William Collins

LEXINGTON — Services for William S. Collins, 61, of Lexington, will be held at 3pm Wednesday in Riverland Hills Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Dr. Ed Carney and Rev. Phillip McNeil. Burial will follow at Furman Matthews Cemetery, Batesburg, SC (Saluda County). The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Tuesday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to Riverland Hills Baptist Church Building Fund; or to the New Voice Club, c/o Arlene Jones, 629 Boone Town Road, Kershaw, SC 29067; or to Furman Matthews Cemetery, c/o Raymond Miller, 264 Patchwork Rd., Batesburg, SC 29006.

Mr. Collins died Sunday, April 3, 2005. Born in Whigham, GA, he was the son of William D. and Helen Hester Collins. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served with the Big Red One in Vietnam. He was the recipient of a number of meritorious awards including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1960 Device, Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Marksman (M-16), Expert (M-14 and .45 Cal), 2 Overseas Bars, ARCOM. Mr. Collins attended Anderson Junior College and the University of South Carolina. He was a member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church and was owner/operator of Collins and Sons Jewelry for 22 years.

Surviving, in addition to his parents of Batesburg, are his wife, Cheryl Black Collins of Lexington; daughter, Christie Collins and her fiance, Richie Penland of Greenville; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Stacy Collins of Greenville; sister, Gloria Shelton of Columbia; brother, Todd Collins of Batesburg; maternal grandmother, Daisy Hester of Whigham, GA; grandchildren, Slade Collins and Chase Collins.

Michael Cardone

COLUMBIA — Service with military rites for Michael Alphonso Cardone, 88, will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Greenlawn Mausoleum Chapel with entombment in the mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mr. Cardone died Sunday, April 3, 2005. Born in Peekskill, N.Y., he was a son of the late Pasquale and Loretta Schiavo Cardone. He retired from the U.S. Army after twenty-one and a half years. He had also retired from Prudential Life Insurance. He was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.

Surviving are his wife, Tracy Capilos Cardone; sons, Philip P. Cardone of Columbia and Michael Cardone of Lodi, N.J.; daughters, Michele Sexton of Columbia and Loretta Derusso of Lodi, N.J.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Sara Cowles

COLUMBIA — Service for Sara Davis Cowles, 83, will be held Thursday at 3 p.m at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday 6-8 p.m at the funeral home.

Mrs. Cowles, wife of the late Andrew Carson Cowles, died Monday, April 4, 2005. Born in Greer, she was a daughter of the late George A. and Pearl Hendricks Davis. She was a member of Rosewood Baptist Church.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Carson L. Cowles and Tere Walker of Gaston; daughters and son-in-law, Susan C. and Clay Hargis of Gaston and Amelia “Amy” Roof of Columbia; grandchildren, Kasey, Amber, Dylann, Travis, Andrew, Kelsey and Brittany; and two half-sisters. She was predeceased by six brothers and sisters.

The family extends special thanks to Bill Shockey for the love and caring of Mrs. Cowles.

Shirley Finucan

SUMMERVILLE — Shirley Locklair Blume Finucan, widow of James Blume and Edward Finucan, died April 2, 2005. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. today, April 5, 2005, at Bethany United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Summerville Cemetery. Arrangements by Parks Funeral Home, 130 W. 1st North Street, Summerville, SC 29483.

Blanche Spears Hunter

SUMTER — A memorial service for Blanche Spears Hunter, 87, widow of Richard Hunter, will be noon Thursday in Walker Cemetery. Job’s Mortuary is in charge. Born in Sumter to Rev. Alonzo and Mary Hewson Spears, she died October 23, 2004. She had lived in New York for many years. Surviving: nieces, Augusta Jones, Sandra Pearson; grand nieces, grand nephews, cousins, godson, loving friends.

Rosa Jacobs

HOPKINS — Funeral services for Mrs. Rosa Lee Thomas Jacobs of 3744 Leesburge Road will be held 10 A.M. Wednesday April 6, 2005, at Veighle Chapel Baptist Church of Cola. Interment will follow in Serenity Gardens/Greenlawn, Columbia, S.C. The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 4, 7-8, with visitation 4-9, at the funeral home.

J.P. Holley Funeral Home, Garners Ferry Road Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Jacobs died March 30, 2005. Born in Congree, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Jerry and Judan Adams Thomas. She was a member of Eternal Life Christian Center in Somerset, N.J., and attended Veighle Chapel Baptist Church of Columbia, S.C.

