G. Dean Stansell

LEXINGTON — Services for Gary Dean Stansell, 58, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 5, 2004 at Robinson Funeral Home, Downtown Easley Chapel with burial to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Easley. Visitation will be held from 6-8 Thursday, November 4, 2004 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel and from 1-2 p.m. on Friday, November 5, 2004 at Robinson Funeral Home, Downtown Easley Chapel, prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 2491 Emmanuel Church Rd., West Columbia, SC. 29170.

Mr. Stansell, husband of Linda Stokes Stansell for 28 years, died Tuesday, November 2, 2004. He was the son of Willie M. Stansell, Sr., and the late Marie Vinson Stansell. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, an organ donor, a devoted employee of Michelin Tire for thirty years and a die hard Gamecock Fan.

He is survived by his wife Linda Stokes Stansell of Lexington; son, Gary Brian Stansell of Lexington; daughter Deanna Stansell Chiovera of Charlotte, NC; two grandchildren, Xavier and Giuseppe Chiovera of Charlotte, NC; brothers, Willie M. Stansell, Jr., of Easley and Charles E. Stansell of Seattle, WA.

Mr. Stansell is preceded in death by his brother, Jerrell Stansell.

Michael Veltmann

CHAPIN — Memorial services for Michael David Veltmann, 26, will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel.

Michael died Tuesday, November 2, 2004. Born in Westminster, Colorado, he was a son of Christopher Peter and Carroll Rowe Veltmann. Michael was a pilot instructor with M and M Aviation at the Fairfield County Airport and a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA).

Surviving are his parents of Chapin; brother, Mathew James Veltmann of Chapin; grandparents, Frances and Marvin Stearn of Broomfield, Colo., Norma Armstrong of Arvada, Colo., and Carl Veltmann of Indian Head Park, Ill.; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandfather, James B. Rowe (a pilot).

Robert Graham

SCRANTON — Services for Robert Earl “Bummy” Graham, 55, are 2:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church; burial in Beaverdam Cemetery. Green’s Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge. Born to Sallie Dobson, he died Nov. 3, 2004. Surviving: wife, Fannie; sons, Robert, Garrick, Ronnie Graham, Justice Supreme; stepson, Leon Graham; siblings, Jerlene Cameron, Blondell Hickson, John Graham.

Lawrence Graves

COLUMBIA — Graveside service for Lawrence Benjamin Graves, 85, will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church following the graveside service. Memorials may be made to Newberry College, 2100 College Street, Newberry, SC 29108, attention: Larry Graves Athletic Scholarship Fund or to a charity of one’s choice. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mr. Graves died Friday, November 05, 2004. Born in Spartanburg, he was a son of the late Edwin Buddin Graves and Dewey Fleming Graves. Larry, after graduation from Spartan High in 1938, entered Newberry College before joining the Army Air Corps for World War II. He returned to Newberry to obtain his diploma in 1946.

At Newberry, he played four rugged years of football for the Redskins-three as a tackle and one as an end. He captained the squads in ‘45 and ‘46.

Larry finished work towards his masters degree at the University of South Carolina in 1949 and returned to his alma mater as a professor of economics until 1954 when he succeeded Ernest Stokes as executive secretary of the S.C. High School League. The Alumni Association named Graves Outstanding Alumnus of the year, 1983, and the Lettermen’s Club named him to the Athletic Hall of Fame, 1991. Newberry College conferred the Doctor Humane Letters degree on him during commencement on May 5, 1996.

Mr. Graves retired from the S.C. Army Reserves where he was a member of the 360 Civil Affairs Brigade.

Mr. Graves was a member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church

Surviving are his wife, Mary Felder Graves; sons, Dr. William M. Graves and his wife, Phyllis, of Athens, Ga. and Dr. Thomas D. Wooten, Jr. of Charleston; grandchildren, Nathaniel Benjamin Graves and Megan Graves of Athens, Ga. and Elizabeth Wooten Yonce, Thomas Durrette Wooten III and Caroline Felder Wooten, all of Charleston; and sisters, Beatrice Jackson of Spartanburg and Mary Lawing of Hickory, N.C. He was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy Jones Graves; son, Robert Edwin Graves; and other siblings.

James Layden

COLUMBIA — Funeral Mass for Major James Francis Layden, U.S. Army (Ret.), 72, will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church. Final Commendation and Farewell Prayers will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 100 Polo Road, Columbia, S.C. 29223. The Rosary will be recited Sunday at 6 p.m. with visitation until 8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mr. Layden died Thursday, November 4, 2004, after a forty year battle with cancer. Born in Salem, Ohio, he was a son of the late James Roger and Regina Tritch Layden. He graduated from Salem High School and Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning Ga. He was in the Medical Service Corps in hospital administration, serving in Germany and Japan as well as Ft. Sam Houston and Ft. Jackson. Retired from the U.S. Army, he served during the Korean Conflict. He received a Bachelor of Administration degree from the University of Maryland and he served as civilian liason officer for Patient Affairs at Moncrief Army Hospital. In 1995 he retired from the Division of Certificate of Need at DHEC.

Mr. Layden was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife of forty-nine years, Doris A. Gall Layden; daughters, Kathleen Ann Morris and Linda Layden Hendrix, both of Columbia, Christine Marie Fowler and her husband, Mike, of Elgin; sons, James Roger Layden, Patrick John Layden and his wife, Greg, and son, Michael Paul Layden, all of Columbia; grandchildren, Erin and Megan Hendrix, Jessica Layden, Kristen and Kaitlyn Fowler, Austin and Lauren Layden and Jordan Morris; sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Thomas Danklef of Salem, Ohio; sister-in-law, Wilma Layden of Cleveland, Ohio; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, Kenneth E. Layden.

