James Marvin “Skim” Walters

REEVESVILLE — James Marvin “Skim” Walters, 83, of 804 Cross Creek Road, Reevesville, died suddenly at his residence Thursday April 7, 2005. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Old St. George Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Marcengill and Rev. Stephen Crosby officiating. Burial will follow in the Heaton Cemetery, Reevesville. Pallbearers will be Terry Walters, Dean Walters, Dickie Phalen, Jimmy Jackson, David Mizell, and Boone Walters. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at Bryant Funeral Home, 607 North Parler Avenue, St. George. Mr. Walters was born September 25, 1921, in Reevesville, a son of late James Mary and Emma Reeves Walters. He was a Navy veteran of WW II and a retired ship fitter from Charleston Navel Shipyard. A member of Old St. George Baptist Church he was an avid fisherman and gardener. He was predeceased by brothers, Virgil Walters and Quillie Walters, sisters, Mary Walters and Susie Lee Hartzog. Surviving are his wife, Helen Wagers Walters, of the home; a son and his wife, Van Douglas and Ima Jean Walters, Branchville; a daughter and her husband, Deborah and Bruce Hamilton, Columbia; grandchildren, Audrey (Justin) Cook, Tucson, AZ, Amy Walters, College of Charleston, Jason Walters, Branchville, Grant Hamilton, Columbia; sisters, Vera Murray Murdaugh, St. George and Blanche Mizell, Round O. Memorials may be made to Heaton Cemetery Fund, c/o Rosie McAlhany, 930 Cross Creek Road, Reevesville, SC 29471 or Old St. George Baptist Church, 509 Old St. George Road, St. George, SC 29477.

Boyd Keisler

LEXINGTON — Graveside services for Boyd Keisler will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in Shiloh United Methodist Cemetery with the Rev. Randy Rush officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Barr-Price Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Memorials made to Shiloh United Methodist Church, 1000 Spring Hill Road, Gilbert, SC 29054.

Mr. Keisler died Wednesday. Born in Lexington County a son of the late Norman and Pearle Shealy Keisler. He was a member of Shiloh United Methodist.

Surviving are his wife, Edna Gable Keisler; sons, Scott Keisler (Nancy) of Lexington, Douglas Keisler, Columbia; stepson, Richard Walta of Barnwell; daughter, Kay Keisler (Dale Spires) of Lexington; brothers, Homer Keisler of Leesville and Herbert Keisler of Gilbert; 4 grandchildren; 4 stepgrandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Irene Ballington Keisler.

Paul Michael “Mickey” Urbanek Sr.

WEST COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Paul Michael “Mickey” Urbanek, Sr., 57, will be held at 1 o’clock Saturday, April 9, 2005, at West Columbia First Church of the Nazarene, with The Reverend Bill Harmon officiating. Interment will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum with Military Rites. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock this (Friday) evening at Shives Funeral Home in Columbia. Serving as pallbearers will be James “Yankee” Smith, Curtis Martin, Rodney Bayne, Danny Campbell, Sonny Corwell, and Tony Jennings. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, S.C. Division, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mr. Urbanek went to be with his wonderful Lord and Forgiving Savior, Wednesday, April 6, 2005. Born in Richland County, he was a son of the late Paul Charles and Annie Elizabeth Parker Urbanek. He served in the U.S. Navy fighting during Vietnam, where he served on the USS Valley Forge.

Mr. Urbanek was employed at Dixianna Steel Company of West Columbia during the 1980s where he assisted in the architectural design and steel construction of numerous apartment and office buildings, malls and crosswalks throughout the Columbia area. During the 1990s, he was employed by the S.C. Department of Corrections as Construction Supervisor assisting in the architectural design and steel construction of various Correctional Institutions and State Office buildings throughout South Carolina. During his 35 year profession in the Iron and Steel industry, he assisted many young people in developing their own craft of the Iron and Steel business, many of whom have expressed their gratitude for the assistance he provided in helping them establish their own career today.

Surviving are his loving wife, Sherian H. Urbanek of West Columbia; daughter and son-in-law, Sherian DeAnn Lucas and Paul Anthony (Tony) Lucas, Sr., of Lexington; sons and daughters-in-law, Paul Michael (Mike) Urbanek, Jr. and Stacey B. Urbanek also of Lexington; Charles (Chuck) Eugene Urbanek and Maria J. Urbanek of West Columbia; Johnny Shane Urbanek, Sr. and Deirdre K. Urbanek of Swansea; nine grandchildren, his grandsons include Paul Anthony Lucas, Jr. and Thomas (Tommy) Michael Lucas of Lexington; Johnny Shane Urbanek, Jr. and Timothy Mitchell Urbanek of Swansea; his granddaughters include Hayley Karissa Lucas and Jessica Angelica (Angel) Urbanek of Lexington; Tristan Shea Urbanek and Braylin Elise Urbanek of West Columbia and Lauryn Rose Urbanek of Swansea; a brother, Charles Jackson (Jackie) Urbanek of West Columbia; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and his loving canine companions “Casper” and “Something”. He was preceded in death by his brother, Johnny McElrath and sisters, Barbara Pate and Peggy Stough.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel of Lexington Medical Center and Providence Hospital MCCU for their excellent care during this critical time in their lives, especially Dr. Shonda Asaad. Also, special gratitude goes to Pastor Bill Harmon for his compassion, devotion and faithfulness throughout this difficult journey. In addition, Mrs. Urbanek would like to thank her wonderful co-workers for their compassion and constant support during this time.

