Shelley Ramsey

MONTICELLO — A graveside service for Shelley Lynn Ramsey, 21, will be held at 4 p.m., Monday, April 11, 2005, in the Salem Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Blair, S.C., conducted by The Reverend Richard Hodges. Visitation will be Sunday, 6-8 p.m. at Pope Funeral Home, Winnsboro.

Born in Columbia, S.C. October 3, 1983, Shelley was the daughter of Joe M. and Judy Navy Ramsey. Miss Ramsey died Thursday, April 7, 2005. She had been a folder operator at a printing company in Columbia and was a member of the Salem Presbyterian Church. Shelley was a graduate of Richard Winn Academy.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Robert Edward Harrison Ramsey and sisters, Elizabeth Hope Ramsey and Breanna Marie Ramsey.

Pope Funeral Home is assisting the Ramsey family.

Elwyn Pitts

LAURENS — A graveside service for Elwyn Eugene “Jack” Pitts, 82, U.S. Navy WWII veteran, is 3 p.m. today in Friendship Presbyterian Church Cemetery with visitation to follow. Kennedy Mortuary is in charge. Born in Laurens Co. to James and Bernice Coats Pitts, he died April 8, 2005. Surviving are wife, Martha Shirley Pitts; daughters, Julia Smith, Abbie Holliday, Shawnee Boyle; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Joseph Sherrard Rice

COLUMBIA — A service of thanksgiving for the life and ministry of Dr. Joseph Sherrard Rice will be held on Monday, April 11, at 11:00 A.M. at Eastminster Presbyterian Church. Immediately after the service, burial will be in the graveyard at First Presbyterian Church on Marion Street.

Dr. Rice died on April 9 at the Presbyterian Home where he had resided for many years. He was a native of Richmond, Virginia. His father was the Reverend Theron Hall Rice, Professor of Bible and Homeletics at Union Theological Seminary. His mother was Elizabeth Mathews Sherrard of Crozet, Virginia. Dr. Rice was a graduate of Davidson College and Union Theological Seminary. He earned a masters degree from Princeton University and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity by Austin College.

Dr. Rice served as a Navy Chaplain in the Pacific during the Second World War. He held four pastorates: the Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church in Huntington, West Virginia, the First Presbyterian Church in Tyler, Texas , the First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina and the First Presbyterian Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Dr. Rice also served for five years as the Director of Evangelism for the Board of National Ministries in Atlanta ,Georgia.

In retirement, Dr. Rice served as the Director of the Massanetta Springs Conference Center in Harrisonburg, Virginia and as interim pastor at Myers Park Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina; Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Shandon Presbyterian Church and Trinity Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina.

Dr. Rice is survived by his wife Molly Wagener Rice; four children: Dr. Joseph S. Rice Jr. of Columbia, Hunter Wagener Rice of Atlanta, Tina Rice Prince of Richmond and Molly Rice Pruett of Atlanta; two sisters, Betsy Rice of Richmond, and Margie Rice Smith of Alexandria, Va.; eight grandchildren: Joseph Sherrard Rice, III, Hunter McPherson Rice, Hunter Wagener Rice, Jr., Patrick McAndrews Rice, Katherine Elizabeth Prince, John Joseph Prince, Nancy Hart Pruett and Charles Dickerson Pruett; and two great-grandchildren: Owen Henry Rice and Samantha Sloan Rice.

Visitation will be at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Joseph S. Rice at 4848 Kilbourne Rd in Columbia on Sunday afternoon from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina, 700 Da Vega Drive, Lexington, SC 29073.

Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Addison Smith Sr.

BATESBURG-LEESVILLE — Services with burial for Addison June Smith Sr., 70, will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Olive Branch Baptist Church. R.O. Levy Home For Funerals is in charge. Born to Dob and Annie Goodwin Smith, he died April 7, 2005. Surviving are wife, Mary Smith; children, Mary Lou, Shirley, Amber, Addison Jr., Joseph, Alphonso, Darin; siblings, Queen Foul, Nettie Brook; grandchildren.

