Tommie Padgett
BAY St. LOUIS, MO. — Funeral Services for Mrs. Tommie Turner Padgett of Bay St. Louis, MS will be held 2 PM Tuesday, April 5, 2005 in the chapel of Greenlawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Dallas Redding officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Tuesday from 12:30 PM until 2 PM. The family has entrusted Greenlawn Funeral Home for arrangements.
Mrs. Tommie Turner Padgett, age 86, died March 31, 2005, in Bay St. Louis, MS at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bobbye Ruth Maggio. Mrs. Padgett was a native of Batesville, MS. She had made her home in Columbia, SC for the last sixteen years.
She was predeceased in death by her parents, Matthew Thomas Turner and Vallie Leola Turner, by her husband of 67 years, Gaddis Terry Padgett, an infant son Terry Thomas Padgett, and a daughter Jeanette Padgett Soderstrom, her son-in-law Herbert McElvain Jr., whom she considered a son, and her grandson Mark Jason McElvain.
Mrs. Padgett is survived by her daughters, Bobbye Ruth Maggio (Mrs. Henry) of Bay St. Louis and Ms. Linda Fay McElvain of Columbia, SC, 7 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
What a wonderful mother we had. She never had ambitions beyond her husband, children and home. She was always able to create a pleasant home for her family in spite of the many moves with he military husband. A faithful Christian until the end of her life. She trained her children in the way that they should go, never leaving room for any doubt for they were loved by her. She knew that the greatest work that she would do would be done within the walls of her home. She welcomed all who entered her home with true hospitality. She truly laid her life down on the altar of motherhood.
Her cooking talent was always evident whom she prepared food for family and friends. Gardening was not work for her, it was her pleasure. Her faith as lived out day-to-day. Church life was always the center of her interaction with others. She was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Columbia, SC. She always had time to listen to the concerns of others and some of her best advice was encouraging each one to “keep on the sunny side.”
She will be greatly missed by her loved ones and many friends, but all who knew her know that she is at peace in her heavenly home.
The family would like to express their love and appreciation to the many friends who have offered and provided love and support during her illness. Thank you Odyssey Hospice Health Care, you served with such love.
Our mother was blessed with wonderful sitters who loved and prayed with her during the long night hours. Thank you Anita, Janice, Tabitha, Florence, and Amanda.
Etheleen Puckett
BATESBURG — Etheleen Puckett, 75, died Saturday, April 2, 2005. Funeral services will be held at 3 P.M. Tuesday, April 5, 2005 from Milton Shealy Funeral Home Chapel. Conducted by Rev. Larry Patterson with burial in Ridge Crest Memorial Park. Active pallbearers are Michael Puckett, Michael and Ricky Oswald, Terry Anderson, Frankie and Jody Puckett.
Mrs. Puckett was born in Lexington County. A daughter of the late William and Girlie Rowe Lawson. She was a homemaker. She was married to the late Lorenzo Puckett.
Surviving are son and daughter-in-law Tony and Peggy Puckett of Batesburg, sisters Margaret Wooten of Columbia, Lucy Temples of Batesburg, brothers Curlie and Jackie Lawson of Batesburg, Ted, Norelle, Jerry Lawson of Leesville, 7 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren. Special friends Carlyle Gantt, Sabrina Cook and Flossie. And loving dogs Lady and Bubba. She was preceded in death by brothers Colie and Bobby Lawson.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. Monday April 4, 2005 at Milton Shealy Funeral Home.

Charles Rhoney
COLUMBIA — Service for Charles W. Rhoney, 75, will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at North Trenholm Baptist Church with burial in Memorial Gardens of Columbia. Memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice, American Cancer Society or (Youth Building) 4 the Next Generation at the church. Visitation will be Monday 6-8 p.m at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
Mr. Rhoney died Saturday, April 2, 2005. Born in Hickory, N.C., he was the son of the late Fred Floyd and Annie Mae Smart Rhoney. An Army veteran of Korea and Vietnam, he was a member of American Legion Post #6, the 1st Cavalry Division Association, B.S. Club and North Trenholm Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of forty-eight years, Betty Brooks Rhoney; daughter, Sarah Jane Rhoney of Columbia; and sister, Barbara Miller of Honolulu, Hawaii. He was predeceased by daughter, Elizabeth Anne “Beth” Rhoney and brother, Richard Rhoney.
Emory Rodgers
KINGSTREE — Emory Dale Rodgers, 54, died Saturday, April 2, in a Florence hospital.
Mr. Rodgers was born September 15, 1950 in Williamsburg Co., a son of Mrs. Mary Evans Rodgers and the late Fred LeGrand Rodgers, Jr. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and Florence-Darlington Tech. Mr. Rodgers was a retired mechanic, a member of Central Presbyterian Church and a former member and E.M.T. for the Williamsburg Co. Rescue Squad. He was preceded in death by a sister: Betty Jo Duke. Surviving, in addition to his Mother of Kingstree, daughters, Mandi (Ben) Sims of Ft. Drum, NY, and Becky Rodgers of Kingstree; son, Chris (Glenda) Rodgers of Kingstree; brother, LeGrand Rodgers of Kingstree; sister, Julie (Jessie) Burnett of York; 3 grandchildren, Hannah and Brayden Sims and Taylor Rodgers; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Chris Osborne and Edison Fulton.
Funeral services will be 3 P.M. Tuesday in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in McClary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. Monday at the Funeral Home.

