William Mallios

COLUMBIA — Services for William Mallios, 85, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 18, 2005 at Bush River Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with interment to follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Josh Martin, Billy Fuller, Matthew Mallios, Skip Mallios, Kevin Weisinger, Steve Wariner. Honorary pallbearers will be the Old Guards of Coldstream. The family will receive friends at the chapel prior to the service from 1-2 p.m. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Mr. Mallios died Saturday, April 16, 2005. Born January 15, 1920 in Columbia, SC, he was the son of the late Louie and Fedwa Khoury Mallios.

He is survived by his wife, Kitty Mallios of Columbia; son, Gary Mallios of Irmo; daughter, Marlene Fuller of Dayton, OH; step children, Caryn Wariner of Franklin, TN, Kevin Weisinger, of Little Rock, AR; brother, James E. Mallios of Columbia; grandchildren, Matthew S. Mallios, Michelle Martin, Lisa Baker, William Fuller; and five great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth H. Mallios.

James A. Wharton Jr.

WEST COLUMBIA — Memorial services for James Albion Wharton, Jr., 60, will be held at 2pm Monday, April 18, 2005, in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, officiated by Rev. Chris Platt. The family will receive friends after the service. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Wharton died Friday, April 15, 2005. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late James Albion Wharton, Sr. and Eva Marie Corley Wharton. Mr. Wharton was a local lifetime resident and retired from Harley Haven.

Surviving are his wife, Judy Dooley Wharton of West Columbia; sons and daughter-in-law, James Albion Wharton, III, and Michael Thomas Wharton, both of West Columbia, Joseph Lee and Sara Wharton of Glenburnie, MD; step-sons and wives, Bobby Brooks and Hali Dooley, Jamie Lee and Britt Dooley all of Lexington; sister and brother-in-law, Jacqueline Ann and Scott Erickson of Lexington; brother, Joseph E. Wharton of Lexington; grandchildren, James Albion Wharton, IV, Michela A. Wharton, Gavin Wharton, Cara Brooks Dooley and Denise Morgan Dooley.

Gussie Taylor

COLUMBIA — Memorial Services for Gussie Mae Taylor, of Columbia, will be held 2:00 p.m. today at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home.

Services are entrusted to Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, 2930 Colonial Drive, Columbia, SC.

Mrs. Taylor died April 14, 2005. Born in Columbus, GA, she was the daughter of Willie C. McCray & Gussie P. Bussey.

She is survived by a son, Edward McCray; daughter, Leslie Council; siblings, Rozetta Rodriguez, Willie Jr., John & Jessie McCray; three granddaughters.

J. Earl Frick

CHAPIN — Services for Jonas Earl Frick, 87, will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, April 18, 2005 at St. Peter Lutheran Church with interment to follow in church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, April 17, 2005 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel. Memorials may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church, 900 Dreher Island Rd., Chapin, SC 29036.

Mr. Frick died Friday, April 15, 2005. Born March 5, 1918 in Little Mountain, SC, he was the son of the late J. Berley and Annie Mae Riddle Frick. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Men, Primetimers, and active in Project Love for twenty-one years at Chapin Elementary School.

He is survived by his loving and faithful wife of sixty-four years, Esther Lindler Frick; sons and daughters-in-law, Earl Jr. and Jennie of Florence, Kenneth and Vivian of Chapin, Phil and Cynthia of Newberry, Kelvin and Jean of Chapin; eleven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; brothers, Darr and Larry Frick of Chapin; sisters, Nezzie Koon of Pelion, and Margaret Hallman of Chapin.

He is preceded in death by his brothers, Willie Mac, Vernon and J.D. Frick.

Marjorie Whitecross

COLUMBIA — A memorial service for the close friends and family of Mrs. Marjorie Whitecross, 82, of Columbia was held 12:30 PM Friday at Shandon Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cooperative Ministry, 1928 Taylor Street, Columbia, SC 29201 of the Temple Isaiah Education Fund, 55 Lincoln Street, Lexington, MA 02421. The family has entrusted Greenlawn Funeral Home for the arrangements.