Mamie Tedder

SUMTER — Services for Mamie Jeffords “Butch” Tedder, 76, are 4 p.m. Tuesday (visitation 6-8 p.m. Monday) at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home. Born in Florence Co. to Rene Sr. and Mae Jeffords, she died April 8, 2005. Surviving are father; children, Donna Mack, James, Franklin Henderson, Linda Williamson, Theresa Watson, Darlene Surrency; two brothers; 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.

Mattie Shuler

ORANGEBURG — Services with burial for Mattie J. Shuler, 78, widow of Sammie Shuler Sr., will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Greater Unity A.M.E. Church, Holly Hill, where she was a member. Wake: 7-8 tonight at Eutawville Community Funeral Home, Eutawville. Born to Gourdine and Hattie Mitchum Jacques, she died April 5, 2005. She attended public schools in Holly Hill. Surviving are 12 children.

Charles Vant

COLUMBIA — Services for Charles Heyward Vant, the first black certified electrician in S.C., are 2 p.m. (viewing 1 p.m.) Monday at Chappelle Memorial A.M.E. Church with burial in Robinson Memorial Gardens, Killian. Visitation is 2-8 tonight at Pearson’s Funeral Home. Born to Willie and Ellen Waring Vant, he died April 7, 2005. Surviving are eight children; one sister; one brother; grandchildren; others.

Michael Sullivan

CHERAW — Michael J. Sullivan, 70, died Thursday, April 7, 2005. Born in Worcester MA, he was the son of the late Daniel and Irene Cutting Sullivan. He was married to the late Georgette M. Boudreau Sullivan. He was an US Army Veteran (Korean Conflict). Mr. Sullivan was a member of St. Peter’s Parish Council, Knight of Columbus, (4th Degree Knight, Past District Deputy, Grand Knight), Eucharistic Minister, and Lector. Mr. Sullivan was a retired Industrial Electrician (Herald Machine in Worcester and Ina Bearing, Cheraw). He was a past member of the Lions, Member of American Bowling Congress, also loved woodworking, bowling and painting.

Survivors are: Rosemarie (David) LeBeau (daughter) of Cheraw, SC, Georgette Margaret (David) Walsh (daughter) of Cheraw, SC, Daniel Sullivan (brother) of Malden, MA, Dorothy Sullivan (sister) of Worcester, MA, Beverly Sullivan (sister) of Worcester, MA, (5) grandchildren and (3) great grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be held 11:00 AM Monday, April 11, 2005 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will be in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Memorials to: Knights of Columbus.

Clinton Tisdale

KINGSTREE — Samuel Clinton Tisdale, 67, died Friday, April 8, 2005 in a Lake City hospital.

Mr. Tisdale was born May 25, 1937 in Williamsburg Co., the son of Mrs. Opal Scott Tisdale and the late S.Y. Tisdale. He was a graduate of Kingstree schools and Atlanta Technical College. He was retired from Koppers Industries, Inc. and was a self-employed timber marker. Mr. Tisdale was a member and former Deacon of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, a Mason, a member of the Kingstree Zoning Board, the Williamsburg Co. Transportation Commission and a former member of the S.C. National Guard. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marcie T. Stone.

Surviving, in addition to his Mother of Kingstree, His wife: Judy Stephenson Tisdale, daughter: Lisa C. Tisdale of New York City, sister: Sylvia T. (A.C.) Duke of Kingstree, 2 grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 A.M. Monday in Kingstree Memorial Gardens, conducted by Rev. Dennis Nolen. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Sunday at Williamsburg Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Williamsburg Presbyterian Church.

Ruth Chiles

CAYCE — Services for Ruth Knopf Chiles, 90, of Cayce, SC, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 14, 2005, at State Street Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Dr. Pete Cassidy, Rev. Earl Vaughn, and Rev. Bill Doverspike. Burial will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Trooper Chiles, Isaac Chiles, Weldon Fallaw, Hale Chiles, Rudy Matthews, and Rev. Rodolph Dixon. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, SC. Memorials may be made to State Street Baptist Church, 1420 State St., Cayce, SC 29033.

