Benjamin R. “Bobby” Snipes Sr.

FLORENCE — Benjamin R. “Bobby” Snipes, Sr., 78, husband of Bobbie Lou Cannon Snipes, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, after a brief illness. Bobby was the son of the late Archie Gilchrist Snipes and Mae Thomas Snipes.

Surviving Bobby, in addition to his wife of the home, are three daughters, Margaret E. Snipes of Little River, SC, Mellie Snipes Grimsley and her husband, Charles Whit Grimsley, of Florence, SC, and Bonnie Snipes Kamaris and her husband, Alex Kamaris of Columbia, SC; and one son, Ben Snipes, Jr., of Virginia. Also surviving are a brother, Milton E. and Clara Snipes of Mt. Dora, FL, and a sister, Betty Snipes Campbell and William P. “Billy” Campbell of Florence; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; loving nieces and nephews and his “coffee buddies.”

Mr. Snipes was predeceased by two brothers, A.G. Snipes, Jr. and Joe H. Snipes; and three sisters, Gladys S. Sandsbury Prosser, Edna S. Young, and Mary S. Anderson.

Born in Florence, SC, Bobby joined the U.S. Marine Corps with his good friend, Major Summerford, After serving in Okinawa, Japan, Bobby was in the Army National Guard serving as Sgt. Ben Snipes for over 30 years. Bobby retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 33 years as a letter carrier.

Bobby was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and the Christian Family Class.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 15, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Florence National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church Van Fund or Building Fund, P.O. Box 5446, Florence, SC 29502.

Hattie Wilson

LEXINGTON — Private memorial services for Mrs. Hattie Marie Wilson were held Wednesday evening in Columbia. Burial followed in Kelly Chapel Cemetery in Carlise, South Carolina. Services were entrusted to Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, 2930 Colonial Drive, Columbia, S.C. Mrs. Wilson died April 12, 2005. Born in Danville, Virginia, she was the daughter of William and Joyce Blackburn Hayes. She retired after 38 years of service to the Shakespeare Company, where she worked as a computer database operator. She was also a member of the Army Aircorps. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Murnane. She is survived by a daughter, Betty Jane Murnane; one son-in-law, Joe Murnane, both of Columbia, South Carolina; sister, Agnes Laxton of Union, South Carolina; granddaughters, Michelle Zandi, Tonya Stewart, both of Columbia, South Carolina; seven great-grandchildren; a host of nephews and nieces.

Dr. Maurice F. Herring Jr.

GILBERT — Dr. Maurice Francis Herring, Jr., 82, died April 13, 2005, at Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, South Carolina due to complications following pneumonia. Born in Duck Hill, Mississippi, he was the son of Maurice Francis and Dorothy Herring of Raymond, Mississippi. Survivors include his wife, Ernestine Smith Herring of Gilbert, South Carolina and his children Michael Dennis Herring of Show Low, Arizona; Stephen Locke Herring of Cincinnati, Ohio; and Maureen Frances Harvey of Sykesville, Maryland. He also leaves four siblings: Jean Berry of Gonzales, Louisiana; Joyce Norman of Lake Jackson, Texas ; Dr. Jack Herring of Magee, Mississippi; and Judy Foster of Madison, Mississippi. Survivors also include five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Dr. Herring held academic degrees from Mississippi College and the University of Tennessee Medical School. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and received the Coast Guard Commendation Medal for meritorious achievement in 1974 for special service. He practiced medicine in Lexington, Mississippi, until he was called back into the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He transferred from the Navy to the U.S. Public Health Service where he served as a Medical Director. He retired after thirty years of service and then made his home in Gilbert, South Carolina for twenty-eight years. He had been very active in the Ruritan Club for many years. Dr. Herring enjoyed singing in the choir in St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church where he had served as church treasurer and as a member of the Church Council. During his retirement he became an avid golfer and gardener who was a beloved member of his adopted community. The family will receive visitors on Friday between 6 and 8 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home in Lexington. Services for Dr. Herring will be held at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Gilbert, South Carolina, on Saturday, April 16, 2005, at eleven o’clock, officiated by Pastor Marion Brazell and Pastor Russ Stillwell. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Margaret Weekley Jordan

COLUMBIA — Margaret Weekley Jordan, 97, died Wednesday April 13, 2005. She was the widow of Burwell L. Jordan Jr. She was born in Pensacola, Fla., and lived all of her adult life in Tampa, Fla. She was the daughter of Robert Lynn Weekley and Margaret Boyd Miner Weekley. She attended Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga., and graduated from The University of Florida. Mrs. Jordan taught first and third grades in the Hillsborough County School System for many years. She was a member of the Plama Ceia United Methodist Church. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dr.and Mrs. Ashby M. Jordan Sr. of Columbia, S.C.; daughters-in-law, Joy Jordan of Birmingham, Ala. and Bonnie McKay Jordan of Tampa, Fla., sisters, Mrs. Laura Joy of Rome Ga., and Mrs. Patricia Roberts, Tampa, Fla., seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sons, Burwell L. Jordan III and Thomas Robert Jordan. Plans for a graveside memorial service will be announced at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Children’s Chance, 609 Sims Ave., Columbia, SC 29205 or the charity of ones choice.

