Julian Hirst

HARTSVILLE — Julian F. Hirst died Sunday, February 27, 2005, in Norfolk, Va. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2005, in Magnolia Cemetery. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be made to the Margaret Fagan Hirst Memorial Fund of the Blue Ridge Regional Library, Box 5264, Martinsville, VA 24115.

Mr. Hirst was born in Purcellville, Virginia, in 1921, the son of the late J. Terry Hirst and Katherine Fox Hirst. He had been married to his wife, the late Margaret Jane Fagan Hirst, for 54 years. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1941, and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. During his career, he was Town Manager of Pearisburg and Pulaski, City Manager of Martinsville and Roanoke, and Executive Director of the Virginia Municipal League. He was City Manager of Norfolk from 1975 until 1986.

Mr. Hirst actively volunteered in the community. Some of his many associations were: the American Red Cross, Leadership Hampton Roads, Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, Norfolk Kiwanis, Norfolk Senior Olympics, Volunteer Connection of South Hampton Roads, Hampton Roads Council of the Navy League, Junior League of Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Lee’s Friends, Episcopal Church Home Board, City of Norfolk Electoral Board, Governor’s Education Block Grant Advisory Committee, Virginia State Chamber of Commerce, and the International City Manager’s Association.

He was also Chairman of the Board of J.T. Hirst & Company, Leesburg, a building and materials company his father founded in 1926.

He is survived by his children, J. Terry Hirst, of New York, David T. Hirst and his wife, Paula of Virginia Beach, and Jane Hirst Green and her husband, David of Altavista; his grandchildren, Townshend Hirst, Emma Green, and Mollie Green; and his sister, Jane Hirst Bogle and her husband, A.D. He was predeceased by his daughter, Margaret Fagan Hirst, and his sister, Anne Hirst Pollard.

Mary Dolman

IRMO — Services for Mary Perry Dolman, 85, will be held Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 505 South Dewey Avenue, Bartlesville, OK 74003. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, is in charge of local arrangements.

Mrs. Dolman, wife of the late Jack Allan Dolman, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005. Born in Lindsey, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of the late Melville Wilson and Annibel Crow Perry. She was a 1936 graduate of Lindsey High School, a 1938 graduate of Oklahoma College of Women, and a 1941 graduate in Business Administration of the University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma. She was on the staff of Hillcrest Country Club, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, from 1980 to 1992, and was involved with the Hillcrest Women’s Golf Association, where she was President and Sports Chairman. She was past Lady’s Golf Club Champion. She was active in the D.A.R., serving as regent, and was a member of the American Association of University Women.

Mrs. Dolman was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Bartlesville, and was the church secretary from 1963-1975.

Surviving are her sons, Allan Dolman, and his wife, Marietta B. of Irmo, and Paul Wilson Dolman of Ft. Myers, Florida; grandchildren, Mindy Dolman Waring and Jon Allan Dolman; and great-granddaughter, Logan McClendon Waring.

Patricia Smith

NORTH — Patricia H. Smith, 69, of North, died Monday, February 28, 2005.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2005, at North United Methodist Church with Rev. Samuel Warwick and Rev. Matt Rucker officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.

Mrs. Smith was born in Orangeburg County, a daughter of the late Oswald and Margaret Livingston Holub. She was a graduate of Orangeburg Regional Hospital School of Nursing. She was a former director of Nursing for the Orangeburg Regional Hospital. She was married to the late James Morris Smith. She was a loving mother, sister and grandmother.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law: James M. Smith, Jr., and Wendi Smith, of North; two granddaughters, Abbey and Anna Margaret Smith, of North; one sister: Mary Emma Rast, of Swansea.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home and other times at the home of James M. Smith, Jr., 132 Victoria Circle, North.

Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, or Hospice of TRMC.

Harry Toole

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Harry Lawrence Toole, 82, of West Columbia, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2005, at First Baptist Church of West Columbia, officiated by Rev. Dr. Lonnie H. Shull. Burial will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia.

Mr. Toole, widower of Enoree Oswalt Toole, died Sunday, February 27, 2005. Born in Salley, S.C., he was a son of the late Lawrence and Viola Livingston Toole. Mr. Toole was a member of First Baptist Church of West Columbia and retired, after 40 years of service, from Mount Vernon Mills.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Harry Lavon and Teressa Toole of Gilbert; sisters and brother-in-law, Ava Dunn of Cayce, Ola and James Poole of Chapin; brother and sister-in-law, Earl and Henrietta Toole of Salley; grandson, Keith Toole; granddaughters, Tina Spires and Renee Toole; great-grandsons, Steven Shields and Christopher Collingwood.

Mr. Toole was predeceased by sisters, Louise Stevenson and Mary Dukes; and brothers, Leon Toole, James Toole, and Marion Toole.

