James Reed

SPRINGFIELD — Services with burial for Deacon James “Buddy” Reed, 85, are 4 p.m. (viewing 3 p.m.) Friday at Samaria Missionary Baptist Church. Visitation is 3-7 p.m. today at Fulmer’s Funeral Home. Born in Orangeburg Co. to Arthur and Rebecca Milhouse Reed, he died April 3, 2005. Surviving: wife, Louise; sons, Larry, Clarence Tyler; sisters, Lillie, Minnie Robinson; granddaughters, Iesha and Myeshia.

Thomas J. Howard

FLORENCE — Thomas Jackson Howard, 62, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, in Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Mr. Howard was the son of the late Beatrice Sexton Howard and Carl Wylie Howard of York, S.C. He graduated from The Citadel in 1965 and was a member of G Company.

During his working career, Mr. Howard was associated with Young Pecan Company for 24 years. He retired as Executive Vice-President of Young Pecan Sales Corporation in 1991. Later, he pursued an insurance career and was associated with Kenneth Charles Agency of Florence. He was also owner of the Pecan Place of S.C. and Hob Nob Gourmet of Florence. Mr. Howard served as secretary of the National Pecan Sheller’s Association, and was a past president of the South Carolina Food Industry Association. He was a member and past president of the Florence Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was associated with the Boy Scouts of America in Florence early in his career. He served as chairman of the Manna House Board of Directors for several terms. He was also a member of the founding committee, which brought Hospice of the Pee Dee to Florence, also serving as a member of the first Board of Directors. Mr. Howard was a very active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Florence. He was past president of the Men of the Church, past chairman of the Board of Deacons, and Clerk of the Session for several terms. He also taught seventh and eighth grade youth in Sunday School for over 30 years. His relationship with his students through the years was one of the highlights of his life. He was a member of the Tuesday and Thursday Men’s Bible Study Breakfast Group. Mr. Howard was an avid fisherman and hunter, and was a member of the Wahee Hunt Club. He loved the solitude of the great outdoors. Tommy never met a stranger. He considered his greatest wealth to be his family and many friends of all ages.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Marian Young Howard of the home, and their three daughters, Virginia Neale Howard of Brevard, N.C., Laura Hunter Howard of New York City, N.C., and Marian Elizabeth Howard Chapman and her husband, Thad William Chapman, of Florence. He is also survived by two brothers, Robert Sexton Howard and his wife, Ann, and James David Howard, both of York, S.C. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church Youth Division, 700 Park Avenue, Florence, SC 29501; or to McLeod Hospice, 555 E. Cheves Street, Florence, SC 29506.

Pauline Goodall

STATE COLLEGE, Penn. — Pauline Hinton Hawley Goodall, of Foxdale Village, died April 5, 2005, in Mount Nittany Medical Center. She died as she had lived, on her own terms and at her own time, quietly, surrounded by family who loved her.

She was born on June 13, 1912, in Mebane, N.C., the daughter of Dr. Frank Morton Hawley and Helen Elizabeth Sheep who, with her brother Frank M. Hawley, Jr., preceded her in death. She attended schools in Missouri, South Carolina and Virginia as her father followed his career as a Presbyterian minister. She graduated in 1932 with an A.B. degree from Queens College, Charlotte, N.C. Thereafter, she taught school in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. During the second World War, she was a confidential statistician for Consolidated-Vultec Aircraft in Elizabeth City, N.C. Afterwards, she worked as a Caseworker for the Welfare Department in Clarendon County, S.C.

In 1946, she married Henry Amos Goodall, an Army dentist, who retired to Columbia, South Carolina, in 1966 and became an educator. In 1992, three years after his death, she moved to State College. She was the mother of H. Amos Goodall, Jr. (born in 1948), who survives with his wife, Casey, and her granddaughter, Hawley, age 28 and grandson Christian, age 23.