Allen Howle

SWANSEA — Allen Patrick Howle, Swansea, SC, formerly of Florence, age 43, born March 17, 1962, went to rest with his father, Allen McLauren Howle, Wednesday, April 13, after a long battle with cancer. He attended South Florence Schools. He is survived by a long time companion, Denise Britt, a daughter, Shane Marie, granddaughter, Alana Nicole, son, Allen Curtis, mother, Joyce Revell Howle, sisters, Patricia (Don) Balkcum, Joy Lynne (Michael) Smith, brother, John Franklin Howle, and by numerous aunts, uncles, neices, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 17, at the Irmo Church of God, Irmo, S.C.

Wilbur McCants

COLUMBIA — A private graveside service for Mr. Wilbur Grady McCants, 80, of Columbia, will be held in Florence National Cemetery with military honors. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association of SC, 1817 Gadsden Street, Columbia, SC 29201 or the Disabled American Veterans National Service Foundation, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250. Shives Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McCants died Wednesday, April 13, 2005. Born in Blakely County, GA, he was a son of the late John and Ora Grimsley McCants. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. Mr. McCants worked in wholesale produce business for 50 years.

Survivors include his son, Michael McCants, Sr. and his wife, Kathleen, of Gaston; daughter, Sylvia Padgett and her husband, Ralph, of Lexington; grandchildren, R. Darrell Padgett, Kenneth W. Padgett, Michael McCants, Jr. and Samuel J. Padgett; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Jewel Venezia of Indianapolis, IN, Betty Roach of Chester, Janice Davis of West Columbia, Martha Young of Houston, TX and Francis Soule; brother, Dean Young of Houston, TX. In addition to his parents, Mr. McCants was preceded in death by his stepmother, Janie McCants.

Chance Polson

HARTSVILLE — Graveside services for Chance Alton Polson, Jr., infant son of Chance A. and Karina Barratt Polson, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2005, in Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Ricky Bledsoe will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends Friday, April 15, 2005 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Chance died Tuesday, April 12, 2005. Born in Rock Hill, S.C., he is survived by his father and mother of Fort Mill, S.C.; sister, Ayanna Aahliya Polson of Fort Mill, S.C.; paternal grandfather, Charles Wayne Polson of Hartsville, S.C.; paternal grandmother, Rachel Galloway Polson of Hartsville, S.C.; maternal grandparents, David and Karen Barratt of Fort Mill, S.C.; paternal great-great-grandmother, Martha Adams of Florence, S.C.; maternal great-grandparents, Ernest and Freida Barratt of Fort Mill, S.C.

Diana Ramme

COLUMBIA — Memorial services for Diana Lynn Ashworth Ramme, 41, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service.

Ms. Ramme died Friday April 8, 2005. Born in Sanford, FL, she was the daughter of David P. Ashworth, Sr. and Annie L Morden Ashworth.

She is survived by her children, Dana Anderson of Maryland and John Anderson of Florida; her mother and father of Little Mountain; grandson, Thomas Paul Brown of Maryland; brothers Keith Ashworth of Greer, S.C., Kevin Ashworth of Florida, and David Ashworth, Jr. of Little Mountain; sister, Teresa Wolfe of Florida.

Annie Laura McKenzie

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Annie Laura Moore McKenzie, 52, will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, April 15, 2005, at Fourth Street Baptist Church. The Rev. Jack Epperly will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Thursday, April 14, 2005, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. McKenzie died Tuesday, April 12, 2005. Born in Darlington County, S.C., she was a daughter of Selma Parnell Moore and the late Lewis Arthur Moore, Jr.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Jeannie and Ken Newsome, Jr. of McBee, S.C., Angie and Chris Wilkes of Chesterfield, S.C., Ashley McKenzie of Hartsville, S.C.; mother, of Hartsville, S.C.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Elaine and Carson Byrd of Hartsville, S.C., Wanda and Heyward Blackwell of McBee, S.C.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Frankie and Gwen Moore of Hartsville, S.C., Carl and Rose Moore of Hartsville, S.C., Lewis and Angie Moore of Hartsville, S.C.; aunt, Thelma Blackwell of McBee, S.C.; grandchildren, Josh Wilkes, Kaley Wilkes, Gracie Newsome.

Christopher Price

JEFFERSON — Funeral services for Christopher K. Price, 32, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2005, at Macedonia Baptist Church. The Rev. David Walker will officiate with burial in the church Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Saturday, April 16, 2005, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Chesterfield County Hospice, 140 South Page St., Chesterfield, SC 29709 or Paws and Claws of Chesterfield, PO Box 386, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

Chris Price died Thursday, April 14, 2005. Born in Lancaster County, S.C., he was a son of Ronnie and Carla Middleton Watford. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and graduate of McBee High School.

