Jennie Dean Burton

COLUMBIA — Service for Jennie Dean Burton, 91, will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel with entombment to follow in the mausoleum. The family will receive friends after the service at the residence. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Palmetto Chapter. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

Mrs. Burton died Thursday, April 7, 2005. Born in Williston, N.C., she was a daughter of the late LeRoy and Rosa Strawbridge. Mrs. Burton was a graduate of Olympia High School. For more than sixty years she owned and operated Dean’s Beauty Shop. An avid dancer, she was associated with the Fred Astaire Dance Studio and received numerous awards for her dance accomplishments. Mrs. Burton’s yard was a showplace; she was a successful gardener whose lawn and flowers were admired by all. She loved music and cooking, and her family and friends; she was generous and giving to everyone.

Surviving are her son, William (Billy) G. Dean of Columbia; daughter, Nancy Dean Posey of Columbia; brother, Carl Wayne Strawbridge; grandchildren, Jennie Dean Martin, Patty Dean Barnhill, Billie Jo Dean Simmons, and William Michael Dean, all of Lexington, Mary Ellen Bowden Lackey of Chapin, and John David Bowden of Augusta; and fourteen great-grandchildren. Mrs. Burton was predeceased by her sister, Johnnie Mae Brogden, and her brother, LeRoy (Buddy) Strawbridge.

Matthew Moyer

BLYTHEWOOD — Memorial service for Matthew Grady Moyer, 40, of Blythewood, will be held 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon, April 9, 2005, at Elgin Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness. A service was also held for Mr. Moyer at 11 o’clock yesterday (Friday) at Trinity United Methodist Church, Blythewood, S.C. Friends may visit with the family at the residence of his mother, Olivia Moyer on Rushing Road, Blythewood.

Shives Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Moyer died Wednesday, April 6, 2005. Born in Columbia on September 24, 1964, he was a son of Olivia Mozingo Moyer and the late Richard P. Moyer. He symbolized his dedication to Jehovah on June 9, 2001.

He leaves to mourn his death, along with his mother, his wife, Kathryn B. Moyer, five children, Jennifer (James) Moody, Dustin Moyer, Courtney Moyer, Amber Moyer and Ashley Becker, three brothers, Karl (Darla) Moyer, Grant (Sarah) Moyer, John Paul (Karen) Moyer, a sister, Kathryn (Jamey) McLendon, one grandson, Jeffry Moody and a host of family and friends.

David Walters

LEXINGTON — Service for David Bishop Walters, 55, will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Boyce Chapel, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the home of his sister, Sharon Bryant, 4748 Lockewood Lane, Columbia. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Columbia. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mr. Walters died Thursday, April 7, 2005. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late James Durham and Shellie Bishop Walters. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, Class of 1971, and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He had a lifelong career in mortgage banking, contracting and finance. He was and avid sportsman and loved gardening. He was a past member of the Downtown Optimist Club, and a member of First Baptist Church, Columbia.

Surviving are his brother, James D. Walters, Jr. and his wife, Dianna of Irmo; sister, Sharon W. Bryant and her husband, Stephen of Columbia; nephew, Peyton Durham Bryant of Columbia; niece, Paige Bishop Bryant of Columbia; and fiance, Dale Cox Nelson of Irmo.

Ariail Smith

TRENTON — A memorial service for Mr. Ariail Smith, age 89, will be held in Trenton United Methodist Church at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 10, 2005, following entombment in East View Cemetery Mausoleum, Edgefield, SC, at 3 p.m. Rev. Paul Rogers will officiate. The family will receive friends at the residence, 309 East Wise St., Trenton. Telephone: 275-2971. Memorials may be made to McKendree United Methodist Church Building Fund, 203 Faulkner Mt. Road, Edgefield, SC 29824 or to Trenton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 178, Trenton, SC 29837. Bland Funeral Home of Johnston is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smith, a native of Edgefield County, died Friday, April 8, 2005. He was a son of the late James Robert, Sr. and Lula Bush Smith. He had retired as an employee of the South Carolina Commission of Forestry, having been a Fire Tower Watchman. Mr. Smith was a member of Trenton United Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative Board and had served as Sunday School Superintendent for a number of years.

Survivors include his wife, Rachel T. Smith; two sons, Walton and James Smith; three sisters, Mary Black, Eugenia Reynolds and Martha Johnson; two brothers, Henry Lee Smith and P.B. Smith; three grandchildren, Cody Smith, Amber Smith and Allisa Smith.

Lecha Palassis Pleicones

COLUMBIA — Service for Lecha Palassis Pleicones, 84, will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Trisagion Prayers will be recited at Sunday at 4 p.m. with visitation following until 7 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Building Fund.

Mrs. Pleicones, wife of the late Michael James Pleicones, died Thursday, April 7, 2005. Born in Charleston, she was a daughter of the late Ross and Venetia Chakiris Palassis. She had retired from Dixie Central Distributing, and was a devoted member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.

Surviving are her son, The Honorable Costa Pleicones and his wife, Donna of Columbia; daughter, Frances Katsulis and her husband, Bill of West Peabody, Mass.; sisters, Tina P. Leventis of Columbia, and Mary Palassis of Charleston; four grandchildren, Michael J. Katsulis and his wife, Carol, Jennifer Humphrey and her husband, Lindsey, Sara Norrell, and Laura Pleicones; and four great-grandchldren, Max Norrell, Lauren Humphrey, Daniel and Christopher Humphrey. She was predeceased by a brother, Costa Palassis and a sister, Nula Palassis.

