Pearl Robertson

WHITMIRE — Pearl Wessinger Robertson, age 94, the widow of Edgar “DoDo” Robertson died Saturday, March 5th in the J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home.

She was born in Lexington County and was a daughter of the late Jonas and Elvie Fulmer Wessinger.

Mrs. Robertson was a former employee of J.P. Stevens Whitmire Plant and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Whitmire.

Surviving are two brothers, Leroy Wessinger of Little Mountain, Carroll Wessinger of Newberry and one sister, Irene Coward of Gallatin, TN.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 8th at Gray Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Whitmire Cemetery.

The family will greet friends following the services at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Whitmire, Glenn St. Whitmire, SC 29178.

Robert Lide Dargan II

COLUMBIA — Services for Robert (Bob) Lide Dargan, II will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Dr. John R. de Witt and the Rev. L. Craig Wilkes officating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be L. Clinton Baker, James E. Byrd, Eugene B. Chase, III, William P. Ellerbe, Gene Gallogly, Paul L. Holcomb, William D. King, and James B. Terry. Honorary pallbearers will be the Elders and Deacons of First Presbyterian Church, and the Friday Morning Men’s Bible Study. The family will receive friends in Jackson Hall following the service.

Mr. Dargan died Wednesday, March 9, 2005. Bob was born July 21, 1940, son of the late Mary Hart Green Dargan and Perrin Quarles Dargan, and the mother whom he knew, Mary Louise Hodge Dargan of Spartanburg.

Bob received his B.A. from Wofford College in 1962 where he was captain of the golf team and a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. He was a graduate of the School of Banking of the South, Louisiana State University. He was a Navy veteran. Upon completion of a management training program with First National Bank of South Carolina, he had a 30 year career with First National Bank of South Carolina/ South Carolina National Bank, having served as an officer in Darlington, S.C., Camden, S.C., Anderson, S.C., and Columbia, S.C. Until his retirement May 2004, Bob was President and CEO of South Carolina Federal Credit Union, North Charleston, S.C. He was recognized for his leadership, vision and commitment to quality by the industry. Before his retirement, Bob served on the boards of First Carolina Corporate Credit Union, Greensboro, N.C.; COOP and Officiates, Ontario, Calif.; SOCACHA, Columbia, S.C.; South Carolina Federal Service Corporation, North Charleston, S.C.; Trident Chamber of Commerce, Charleston, S.C.; Board of Advisors, Charleston Southern University, North Charleston, S.C.; Operations Advisory Committee, Federal Reserve Bank, Richmond, Virginia; South Carolina Credit Union League, Columbia, S.C.

Golf was his sport and he was a member of Wildewood-Woodcreek Country Club. In 1971 Bob was the National Lefthanders Amateur Champion. His most memorable tournaments are the ones that he played with his sons, Robert and David.

Bob is survived by his wife of 39 years, Betty Jo Lorick Dargan; his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Stuart D. James and Chad R. James; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Lide Dargan, Jr. and Angela L. Dargan, and David Lorick Dargan and Mandi M. Dargan; six grandchildren, Tillman Louise, Mary Lawton and Dargan McCutchen James, Katherine Blair and Perrin Elizabeth Dargan and Ellyn Meadows Dargan; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Perrin Q. Dargan, Jr. and Butler Dargan of Pawleys Island, S.C., John H. Dargan and Kate Dargan of Spartanburg, S.C., and Richard L. Dargan of Silver Springs, Maryland; sisters-in-law, Mary Alice L. Sumner and Susan L. Powers both of Columbia; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

Bob was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and employer.

Quinton Chavis Sr.

GASTON — A funeral service for Quinton Talmadge Chavis, Sr., 85, will be held 11 o’clock Friday morning, March 25, 2005, at West Columbia First Church of the Nazarene, conducted by The Reverend Bill Harmon and The Reverend R. J. Hammond, nephew of Mr. Chavis. Memorials may be made to The First Church of the Nazarene, 350 Watling Rd., West Columbia, SC 29170 or Tri-County Hospice, 166 Stoneridge Drive, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mr. Chavis died Wednesday, March 23, 2005. Born July 2, 1919, in Swansea, S.C., he was a son of the late Talmadge and Rachael Sharpe Chavis. Mr. Chavis was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene and the Adult Sunday School Class. He also was a member of the Dutch Fork Masonic Lodge. After retiring from the City of Columbia with 40 years of service, he worked part time for Shives Funeral Home. Mr. Chavis was proud to have served our country in the Army during WWII where he received two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Medal.

Survivors are his beloved wife of 63 years, Bessie Elders Chavis; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Bill Bishop; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Jean Chavis all of West Columbia; sister, Flossie Sharpe of Columbia; brother, Bruce Chavis of Evans, GA; grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mr. Chavis was preceded in death by his son, Quinton Talmadge Chavis, Jr.; brothers, Ed Chavis, and Elzie Chavis; sisters, Ila Hutto, Agnes Neese and Thelma Williams. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Rapha Residential Care staff and administration and Tri-County Hospice for their care and compassion.

Olivette Marie Heideman

IRMO — A Mass of Christian Burial for Olivette Marie Heideman, 95, widow of George Heideman, noon Saturday (visitation 11:30 a.m.) at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, burial at a later date. Greenlawn Funeral Home, Columbia, is in charge. She died March 30, 2005. Surviving: grandchildren, Sandy Evans, Cathy Long, Mary Ann Buonforte, Thomas Heideman Jr.; 12 great, 6 great-great-grandchildren; nephew, Jerry Shoemaker.