During Col. Goodall’s military career, she did volunteer work for the Red Cross, Army Community Service and the Army thrift shop. She had been a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Providence Presbyterian Church, and at the time of her death, she belonged to University Baptist and Brethren Church of State College.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Henry A. and Pauline H. Goodall Scholarship Fund for Dental Hygienists at Midlands Technical College, P.O. Box 2408, Columbia, SC 29202.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel with interment in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at 12 o’clock noon prior to the service. There will also be a memorial service at University Baptist and Brethren Church, State College on April 16, at 11 a.m.

Lucile Jumper Womack

CHARLOTTE — “Miss Lucy,” 55, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005. She was born on September 11, 1949, in Springfield, S.C., to the late William Henry Jumper and Harriette Hair Jumper. Ms. Womack was a Senior Estate Planning Specialist with Solomon Smith Barney, a member of Stough Memorial Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir and taught Sunday School to the children, youth and adults. She was a licensed Emergency Medical Technician in the state of South Carolina for over 10 years and an ardent supporter of the University of South Carolina Gamecocks, where she attended college.

Ms. Womack is survived by her children, Elke Womack Slack and her husband, Ted of Charlotte, Ashley Womack Cloninger and her husband, Dan of Belmont, and William Henry Womack of Charlotte; her sister, Ruth Jumper Fowler and her husband, Gerald of Greenville, GA; her brothers, Harold R. Still and his wife, Diane of Springfield, S.C. and Robert Still and his wife Fran of Cincinnati, OH; her grandchildren, Beka Grace Cloninger and Emma Kathryn Cloninger.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 8, 2005, at Stough Memorial Baptist Church with Pastor Chris Gulledge, Pastor Bruce League and Pastor Steve All officiating. Burial will be in Springfield, S.C., at a later date. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Stough Memorial Baptist Church, 705 Lakeview Drive, Pineville, NC 28134.

Gregory Frank Forrest

GREENVILLE — Gregory Frank Forrest, 56, passed away peacefully at home on April 4, 2005, in the company of his family after an extended illness.

Born on June 22, 1948, in Rochester, NY, Greg was the son of the late Josiah and Lorna Forrest. He was a graduate of the State University of New York with a B.S. in economics and history and a Master’s in counseling. He was a national accounts manager for several telecommunication companies and retired in 2004. Gregarious in nature, Greg was well known for his sense of humor and quick-witted personality. A loving husband, father, and brother, Greg lived life to the fullest. He also found much enjoyment in the game of golf.

Survivors include his wife Sandra; daughters, Dr. Jennifer L. Baker and husband Kiel of Columbia, and Keli M. Gambrell of Baton Rouge, LA; son, Davis R. Baxley of Columbia; brother, Stephen Forrest and wife Judy of Tega Cay; and two nephews.

Visitation will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 16, 2005 at John Knox Presbyterian Church with memorial services following at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to GHS Hospice, 255 Enterprise Rd, Greenville, SC 29615 or John Knox Presbyterian Church, 35 Shannon Dr, Greenville, SC 29615.

Harper Memorial Chapel of Taylors is serving the family.

Elaine Battle

LEXINGTON — Services for Elaine Whitman Battle, 90, of Lexington, will be held at 2pm Friday in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, officiated by Rev. Seth Yi. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-9pm Thursday at the funeral home and other times at 440 Kitti Wake Dr., West Columbia. Memorials may be made to Arsenal Hill Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Battle, widow of Guerry F. Battle, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2005. She had been a resident at Oak Leaf Village for the past 3 ˝ years. Born June 30, 1914, in Lexington County, she was the daughter of the late Edwin D. and Ethel King Whitman. Mrs. Battle was a member of Arsenal Hill Presbyterian Church. She was retired from SCE&G and was a member of Woodmen of the World.

Surviving are her sister, Ethelyn W. Beaty of West Columbia; brothers, Everard D. Whitman of Lexington and Edsel Ford Whitman of West Columbia; numerous nephews and nieces, great nephews and nieces, and great-great nephews and nieces. Mrs. Battle was predeceased by her brother, Edwin C. Whitman; and sisters, Elgie W. Cato and Eleanor E. Whitman.

