Elijah Brown

RIDGEWAY — Services for Elijah “E.J.” Brown, U.S. Air Force veteran, will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, 2930 Colonial Drive, Columbia, burial in Round Top Baptist Church Cemetery, Blythewood. Born in Blythewood to Reed and Marvin Harrison Brown, he died April 3, 2005. Surviving: sister, Ireesa Brown; niece, Karen Green; five aunts; two uncles; a host of other loving relatives.

Charles Cely

GREENVILLE — Charles Hunt Cely, 90, of Greenville, died Tuesday, April 12, 2005, after a brief illness. The son of Cleon Cecil Cely and Mary Constance Carpenter Cely, he was born July 10, 1914, in the Powdersville Community of Anderson County and was a 1933 graduate of Greenville High School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. In 1948, he founded, with his four brothers, Cely Brothers Lumber Company, which became the present-day Cely Construction Company, of which he continued to serve as chairman. He was a charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church and served the church in numerous capacities throughout the years, including as chairman of the Board, superintendent of Sunday Schools, president of the Men’s Club, head usher, a member of the Finance and Pastoral Relations committees, a longtime delegate to the S.C. Annual Conference, and many others. A lifelong bird and small animal fancier, he was active with the Clemson Extension Service and served on the board of directors of the Greenville Zoo; as superintendent of the Small Animal Division of the Greenville County American Legion Fair; and as advisor to a number of 4-H Clubs and Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups. He was a charter member of the Augusta Road Kiwanis Club, in which he held several offices. In addition, he was a dedicated volunteer with the Alston Wilkes Society for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Elizabeth Stone Cely; son, Samuel Charles Cely and his wife Mari Patricia Parillo Cely of Greenville; daughter, Sarah (Sally) Cely Jenkins Harm and her husband Dr. O. Joseph Harm III of Columbia; grandchildren, Samuel Thompson Jenkins III of Columbia, Mary Caroline Cely and William Charles Cely of Greenville; sister, Marion Cely Tucker and her husband Dr. William E. Tucker of Greenville; sister-in-law, Sybil Meyers Cely of Greenville; sister-in-law, Virginia Ellison Carricker Cely of Easley; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members. He was predeceased by his brothers, James Vincent Cely, Brooks Cecil Cely, Wallace Herbert Cely, and Raymond Earl Cely.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 8553, Greenville, SC 29604 or to the American Cancer Society, 154 Milestone Way, Greenville, SC 29615.

Services will be held on Friday, April 15, 2 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, Greenville, with visitation preceding from 12:30 to 2 in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will be in the Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery in Powdersville.

Alex Dowey

LUGOFF — Funeral services for Alex Dowey, 86, will be held on Friday, April 15, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Pine Grove Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Doug Whitfield will officiate. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 14, 2005, from 6-8 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home Lugoff Elgin Chapel. Memorials may be made to Kershaw County Hospice, 2001 W. DeKalb Street, Camden, SC 29020.

Mr. Dowey died Tuesday, April 12, 2005. Born in Lugoff, he was the son of the late Woodard and Celia Watts Dowey. He had retired after 30 years with Daniels Construction Company as a carpenter and was a volunteer fireman with Pine Grove Fire Department for 20 years, and a lifetime farmer. Mr. Dowey was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and a U.S. Army World War II veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Jackson Dowey; daughter, Delores Napper and her husband, Glenn, of Elgin; sons, Frankie Dowey, Steve Dowey and his wife, Vivian, Terry Dowey and his wife, Jackie, all of Lugoff, and Arnold Dowey of Elgin; grandchildren, Stephen Dowey, Jessica Ray, Chris Dowey, Stephanie Hayes, Ted Dowey, Layne Dowey and Ashley Burke; great-grandson, Ryan Zachary Dowey; sister, Lola Kronman of Lugoff. He was predeceased by six brothers and three sisters.