Albert James Maddox Jr.

AIKEN — A memorial service for Mr. Albert James Maddox, Jr., retired engineer, will be held Saturday, April 9, 2005, at 11 A.M. at George Funeral Homes, Historic Downtown Chapel, 211 Park Ave., SW, Aiken, S.C., with Reverend Doug Puckett officiating.

Mr. Maddox, 76, of Aiken, S.C., died Tuesday night, April 5, 2005, at his home.

Born in Tallassee, AL, a son of the late Albert James Maddox, Sr. and the late Dolores Maddox, Mr. Maddox had been a resident of Aiken, S.C., since 1952 where he retired from Dupont in 1989 and Westinghouse in 1991. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Graniteville, S.C. He was a 1949 graduate of Auburn University and proudly served his country in the United States Army where he obtained the rank of Captain.

He is survived by his wife of over fifty-years, Anita P. Maddox, son, Brian Todd (Kate) Maddox, Fox River Grove, IL; daughters, Erin (Mike) Groh, Mt. Pleasant, S.C. and Tinalea (John) Hamilton, Corpus Christi, TX; brother, Robert Earl “Buck” (Ann) Maddox, Swansea, S.C.; and six grandchildren, Samantha and Sydney Maddox, Hunter and Patrick Hamilton, Kelly and Todd Groh.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church P.O Box 276, Graniteville, SC 29829, Mended Hearts, Inc., (Aiken Hearts) P.O Box 976, Aiken, SC 29802, and Hitchcock Hospice, 690 Medical Park Drive, Aiken, SC 29801.

Betty M. Lawless

WEST COLUMBIA — Graveside services for Betty M. Lawless, 81, of West Columbia, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, in Southland Memorial Gardens, officiated by Rev. Albert Cox. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. Memorials may be made to Greene Street United Methodist Church, 1106 Greene Street, Columbia, SC 29201.

Mrs. Lawless, widow of Thomas C. “T.C.” Lawless, died Thursday, April 7, 2005. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Martin Luther and Betsy Rutledge Moore. Mrs. Lawless was a member of Greene Street United Methodist Church and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Carlyle Wood of Ridgeway; sons and daughter-in-law, Bob and Clara Clark of Lexington, Ricky Lawless of West Columbia, Thomas C. Lawless, Jr., of Lexington; grandchildren, Tracey Hall, Robbie Hall, Eric Hall; and great-grandson, Charlie Hall.

Mrs. Lawless was predeceased by a brother, Martin Ronell Moore.

Matthew Moyer

BLYTHEWOOD — Memorial services for Matthew Grady Moyer, 39, of Blythewood, will be held 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon, April 9, 2005, at Elgin Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness and 4 o’clock Saturday afternoon at Trinity United Methodist Church, Blythewood, S.C.

Shives Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Moyer died Wednesday, April 6, 2005. Born in Columbia on September 24, 1964, he was a son of Olivia Mozingo Moyer and the late Richard P. Moyer. He symbolized his dedication to Jehovah on June 9, 2001.

He leaves to mourn his death, along with his mother, his wife, Kathryn B. Moyer, five children, Jennifer (James) Moody, Dustin Moyer, Courtney Moyer, Amber Moyer and Ashley Becker, three brothers, Karl (Darla) Moyer, Grant (Sarah) Moyer, John Paul (Karen) Moyer, a sister, Kathryn (Jamey) McLendon, one grandson, Jeffry Moody and a host of family and friends.

Christopher Shivers

WEST COLUMBIA — Memorial Service for Christopher Maurice Shivers, 16, of West Columbia, will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at First Nazareth Baptist Church. The family will receive friends on this evening 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Service has been entrusted to Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, 2930 Colonial Drive, Columbia, SC.

Mr. Shivers died April 1, 2005. Born in Miami, Florida, he was the son of Milton Dicks and Charlene Shivers Gleaton. He was currently a Junior at Airport High School, and employed with the Burger King Corporation.

Chris leaves to mourn his passing, a loving mother, Charlene Shivers Gleaton and stepfather, Karnell Gleaton, Jr.; four brothers, Karnell D. Gleaton III, Brian L. Wilson, Quincy J. Myers and Luprince K. Wilson; five sisters, Alicia C. Ballard, Denise C. Gleaton, Dionte L. Martin, Safina E. Gleaton and Deidre Myers; a special aunt, Angeline Shivers Wright; grandmothers, Beulah Shivers of Miami, Florida; and Jessie O’Neal of Columbia, SC.