Evelyn Lindell

AIKEN — Evelyn M. Lindell, 95, of Geer Rd., Griswold, Conn., died Wednesday at the W.W. Backus Hospital in Norwich. She was formerly of Aiken, S.C.

She was born Nov. 26, 1908 in Rockville Center, N.Y. daughter of the late Charles and Isabella (Aldon) Renshaw.

On Sept. 5, 1931 she was married to H. Arthur Lindell in Jewett City. He predeceased her.

Mrs. Lindell was a member of the First Congregational Church of Griswold. She was a published writer, artist and an avid reader. Mrs. Lindell started the library at the Norwichtown Conv. Home.

She is survived by two sons George Lindell of Fallon, Nev., Richard Lindell of Williston, S.C., three daughters, Doris Potete of Pt. Orange, Fla., Ruth Nowakowski of Griswold, Gail Hudson of Graniteville, S.C., one brother, Charles Renshaw of Norwich, 14 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, 2 great great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 AM at the Gagne-Piechowski Funeral Home 490 Voluntown Rd. Rt. 138 Jewett City. Interment will follow in Pachaug Cemetery, Griswold. Calling hours are Sunday 7 to 9 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First Congregation Church of Griswold 878 Voluntown Rd., Griswold, CT 06351.

Nita Mills

VARNVILLE — Services for Nita Ellen Mills, 65, 11 a.m. Monday (visitation 6-8 p.m. Sunday) at Brice W. Herndon & Sons Funeral Home, Walterboro; burial in Varnville Cemetery. Born in Salem, N.J., to George & Edith Wade and Claire & Pete Buckner, she died Nov. 5, 2004. Surviving: husband, Carroll Mills; children, Frankie, Tony, Robert, Provy, Joyce, Diane, Toni, Nita, Angela; 6 siblings; 20 grands; more.

James Nivens

ROCK HILL — Services for James Virgil Nivens, 61, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with burial in Grandview Memorial Park, Hollis Lake. Visitation is 7-8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home, Northwest. Born in Rock Hill to Cecil and Vivian Moon Nivens, he died Nov. 5, 2004. Surviving: wife, Joyce Stone Nivens; son, James Nivens; brother, Cecil Nivens; 2 grandchildren.

Jim Parker Jr.

GRANITEVILLE — Jim Roy Parker, Jr. of Graniteville, SC passed away October 22, 2004 at the age of 51. Jimmy was born in Florence, SC on January 6, 1953. He is survived by his brother, Tony Parker of 7213 Forestgate Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80908 and his brother-in-law, Paul Townes, of Chattanooga, TN. He is preceded in death by his sister Mary Lynn Parker Townes and his parents, Jim Roy Parker and Margie Brigman Parker. A graduate of Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School, he attended Clemson University and served in the U.S. Air Force. Interment was at Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, SC, on October 29th.

Marion Jones

LUGOFF — Funeral services for Marion Grigsby Jones, 59, of Lugoff will be held Monday, November 8, 2004 at 10:00 AM at Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel with graveside services at 1:00 PM in Sunset Hill Cemetery in North Augusta, SC. Rev. Steve Lee will officiate. The family will receive friends Sunday, November 7, 2004 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made to Mt. Olivet Baptist church, 608 Black River Rd, Camden, SC 29020.

Born in Augusta, GA., he was the son of Marion B. Jones and the late Catherine Grigsby Jones. He was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church and a stock broker.

Surviving are his wife, Constance Wester Jones; his father, Marion B. Jones and his wife Mary C. Jones; 3 daughters, Carolyn Clippard and her husband Paul of Lugoff, Kimberly Gore and her husband Lance of Chapin, Celeste Jones of Pinellas Park, FL., 3 granddaughters and a grandson; brother, Gene Jones of N. Augusta and a sister, Susan Crabtree of Chapin.

Joan Lux

WEST COLUMBIA — A Funeral Mass will be held for Joan Zimmers Lux, 89, at 11:00 am on Monday, November 8, 2004 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. A Rosary will be held at 4:00 pm with visitation following until 6:00 pm on Sunday, November 7, 2004 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Corpus Christi Building Fund, 2350 Augusta Highway, Lexington, SC 29072.

Mrs. Lux, widow of Robert A. Lux, died Thursday, November 4, 2004. Born in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Joseph B. Zimmers and Willamuna Miller Zimmers Curry. She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.

She is survived by her daughters, Katherine Lux of Fayetteville, AR. Susan Stanton of Lynchburg, VA; Liz Patton of Wilmington, NC and Joan Miller of Irmo; sons, John Lux of North Top Sail Beach, NC and Barry Lux of Lexington; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and nieces and nephews.

Pearl Bagley

WINNSBORO — Services for Pearl Bagley will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at White Oak Baptist Church #1 with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the church. Glover’s Memorial Chapel is in charge. Born in Fairfield County, she died October 29, 2004. Surviving are a host of relatives and friends.

Pearlie Braswell

DILLON — Services for Pearlie Mae Braswell will be held 3:00 P.M. Monday in Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with entombment in Evergreen Cemetery Mausoleum. Visitation will be held 7-9 P.M. Sunday in the funeral home.

Mrs. Braswell, 57, died Friday, November 5, 2004 at her residence.

Born in Dillon County, July 4, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Grover Altman and Blanche Stanton Altman. She was retired from Causey’s Floor Shop.

Survivors include her daughter, Becky Braswell Cederleaf of York; sons, Buster Causey, Jr. and Donald Lynn Braswell both of Bennettsville; 8 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren.
