Leonard Quattlebaum

AIKEN — Services for Leonard Mitchell Quattlebaum, 51, CPA and Chief Financial Officer for Tucker Oil, are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Millbrook Baptist Church with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Shellhouse Funeral Home. He died April 2, 2005. Surviving are wife, Wanda Quattlebaum; sons, Joshua Brandon, Matthew Quattlebaum; brother, James Quattlebaum.

Abbie Turner

COLUMBIA — Memorial Mass for Abbie B. Turner, 92, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church Building Fund or the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, S.C. 29202. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mrs. Turner, wife of the late Louis P. Turner, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005. Born in Sumter in 1912, she was a daughter of the late William A. and Catherine Moses Bryan. She was a charter member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and also a charter member of the St. Joseph Altar Society.

A graduate of Winthrop College, she belonged to several teachers’ organizations including ADK. She taught in Sumter and Columbia. She was involved in community and political activities and was a member of Eagle Forum. She was a member of D.A.R. and a volunteer at Providence Hospital.

Mrs. Turner was widely known in theater circles as an actress, singer and dancer. She performed at the Town Theater, the Workshop Theater and on television as well as at church social events.

Surviving are son, Louis P. Turner, Jr. of Columbia; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Anne and Pete Knox of Marietta, Ga.; sister, Dee Doran of California; brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Sara Bryan; sisters-in-law, Mary Bryan, Clara Bryan and Elizabeth Bryan; grandchildren, Tim Driggers, Moby Turner and Toby Turner; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Patsy Vogel

COLUMBIA — Services for Patsy Wagoner Vogel will be held at a later date. Barr-Price Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel is assisting the family.

Ms. Vogel died Friday. Born in Elkin, N.C., a daughter of the late Edward and Sybil Southard Wagoner. She retired from the U.S. Government as a Budge Analyst. Surviving are sons, Stephen C. Vogel of Bristow, VA and Andrew W. Vogel, of Lexington; sister, Paula Dollarhide; 3 grandchildren.

Vadie Hopkins Croft

SUMTER — Services for Vadie Hopkins Croft, 73, widow of Clifton Croft, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday (visitation 5-7 tonight) at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home, burial in Grove Hill Cemetery, Darlington. Born in Darlington to Norman and Ilene G. Hopkins, she died April 4, 2005. Surviving: children, Claude Croft, Joann Barwick, Marlene Corbett; grandchildren, Claude Jr., Deborah, Phillip, Shannon; 1 great-grand.

Hubert Clemons Sr.

GREEN SEA — Hubert Carroll Clemons, Sr., age 76, died Sunday night (April 3, 2005) in Loris Healthcare. He was born in Horry County, the son of the late John L. and Inez Floyd Clemons. He was a retired tobacco farmer.

Mr. Clemons was an avid outdoorsman who spent most of his spare time enjoying the sports of hunting and fishing. As a younger man he enjoyed quail hunting with friends and relatives. Mr. Clemons’ first love was his family with whom he spent many hours enjoying and teaching his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the pleasures that the outdoors had to offer.

Mr. Clemons is most remembered for his love of fox hunting. He spent most of his adult life in sincere devotion to the breeding, training, running and competing in fox hound field trials. He was well known throughout the United States and Canada as a leader in the sport of fox hunting. His accomplishments in this all American sport are too numerous to mention. However, he was especially proud of being the first inductee to the Masters Fox Hunters Hall of Fame. Mr. Clemons has served as president of many fox hunting organizations including the National Fox Hunters Association and also the first to serve as a two term President of the United States Open Fox Hunters Associations. Many local and state affiliations also were fortunate to have Mr. Clemons serve as an officer or director.

His accomplishments with his hounds are also noted in his record of winnings and placing hounds in hunts throughout the United States. Some of his most noted wins were the Futurity, two-time winner of the National Field Trial. Also included in his winnings were the Georgia State, South Carolina State, and Pee Dee Field Trial, in which he won three consecutive years, a feat which has not been equaled to this day. Mr. Clemons also served many field trials as field judge and was one of the most capable master of hounds ever to conduct a field trial.

He was also noted in helping the new or young hunter in the rules for judging competitive hunts. His patience and understanding with a novice judge has made many judges have confidence in their ability. Mr. Clemons will be missed by all who knew him and especially all of his friends in the sport of fox hunting.

Funeral services will be Wednesday (April 6, 2005) at 11:00 a.m. in the Green Sea Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Johnny Jenerette, Rev. Billy Winburn, and Chris Fowler, with interment in the Green Sea Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Hilda P. Clemons of the home; 2 sons, Carroll Clemons and wife Polly, David Clemons, all of Green Sea, S.C.; 1 daughter, Hilda Shelley and husband Dale of Green Sea, S.C.; 1 brother, James Clemons of Green Sea, S.C.; 1 sister, Glenda Stephens of Charlotte, N.C.; 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Phil Clemons.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Visitation will be Tuesday night from 7 til 9 p.m. at Inman Funeral Home, Tabor City, N.C.

Sarah Johnson Holloman

GAFFNEY — Sarah Johnson Holloman, 90, of White Oak Manor, Rock Hill, S.C., and formerly of Gaffney, S.C., died April 3, 2005, in Piedmont Medical Center, Rock Hill.

Services will be April 6, 2005, at 3:30 p.m. at West End Baptist Church, Gaffney, S.C., with burial in Frederick Memorial Gardens.