Riley Funeral Home. Born in Furman to Homer and Rosa Grant Deloach, she died March 29, 2005. CHESTERFIELD — Services for Christine Lee Boatwright, 83, widow of Robert Boatwright, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Macedonia Baptist Church with burial in Lower Macedonia Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home. Born in Chesterfield to Clarence Lee and Nannie Rhynes, she died April 2, 2005. Surviving are two sons; two daughters; one sister.
Francis Sweatman
St. GEORGE — Francis M. (Buster) Sweatman, 83, of 2621 Wire Road entered into eternal rest Saturday April 2, 2005. Funeral services will be held 3 P.M. Tuesday April 5, 2005 at the Grover United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael Ritter officiating. The burial will follow at the Utsey Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. at Bryant Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Allen Canaday, Rodney Canaday, Sid Jackson, Shawn Jackson, Charles (Chuck) Spell, Jr. and Jeff Sweatman.
Buster Sweatman was born March 18, 1922 in Holly Hill a son of the late Fitzhugh Lee Sweatman and Eulalie Knight Sweatman. He was a retired Supervisor of the water and wastewater Department with the town of St. George. He attended schools in Holly Hill and St. George, was a member of the Grover United Methodist Church and was known as “Pappy” to many. He was predeceased by a brother, James R. Sweatman and two sisters Mary S. Taylor and Ruth S. Gedding.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Ethel Jackson Sweatman of the home; One Daughter, Sharon (Mike) Milligan of St. George; One Brother, Fitzhugh L. Sweatman, Jr. of St. George; Five Sisters, Edna S. Judy of Bowman, Mildred S. Utsey of Orangburg, Evelyn S. Avant of St. George, Margaret S. Spell of Smoaks, Barbara S. Sundgren of St. George; Four Grandchildren, Ryan W. (Michelle) Westbury, Matthew R. Milligan, Kimberly W. (Ryan) Chavis all of St. George, Jennifer M. (George) Lee of Mt. Pleasant ; One Great Granddaughter, Emily Lee of Mt. Ava Bishop
BARNWELL — Ava Black Bishop, 48, died Saturday at Barnwell County Hospital of injuries received in an automobile accident.
Mrs. Bishop was born in Orangeburg, SC. She was the daughter of the late Clarendon Hayes and Gretta Smith Creech Black. She was a graduate of Charleston Southern University and a member of Friendship Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir and a nursery worker. From childhood, Ava always said she either wanted to be a librarian of a baby sitter. She successfully accomplished both. She was a very loving and devoted mother, for eight years she was the Barnwell County Librarian, and then taught kindergarten in the Blackville Public Schools. She was currently a kindergarten teacher at Barnwell Primary School. During her tenure at Blackville she was named Teacher of the Year.
Funeral services will be held at 4pm Tuesday at Friendship Baptist Church with Rev. John Nixon & Rev. Ricky Creech officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Monday evening at Friendship Baptist Church and other times at the home of Betty Ruth and Ed Darnell, Wisteria Dr. Denmark SC. Pallbearers will be Mike Still, Stevie Still, Chip Still, Jimmy Tyner, Ritchie Tyner, Mark Black, Tommy Darnell and Kip Gunnells. Mole Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Susan Chitty
BARNWELL — Susan Frazier Chitty, 442, died Saturday morning in Orangeburg County of injuries received in a motorcycle accident.
Ms. Chitty was the daughter of J. Otis and Marie Bell Frazier. She was born in Barnwell SC. She was a graduate of Barnwell High School, received an Associate of Arts degree from USC-Salkehatchie Campus, Allendale, SC She was attending Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College pursuing a degree in Radiology.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and attended the Barnwell First Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 4 pm at the Barnwell First Baptist Church with Dr. Steve Burnette officiating. Burial will follow in the Barnwell Co. Memory Gardens on Reynolds Road. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Monday evening at Mole Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Mike Baxley, Mike Croft, Chris Pritchard, Rhett Richardson, Alan Champy and Johnny Sanders. Honorary Pallbearers will be Ashley Leaphardt, Andy Leaphardt, Brad Kneece, Clifford Kneece, Stacy Walker & Rusty Chitty.

Sarah Moze
NEWBERRY — Services for with burial for Sarah Moze will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at James Hopewell Baptist Church, where she was a member. F. B. Pratt & Son Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge. Born in Newberry Co. to Henry and Mary Lee Caldwell, she died April 2, 2005. She was a member of Women’s Home Aid Society #52. Surviving are six grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; others.