Bright Moody

BENNETTSVILLE — Services for Bright Lee “Son” Moody, 85, 11 a.m. Thursday at Second Baptist Church. Burial: Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation: 6-8 tonight at Whitner-Evans Funeral Home. Born in Darlington Co. to Bright and Letha Moody, he died Feb. 28, 2005. Surviving: wife, Sallie; daughters, Sue Wasson, Ellen Townsend; siblings, Walter Moody, Lucille Livingston; 3 grandchildren; predeceased wife, Hazel.

Janie Morrison

COLUMBIA — Janie Seabrook Hane Morrison, 89, died suddenly at Palmetto Richland on Sunday, February 27, 2005. She was predeceased by her husbands, Walter Wolfe Hane (1954) and Robert William Morrison, Sr. (1985).

Mrs. Morrison, fondly known as G-G (Geechy Granny), was born on James Island, S.C., on November 14, 1915, to the late William Benjamin Seabrook, Sr. and Harriett Gervais Seabrook. She was the youngest of eight children, all siblings predeceasing her. She spent her childhood and youth on James Island, Johns Island, in Charleston, and at Boone Hall in Mt. Pleasant. She was first married to Walter Hane in 1936 and in 1960 to Bob Morrison. She spent all of her adult life in Columbia, S.C., where she worked as “Marjorie Manners” at Belk’s Department Store and eventually retired from state employment with the Tax Commission and the S.C. Retirement System.

Survivors include a daughter, Janie Hane Stone, and son-in-law, Jerry Holt Stone, as well as grandson, Gregory Hane Stone of Columbia. From Bartlett, Tenn., are her granddaughter, Sherrie Stone Phillips, her husband, John, and their sons, Stone Patrick Phillips and Ryan Seabrook Phillips. Also from Raleigh, N.C., are stepson, Robert W. Morrison, Jr., and his wife, Dicky McCants Morrison; stepgranddaughter, Ann Morrison Nelson, her husband Bill and their two sons. From Burlington, N.C., are stepgranddaughter, Trina Morrison Holt, her husband Michael, and their two daughters.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carolina Children’s Home, 3201 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29204, or Shandon Presbyterian Church, 607 Woodrow Street, Columbia, SC 29205.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Shandon Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Jim Lowry. Visitation will follow the service in the church parlor.

Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Kiyo Reeves

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Kiyo Okubo Reeves, 83, will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Reeves, wife of the late Cromwell Lartee Reeves, died Saturday, February 26, 2005. She was born on February 23, 1922, in Hokkaido, Japan. She was a seamstress with Oxford Industries and a member of Woodfield Park Baptist Church.

A loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, she is survived by her son, Charles A. Reeves of Columbia; daughter, Mari Thornton and her husband, Jimmy of Lexington; grandchildren, Patricia Rozansky of Green Pond, N.J., Timmy Thornton and Britt Thornton, both of Lexington; great-grandson, Logan Rozansky of Green Pond, N.J.; and Ethel, her beloved pet.

Ray Stogner

COLUMBIA — J. Ray Stogner, 67, son of the late Christine Nowood and James Hamilton Stogner, passed away February 28, 2005.

Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Wharton Stogner; children, Cindy Pressley of Charlotte, N.C., Dean Stogner of Matthews, N.C., Christie Stegall of Marshville, N.C., Craig Langford and Angie Langford both of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; brother, Pat Stogner of Kennesaw, Ga.; sister, Susan Kenin of Charleston, S.C.; and nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Stogner attended U.S.C. and his career was in sales. He was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church and an active volunteer.

Services will be private and the family will receive friends at the home from 4:30 to 7 p.m. March 2, 2005.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eastminster Presbyterian Church or the Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.

Nancy Siedschlag

WEST COLUMBIA — Graveside services for Nancy Hammond Siedschlag, 78, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Palmetto Place Children’s Emergency Shelter, c/o Jr. Womens Club of Columbia, P.O. Box 476, Columbia, SC 29202.

Mrs. Siedschlag, wife of the late Everett Siedschlag, died Monday, February 28, 2005. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Robert R. and Jennie Hamrick Hammond. She was a member of State Street Baptist Church, and the ABC Sunday School Class.

Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy S. and Donald Aull of West Columbia, and Susan S. and David Batistig of Ford City, Penn., and Jennifer S. Herndon of West Columbia; son and daughter-in-law, Everett W., Jr. and Eleanor Siedschlag of West Columbia; brother and sister-in-law, Robert Roy, Jr. and Mary Hammond of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Robby and De’Ette Aull, Brandy Aull, Lauren Aull, Davey and Teena Batistig, Jason and Stacey Batistig, Heather and Gene Penrod, Brett and Debbye Siedschlag, Brad and Georgia Siedschlag, Jennifer and Brian Autry, Luke Herndon, and Jon Nick Herndon; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the caregivers, friends, and Hospice Nurses at Agape Nursing Center.
