Lorene Mefford

COLUMBIA — Service for Lorene Mefford, 89, will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Joe Cal Watson, with burial to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Nephews will serve as pallbearers, and members of the Wesley Fidelity Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be Saturday 5-7 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Epworth Children’s Home or Main Street United Methodist Church.

Miss Mefford died Wednesday, April 6, 2005. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Ollie and Blanche Champion Mefford. She had retired as a bookkeeper with Epworth Children’s Home. Miss Mefford was a long-time Avon sales representative, and a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and the Wesley Fidelity Sunday School Class.

Surviving are her sisters Ethel Champion Mefford, Ruth Halloran, and Mary E. Newby and her husband Bruce, all of Columbia; brother and sister-in-law Ollie and Nelda Mefford of Columbia; niece Betty Hollingsworth and her husband Paul; brother-in-law John T. Watkins of Columbia; and numerous nieces and nephews. Miss Mefford was predeceased by her sister Annie Mae Watkins.

Marie Gibson Payne

GREENVILLE — Marie Gibson Payne, 87, wife of the late Lt. Col. Joseph L. Payne Jr., USAF (Ret.), died April 6, 2005.

Born in Greenville, S.C., she was a daughter of the late William Coleman Gibson Jr. and Ora Lee Tanner Gibson.

Mrs. Payne was a member of the Greenville Woman’s Club, Greenville Chapter 51 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Nathaniel Green Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the John Boswell Chapter of the Colonial Dames XVII Century, Americans of Royal Descent, Colonial Order of the Crown, Most Noble Order of the Garter, and the National Society of the Magna Carta Dames. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Covenant Sunday School Class.

Surviving are her two daughters, Joan S. Mikell and Ann S. Yakin, both of Greenville; her two sons, Joseph L. Payne, III of Cleveland, S.C., and William G. Payne of Greenville; one sister, Ora G. League and her husband, Col. Miles Richard League, USAF (Ret.), of Greenville; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sisters, Georgia W. Blackwell and Betty G. Brunson.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 9, 2005, at 10 a.m. at the Harper Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Randolph Kowalski and the Rev. Stan Johnson officiating. The committal service will follow in Springwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive.

Members from the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the American Revolution and Colonial Dames will serve as Honorary Escort.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church Missions Fund, 200 W. Washington St., Greenville, SC 29601.

The families are at their respective residences.

Charlie Scott

COLUMBIA — Services for Mr. Charlie Scott will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday at The Greater St. Luke Baptist Church with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel, is in charge. Surviving are his daughters, Margaret Jones, Lena Hunter, and Celestine Scott; 9 grandchildren; 19 grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild.

Jennie Burton

COLUMBIA — Service for Jennie Dean Burton, 91, will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel with entombment to follow in the mausoleum. The family will receive friends after the service at the residence. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Palmetto Chapter. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

Mrs. Burton died Thursday, April 7, 2005. Born in Williston, N.C., she was a daughter of the late LeRoy and Rosa Strawbridge. Mrs. Burton was a graduate of Olympia High School. For more than sixty years she owned and operated Dean’s Beauty Shop. An avid dancer, she was associated with the Fred Astaire Dance Studio and received numerous awards for her dance accomplishments. Mrs. Burton’s yard was a showplace; she was a successful gardener whose lawn and flowers were admired by all. She loved music and cooking, and her family and friends; she was generous and giving to everyone.

Surviving are her son, William (Billy) G. Dean of Columbia; daughter, Nancy Dean Posey of Columbia; brother, Carl Wayne Strawbridge; grandchildren, Jennie Dean Martin, Patty Dean Barnhill, Billie Jo Dean Simmons, and William Michael Dean, all of Lexington, Mary Ellen Bowden Lackey of Chapin, and John David Bowden of Augusta; and fourteen great-grandchildren. Mrs. Burton was predeceased by her sister, Johnnie Mae Brogden, and her brother, LeRoy (Buddy) Strawbridge.

