Ernest Baker Sr.

SUMTER — Ernest Wilson Baker, Sr., 89, widower of Lois Touchberry Baker, died Sunday, March 6, 2005 at a local nursing center.

Born in Kershaw County, he was a son of the late Lee A. Baker and the late Cordelia Gardner Baker.

Mr. Baker was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, and was a Mason. He was the owner of a small farm, and owned and operated Baker’s Grocery of Hwy. 15 North. He retired from Evans Trailers and was an associate of Ernest Baker Sales. He was also a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a son, Ernest W. Baker Jr. and his wife, Miriam, of Sumter; two daughters, Sara Joe Batten and Sylvia Frazier and her husband, Robert, all of Sumter; a brother, Lyle A. Baker of Charlotte, NC; four sisters, Louise Dion of Tampa, Fla., Ethlyn B. Snyder of Manning and Juanita B. Majors and Jodeil B. Altman, both of Sumter; seven grandchildren, Ernest W. “Ernie” Baker III, Linda Sue Stengel, Pamela Baker, Melissa Beasley, Robert “Robbie” Frazier Jr., Tonya Grammer and Ronald Frazier; 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 P.M. Tuesday in the First Baptist Church with Rev. Ryan Pack and Rev. Charles Clanton officiating.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Monday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at 100 E. Foxworth Mill Road, Sumter.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 107 East Liberty St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

Carroll Brannon Sr.

LEXINGTON — Graveside services for Carroll Joseph Brannon, Sr., 87, will be held Tuesday, March 08, 2005 at 2:00 PM, at Greenville Memorial Gardens, Greenville, SC. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society and the American Lung Association. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, is in charge.

Mr. Brannon died Saturday, March 5, 2005. Born in Piedmont, SC, he was the husband of the late Mary Trammell Brannon and the son of the late Hugh and Pearl Allen Brannon. Mr. Brannon was a Veteran of Army Air Corps during World War II and a plant engineer of J.P. Stevens. He retired from United Tool and Die in Lexington.

Surviving are his sons, Joe (Cheryl) Brannon and Hugh (Kathy) Brannon, all of Lexington; grandchildren, Jay (Sherri) Brannon, David Brannon, Jeff (Heather) Brannon and Jaime (Garry) Presor; great-grandchildren, Amber Brannon, Miranda Brannon, Emma Brannon and Hannah Presor and brother, Dr. Leland Brannon of San Diego, CA.

Jacqueline Blanding

COLUMBIA — Services for Mrs. Jacqueline “Jackie” Ross Blanding, will be held 1:00 pm, today at Palmer Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Blanding died Wednesday, March 2, 2005. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of Evelyn Ross Greshams. She was employed with Bendix, Inc.

Surviving are daughters, Letitia Ross and Amber Blanding; a son, Corey Blanding, her mother of Columbia; a brother Willie J. Ross; and four grandchildren.

Prudence Frederic

ORANGEBURG — Prudence Greer Frederic, 87, of 516 Tradewinds, Orangeburg, SC. died Saturday night, March 5, 2005, at her residence.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Smoak officiating and burial in Memorial Park Cemetery in Orangeburg. The casket will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg is in charge. Active pallbearers are Ramsay Hawkins, Greg Sorrow, Eddie Dantzler, Jimmy Barbrey, Bert Bozard, Ricky Cudd, Allen Dantzler, David Cudd.

She was born October 30, 1917 in Union, SC. She was the last of 10 children of the late Lester Greer and the late Martha Ann Vaughn Greer. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Methodist Women and a member of the Young at Heart Club. She was the widow of the late James C. Frederic. She was preceded in death by a grandson, James Ronny Dantzler. She was a previous employee of the Orangeburg Regional Hospital.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Jimmy (Betty) Dantzler of Orangeburg; two sons and daughter-in-laws, James C. Frederic Jr. and Sheryle of Greenwood, Ralph Frederic and Vivian Frederic of Little Mountain, SC; three grandchildren, Ann Hawkins, Ellisse Sorrow, Lauren Frederic; four great-grandchildren, Jordon Heffelfinger, Eddie Dantzler, Allen Dantzler and Paton Sorrow and two special caretakers, Jo Ann. B. Thompson and Alice Geiger.