Paul H. Jones

MULLINS — Mr. Paul Herman Jones, 74, husband of Eleanor Boatwright Jones, died Thursday, March 31, 2005, in Marion County Medical Center after an illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 2 at the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home, with Rev. Deborah Taylor and Rev. Levon Hucks officiating. Burial will follow in Center United Methodist Church Cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Mr. Jones was born April 11, 1930, in Marion County, a son of the late Sam P. and Mamie Smith Jones. Mr. Jones retired as Vice President with SoPakCo, producer of MREs, ready to eat meals for the military. He also retired from the S.C. National Guard as a Major, having served with the 1st Battalion of the 263rd Armor Division. He was a graduate of Mullins High School and attended Clemson University. He was an avid golfer and a member of Pineland Country Club. Mr. Jones was a member of Center United Methodist Church.

Surviving Mr. Jones in addition to his wife of the home, are 2 sons, Sam P. Jones and his wife Amy of Apex, N.C., and Brett M. Jones and his wife Robin of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; 3 sisters, Marie Kirkpatrick of Charlotte, NC, Peggy C. Hannah of Myrtle Beach and Joyce J. Johnson of Cary, N.C.; a special caregiver, Carolyn F. Mullins of Mullins; and Mr. Jones’ Special Friend, his dog, Bud.

Memorials may be made to Center United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 248, Mullins, SC 29574.

Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6 til 8 p.m. at Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Jefferson Wall

ALPHARETTA — Mr. Jefferson Claude Wall, 64, of Alpharetta died on Friday, April 1, 2005. Mr. wall served in the South Carolina National Guard and was active during the Vietnam War. Survivors include his wife, Karen Wall of Alpharetta; sons Chris (Paul)Robertson of Cumming, and Barry (Paula) Robertson of Sugar Hill; and daughter Shannon (Scott) Cagle of Duluth.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 05, 2005 at 4:00 pm in the McDonald and Son Funeral Home chapel. Graveside Service will be held April 06, 2005 at 4:00 pm at the Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia, S.C.

Helen Baker

CAMDEN — Helen Catoe Hunnicutt Baker, 85, died Saturday. Born Dec. 25, 1919, she was the firstborn daughter of the late Hollis L. Catoe and Ala Hicks Catoe. She was the wife of the late Louis Lee Hunnicutt and Cleatus Baker. She was a member of the Eastern Stars.

Mrs. Baker was predeceased by her son, Louis “Lee” Hunnicutt, Jr.; brothers, Hallet, Hollis “Buster” and Olin Cecil Catoe.

Survivors are her son, Marshall Henry Hunnicutt of Camden; brothers, James Catoe of Camden, Harvey Catoe of Greenville, Tenn., Stanley Catoe of Goose Creek, SC, and Jack Catoe of Cochran, Ga.; sisters, Emmaleen Lucas and Janet Rogers of Camden.

Memorial Services will be held Wednesday at 3:00pm at the Malvern Hill Baptist Church where she was a lifetime member. The family will received friends at the family resident.

As requested by Mrs. Baker she will be cremated and placed beside her husband, Louis Lee at Mt. Zion Church Cemetery.

Col. Evans C. Carlson

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Col. Evans Charles Carlson, USMC (Ret.), 87, of West Columbia, will be held at 10am Wednesday, April 6, 2005, in Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, officiated by Rev. Paul Aebischer, Rev. Virginia Aebischer, and Mr. Art Wuertz. Burial with full military honors will follow at 2:30pm at Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, SC. Honorary pallbearers will be Jason Evans Carlson, John Claude Fordyce Loving, Gabriel Evans-Hugh Loving, Benjamin Michael James Loving, Chris Diana, Maj. Ashley William Fisher, USMCR, 1st Sgt. Carl Barnhill, USMC (Ret.), Maj. John Hopkins, USMC (Ret.), and John Chester. The family will receive friends from 7-9pm Tuesday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, 1000 “B” Ave., West Columbia, SC 29169 or to Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Grand Central Station, PO Box 4777, New York, NY 10163, 1-800-708-7644.

Col. Carlson died Saturday, April 2, 2005. Born in Douglas, AZ, he was the son of the late Brigadier General Evans F. Carlson, USMCR (Dec.) and Dorothy Seccombe Carlson. Col. Carlson was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the US Marine Corps in January 1942. He served in the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion known as Carlson’s Raiders. During WWII, he was awarded the Silver Star for Heroism during the Battle of Asamama on Guadalcanal. Additionally, Col. Carlson was awarded a second Silver Star for service in the Korean Conflict as a night fighter pilot. Other meritorious awards include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, two Distinguished Air Medals, two Purple Hearts, and two Presidential Unit Citations. Following his retirement from the Marine Corps in 1967, he served as Dean of Overseas Studies for City Colleges of Chicago. Col. Carlson was a member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church and he was a 32nd degree Mason.

Surviving are his wife, Regina M. Carlson of West Columbia; daughter and son-in-law, Karen Carlson Loving and John Farnsworth Loving of Greenville; sons, Evans J. “E.J.” Carlson and Thomas F. “Ford” Carlson, both of West Columbia; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