Mrs. Whitecross passed away Thursday, April 14, 2005 at a Providence Hospital. Born in Boston, MA, she was a daughter of the late John Adamson and Elizabeth Ironside. Returning to College in the 1970’s, she graduated summa cum laude from Boston University with a B.S. in Computer Science. Mrs. Whitecross worked as an administrative assistant for local government in MA. She was a lifelong member of the Daughters of Scotland and a member of the United Church of Christ in Millis, MA. Mrs. Whitecross recently moved to Columbia from Venice, FL where she resided for the past 24 years.

Surviving are her daughter, Sandra J. Whitecross of Burlington, MA; two sons, Kenneth B. Whitecross and his wife, Carolyn of Arlington, CT, and Alan J. Whitecross and his wife, Bonnie, of Columbia, SC; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Whitecross was predeceased by her husband, John K. WhitecrOss who passed away in May of 1994.

Josephine Elizabeth Odell Carter

EVANS, Ga. — Josephine Elizabeth Odell Carter entered into rest Friday, April 15, 2005 at her residence. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, April 19, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Cliffwood Presbyterian Church with Reverend Charles M. Rector officiating.

Mrs. Carter was born January 30, 1910 in Ashtola, Somerset County, Pennsylvania . She was the daughter of John Edward Odell and Fannie Alverta Hoffmeyer Odell. She attended Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee and graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 1931 with a bachelor’s degree in History. She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. During the 1930’s she taught elementary school in Tennessee and studied voice in New York City.

She and Richard Strother Carter, Jr. of Lenoir City, Tennessee were married in Knoxville, December 28, 1941. Their daughters Alice and Mary were born in Tennessee. The family moved to Augusta, Georgia in 1951.

Mrs. Carter was a charter member and past president of the South Augusta Woman’s Club. The club sponsored numerous civic improvement projects, such as the Maxwell Branch of the Augusta-Richmond County Public Library, the Miss Forestry pageant, and the Tallulah Falls School. The club’s Josephine Carter Award was established to annually honor a member who had rendered outstanding service.

Mrs. Carter and her husband were among the founders and charter members of Cliffwood Presbyterian Church in Augusta, where they remain active as long as their health permitted. She was a soprano soloist in the Cliffwood choir for many years. Mrs. Carter and her husband were blessed with 63 years of marriage. They enjoyed traveling together. They were members of the Aiken Assembly and the Augusta Sailing Club.

Mrs. Carter and her husband created a wonderful Christian home for their daughters. She was a loving and beloved wife, sister, mother and grandmother and a friend to many. She was a gracious hostess to all who visited in their home. Mrs. Carter is survived by her husband, Richard Strother Carter, Jr. of Evans, Ga.; two daughters, Alice Carter West of Lilburn, Ga. and Mary Carter Poston of Irmo, S.C. and their husband, David Marc West and Charles “Ben” Poston, III; a granddaughter, Lauren Poston Upchurch of Irmo, S.C. and her husband, Robert John Upchurch; a grandson, Nathan Ashley Carter Poston of Columbia, S.C.; a great-granddaughter, Julia Nichole Upchurch of Irmo, S.C.; a brother, John Edward Odell, Jr. of Boulder City, Nevada; a niece, great-niece and great-nephew and many friends.

Memorial gifts may be made to Cliffwood Presbyterian Church, 2525 Lumpkin Road, Augusta, Ga. 30906. The family will receive friends Monday, April 18, 2005 from 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday, April 19, 2005 from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Melisa Conant

LUGOFF — Funeral services for Melisa Lynn Conant, 36, of Lugoff, will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, April 18, 2005 at Blaney Baptist Church along with her son. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Reverend Charles Everett will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Sunday, April 16, 2005 at Kornegay Funeral Home, Lugoff-Elgin Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Epworth Early Intervention, 2900 Millwood Avenue, Columbia, SC 29250.