Mary Elizabeth D. Belton

RIDGEWAY — Mary Elizabeth D. Belton, 73, of 252 Longleaf Road, died April 11, 2005, in Palmetto Health Richland. She was born in Fairfield to the late Eugene and Essie Cook Davis.

Services will be held 3 p.m. Friday, April 15, 2005, at Lebanon Presbyterian Church USA with burial in the church cemetery. Dr. Ernest Jackson will officiate.

Survivors: sons, Tallie Belton, Jr. and Carl D. Belton; daughters, Sarah I. Belton, Essie B. Brown and Kimberly B. Brown; brothers, Benjamin Davis, Sr. and Robert James Davis, Sr.; sisters, Estelle D. Kelley and Alice Johnson.

Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home, Winnsboro, is in charge of arrangements.

Manuel Gallegous

LEXINGTON — Rosary services for Manuel DeJesus Gallegous will be 7 p.m. Friday, April 15, 2005, at Barr-Price Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Mr. Gallegous died Monday, April 11, 2005. He is survived by four brothers and seven sisters.

Sierra Yessler

SPRINGFIELD — Infant Sierra Kaye Yessler died Monday. Services will be held 4 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Springfield with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church and burial in Springfield Cemetery. Folk Funeral Home of Williston is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her parents, Victor E. Yessler, Jr. and Heather Kasarda Yessler; brother, Caleb; grandparents, Victor J. and Leslie Yessler, Lois and John Karsada, Neoma Burns; great-grandparents, John and Ing-Britt Dijoy, Viola K. Edwards; aunts, Megan and Ashley.

Hattie Wilson

LEXINGTON —Private memorial services for Mrs. Hattie Marie Wilson were held Wednesday evening in Columbia. Burial is today in Kelly Chapel Cemetery in Karlyle. Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, 2930 Colonial Drive, is in charge. Born in Virginia to William and Joyce B. Hayes, she died April 12, 2005. Surviving are her daughter, Betty J. Murnane; sister, Agnes Laxton; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

David B. Witherspoon Jr.

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH — David B. Witherspoon Jr., 78, died Tuesday, April 12, 2005, in Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach.

He was born December 22, 1926, in Summerton, S.C., a son of the late David Boyd and Helen Davis Witherspoon. His stepmother, Mary Green Witherspoon and a son, Boyd E. Witherspoon, predeceased him.

He was a Municipal Court Judge with the City of North Myrtle Beach. David graduated from Edmunds High School in Sumter, S.C., in 1944, attended Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., and several times attended the National Judicial College for seminars and workshops. He moved from Sumter in 1951 and served on City Council in Windy Hill, when the town first became a municipality, and acted as police commissioner as well. He then served on the first North Myrtle Beach City Council, when the four towns merged together, and continued to serve as police commissioner for a number of years. He was appointed Municipal Court judge April 25, 1980, and retired after 15 years as chief judge, but he returned to the court in 2001, on a part-time basis. He was a member of King of Glory Lutheran Church, an avid golfer, an amateur radio operator (his call sign was AB4AV), and served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Vereen Witherspoon, one son, David Boyd Witherspoon III of Georgia, three stepsons, Randy Cox and wife Lori, of Longs, Bryon Cox and wife Paula of Columbia, and Steve Cox of Longs, one brother, Jack Witherspoon and wife Linda, one sister, Elizabeth Boulineau and husband Frank of North Myrtle Beach, five grandchildren, Stephanie, Christopher, Sara, Brittany and Emily Cox.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 15, 2005, at King of Glory Lutheran Church with Pastor Pam Cook officiating. A private family entombment will be in North Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials maybe made to the King of Glory Lutheran Church, 818 Jordan Road, North Myrtle Beach, SC 29582.

Mary Alice Redd

COLUMBIA — Service for Mary Alice Redd, 90, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Greenlawn Baptist Church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Greenlawn Baptist Church, 6612 Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, S.C. 29209.