Surviving are his father and mother; uncles and aunts, Roger and Janitt Smith of Jefferson, S.C., Dan Middleton of Anderson, S.C., Larry and Kay Watford of Hartsville, S.C.; cousins, Bryan Smith and Kim Mangum; special great-niece, Kylie Mangum; and his canine companion, Nina. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Buddy and Edith Middleton and Otis and Ada Grace Watford.

Clarence P. Snelgrove

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — Funeral services for Clarence P. “C.P.” Snelgrove, 96 of Cookeville will be held Saturday, April 16, 2005, at 11 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. David Campbell, Rev. Ernest Roberson, and Rev. Richard Neil officiating. Interment will follow in Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Snelgrove died April 5, 2005, at NHC of Cookeville following a short illness.

He was born on December 13, 1908, in Lexington County, S.C., to the late Carey A. and Bessie Keisler Snelgrove. He attended the public schools of Lexington County, graduating in 1928 from Gilbert High School as valedictorian of his class. He worked his way through the University of South Carolina, graduating cum laude in 1932 with an A.B. degree. He was awarded a scholarship to George Peabody Library, Nashville, in 1934, graduating in 1935 with a B.S. degree in Library Science. Following a brief tenure as a high school librarian in Florida, Mr. Snelgrove served from January 1936 to June 1974 as head librarian at Tennessee Polytechnic Institute, later Tennessee Technological University.

He was a volunteer all his life in various capacities at Tennessee Tech and in the community, particularly with the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, and the American Red Cross blood program. In 1997 the Tennessee Tech Alumni Association honored him with its Outstanding Service Award. He was also honored by having the Administrative Office Complex in the Tennessee Tech University Library named for him in 1999 and by being listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in Education and Who’s Who in Library Science.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Cookeville for more than 65 years, serving in various capacities including treasurer and ruling elder. He was also a member of the Cookeville Rotary Club for some 44 years, having joined October 4, 1961, serving as president in 1965-66, and he was a recipient of Rotary’s Paul Harris Award in October 1994. In addition, he was a member of the Tech Garden Club and the Tennessee Tech Emeriti Faculty, for which he served as president.

During World War II, Mr. Snelgrove served for 22 months of active duty in the U.S. Navy. For 20 of those months he served aboard the USS Merak in the North Atlantic, Caribbean, and Mediterranean Theater; the last four of those months he served as the ship’s executive officer.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Snelgrove was preceded in death by his wife of over 59 years, Louise Youmans Snelgrove, a sister, Mrs. Grace Snelgrove Kelley and a brother Wes Snelgrove.

Mr. Snelgrove’s family includes a son, Dr. James L. Snelgrove of Naperville, IL, and his wife Alice Medley Snelgrove, and twin daughters, Anne C. Snelgrove of Evanston, IL and Dr. Sarah M. Snelgrove of Branford, CT, a daughter, Mrs. Susan Snelgrove Schultz and her husband Dr. Russ A. Schultz of Beaumont, TX, and their daughter Dr. Jennifer Schultz Hernandez and her husband Omar Hernandez of Dallas, TX and four sisters and one brother, all living in central South Carolina.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 P.M. on Friday, April 15, 2005, at the funeral home and Saturday morning 10 A.M. until time of service at the church.

Honorary pallbearers will be the retired faculty members of Tennessee Tech and members of the Cookeville Noonday Rotary Club. Active pallbearers will include elders of the First Presbyterian Church and other long-time friends.

Contributions in Mr. Snelgrove’s memory may be made to the Choir Fund at the First Presbyterian Church or to the C.P. Snelgrove Memorial Fund at Tennessee Technological University.

Marilyn Shealy

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Marilyn Gunnells Shealy, 57, of West Columbia, will be held at 2pm Sunday at South Lexington Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Robert Jumper. Burial will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Saturday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to the American Stroke Association (www.strokeassociation.org).

Mrs. Shealy died Wednesday, April 13, 2005. Born in Barnwell County, SC, she was the daughter of the late Randolph Dawson Gunnells, Sr. and Ruby Catherine Higgs Gunnells. She attended Agape Baptist Church and Congaree Baptist Church. Mrs. Shealy supported Midlands Dixie Youth Baseball and Lexington Girls Softball throughout the years.

Surviving are her husband, Harold Thomas “Tommy” Shealy of West Columbia; daughter and son-in-law, Shannon Renee and Travis Blume of West Columbia; son and daughter-in-law, Andrew Lyn and Tina Shealy of Lexington; sisters, Elizabeth Ann Slater of West Columbia, Carolyn Jowers of Williston, Peggy Jean Phillips of Neeses, Shirley Johnson of Williston; brothers, Claude David Gunnells of Cope, Clyde Melvin Gunnells of North, Joe Alexander Gunnells of Williston, Laurie Dennis Gunnells of Lakeland, FL; and her grandchildren who were her pride and joy, Skyler Thomas Blume, Caleb Thomas Shealy, and a soon-to-arrive baby boy, Marlin Andrew Blume. Mrs. Shealy was preceded in death by brothers, Randolph Dawson Gunnells, Jr. and Charles Vernon Gunnells.