Leland C. Munn

ORANGEBURG — Leland Cain Munn, of 410 Canon Bridge Road, died Thursday morning April 7th, at his residence. Service is 2 p.m. Saturday April 9th, at First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Terry Peele officiating. Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery

Dukes-Harley Funeral Home is in charge. Mr. Munn was born in Florence County, a son of the late John D. and Bertha DeWitt Munn. He was a retired jeweler from Lynch-Munn Jewelers. Mr. Munn was a member of the American Legion Post #4. He was a Mason and Shriner. Mr. Munn was a member of First Baptist Church, Deacon, Usher and Sunday School record keeper. He was U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II, and a recipient of the Purple Heart. Survivors: wife: Mrs. Christine Baldwin Munn, of the home; daughter and son-in-law: Mrs. Kayne (Alfred) Gantt, Neeses; son and daughter-in-law: Mac (Barbara) Munn, Waycross, GA; 2 granddaughters: Kerry Gantt, Falls Church, VA, Kimberly Lawrence (Todd), Greer; a number of of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 6 - 8 p.m. Friday evening at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home. At other times friends may call at the residence and funeral home. Memorials may be made to: First Baptist Church, 1245 Russell St., Orangeburg, SC 29115.

Malcolm M. Jordan

GALIVANTS FERRY — Mr. Malcolm Monroe Jordan, 89, widower of Margaret White Jordan, died Thursday, April 7, 2005, in Carolinas Hospital System in Florence after an illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at Aynor United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dennis J. Mardis officiating. Burial will follow in Aynor Cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Mr. Jordan was born August 29, 1915, in Horry County, a son of the late Cordie Bradley Jordan and the late Pearl Lee Gore Jordan. Mr. Jordan was a retired farmer. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. He was a member of the Aynor American Legion. Mr. Jordan was a member of Aynor United Methodist Church.

Surviving Mr. Jordan are a daughter, Diane Jordan Welsh and her husband Michael Francis of Florence; 2 sons, James Malcolm and his wife Lynn Frye of Galivants Ferry and David Earl and his wife Diana Stroud of Galivants Ferry; 7 granddaughters, Robin, Jordi, Rheney, Shay, Carla, Stephanie and Ginny; a grandson, James; a great-grandson, Arthur Rabon; 2 brothers, Asa B. Jordan of Galivants Ferry and William B. Jordan of Galivants Ferry; and 2 sisters, Hilda J. Dawsey of Gastonia, N.C. and Helen Editha J. Robbins of Florence.

Mr. Jordan was predeceased by 4 brothers and a sister, C.B. Jordan Jr., James Osgood Jordan, Edna Earle J. Ikner, Clifton Ansel Jordan and Jack Miles Jordan.

Memorials may be made to the Aynor United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 348, Aynor, S.C. 29511.

Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6 til 8 p.m. at Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Tommie Summers

COLUMBIA — Services for Mr. Tommie Summers, 82, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Leevy’s Funeral Home Chapel. Wake services will be held 6-8 p.m. this evening at Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel. Surviving are his son, Allen P. Summers; two daughters, Iva Gist and Thomascina “Tina” Perrin; brother, Dr. Richard Summers; two sisters, Willer Dean Boozer and Mildred Hines; uncle, Leon Summers; his very best friend, Elma Delores McFadden.

April Kahler Atkinson

HARTSVILLE — Memorial services for April Kahler Atkinson age 41, who died April 6, will be held Saturday, April 9, at 11:00 from the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service. April was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Herbert and Kay Sparks Kahler. Surviving are daughters, Lydia Kahler and Rachel Lynn Robertson, both of Hartsville; 1 sister, Sherry Johnson, Hartsville; 2 stepsons, Jonathon and Jason Robertson, both of Hartsville.

