Thomas Doss

COLUMBIA — Service for Thomas Eugene Doss, 84, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Foundation, c/o Cancer Center. Visitation will be Saturday 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

Mr. Doss, husband of the late Emma Doss, died Monday, April 4, 2005. Born in Welch, West Va., he was the son of the late Lawrence and Zula Freeman Doss. An Army veteran of WW II, he was a retired salesman and thirty-six year member of Cayce Moose Lodge.

Surviving are daughter, Mary Beasley of Columbia; sister, Margaret Miller of Columbia; grandsons, Tommy Fitzsimmons, Patrick Fitzsimmons, Jamie Fitzsimmons and Chris Beasley; and great-grandchildren, Darian, Sabrina and Katlyn Fitzsimmons.

Lillie Folk

NEWBERRY — Lillie Mae Folk, 82, of 1421 Wheeler Street, Newberry, died Thursday April 7, 2005, at her residence.

Miss Folk was born August 28, 1922, in Newberry, a daughter of the late Christian Milton and Lily May Caldwell Brown Folk. She was a life long member of Beth-Eden Lutheran Church, a member of the church choir, an officer of the WELCA and served on various committees of the church. She had retired from J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home.

Miss Folk is survived by a sister, Mary F. Lominick of Pomaria; eight nieces and nephews, Olin Lominick, Jr., Jane L. Ringer, Bobby F. Lominick, Chris F. Lominick, Dianne Lominick, M. Hayne Folk, J. Wayne Folk, and J. David Folk; a number of great-nieces and nephews; and a number of great-great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Hamilton Folk, James D. Brown, and R. Haskell Brown and a sister, Sarah Adelaide Folk.

Funeral services for Lillie Mae Folk will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Beth-Eden Lutheran Church by the Rev. Rodney Gunter. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at the residence, 1421 Wheeler Street, Newberry.

Memorials may be made to Beth-Eden Lutheran Church, 228 Jalapa Road, Newberry, SC 29108.

Active pallbearers will be nephews.

Whitaker Funeral Home, 1704 College Street, Newberry, is assisting the family.

Fred R. Tinsley

COLUMBIA — Services for Fred Ragan Tinsley, 82, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2005, at Westminister Presbyterian Church with interment to follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, April 8, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel. Memorials made to the Epworth Children’s Home, PO Box 50466, Columbia, SC 29250 or charity of ones choice.

Mr. Tinsley died Wednesday, April 6, 2005. Born February 18, 1923 in Spartanburg, S.C., he was the son of the late Rowley and Annie Ragan Tinsley. He was a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church. He was retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1985 and previously worked for U.S. Tobacco and Trailways. Served in the U.S. Army during WWII (Europe), and was a member of the Mason, Shriners, and York Rite.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Louise Smith Tinsley; sons, Fred Edward Tinsley and Gary Tinsley both of Columbia; daughter-in-law, Donna Tinsley; grandchildren, Samuel Gabriel Tinsley of Sioux Falls, SD, Claire Llewellyn Tinsley and Mary Louise Tinsley both of Columbia, S.C.

He was preceded in death by his son, Allan Tinsley.

Henry Strange Jr.

SUMTER — Services for Henry Nelson Strange Jr., 87, CSX Railroad retiree, WWII veteran, widower of Elizabeth White Strange, 11 a.m. Saturday (9:30 a.m. visitation): Elmore Hill McCreight F.H. Burial: Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Born in Sumter Co. to Henry Sr. & Florence Strange, he died April 5, 2005. Surviving: daughters, Lynda Boyd, Judith King; brothers, Harmon, Sidney; granddaughters.

Donald E. Phillips

ELGIN — Funeral service for Mr. Donald Edwards Phillips, 73, of Elgin, will be held 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, April 10, 2005, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Blythewood, with The Reverend Cathy Jamieson-Ogg officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Gardens of Columbia. The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7:30 o’clock Saturday evening, April 9, 2005, at Shives Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, 155 Blythewood Road, Blythewood, SC 29016.

Mr. Phillips died Wednesday, April 6, 2005. Born in Chester, S.C., he was the son of the late Hope B. and Louise Bell Phillips. He was a member of Woodhaven Baptist Church in Rock Hill, SC. Mr. Phillips was retired from Spartan Food Systems and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Phillips was a devoted husband to Bobbie Jean for 39 years, a loving father to his sons, Robert H. Rowe and his wife Donna of Blythewood and Bobby E. Rowe of Anderson; grandchildren, Rob, Bobby, Chris, Danyale, and Lydia; great granddaughter, Kylie; brothers, Carol Phillips of Rock Hill and Bobby Gene Phillips of Cleveland, OH. Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by a son, Donald E. Phillips, Jr.

Joseph F. Heyward

NORTH — Joseph Franklin Heyward, 49, of 517 Slab Landing Road, died Wednesday evening, April 6, 2005. Dukes-Harley Funeral Home is in charge.