Mrs. Conant died Friday, April 15, 2005. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of Clarence Delano Rigsby of Elgin and Donna Branham Bennett of Elgin. From May 5, 1990 to April 15, 2005, she was a member of the Sansbury Eye Center Family where she was dedicated to providing outstanding patient care. In 2002, she received Special Recognition Award and in 2003, she was awarded Employee of the Year. Her presence touched the lives of many and she will be missed by all who knew her. Mrs. Conant was a member of Union Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother and father, are her husband, Edward “Eddie” Walter Conant; brother, Joseph Michael Rigsby; step-sisters, Pam Prewitt and her husband, Russell, Buffy Bowers and her husband, Clarence, Rachel Boland and her husband, Jimmy; step-son, Blake Edward Conant; maternal grandmother, Mattie L. Branham of Camden; paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Rigsby of St. Albans, West Virginia. She was pre-deceased by a son, Nicholas Edward Conant.

Nancy Bracey

BENNETTSVILLE — Services for Nancy Jo Bair Bracey, 70, will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church with burial in McCall Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Whitner-Evans Funeral Home. Born in Marlboro Co. to Dr. J.D. and Nan Brasington Bair, she died April 15, 2005. Surviving are sons, Joseph Sr., Jerry Bracey; daughter, Nancy Raines; grandchildren, Nicole, Joseph, Raymond, Kayla, Michael Bracey.

Sara Henegar

ORANGEBURG — Sara Heath Crider Henegar, 57, of 131 Valley Dr., Orangeburg, SC 2929115, formerly of Bamberg, died Friday 4-15-05 at her residence.

Born Feb. 6, 1958 in Columbia, SC to Earnest Heath and Breda Daniel Heath, she was a nurse in Bamberg and Orangeburg for 33 years. Her personal activities included Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society, and cross-stitching.

Services will be held Monday 4-18-05 at 3:00 pm at Spring Branch Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Donnie Delk and the Rev. Chuck Wells with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Surviving are 3 sons, James and Margaret Crider of Orangeburg, Tracey and Amy Crider of Monteray, California, and Heath and Jennifer Crider of Orangeburg; brother, Wilbert and Joyce Heath of Columbia, SC; 5 grandchildren: Jace, Austin, Will, Anna, Ella Crider; 1 Step son: Jeff Henegar of Columbia, SC.

Visitation will be held Sunday 4-17-05 from 3-5 pm at Cooner Funeral Home in Bamberg SC. The family will receive friends at the home of James Crider 117 Valley Dr. Orangeburg SC. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Nicholas Conant

LUGOFF — Funeral services for Nicholas Conant, 3, of Lugoff will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, April 18, 2005 at Blaney Baptist Church along with his mother. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Reverend Charles Everett will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Sunday, April 17, 2005 at Kornegay Funeral Home, Lugoff-Elgin Chapel. Nicholas died Friday, April 15, 2005. Born in Columbia, he was the son of Edward “Eddie” Walter Conant and the late Melisa Lynn Conant. He was a student at Epworth Learning Center in Columbia. Nicholas loved life with a passion and during his time with us, he touched the hearts of all who knew him. Surviving in addition to his father, and his step-brother, Blake Edward Conant; maternal grandparents, Clarence Delano Rigsby of Elgin and Donna Branham Bennett of Elgin; paternal grandparents, Robert Edward Conant of Lugoff and Deanna Delores Conant of Lugoff. He was pre-deceased by his mother, Melisa Lynn Conant.

Zelda King

WHITMIRE — Zelda Gowan Cummings Teague King, age 89, formerly of 528 Sims St. and the widow of Rev. William (Bill) King died Saturday, April 16th in the Palmetto Health Richland.

She was born in Hot Springs, NC and was the last surviving child of the late Jake and Josie Gowan Cummings.

Mrs. King attended Bonnie Hill School in Hot Springs, NC was a homemaker and attended Pine Ridge Baptist Church.

Surviving are her sons, Tony L. King and his wife Yschi of NaHunta, GA, Jake W. Teague and his wife JoAnne of Laurens; daughter, Camilla Scott of Lexington; five grandchildren, Lisa Burden, Casey Cogsdill, Johnna Revis, Jay Teague, Kelly Thomason; seven great-grandchildren, Josie Burden, Jakeob Teague, Briannah Revis, Brayden Revis, Kristen Revis, Justin Thomason, Chase Teague.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 19th at Pine Ridge Baptist Church with burial in Whitmire Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family will be at the home her son, Jake W. Teague, 498 Vern Cora Rd., Laurens.