Elizabeth Wilkerson

WEST COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Mrs. Elizabeth McLendon Wilkerson, 90, of West Columbia, will be held 1 o’clock Friday afternoon, April 8, 2005, at Crossroads World Outreach Center with Pastor Jesse D. Simmon and Pastor Robert F. Causey officiating. Interment will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Crossroads World Outreach Center Building Fund, 2606 Emanuel Church Road, West Columbia, SC 29170.

Mrs. Wilkerson, widow of William P. Wilkerson, died Wednesday, April 06, 2005. Born in Fort Mill, SC, she was a daughter of the late Elisha and Ella Feltz McLendon. She was a member of Crossroads World Outreach Church.

Survivors include her sons, Ronald W. Wilkerson and his wife Willie N. of Land O’ Lakes, FL, and Levern Wilkerson and his wife Ruth, grandchild, William P. Wilkerson, great-grandchild, Samantha Wilkerson, all of West Columbia; sisters, Margaret LeGrand of Columbia, Kathleen LeGrand of Winnsboro, Nellie Nannah of West Columbia and Anita Powell of Flint, MI. Mrs. Wilkerson was preceded in death by her sister, Bessie Dukes; brothers, Hampton, Blease and Baxter McLendon.

Doc Copes

FAIRFAX — Services for Doc Copes, 49, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday (wake 6-8 tonight )at Greater Bethel AME Church with burial in Gillette Cemetery. Riley’s Funeral Home, Hampton Chapel, is in charge. Mr. Copes died April 1, 2005. Surviving are son, Jamar Tokley; mother, Ruby Copes; siblings, Maggie Holmes, Beatrice Mays, Rebecca Drayton, Brooker, Verdell, Gussie and Rooservelt Copes; 1 grandchild.

Seth W. Weathers

BRANCHVILLE — Mr. Seth W. Weathers, 93 years of age, of 3260 Cattle Creek Rd., died Thursday, April 7, 2005.

Mr. Weathers was born in Bowman, a son of the late William O. “Bill” Weathers and Carrie Whitsell Weathers. He was the widower of the late Mamie C. Weathers. Mr. Weathers was a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, the Adult Sunday School class, and a lifelong resident of the community.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, April 9, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, with the Rev. Andy Lyons and Rev. Bobby Ethridge officiating. Burial will be in the church yard. The casket will be placed in the church one hour before services. The nephews will be pallbearers.

Mr. Weathers is survived by four stepchildren, Alton (Lois) Felder of Arden, NC, John Robert (Ann) Felder, Joan (Bobby) Ethridge, both of Branchville, and Sandra (Johnny) Short of Goose Creek; two sisters, Blanche W. Whetstone and Sue W. (Charles) Shuler, both of Holly Hill; one brother, Ed M. (Etta Maye) Weathers of Maggie Valley, NC; one brother-in-law, Billy Warren of Augusta, and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

The family will receive friends Friday, April 8, 2005, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Ott Funeral Home in Branchville. Friends may call at the residence at all other times.

Memorials may be made to the Mt. Tabor Cemetery fund.

Sadie Watts

CAMDEN — Funeral services for Sadie Tidwell Watts, 82, will be held on Sunday, April 10, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Beaverdam Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Robbie Shivar and Rev. Homer Hinson will officiate. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 9, 2005, from 6-8 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Mrs. Watts, widow of George Cyrus Watts, passed away Thursday, April 7, 2005. She had been a resident at Pinedale Residential Center for the past six years. Born December 16, 1922, in Kershaw County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Fletcher and Ellen Elliott Tidwell. Mrs. Watts had retired from Rose’s Department Store, and was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church.

Surviving are sons, Gerald Watts and his wife, Brenda, of Camden, George Watts and his wife, Jennie, of Cassatt, and Bernie Watts and his wife, Karen, of Bishopville; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; sister, Kathleen Mays of Savannah, Ga. She was predeceased by 13 sisters and brothers.