Carl Singleton

ANDERSON — Mr. Carl LeRoy Singleton, age 84, of Anderson, S.C., died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, in Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Toccoa, Ga., on April 17, 1920, he was an Anderson businessman and owner of Singleton Frame and Wheel Alignment Shop. He was a U.S Air Force WW II veteran, having served in the 8th Air Force, and was stationed in Manchester, England. He retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1970. He was a Mason, Shriner and a member of Boulevard Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth C. Singleton; daughters, Carolyn S. Dorrell of Columbia, S.C. and Nancy S. Strong of Anderson, S.C.; two grandsons, Jody Dorrell of Bluffton, S.C. and Scott Strong of Anderson, S.C.; one granddaughter, Lori D. Kersey of Nashville, TN; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Ed Singleton, of Anderson, S.C. and one sister, Mrs. C.O. Graham, of Pendleton, S.C.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by Dr. Johnny F. McKinney.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Boulevard Baptist Church Christian Activity Center, 700 Boulevard, Anderson, SC 29621.

The McDougald Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Richard Walker

COLUMBIA — Entered into eternal rest on April 5, 2005, Richard Dewey Walker. Residence, Columbia, SC. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral services in Adams Run Baptist Church, Friday, April 8, 2005, at One O’clock. Interment, Christ St. Paul’s Episcopal Churchyard, Meggett, SC. Friends may call at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., West Ashley Chapel, Thursday from Six until Eight O’clock.

Richard was born in Charleston, SC, December 11, 1946, the son of Edward D. Walker, Jr. and Hazel Mullinax Walker. He was a Vietnam veteran who served in the Marine Corps, attended USC, and graduated from The Citadel with a degree in Engineering. He was a member of Adams Run Baptist Church.

Surviving are his mother of Adams Run, SC; 1 son, Richard Shawn Walker of Summerville, SC; 1 sister, Lynn W. Burnett of Adams Run, SC; 2 brothers, Kenneth E. Walker of Adams Run, SC, and Keith A. Walker of James Island, SC; 2 grandchildren, Gabriel and Madison Walker.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, North Charleston, SC 29406.

Charles L. “Charlie” Snyder

GASTON — Funeral services for Charles L. “Charlie” Snyder, 76, of Gaston, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 8, 2005, in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, officiated by Dr. Donald F. West. Graveside services and burial will follow at 2 p.m. Friday in Grandview Memorial Gardens in Rock Hill, SC. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 111 Executive Pointe Boulevard, Columbia, SC 29210.

Charlie was born May 10, 1928, in Chester County, a son of the late Mary Ella and John Landrum Snyder. Charlie was a veteran, having served two tours of duty in the United States Army. He retired as a homebuilder in 2000 due to health reasons. Prior to his decline in health, Charlie was active in his church, Broadacres Baptist, serving as a deacon. He enjoyed videotaping sermons and weddings for church shut-ins, family and friends. During Charlie’s five years at NHC, he made many friends, both staff and patients alike.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Evelyn Grace Snyder of Columbia; daughter, Evelyn Diane LaVanway and husband, Jim of Summerville; son, Charles Douglas Snyder and wife, Sherry of Cayce; brother, Arthur Snyder of Rock Hill; seven grandchildren, Lynn Mizzell, Charles Snyder, Jr., Cori Brittain, Karen Stitely, James LaVanway, and Michelle Cruz. His ten great-grandchildren are Blaise Bailey and Jaelin LaVanway, Courtney Mizzell, Katie and Blake Stitely, Justin Nicholson and Heather Mizzell, Joshua, Matthew and Stephen Cruz.

Charlie was predeceased by a son, Franklin Eugene Snyder and a daughter, Edith Lorraine Snyder; two brothers, William Snyder, Richard Snyder; and a grandson, Lee Nelson.

The family expresses their appreciation to NHC of Lexington and Tri-County Hospice for their compassion and care. Although Charlie never gave up wanting to return home to his wife, both organizations did everything possible in their power to make him comfortable and mobile prior to his passing.