Margaret Wallace Clayton

LAURENS — Margaret Wallace Clayton, age 78, of 125 W. Copeland St., Martha Franks Village, died Friday, April 8th, in Laurens County Hospital.

She was born in Newberry County, the daughter of the late Charles Cleland and Frances Richbourg Wallace.

Mrs. Clayton was a graduate of Newberry College and a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was the church organist for over ten years. Before coming to Laurens, she taught elementary school and music in Pickens. Mrs. Clayton was an accomplished water colorist and also worked in pastels.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Morris Clayton, Sr. of the home; a son and daughter-in law, Dr. Robert (Bobby) Morris and Mary Alice Clayton, Jr. of Conway; a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth (Betsy) Clayton and Steven Smith of Atlanta, GA; also four grandchildren, John, Lea, Adam and Rachel.

Graveside services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Sharon United Methodist Church Cemetery in Central, S.C. A memorial service will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. in the Martha Franks Chapel in Laurens.

The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service.

Frances Spivey Pearce

FLORENCE — Graveside services for Frances Spivey Pearce will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 10, 2005, in Hopewell Presbyterian Church Cemetery, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. Miss Pearce, 60, died Thursday, April 7, in a local hospital after a brief illness.

Miss Pearce attended Florence schools and graduated from Central Wesleyan College. She worked in Columbia for the Commission for the Blind, where she was an assistant in the plant horticultural department. She returned to Florence and worked for the Pee Dee Experimental Station and then for the Triple R Farms Nursery.

Becoming a Master Gardener was a highlight in her love for plants. Miss Pearce’s love for her community was shown in many ways, including her long participation in the Special Olympics and taking part in the Pee Dee Heart Walks as many years as possible. She enjoyed music. She played the piano and guitar and sang in her church choir. Ceramics was a hobby she enjoyed throughout life.

Miss Pearce was active in Sunday school and youth work at the First Presbyterian Church and was later active in the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Her faith was exuberant.

Miss Pearce was the daughter of the late Laura Spivey and Frank McLeod Pearce. Her survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Jane and Evans P. Holland. Also surviving are two nieces, Laura and husband Tolman Geffs of Greenwich, CT, and Cille and husband Chris Scott of Columbia, SC, and a nephew, Dr. Evans P. Holland, Jr. and wife Helen of Florence.

The family will receive friends at 814 Greenway Drive. Memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2301 W. Second Loop Road, Florence, SC 29501.

Lorene Mefford

COLUMBIA — Service for Lorene Mefford, 89, will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Joe Cal Watson, with burial to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Nephews will serve as pallbearers, and members of the Wesley Fidelity Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be Saturday 5-7 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Epworth Children’s Home or Main Street United Methodist Church.

Miss Mefford died Wednesday, April 6, 2005. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Ollie and Blanche Champion Mefford. She had retired as a bookkeeper with Epworth Children’s Home. Miss Mefford was a long-time Avon sales representative, and a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and the Wesley Fidelity Sunday School Class.

Surviving are her sisters Ethel Champion Mefford, Ruth Halloran, and Mary E. Newby and her husband Bruce, all of Columbia; brother and sister-in-law Ollie and Nelda Mefford of Columbia; niece Betty Hollingsworth and her husband Paul; brother-in-law John T. Watkins of Columbia; and numerous nieces and nephews. Miss Mefford was predeceased by her sister Annie Mae Watkins.

Martha Lee “Peg” Ryan

CHAPIN — Mrs. Martha Lee “Peg” Ryan, 78, died Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at her home in Chapin, SC. She was a daughter of the late Robert Beatty and Lillian Shinn and the wife of Thomas H. Ryan, Sr.

Surviving are her husband of sixty years, Thomas H. Ryan, Sr., sons, Robert T. Ryan, Thomas H. Ryan, Jr., Patrick M. Ryan, and Carl W. Ryan; grandchildren, Dana Foster, Danielle Kimble, Greg Ryan, and Jason Ryan; and great-grandchildren, Taylor Halstead, Madison Foster, and Morgan Foster.

Born September 14, 1926 in Alliance, Ohio, she attended Salem High School, Salem, OH. She had many careers but none as important as raising her four sons. In her later years, she and her husband were very active in the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.

There will be a gathering of family and friends for a traditional Irish wake at 1 PM Sunday, May 8, 2005, Mother’s Day, at the Ryan residence.

The family would like to thank Carolinas Community Hospice and the Lexington Medical Center staff for their loving care.

Memorials may be made to the Carolinas Community Hospice, 3096 Sunset Blvd., West Columbia, SC 29169.

Virginia Belk

WINNSBORO — Funeral services for Virginia Anderson Belk, 77, will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, April 11, 2005, in the First Church of the Nazarene, Winnsboro, conducted by Rev. Donny McKenzie. Burial will follow in the Fairfield Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Sunday at Pope Funeral Home.

Born December 27, 1927 in Camden, S.C., she was the daughter of the late L.B. (Burrell) Anderson, Sr. and the late Annie Mae Branham Anderson Enloe. Mrs. Belk died Friday, April 8, 2005 in the Fairfield Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Belk was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, Winnsboro.

Surviving are her husband, Herbert Belk of the home; daughters, Mary Ann Moyer and Dianne Johnston, both of Winnsboro; a son, Gene Belk of Winnsboro; a brother, Arthur Anderson of Winnsboro and a sister, Patricia A. Wilson of Lake Wateree; a number of nieces and nephews; 7 Grandchildren and 7 Great-Grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Rusty Belk and brothers, L.B. Anderson, Jr. and Eugene Anderson. Memorials may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene, 9th Street, Winnsboro, S.C. 29180.

Pope Funeral Home is assisting the Belk family.