Mrs. Chiles died Monday, April 11, 2005. Born in Fairfax, SC, she was the daughter of the late Isaac and Mozelle Gertrude Lancaster Knopf. Having lost her mother during her childhood, she was raised by her stepmother, Mrs. Maude Barber Knopf. A lifetime area resident, she was a graduate of Columbia College. In early years, Mrs. Chiles enjoyed entertaining churches and civic groups with recitations and readings. She was a librarian at Cayce/West Columbia Library and later retired as librarian at Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School. Mrs. Chiles was a member of State Street Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and participated in mission trips domestically and to Peru. As an artist, she was very generous with her oil paintings.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Walter Hale Chiles, Jr. and wife Trisha of Moncks Corner, SC, Paul Chiles and wife Emily of Ft. Mill, SC; grandchildren, Walter Hale Chiles, III and wife Katie, Mary Belle Chiles, Rebecca Ruth Chiles, and Isaac Chiles; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Jane Chiles and Walter Hale “Trooper” Chiles, IV. Mrs. Chiles was preceded in death by sisters, Hazel Groseclose and Lorna Stone; and brother, Ben Knopf.

William Price Sr.

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for William R. “Bill” Price, Sr., 82, of West Columbia, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Springdale Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Tommy McGill. Burial and military rites will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to Springdale Baptist Church Building Fund, 357 Wattling Rd., West Columbia, SC 29170 or to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 166 Stonebridge Dr., Suite 100, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mr. Price died Tuesday, April 12, 2005. Born in West Columbia, SC, he was the son of the late John M. and Minnie Thompson Price. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served from 1942 until 1945. He attained the rank of Platoon Sergeant and participated in the Bougainville, Guam, and Iwo Jima Campaigns. Mr. Price was a charter member of Springdale Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School Superintendent for many years. He was formerly employed with R.L. Bryan, State Printing Company, and had retired from Wentworth Printing Co. After retirement, he continued to work with his wife at Price-e’s Day Care Center.

Surviving are his loving wife of 60 years, Barbara W. Price of West Columbia; daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki P. and Bruce Beatty of Lexington, Deborah P. and Carl Stocker of Columbia; son and daughter-in-law, William R., Jr. “Chip” and Tammy Price of Columbia; grandchildren, Stephanie Wilkins and Clint Wilkins, both of New York, Jennifer Wolff and her husband Sean, Jason Stocker and his wife Summer, Megan Price, and Rachel Price, all of Columbia. Mr. Price was predeceased by his sister, Doris Williams and brother, Roy Price, both of West Columbia.

The family would like to express their sincere love and gratitude for the loving and compassionate care given to Mr. Price by the Carroll Campbell Center in Lexington and Hospice Care of Tri-County.

Elliott Ross

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Elliott Ross, 36, are 1 p.m. Friday at Genesis Church of God in Christ, with burial in Brown Chapel AME Cemetery. Visitation is 6-7 tonight at Memorial Chapel #1. Greater Columbia Funeral Services is in charge. He was born in West Columbia to Helen and Lenard Ross. Surviving: goddaughters, Brittany Millhouse, Bria, Victoria Neumon; godson, Vincent Neumon Jr.; father.

Ann Bender

COLUMBIA — Ann Bennet Houseal Bender, 56, has died. A.B., as she was known by her many friends, was the daughter of the late Edward Bennet Houseal and Ann White Houseal.

A.B. was born in Columbia and attended Columbia public schools. After being graduated from Dreher High School, A.B. attended Agnes Scott College, and was graduated from the University of South Carolina College of Journalism in 1970. While at Carolina, A.B. was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority.

A.B. worked many years for a number of advertising agencies in Columbia including Barton, Blair, Cureton as a media director. Finding life after advertising, A.B. worked in retail sales at Rackes and Whit-Ash. At the time of her death A.B. was working for the Salvation Army.

A.B. is survived by her children, Edward Houseal Bender and Sumner McLain Bender and her sister, Catherine Brunson, all of Columbia.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel.

Willie Capers

COLUMBIA — Services for Willie Capers will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Greater Columbia Funeral Service Chapel. Burial: Brown Chapel AME Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. at Eternal Sumter Chapel #2. Born in Sumter to Rose Stern, he died April, 9, 2005. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Earline Hopkins Capers; sisters, Lillie Capers, Bertha Hills; stepchildren, Sadie Nicholson, Ella Battles, James, Robert Hopkins.