Mr. Heyward was born in Florence, a son of Mary Veronica Carr and the late Paul Harmon Heyward. He was a self employed mechanic. Mr. Heyward was a member of the Episcopal church.

Survivors: mother, of Hanahan; brother, Robert Bradley Heyward, Sumter; two sisters, Virginia Gating, Waxahachie, TX, Paulette Larches, Hanahan, S.C. He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Russell Heyward and Larry Heyward.

Mattie Roberta Davis

NEWBERRY — Services for Mattie Roberta Davis, 86, 3 p.m. Sunday (viewing 2 p.m.) at Old Beaverdam Baptist Church, Wilson Funeral Home in charge. Born in Newberry Co. to James and Emma Glasgow, she died April 5, 2005. Surviving: stepchildren, Nathaniel, Brunelle Davis; grandchild, Pamela Davis; siblings, Henry, Johnnie Glasgow, Lucrease Elmore, Dorothy Reid, Cleathie Rikard, Marie Swittenburg.

Helen Folk

NEWBERRY — Services for Helen Brown Folk will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at McSwain-Evans Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Tony Locke. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 6-7:30 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Newberry A.R.P. Church Memorial Fund, 1701 Main Street, Newberry, SC 29108, J.F. Hawkins Health Care 1330 Kinard Street, Newberry, SC 29108 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Active pallbearers: Dr. John Williamson Brown, Sr., William Clyde Brown, Richard Lominick, Ralph Boazman, E. B. “Ned” Carlisle, Bill Franklin and Jesse Folk.

Mrs. Folk, 96, widow of Tommy Milton Folk, Sr., died April 8, 2005, at J.F. Hawkins Health Care. Born in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Sims Williamson and Sallie Ruff Brown. Mrs. Folk was a 1931 graduate of Winthrop College and retired with 30 years of service as an educator in Newberry County. She was a member of Newberry A.R.P. Church where she was a member of Circle I. She was a member of the Calvin Crosier U.D.C. and the retired Teacher’s Association.

Surviving are sons, Tommy Milton (Agnes) Folk, Jr. of Florence and Harold Brown (Ann) Folk of Newberry; a daughter-in-law, Linda Folk of Newberry; six grandchildren, Carol Folk Foster of Newberry, Tommy Milton Folk III, Sallie Brown Folk and Robert Walton Folk all of Florence, Brantley Elizabeth Satterwhite and Lauren Ann Folk both of Newberry; two great-grandchildren, Joseph Harold Foster and Amelia Ruth Foster. She was predeceased by a son, Sims Williamson Folk and brother, Sims Williamson “Brother” Brown and Jesse Carlisle Brown, Sr.

Paul Williams

COLUMBIA — Homegoing services for Paul Jackson “Heavy Head” Williams, 2 p.m. at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, 2930 Colonial Drive, with burial in Serenity Memorial Gardens. Born in Columbia to Jackson and Phyllis M. Williams, he died April 7, 2005. Surviving: daughter, Tanisha Walker; siblings, Johnnie McRant, Robert, Rev. Isaiah, Joseph, Frances and Phillistine Williams, Sydell Edmonds.

Melinda Patterson-Collins

HAMPTON — Services for Melinda Patterson-Collins, 34, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Hampton Elementary School with burial in Ellis Cemetery, Varnville. A wake will be 6-8 tonight at Riley’s Funeral Home. She died April 5, 2005. Surviving are daughters, Miranda, Michele, Rachel Collins; siblings, Arthur Jr., Melissa, Carla, Dana Patterson, Carrie Wright; one grandchild.

Leonard Joye

WALTERBORO — Leonard Thomas Joye, of 710 Hampton St., Walterboro, a retired Charleston Naval Shipyard employee and husband of Alice Fishburne Joye, died Thursday at his residence. He was 66.

Mr. Joye was born January 1, 1939, in North Charleston, a son of the late Irvin Thomas Joye and Edna Bowick Joye. He attended Chicora High School and served in the U.S. Marines. He was a former shipfitter at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, Materials Manager at Roper Hospital, Appraiser for the Colleton County Assessors Office, owner of Joye Appraisal Company of Walterboro, and was Bailiff for Colleton County Courthouse. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, a mason, an avid historian and Civil War enthusiast.

Surviving besides his wife are: one son, John Irvin Joye of Sarasota, Florida; three daughters, Susan Joye Muckenfuss of Beaufort, Tiffany Joye Smith of Chapin, and Deni Godley Grant of Jacksonboro; a sister, Edna Joye Lear of Hanahan and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the graveside in Live Oak Cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul St., Walterboro, S.C.

Memorials may be made to Civil War Preservation Trust, 1331 H Street, Suite 1001, Washington , DC 20005, or to the charity of one’s choice.