Eula Watkins Samuel

WINNSBORO — Services with burial for Eula Watkins Samuel will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday (noon visitation) at Nazareth Presbyterian Church, Jackson Creek Road. Gibson’s Funeral Services is in charge. Born in Fairfield County to Steve and Mahalia Roseborough Watkins, she died April 2, 2005. Surviving: sons, Willie Watkins and William Samuel; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

Ernest Thompson

COLUMBIA — Graveside services for Ernest Thompson are 3 p.m. Saturday in Hopewell AME Church Cemetery, Whiterock. Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, 2930 Colonial Drive, is in charge. Born in Chapin to Tom and Lula Deavault Thompson, he died April 2, 2005. Surviving are his siblings, John Thompson, Lillie Mae Brasley and Jessie Mae Smith.

Jasper Anderson Sr.

COLUMBIA — Homegoing Service for Jasper Robert Anderson, Sr., of Columbia, will be held High Noon Saturday at St. John Baptist Church, Beltline Boulevard. Friends are being received at 3800 Colonial Drive. Viewing is from 2:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home.

Services have been entrusted to Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, 2930 Colonial Drive.

Jasper Robert Anderson, Sr. was born July 7, 1924, in Columbia, South Carolina, and departed this life on April 1, 2005, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was the youngest child of the late William and Cecilia Ballad Anderson. His siblings predeceased him are as follows: brothers, William, Preston, Paul and Silas Anderson and one sister, Viola Anderson English. He attended public school in Columbia including the historic Monteith School. He later attended the Sheriff’s academy.

Surviving members of his family include his wife and beloved sweetheart, Beatrice Jacobs Anderson; children, Beatrice Deloris Anderson Burrell and Jasper Robert (Cassandra) Anderson, Jr., both of Columbia, South Carolina, John Lewis (deceased) (Beulah) Anderson, Marian Alicia (Eugene, Sr.) Anderson Roberts, Baltimore, Maryland, Susan Elexis Anderson (Hill), Atlanta, Georgia, Vivian Arnita (Renwick) Anderson Robinson, Dallas, Texas , Dr. Charlene Adelia (Rodney) Anderson Johnson, Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Ret. Maj. Ronald Errol Anderson, Bowie, Maryland, Ret. Maj. Donald Edward (Sandra) Anderson, Mitchellville, Maryland, and Dr. Esther Gail Anderson Holness, Washington , D.C., and a host of other loving relatives.

Newman D. “Buddy” Hubbard Sr.

COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Mr. “Buddy” Hubbard, 81, of Columbia, SC, will be held April 9, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Funeral Home. Allan Whitacre will officiate. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. The family has entrusted Greenlawn Funeral Home with the arrangements. Serving as pallbearers will be Mr. Hubbard’s grandsons, Matthew Hubbard Risse, Newman Dixon Hubbard, III (Hub), Daniel Hubbard Morbitzer, Christopher Charles Hubbard, David Hawk Morbitzer, and long time family friend, Clifford Brown (Peppy). Honorary pallbearers will be nephews, Stevie Wyatt, Hub Wyatt, Mark Wyatt, Ronnie Thrower, Charles Hawk, and Clarke Hubbard.

Mr. Hubbard died Wednesday, April 6, 2005, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Born in Renfrowe, Alabama, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Newman Milton Hubbard and Lucy Rogers Hubbard. He was married to the late Grace Louise Hawk Hubbard for almost 48 years.

Upon high school graduation in 1944, Mr. Hubbard joined the US Marine Corps. He completed boot camp training in Parris Island, SC, and combat training in Hawaii. He served in the Pacific Theater during WWII in the campaigns of Guam and Iwo Jima. Mr. Hubbard continued service in the Pacific following the Japanese surrender, and then returned to Sylacauga, AL. He then began a long career being with the American Pet Food Company. He was a member of the BAMA Chapter of the Midlands and a tremendous fan of the Crimson Tide all of his life. He was also a past member of the Columbia Rose Society. Long Creek Church of Christ was his home church.

Buddy was survived by son and daughter-in-law, Newman Dixon Hubbard, Jr. and Linda of Charleston, SC; daughter, Jane Risse of Matthews, NC; daughter and son-in-law, Harriet and Alan Zwart of Lexington, SC; grandchildren, Matthew Hubbard Risse (and wife Gayle), Robin Hubbard Long, Newman Dixon Hubbard, III, Daniel Hubbard Morbitzer, Christopher Charles Hubbard, David Hawk Morbitzer; great-grandsons, Jackson and Wyatt Long; sister, Cissy Wyatt of Sylacauga, SL; brother, Tommy Hubbard of Tucker, GA, as well as many nieces and nephews, and his long time dear friend, Louise Owens.