Mrs. Redd, wife of the late Willie Levins Redd, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005. Born in Sardis, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late William Oshey and Jenny Bargeon Mobley. She had retired from Richland School District One, was a member of Greenlawn Baptist Church for over 60 years, and the Woodfin-Coats Sunday School Class.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Gene Slice of Chapin; son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Carolyn Redd of Columbia; brother, Grady Mobley of Baxley, Ga.; sister, Catherine Ward of Waynesboro, Ga.; grandchildren, Debbie Derrick, Lynn (Jim) Wagner, Ernie (Kim) Redd, Jennifer Redd, and Katie (Jim) Evatt; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Wagner, Austin Royal, Shane Cleary, Rachel Evatt, and Molly Evatt; and daughter-in-law, Nan Wheeles. She was predeceased by a son, Ernest Redd, and granddaughter, Susan Redd.

Alma Juanita Jones

OREGON — Memorial services for Mrs. Alma Juanita Jones will be held 6 p.m. Friday at Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel, Columbia, S.C. Surviving are her children, James Jones, Jr., Mary Lamb (Anitra Lamb), and Daisy Jones; sister, Mary (Louis) Martin; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; cousins.

Tommy Jeffords

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Julian Thomas “Tommy” Jeffords, Jr., 70, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2005, at St Luke United Methodist Church. The Revs. Ben Gafford and Dora Gafford will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday, April 15, 2005, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Building Fund, 710 Main St., Conway, SC 29526 or St. Luke United Methodist Church Building Fund, 302 Dunlap Dr., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Jeffords died Tuesday, April 12, 2005. Born in Darlington County, S.C., he was a son of the late Julian Thomas and Edna Philen Jeffords. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and Ducks Unlimited. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was an Eagle Scout. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, fisherman, and woodworker.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Tripp and Leslie Jeffords of Conway, S.C.; daughter, Jenipher Jeffords of Hartsville, S.C.; brothers and sister-in-law, Wayne and Mary Jeffords, Kenneth Jeffords, all of Hartsville, S.C.; fiancee, Zelda Griggs of Hartsville, S.C.; grandchildren, Christian Jeffords, Davis Jeffords, Hayden Jeffords.

Lori McKenzie

HARTSVILLE — Services for Annie Laura “Lori” M. McKenzie, 52, 3 p.m. Friday at Fourth Street Baptist Church. Burial: Westview Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is 5-7 tonight at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Born in Darlington Co., to Lewis and Selma Parnell Moore Jr., she died April 12, 2005. Surviving: daughters, Jeannie Ken Newsome, Angie Wilkes, Ashley McKenzie; mother; siblings; grandchildren.

Shajuan Mack

COLUMBIA — Services for Ms. Shajuan Gwenetta Mack will held 3 p.m. Friday (viewing at 2 p.m.) at Zion Baptist Church with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel is in charge. Surviving are her daughter, Aisha Mack; mother, Luna Mack; brother, Joel Mack.

Elizabeth Psillos

DARLINGTON — Elizabeth Mitchell Psillos, 87, died Tuesday April 12, 2005, after a brief illness. Born April 12, 1918, in Union, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Mitchell and Evangeline Psillos.

Miss Psillos graduated from St. John’s High School and Winthrop University. She had varied employment with private industry and the Federal Government in Washington , D.C., New York City, and Charleston, S.C. She had retired from the Social Security Administration in Florence, S.C. Miss Psillos was a member of the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church and the Ladies Philoptochos Society of Florence.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Angelo, Nick, Chris, Paul and Ellen M. Psillos and Dorothy P. Pechilis. She is survived by a sister, Anne P. Woods of Columbia, S.C., nieces: Michele P. Burns, Celia P. Atkinson, Sarah P. Hanna, Pamela P. Hewitt, Tina P. Padgett, Theresa P. Perdue, Barbara P. Pappas and Jalene Martin, nephews: Michael, Chris, and Gregory Psillos, and Anthony Martin.

A Trisagion memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Thursday night at Belk Funeral Home with visitation following the service.

Funeral services will be held at 11 Friday, April 15, 2005, at the Chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill Cemetery officiated by Father Gregory Waynick.