Friends may call at the residence, 516 Tradewinds, SC and at the funeral home. Visitation is 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg.

Nell Hoffman

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Nell P. Hoffman, 79, of West Columbia, will be held at 10am Tuesday in Springdale Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Tommy McGill. Burial will follow at 4pm at Hillcrest Cemetery, Hwy 544, Conway, SC. The family will receive friends from 5-7pm Monday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice.

Ms. Hoffman died Saturday, March 5, 2005. Born in Conway, she had been an area resident for 50 years. She was the daughter of the late Olin and Emma Jones. She was retired from Southern Bell and was a member of Telephone Pioneers. Ms. Hoffman enjoyed serving her community through volunteer work for the Red Cross. Additionally, she taught English to foreign immigrants through her church, Springdale Baptist.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Lynette and Bobby Robinson of Lexington, Jackie and Smitty Fallaw of Springdale; sisters, Alice Rosser of Sanford, NC, Eunice Brown, Azelea Brown, and Elizabeth Elvis, all of Conway, and Bernice Bourne of Georgetown; grandchildren, Phillip Roland and his wife Sherri of Swansea, Jeremy Fallaw of Springdale, John Fallaw of Providence, RI; and two great grandchildren. Ms. Hoffman was preceded in death by her brother, Levon Jones.

Benjamin Harpe III

CHERAW — Benjamin Thomas Harpe, III, (Ben) 29, died Saturday, March 5, 2005. Born in Cheraw, SC. He was the son of Tommy and Kathy Graves Harpe Jr. Ben was a member of Lower Macedonia Church. He loved life and people.

Surviving are: Tara Turner Harpe (wife) of Cheraw, SC; (Parents) Benjamin Thomas Harpe Jr. and Katherine Graves Harpe of Cheraw, SC; (Brother) Justin James Harpe of Cheraw, SC; (Grandmother), Sue C. Harpe of Cheraw, SC; (Niece) Karley Harpe of Cheraw, SC. Preceded in death by, Paternal Grandfather Benjamin Thomas Harpe, Sr. and Maternal Grandparents James A. and Betty Rae Graves.

A Funeral Service will be held at 4:00 PM, Monday March 7, 2005 at Lower Macedonia Baptist Church with burial in Lower Macedonia Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Karley Harpe College Fund at Sentry Bank and Trust of Cheraw, SC.

Eanion McClinton

COLUMBIA — Services for Eanion Rochell McCinton, 44, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Friendship Baptist Church with burial in Brown’s Chapel A.M.E. Church Cemetery. A.A. Dicks Funeral Home, Sullivan Chapel is in charge. He died March 2, 2005. Surviving are daughter, Andrea McClinton; five brothers; six sisters; five grandchildren; others.

Evans Horton

BETHUNE — Mr. Evans Richard Horton, 82, of 2833 Bethune Road, Bethune, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2005 at the Forest Lakes Healthcare in Augusta, Georgia. The widower of the late Clivie Mae Railey Horton, Mr. Horton was born July 16, 1922, in Kershaw, a son of the late Sidney Blondell Horton and Ida Elizabeth West Horton. A U.S. Army World War Two Veteran, Mr. Horton was a member of the Providence Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class and had served as a Deacon and Trustee.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 7, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. form the Providence Baptist Church by the Rev. Randy Knight and Rev. Hilton Batts. Burial will be in the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Horton is survived by two sons, Sidney Evans Horton of Waynesboro, Georgia and Horace G. Horton of Ridgeway; a daughter, Robin Horton Kauth of Bethune; two brothers, Paschal V. Horton and Douglas G. Horton both of Kershaw; a sister, Zula Lee Fletcher of Kershaw; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Mr. Horton was preceded in death by a grandson.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Providence Baptist Church, 3343 Providence Road, Kershaw, SC 29067.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, March 6, 2005 at the Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw Chapel and other times at the home, 2833 Bethune Road, Bethune.
