frederick (Denise) Gordon; daughters, Gwendolyn Gordon and Gail Jefferson; his sister, Clara G. McIntire; 18 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren.

Calvin Carney

AUGUSTA — Mr. Calvin Carney, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died in the Doctor’s Hospital Burn Center on February 25, 2005. He suffered multiple organ failure as a result of burns sustained in a fire.

Mr. Carney was a B-25 pilot during WWII in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He retired from Interpace Corporation where he served as the Director of Transportation and Logistics and as a corporate pilot. He was an avid golfer at the Boscobel Club.

Mr. Carney is survived by his wife of 41 years, Jane Carney. Other survivors include Karen Metcalf from a previous marriage, Carolyn Bowden, Chris Carney, Katie Mitchell, six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 4, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church on West Whitner St., Anderson, SC, with Dr. Alan Elmore and Dr. G. Daniel McCall officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. in the Session Room at First Presbyterian Church of Anderson.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Children Unlimited, 1825 Gadsden St. Columbia, SC 29201 or to the Southeastern Firefighters’ Burn Foundation, 3614 J. Dewey Gray Cir. Ste. C, Augusta, GA 30909.

Macel Cooke

PELION — Services for Macel Cooke, 91, will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Interment will be held in Robbinsville, N.C., in Metz Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mrs. Cooke widow of Benjamin Franklin Cooke, died Monday, February 28, 2005. Born in Haywood County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Lewis H. and Grace Webb Arrowood.

She is survived by her son, Ed Queen (C.J.) of Easley; grandchildren, Liz Grant (Carl) of Pelion, Andrea Queen of TN, David Queen (Gail) of Lexington; and six great-grandsons.

Jearl Hanson

LEXINGTON — Services for Jearl Dean “J.D.” Dalton Hanson, 61, will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at First Baptist Church of Lexington with interment to follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Lexington, 415 Barr Rd., Lexington, SC 29072.

Mrs. Hanson died Sunday, February 27, 2005. Born in Summerville, S.C., she was the daughter of the late James and Azalee Dalton. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lexington.

She is survived by her husband, Clarence Hanson of Lexington; daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and Kenny Stuart of Lexington, Kim and Glenn Ross of West Columbia; brothers, Jimmy Dalton of Dixiana, Jack Dalton of West Columbia, Bobby Dalton of Lexington; and four grandchildren.

Ed Clary

COLUMBIA — Ed Clary, former U.S.C. All-Star and a two sport Letterman, died Sunday, February 27, 2005. Graveside service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Born May 22, 1916, in Gaffney, Mr. Clary was the son of the late George Edward and Missiniah Wood Clary. He was a high school All-American at Gaffney High School in 1934, and lettered in football and baseball at the University of South Carolina from 1935 to 1939. He was awarded Honorable Mention All-American status following his final year of football in 1938 and was selected to play in the inaugural Blue-Gray Football Classic in January of 1939 and was voted the Most Valuable Player of the game. He captained the 1939 Gamecock baseball squad. Following his senior year, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers Football and the Brooklyn Dodgers Baseball organizations. He played several years in the Dodgers Minor League System.

Mr. Clary was a Navy veteran of WW II and a retired U.S. Postal employee. He served as the 3rd President of the USC BAM Club (currently known as the Gamecock Club); he was a Southern Conference and S.C. High School League football official for forty years; a member of the American Legion Post 6 athletic committee; and a member of the University of South Carolina Gamecock Club and Lettermen’s Association.

Mr. Clary was a member of Shandon Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, W.E. “Chip” and Lydia Downing Clary; daughters, Kitty Clary Goding and Shelley Clary Ray; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the University of South Carolina Lettermen’s Scholarship Fund or to a charity of one’s choice.

Willie Gooding

DARLINGTON — Willie Levi Gooding, age 73, formerly of Linden, died Friday, February 25, at his home in Flint, Michigan. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home, with interment following in New Providence Cemetery.

Mr. Gooding was born in Camden, a son of the late Edward and Elise McKenzie Gooding. He was employed by Flint Metal Fabricating as an inspector for 25 years. Mr. Gooding served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Great Falls Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Callie Dixon Gooding of Flint, MI, a son, Wendall and wife Barbara Gooding of Flint, MI, a grandson, Wendall II and wife Rebecca Gooding of Ecorse, MI, a granddaughter, Angela Gooding of Flint, MI, two sisters: Doris (Weatherford) and husband James Anderson of Dutton, AL, and Marian and husband Richard Evans of Darlington, two brothers-in-law : Laverne and wife Ella Mae Dixon and family of Darlington, Richard Dixon and family of Winnsboro, SC.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 Tuesday night at the funeral home and other times at the home of Ellie Mae Dixon, 1741 Indian Branch Road, Darlington.

Ernest Jordan Jr.

LAMAR — Funeral services for Ernest Leo Jordan, Jr., 82, will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Richard Hopper will officiate, with burial in the church Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 1, 2005, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 56, Lydia, SC 29079.

Mr. Jordan died Sunday, February 27, 2005. Born in Darlington County, S.C., he was a son of the late Ernest Leo and Roxie Anderson Jordan. He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, the Men’s Club, and the Wesley Fellowship Class. He served in the Army during World War II in the Philippines and Japan. He retired from Sonoco and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He was a member of Woodmen of the World and IPTAY.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Ophelia Grantham Jordan of Lamar, S.C.; son, Butch Jordan of Hartsville, S.C.; daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Willard Ard of Lamar, S.C., Brenda Morrell of Hartsville, S.C., Elaine and Lenny Carpenter of Hartsville, S.C., Phoebe and Danny Stokes of Lamar, S.C.; sister, Mary Ellen Tedder of Lamar, S.C.; grandchildren, Jeff Ard, Jamey Ard, Todd Morrell, Ty Morrell, Dawn Carpenter, Allen Carpenter, Carla Stokes, Brad Stokes, Ben Jordan, Matt Jordan. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles “Buddy” Jordan, Foster Jordan, T. H. Jordan, and Frank Jordan; grandchild, Wayne Morrell.