She is survived by her husband, Willie Jacobs II; sons, Jerry Thomas and Kenneth Phillip Jacobs; brothers John (Lake), Isom and Irving Thomas; sister Lucille Thomas.

Jestine Dewalt

PROSPERITY — Services and burial for Jestine Dewalt, 85, 2 p.m. Wednesday: Mt. Moriah AME Church. F.B. Pratt & Son Funeral Home, Newberry, is in charge. Born in Lexington Co. to David and Trophine Long Dewalt, she died April 1, 2005. Surviving: son, Curtis Glasgow; siblings, Martha Ruff, Verda Hair, Emma Lee Hiller, Polly Hampton, Avie Davenport, Rosine, Willie, Aaron Dewalt, Evelyn Brooks.

William M. Mealing

LEXINGTON — William M. Mealing, 71, of 164 South Hampton Road, Lexington, died March 30, 2005, in Lexington. He was born in Edgefield to the late Cora Bell and Mark Mealing. Services will be held at 11 a.m. April 6, 2005, at Lexington Funeral Home with burial in St. Paul Baptist Church Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Freda Bonner.

Survivors: daughter, Vanessa Harvin of New York; sister, Marie Mealing of Lexington; brother, Thomas Mealing of Lake City; grandson, Terhon McCan of New York.

The family will receive friends from 9 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lexington Funeral Home and other times at 164 South Hampton Road, Lexington, S.C. Lexington Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge.

Gladys Haselden

SUMTER — Services for Gladys J. Haselden, 89, member of Grace Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star, widow of James Haselden, 11 a.m. Wednesday: Sumter Cemetery. Visitation 6-8 tonight: Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home. Born in Sumter to W. Clarence and Annie Newman Jones, she died April 3, 2005. Surviving: son, Richard; brother, W.C. Jones Jr.; grandchild, great-grandchildren.

Kittie Elvira Jackson

NEWBERRY — Services with burial for Kittie Elvira Jackson, 94, are 2 p.m. (1 p.m. viewing) Thursday at Oak Grove Presbyterian Church. Visitation is 7 p.m. Wednesday at Wilson Funeral Home. Born in Newberry Co. to John and Bessie Schumpert, she died April 2, 2005. Surviving: children, Malverse Jackson Jr., Bessie Nealous, Eugenia Jackson, Patricia Garmany; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sister, Beulah Mayers.

Thelma Crock Jordan

PELION — Memorial services for Thelma June Crock Jordan, 83, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday April 6, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Jordan widow of Clyde Burton Jordon died Saturday, April 2, 2005. Born in Lacross, Kansas, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Prudence Berry Crock. She was an auditor with Belk’s Department Store, and also a Rivot Girl during WWII.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna Rudnicki of Pelion; son, Chuck Jordan of Pelion; thirteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carolyne Jordan Laurel.

Calhoun H. Strickland

ORANGEBURG — Calhoun Harold Strickland, 77, of 519 Willington Drive, died Monday morning, April 4, 2005, in The Regional Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church with Rev. Julian Ford officiating. Dukes-Harley Funeral Home is in charge.

Mr. Strickland was born in Oakboro, NC, a son of the late Paul and Emma Crayton Strickland. He had retired from Spartan Grain and Mill Company with 39 years of service. Mr. Strickland was a founder and co-owner of Orangeburg Milling Company. He was a 1950 graduate of Clemson University. He was a former member of the Optimist Club of Orangeburg and Toastmaster International. Mr. Strickland was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and of the E.S. Jones Sunday School Class. He was a U.S. Army veteran and Paratrooper in the 11th Air Borne Division during WWII.

Survivors: wife, Mrs. Lois Burgess Strickland of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Julie S. Horton (Steve), Moncks Corner; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael B. Strickland (Tangye), Asheboro, NC, Paul R. Strickland (Vicky), Orangeburg, SC; sister, Mrs. Justine F. Allen (Reece), Albemarle, NC; six grandchildren, Maggie and Thomas Horton, Moncks Corner, Seth and Jacob Strickland, Asheboro, NC, Aaron and Olivia Strickland, Orangeburg.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home. At other times, friends may call at the residence and Dukes-Harley Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to: St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 1356 Amelia St., Orangeburg, SC 29115 or to a charity of one’s choice.