Surviving are husband, William Harrison “W.H.” Holloman; daughter, Cheryl H. Wolfe, Columbia, S.C.; son, John E. Holloman, Gaffney, S.C.; 3 grandchildren.

Family will receive friends at West End Baptist Church, Wednesday from 2-3:15 p.m.

Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home, 864-489-2533, is in charge.

Lucy Dolores Rutland Rice

COPE — Mrs. Lucy Dolores Rutland Rice, 78, a retired nurse from the Bamberg County Hospital and the Savannah River Plant, died Sunday.

Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at Canaan Baptist Church with burial in Double Branch Baptist Church Cemetery in Pinehill Community.

Visitation is 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg.

James Leviner

WALLACE — James Hartley Leviner, age 81, died April 3, 2005, at his home after an illness.

Born in Scotland County, NC, he was the son of the late James Thomas and Ava Louise Leviner. He retired from Johnson Motor Lines and the president of his family trucking company for several years after retirement. He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church where he served on the board of trustees. He was involved in the organization of the Wallace Fire Department and served on the board of directors of the Wallace Water Company. His favorite hobby was racing.

Surviving are his wife Kathleen Driggers Leviner of the home; five sons, James Carlton (Patsy) Leviner, Ronnie (Gail) Leviner, David Leviner and Jerry Wayne Leviner, all of Wallace, Larry Eugene (Sarah) Leviner of Cheraw; 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Louise Hatcher and brother, Owen C. Leviner.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at 3 p.m. at Oak Grove United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at Norton Funeral Home of Cheraw.

Memorials may be made to Helpings Hospice, P.O. Box 474 Bennettsville, SC 29512 or Wallace Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 245 Wallace, SC 29596. Norton Funeral Home of Cheraw is serving the Leviner family.

Jimmy Robinson

COLUMBIA — Services for Mr. Jimmy Bernard Robinson, of 400 Trowbridge Road, will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Full Gospel Word & Worship Center with burial to follow. Visitation is 6 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel.

Mr. Robinson died Thursday, March 31, 2005. Born in Kingston, N.C., he was the son of Sallie Belle Lawhorn Hawk and the late Earl Roland Robinson. He was an honorably retired veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed with Target Distribution Center.

Survivng are his wife, Bridgett Lee Robinson; children, Shartrese Jones, Veandra, Sasha, Shervina and Jimmy B. Robinson, Jr.; stepchildren, Thomas Woodall and Nicole Cleveland; his mother, Sallie Belle Hawk; sisters, Earlene Nobles, Yvonne Meredith and Teresa Robinson-Mitchell; brothers, Danny and Earl Robinson, Jr.

Alexander Carrion Lewis Sr.

ORANGEBURG — Mr. Alexander Carrion Lewis Sr., of 545 Palmetto Parkway, died April 3, 2005, in Methodist Oaks. Mr. Lewis, born March 1, 1918, was the second of nine children born to the late John and Ione (Shuler) Carrion of Cope, South Carolina. He was reared by a devoted aunt, Annie Carrion Lewis and her husband, Lemuel Lewis of Orangeburg, South Carolina. A loyal Claflin alumnus, he received his elementary, high school and college education at Claflin University in Orangeburg from 1924 through 1940. For three of his college years, he lettered in football for the Panthers and received the Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, with a minor in Education, and continued advanced studies at South Carolina State College (University).

Mr. Lewis served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army, including a tour of duty in the Pacific Theatre. In 1947, he was united in marriage to Alba Myers of Orangeburg. They had one son, Alexander C. Lewis Jr., who died in 1990.

For twenty-one years as a masonry carpenter, he employed a workforce of men and trained many unskilled laborers to enter the trade as skilled craftsmen. His years as Director of the Neighborhood Youth Corps program of Orangeburg District Five Schools led to statewide recognition for his leadership in assisting numerous area youth in finding gainful employment and furthering their education. He was a life member of the NAACP and a civil rights activist during the 1960s, signing the petition that led to the desegregation of the city’s public schools.

A lifelong resident of Orangeburg, Mr. Lewis distinguished himself as a member of many organizations, including Claflin University Alumni Association, Claflin University Forerunners Club, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., The Shriners, Edisto Free and Accepted Masons, Post 8166 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the National Education Association, the South Carolina Employees Association and the Vocational Rehabilitation Board of Directors. Mr. Lewis worked as project director of the Orangeburg District Five Neighborhood Youth Corps in-school program from 1967 through 1972. From 1975-1982, he served as a Trustee on the Orangeburg Regional Hospital Board of Directors. In 1997, he was inducted into the Claflin University Hall of Fame. In 1998, he was named Man of the Year by the Orangeburg Chapter of Links, Incorporated. He had been a devoted lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church, having served for many years on the administrative board.

Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife, Dr. Alba M. Lewis; granddaughter, Amber C. Lewis; brothers, Robert (Marie) Carrion, Howard Carrion, Floyd Carrion and Calvin Carrion; sisters-in-law, MaeDe Myers Brown, Barbara Myers Freeman, Doris Myers Deau and Wilhelmina Myers Kershaw; goddaughter, Pennye (Charles) Hamilton; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.

The Omega Omega service of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 6 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1195 Amelia St., NE, Orangeburg, South Carolina.

Memorial services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, Thursday, April 7, 2005, at 11 a.m. Bythewood Funeral Home is in charge of the services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Claflin University Scholarship Fund or Trinity United Methodist Church Endowment Foundation.
